Davies had this to say, “My role as chair is to assist in providing acontext for 13 voices to become 1, and along with the board, togalvanize the arts community in Cornwall, Akwesasne and thecounties. We can converge as one group with various streams, such asvisual arts, music, dance, digital media, in order to repair, strengthenand drive the dynamic, diverse, creative talent that we have in thearea. If we can achieve that goal, then arts can become an economicdriver for the community, and the community can in turn drive thearts. As a partner with SD&G CFDC we are excited about being able toopen doors to the artists in order to provide them with services and orfunding to help them grow their business. I believe that as a small partof the regional talent base, we can work in partnership withbusinesses at large to enhance the tapestry of the region.”

Thank you Carolyn! I would like to take a moment to thank oureditor, Carolyn Hersey, who has been a wonderful part of the LocalSeeker team in 2012. She is stepping down, and I would like to wishher all the best with her future endeavours.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” I love thisChristmas season! I was out shopping this week and Icouldn’t help but notice all of the happy faces. So manypeople humming and singing to the music in thestores. This is so nice to see, it seems like the last coupleof weeks until the 25th really allow everyone to take adeep breath, be thankful and just truly appreciate what

they have. A great time of the year….Merry Christmas toall!!!

This week, I took part in the Sheconnex Studio Wine and Cheese event. I am so thrilled to be a part of this great localorganization, geared for all women. I was happy to bring some great, wholesome, organic appetizers for all to enjoy. Itmakes me feel fantastic to be able to share healthy food with others.

I am privileged and thrilled to attend The Biggest Loser final weigh-in extravaganza atNav Can, Friday, December 14th, hosted by Dr. Marie-Josee Cardinal and Tom Irvine (QuestPTS gym). I can’t wait to see all of the incredible transformations of these amazingparticipants. In my opinion, they are all winners! Having taken the time to change theirlives and learn about health from the inside/out is a great accomplishment. I’m sure that

there are friendships that have been created for a lifetime as well. Congratulations to all of you!Best of luck to the ultimate winner….you are all so deserving!

Just a reminder that my cooking seminars will be starting up again in February 2013. I havegift certificates available for loved ones for Christmas…the gift of health. The seminar consists of healthy recipedemos, taste-testing, information and tips. The participants receive all recipes, information and my own personal dietplan via e-mail after the seminar. It is a delicious afternoon that can easily be enjoyed with family, friends and co-workers.

We will start up our juicing challenges again in February 2013 as well. A great way tolearn the basics of juicing! Again, all recipes, demos and taste-testing are sent via e-mail afterthe seminar. GettingReady forChristmas

It is only 2 weeksuntil Christmas,and so thep r e p a r a t i o n s

have begun. I get in the spirit byoverloading on Christmas movies. Youcould say it is my guilty pleasure. I alsoenjoy listening to Christmas music andI am pleased to see that several stationsare turning into all holiday musicduring this festive time.

I remember last year I wrote about howmuch difficulty I was experiencing atgetting into the spirit; this year isdifferent. First off, I am in a new city, myson will be home for the holidays afterbeing away at college for the first time, and this is when I start new traditions.

The tree is up but not decorated yet. I am waitingfor my son Brad to return. Our tradition is todecorate the tree, while drinking eggnog andwith Christmas movies playing. Wasn’t sure hewanted to, but received a text letting me knowhow much he is looking forward to it. My cat stillthinks the tree is to climb up and I must say, evenwithout decorations it looks beautiful standingin front of my patio door.

This is also the first year I will be away fromCornwall for the holidays. I decided severalweeks ago that with all of my traveling, takinganother jaunt on the 401 during the busiestseason was not a good idea. I’ll miss seeing myfamily but they understand. I will extend aninvitation to my niece who is also in Kingston andwill be working through the holidays since she isa nurse without time off, so hopefully she canjoin us. We will be in town shortly before theholidays to exchange gifts and of course we haveextended phone calls shortly after we awake onChristmas morning.

I will miss attending mass at my Church, St.Francis de Sales. I am not familiar with times andlocations in Kingston, but will try and find outand hopefully be able to attend, but it won’t bethe same as being crowded with my familylistening to the beautiful voices of the Christmaschoir and seeing so many familiar faces.

With the move, I parted with some of mytreasured Christmas decorations, so it when weopen those boxes up, we will see what we stillhave. Of course I could not part with myPommier Angels. They are the pride of my tree. Ialso kept those that were gifts and specialcollectibles that I gathered over the years.

Sometimes, making new traditions are just asimportant as following those from the past. Evenif we can’t be together, in our hearts we alwaysare.

Dear Joe, I had a “contractor”(and I use the term loosely)into my home to install someporcelain tile around thebathtub and on the floor.I did all the prep work:plywood, waterproofing

etc, and did a pretty good job, a jobany tile guy would find acceptable. All this guy had to do was come in andtile. I supplied all the material and would’ve supplied anything else herequired to do a quality job. I left for work on the day he came to tile. Uponmy return I was shocked to see the quality of work this man had done on myhouse. It is an understatement to say that he misrepresented himself, andnow I’m stuck with this bathroom tiling job that I am truly embarrassed toshow my family and friends. My wife is upset, I’m upset, is there any way torepair the damage done to my home and how? Or should I seek some sortof damages from this guy? Tiled Out

Well, Tiled Out,That is quite a fix that you find yourself in. My deepest condolences go outto you because I know the frustration, anger and disappointment that goalong with a job not so well-done. I have been on two ends of this unhappytriad; I’ve been the guy who’s paid for work that I am completely unsatisfiedwith, and also been the contractor who’s been asked into someone’s home torepair the damage done by a careless, heartless contractor.

At a time like this it’s terrible of me to say I told you so, so I won’t. I’ll just takethis opportunity to tell everyone reading this that this is why I preach: never hire acontractor out of the blue. Get referrals. Talk to your dad, your boss, your bowlingbuddies, even your garbage collector. Find out who’s doing the best work around, andwhich contractors are making people happy. A satisfied customer is all the advertisinga good contractor needs, but in order for that advertising to work, the consumer hasto do his or her due diligence when hiring someone to work on their home. That’s howtrust is built. You wouldn’t let a doctor you didn’t trust cut you open, so why would youlet a contractor who hasn’t earned your trust to do the same thing to your secondmost valuable asset? But I digress…

Back to your question. First, there’s not much you can do to fix it. If it’s that bad thatyou can’t live with it, the only remedy for a bad tile job is to rip it out and begin again.Problem with that is in ripping it off, you will also ruin all the careful prep work thatyou did before this all happened. More mess, more money, more time…

As far as seeking reparations from this guy, all I can say to that is good luck. What yousee as a waste of time and money, this guy sees as a hard day’s work and a well-earnedpaycheck. Giving you any money back is essentially taking food out of his kids’ mouthsand clothes off his back; sorry to say, I doubt it’s going to happen. Yes, he screwed up.Yes, he took your money, but he - like you - has bills to pay and mouths to feed. Heprobably shouldn’t be in this line of work, but the best thing you can do is warn him thatyou are not satisfied. Take your complaints to a place that you can use them to protectother consumers: local retailers, the better business bureau, chamber of commerce. Ifyou really need to see some money back, your last recourse will be to take him to smallclaims court. But be warned this is an arena that, if you are not familiar with, will proveto be a frustrating fruitless exercise in law 101. Yes, you’ll learn a lot, but you’ll probablynot get much of your money back, and will end up spending more in the process. Thehours spent preparing, copies, days off work - and all that even if you don’t hire a lawyer. If you hire a lawyer then it’s strictly about principal, but there’s a lot to be said forprincipal. Then again, principals never paid the bills…

If you prepare yourself and handle everything on your own, you could hope to recoupabout 50% of what you’ve lost. The courts are fair and will probably penalize you to someextent for not exercising your due diligence. Going forward, let this be a valuable lessonto us all that a little bit of leg work before starting a project will pay dividends in the longrun. Thanks for your letter, all the best.

The light at the endof the traumaUnfortunately, one single experiencecan traumatize us to the point that wefeel we are damaged goods andscarred forever. We see no way ofgetting past the pain of theexperience and become entangledin our suffering. We are changed.

The upside is that in an instant, all of that can change too. TheUniverse, or God, in their infinite wisdom, can bring a newcircumstance into our lives that completely overhauls ouroutlook and in a totally unexpected way, heals the wounds ofthe past.

The Universe always gives us what we need. Sometimes thedelivery isn’t always pleasant.

Years ago, I experienced a traumatic medical situation followingthe birth of my daughter that left me emotionally scarred anddevastated. Our delivery physician put his own ego ahead of ourwell-being. His decisions resulted in unnecessary pain, humiliation, risk and post-op difficulties. I had no strength tospeak up and my support system was nowhere to be found.

The very people who were supposed to be protecting me andcaring for me failed.

Years later, I found myself fighting to be heard in an emergency room inthe Big Apple.

As I wafted in and out of consciousness, I tried to state my case to the on-call physician and my boyfriend at the time. Neither LISTENED. My bodyhad been out of whack for months. I had been experiencing insomnia, extreme fatigue, night sweats and now - blacking out. I was diagnosedwith alcohol poisoning (after 2 mixed drinks) by the doc, and a “loser” bythe boyfriend (who threatened to leave me in New York and return home)and was sent on my way.

If a head and neck exam or more bloodwork had been ordered, theywould have found my thyroglobulin tumour markers were off the charts. Ihad undiagnosed papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland and lymphnodes. My body had been going haywire because my thyroid was full oftumours.

Again, the people who were supposed to be protecting me and lookingout for me failed. BIG TIME.

Then, I was lucky enough to get treatment. I say lucky because myhospital/doctor cancer experience was incredible. My doctors were kind, caring and gifted. They LISTENED. My nurses were compassionate andgentle. The technicians (who I came to know very well) always put me atease. My cancer therapy program started me on a wonderful, new lifejourney.

My family and my best friend (not boyfriend), became my new infalliblecircle of support. I also learned to speak up for myself and now alwaysbring a family member in case I can’t.

My cancer experience was emotionally healing. The medical communitywas no longer my nightmare. Hospitals, doctors, nurses, and techsbecame one massive, positive moving force in restoring not only myphysical health but my faith in caregivers as healers and protectors.

Now, about that faith in boyfriends….hmmm….that may need somemore work.

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE GETTING A PETBeing organized also means being responsiblein your decision-making process. The Holidays'season is at the door and many of you might bethinking of offering a pet as present. Beforemaking this decision, ask yourself and otherssome questions before giving away a pet or getting one.

1. Why do you want a pet?2. Does everyone in your family want a pet and ready for one?3. Does anyone in the home have allergies?4. Will you read about breeds before choosing a pet?5. Do you know what kind of pet is right for you and the size it will

grow up to?6. Do you want an active or a slower pace pet?7. Is your living space adequate for a pet and are you willing to pet-

proof your home to keep the pet healthy and safe?8. Are you willing to commit to a long-term relationship (up to 20

years) with your pet?9. Are you prepared to deal with a pet's health challenges and afford

all that is required?10. What will you do if you want to go out of town, take a vacation or

get sick?11. Can you adopt a pet from the SPCA instead of buying one?12. What is your behavior and interactions with your family?13. Which adults in the family will be the primary and responsible

caregiver to take the pet out for exercise twice a day and for bathroom breaks at least four to six times a day?

14. Will you be able to supervise any children around this pet?15. If you loose interest in the pet what are your plans?16. Is now the right time to have a pet - are you just starting a family or facing stressful adjustments in the near future?17. How many hours will the pet be left alone during the day and where will it be kept when no one is home?18. Will you be able to spend quality time with your pet and train it?19. Are you willing to get a companion for your pet if the veterinarian makes such a suggestion to resolve behavioral problems?20. Do I have a good veterinarian or obedience trainer lined up, if this is required?

Finding your CreativeTouchstoneThe amazing thing about the Humanmind is the ability for it to findimportance in simple objects. Lookaround your room at home and you

will find little things that you have saved toremind you, when you see them, about a trip you took, aspecial day you had or even a gift that a friend or child gave youthat has more emotional than monetary value. It is our natureit seems to give importance to things that will help us relivememories or events.

Often in therapy a patient is asked to find an object that, whenthey hold it, will calm them down or help to focus theirotherwise chaotic thoughts into some semblance of order. Thismethod can also work with creative people who are frequentlyvictim to their own jumbled thoughts. We creative people arefilled with ideas. Ideas that often overwhelm our thoughts tothe point we become paralyzed and unable to focus onanything. We start writing down something then whileworking on that an idea hits us and we start working on it untilyet another idea comes along. We wander around nevercompleting any one thing before starting to work onsomething else. I have found that a Touchstone will help me torelax and focus my thoughts long enough to completeeverything I started.

Understanding how this works is much easier than finding theTouchstone that will be able to do the trick. It is thereforeimportant to take time to find this thing or things that will helpto calm and focus the hundreds of creative ideas all crammedup trying to be heard.

So what does this Touchstone look like? It can look likewhatever you want. If possible find something that can becarried in your pocket with you so it is available all the time likea small object or photo. It could be as simple as a plastic toy

dancer, a photo of your favorite singer/song writer or a rock you pickedup outside near the place you feel connected to. It could be an objectof faith or something you made yourself to represent who you really are.You can even have more than one, perhaps one for your pocket and onefor the studio that would be too big to carry around.

I have a small amethyst rock that I carry in my pocket, this serves toremind me that I am grateful for being able to do the thing I love andthis focuses me to keep on task. Another much larger Touchstone that Ihave is the Beach here in Myrtle Beach. Standing next to the oceanbrings me back to the time in my life when I knew that no matter what, someday I would make my Art more than a hobby but what I do andwho I am. Now it’s hard to carry that around in your pocket so I keepseveral favorite photos and a few beautiful sea shells I found around myhome to touch when I am feeling insecure about my choices.

Whatever the object is, whatever you decide will work for you, onceyou have it, use it. Hold it in your hand, touch it and reconnect withwho you are and why you do what you do. Now that you are calmerand centered go make some Art!!

Without Exception: Exceptional Art from Beautiful Minds is anongoing arts initiative for special needs students in the CatholicDistrict School Board of Eastern Ontario.

Inspired by three special needs artists in her classroom at NotreDame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, art teacher SarahJaynes founded Without Exception in 2008 in order to highlight andshare the talents of special needs artists within the CDSBEO. Today,in it’s fifth year, the program celebrates the artistic efforts of 37artists from all over Eastern Ontario.

Yearly themes keep them focused. This year they are proud tounveil 37, unique artworks of birds at The Art Gallery (TAG)Cornwall at 168 Pitt Street Cornwall, Ontario on December 15thfrom 2 to 4 pm.

Although similar, all of these artworks speak to the individuality oftheir creators. One hundred percent of the profit fromthe sale of these items will be donated to The Good SamartianTrust Fund which provides financial assistance to students andfamilies within CDSBEO that have exhausted all other avenues ofassistance. The Gift CertificateIt came wrapped in a beautiful ribbon, jeweltones of ruby and amber and emerald threadswoven into the fabric.

The box was beautifully adorned with a tissue paper sodelicate that I hesitated to touch it for fear of tearing the translucentskin. A hint of lavender tugged at my nose as I gently examined thisbeautiful package left for me deep inside my mother’s cedar chest.Someone had taken care and pleasure in wrapping this gift for me.

I pulled at the ribbon, releasing the box from its grip; the ribbons fellgently to the side, cascading around the corners of the box. Eagerly Iscratched at the paper and then, remembering its beauty, slowedmyself down. I unfolded the paper carefully so as not to tear it,preserving every special touch that had been taken as it was wrapped.

As I gently peeled back the paper, the treasure held within wasrevealed. I reached inside and pulled from the wrapping a deep bluevelvet box, you know, the type that jeweler’s use for something veryfine and precious. I held it with reverence, feeling the texture on the

palm of my hand, hesitating for a moment, anticipation rising in my chest. Whatcould this be?

As I pulled back the lid, I closed my eyes, not wanting the moment to end, andthen opening them, I gazed with disappointment at the contents held within. The box was empty except for a single piece of paper. Tears welled up in myeyes.

I placed the box on the table in front of me and lifted the paper from its velvetnest, examining it more carefully. It was not ordinary paper but an ivory colourand textured. Across the top of the paper, embossed in beautiful gold letteringwere the words Gift Certificate. This was followed by a message penned in my mother’s familiar hand.

GIFT CERTIFICATE

My Darling Daughter;

I have wrapped this gift for you with great care for it is the legacy I leave behind and wish to offer you.

I give to you the Gift of Courage – an invitation to lead your life without fear; an invitation to pursueyour dreams and live the life you choose free of the opinions and demands of others. It is an invitationto believe in yourself, never doubting that what you can conceive and believe, you can achieve. Lastly itis an invitation to grab the brass ring of life and never let it go.

Secondly I give you the Gift of Love – of love you will always have from me even though our journeytogether in this lifetime has come to an end; of love for yourself – perhaps the most important gift of all;of love for others which I encourage you to give often and freely; and of love for life and all that you touchduring your time here on earth.

Daughter, I also give you the Gift of Grace – the joy of living full out, free of the burden of guilt, or blameor shame; an invitation to live your life forgiving yourself of all the sins you believe you have committedagainst others while also releasing the sins you believe others have committed against you. See andcelebrate the abundance in your life and express gratitude for all of life’s magnificence.

And finally my darling daughter, I give you the Gift of YOU – of recognizing your own beauty, yourgreat gifts, and, perhaps most importantly, your flame, the spirit that burns deep within you. Show thislight to the world – this is the Gift of Authenticity.

Betty, will you do one thing for me? (And this is my last request of you). Live this gift as I ask and asyou travel through life, give this gift freely to others; for you see my daughter, it is in the living and thegiving that the true meaning of life resides.

Love Mom

roadSIGNS by Betty Healey

I placed the paper, now my mosttreasured possession, back in the velvetbox, gently closed the lid, and handsresting on the top of the case, remembered my mother and thenumerous other gifts she had given tome over a lifetime – patience, encouragement, a listening ear, thewarmth of her arms around me,conversations over dinner, her laughterand sly sense of humor, and so muchmore.

These I knew were the important gifts, more important than all the materialthings, the toys and clothes she had alsoprovided. And I also knew that thesewere the gifts that I wanted to beremembered for, to be my legacy. Whatdo you want yours to be?

SEEKING THE ARTS . SEEKING THE ARTS

FOCUSART ONLINE

What is FOCUS ART about?

In 2004, FOCUS ART was founded by five artists eager to form a circleof support and expertise in Cornwall and SD&G for the visual artists. There was a need that had previously been met by different artcouncils, college programs and devoted art leaders in thecommunity but at this time artists felt isolated and without a voice.

The group elected its first board of directors and voted in the designof its logo. Sue’s Art Gallery on Sydney was its first home. The nextstep was to design a website www.focusartonlin.org. It wasn’t longthat the group grew to over 100 members. Today, eight years later,FOCUS ART has about 80 members; some members are professionalartists, others are beginners or artists who need just that nudge togo public with their work while several members are patrons of thearts.

The "Kings of Vegas: A Tribute to the RatPack"Article and photos by Jacqueline Milner, RTAof Image-ine Photographyhttp://www.image-inephotography.com

The Port is seeing many new andlong time visitors to The PortTheatre these days since they havebegun featuring live entertainmentto the delight of Cornwall and areavisitors. Regional Veteran performersThe Moe Lemieux Band, opened theevening with some cooool jazzaccompanied by the "larger than life"vocals of Candy Provost. I have seenCandy perform on a number of formaloccasions and was pleasantly delightedas Candy "scatted" out a toe tappingmelody with The Band. It wasawesome! One of the wonderfulaspects of this local venue is itsaccessibility to our talented, regionalArtist pool. A range of talent has beenfeatured at The Port over the last fewmonths, catering to a range ofdiscerning tastes from 1 to 101. Lastweeks performance featured the "Kingsof Vegas: A Tribute to the Rat Pack",featuring Christopher Jay (as SammyDavis Jr.), David Iannandrea (as DeanMartin), and Michael Mirand (as FrankSinatra). The three gave a real sense ofthe sounds and camaraderie that existedbetween The Rat Pack. The three steppedoff stage and to the delight of the visitorsdanced, sang to, and danced with theaudience.

In 2010 L'Association Focus Art Association , a bilingual group, became anofficial Corporation with a constitution and terms of reference.

What does FOCUS ART do?

SEEKING SPORTSCover StoryDeprived of Hockey No MoreArticles and Photos by Grant Reso

In the brightly lit depths of the Cornwall CivicComplex, I asked the head of catering, “May Ihave one of these bread rolls?” I hadn’t had achance to eat before arriving, and making a trip

to the concession stand didn’t appeal to me all that much. “Helpyourself,” he replied, as he looked at my press pass. I was there tocover the Cornwall River

Kings’s hockey game. Thiswasn’t your average gamecoverage with goals, points, major penalties—why thosethings were mere fluff forthis story. No sir, I was hereto see what the rave was allabout.

From the arena speakers, Ihear: “Twenty-two hundredin attendance,.” The voicebehind the microphone wasretired sergeant ThomRacine. Good man. I thoughtof just asking him to writethis story, but that wouldn’tbe professional. However, his insight on the sport issecond to none. It’s nowonder he’s in demand allover the area to either callthe game for television, radio, or some other media.

Oh right, the game. That’s why I’m here.

I had never been to a River Kings game. I’ve mostly attendedCornwall Colts games. Not because I’m a fan—although I supportjust about everything local in our fair city—no, I’m usually there asa member of the crew for televised productions. I had heard a lotabout the River Kings. There’s constant buzz about the action andnear sold out games. Why so much buzz, I wondered. By the timeI took my position, fans were pouring into the arena. Some die-hardfans had already been there thirty minutes prior to the warm up.When I say fans were pouring in, there’s no exaggeration. Howcould this team garner this much craze and this many fans?

It’s well into the third period and the action has been nonstop.During intermission Rodney Rivette expressed his opinion as towhy people enjoy watching the River Kings. “It’s the action,” hesaid. He was right. No, indeed it’s not the NHL lockout that’s

orchestrating the reaction. It’s the solid hockey action thathas been missed by this city since The Cornwall Acesfolded in 1995. It’s not that the Cornwall Colts are a badteam—they’re in a different league. As their namesuggests, the Colts are young, they’re just kids stilllearning to be professional and learning how to take IanMacInnis’ coaching efforts at value. Most of the River Kingsplayers are in their mid to late-twenties with a differentskills and experiences. (another sentence here? Some ofthese boys have played for the minors, the majors, or justgrew up hacking the puck across the asphalt in Pitt Streetparking lots.

Back to the story: Here we are late in the third period. Thecrowd I’m sitting with is cheering loudly! They were like apack of caged yet well-trained animals let loose for theevening. Banging on the glass with beverages in hand, theyare enjoying every moment of this game as much as I am.When this period started, it was tied at five. The gameended with The River Kings winning Eight to Five. The firsttwo periods were tight with back and forth scoring, firstthe Kings, their opponents, then the Kings would answer. This tense style is what the fans came for. They also camefor how the Kings know how to finish…

At fifteen dollars a ticket, you really can’t go wrong takingin a game. The Cornwall River Kings truly deliver what weall enjoy most about hockey: Passion and Excitement.

Way to stay classy Lacasse

One of my favourite moments of this young hockeyseason happened last Saturday night at the CivicComplex.

Backup goaltender Fred Piche had justbackstopped the Cornwall River Kings to a thrilling8-6 come-from-behind win over Riviere-du-Loup.All Star goaltender Loic Lacasse, who was pulledearly in the second period, handed his backup the

game puck at the exact time the 21-year-old was being named the game’sthird star by public address announcer Thom Racine.

It was a great moment and well deserved for Piche, who stopped 28-of-30shots en route to his first LNAH victory.

The night didn’t go quite as planned for Lacasse, who was playing against hisolder brother Chad. To make matters worse, it was his brother who scoredthe fourth goal, which was the last shot he’d face on this night.

Yet, there Lacasse was on the ice after the final buzzer sounded, all smilesand sincerely happy to see the kid get the win. Sure says a lot about whatkind of team the River Kings are.

ON TAP: The River Kings (9-4-0-1) pay Sorel-Tracy (7-6-3-0) a visit Fridaynight. The team has a coach bus making the trip. Then, Jonquiere (11-4-0-0)pays a visit to the Civic Complex in a matchup of the top two teams in theLNAH standings. In their last matchup, Cornwall beat Jonquiere 5-4 on Nov.24 at the Complex.

CORBEIL: Cornwall’s Nicolas Corbeil was unavailable for last Saturday’s gamevs. Riviere-du-Loup, and it cost him the team scoring lead. Corbeil had a two-pointlead over Sasha Pokulok, who went out and had a four-point night.

COLLYMORE: With Corbeil out, the River Kings were also playing without the servicesof Alex Bourret, who has moved on (for now) to the KHL. Shawn Collymore, all of asudden, had lost both his linemates, but he turned in his best performance of theseason, scoring two almost identical goals that were highlight-reel material. He beatRiviere-du-Loup goaltender Pierre-Olivier Lemieux high glove side with laser wristshots to the top shelf. Collymore also added three assists for a five-point night.

SEEKING SPORTSDRIVE THE NET: The River Kings’ line of captain Steve Simoes, Kurt McSweyn andSteve McJannett continues to drive hard to the net. And despite a goaltenderinterference call on the captain early in the third period, they continued to dowhat they do best all night long. McSweyn did just that and was rewarded witha garbage goal, so to speak, which turned out to be the game winner.

HOWE: In his first few games as a River King, enforcer Tyler Howe showed hecould land a solid punch. Last Saturday, he proved he could take one, too. Howehad a lengthy second-period battle with Alexandre Vachon, a veteran enforcer inthe LNAH who is a handful at 6’4” 230 lbs. Vachon landed some good shots earlyon but Howe stayed on his feet and hung in tough. That seemed to help sparkthe River Kings, who trailed 4-2 at the time.

ATTENDANCE: Cornwall has surpassed the 20,000 mark in attendance throughonly seven home dates. The River Kings are averaging 2,955 fans per game. And,they’ve rewarded local hockey enthusiasts with an impressive 5-1-0-1 record atthe Ed Lumley Arena. Last Saturday, the Kings drew 2,556 spectators; a very solidnumber considering it’s Christmas-party season. Cornwall’s next home game(after this weekend) is Sunday, Dec. 23 when Saint-Georges comes to town for amatinee.

WORLD JRS: It’s the most wonderful time of the year… the World Junior HockeyChampionships. It’s always been a great holiday tradition for me, gatheringaround the tube with family and watching the Under-20 tourney. It’ll be thatmuch more special for Canadian fans this year, since we’ve been without the NHLall season. It’s too bad the tournament is being held in Russia; most of Canada’sgames will be at 4:30 a.m. I might just need that wakeup call from TSN’s Jay Onraitand Dan O’Toole. You could always catch the game on repeat later in the day, butwith social media, it’ll be hard not to hear the score somehow.

SPENGLER CUP: I’ve never found enough time to fit the Spengler Cup into myschedule during the holidays, but this year, there will be some star power onTeam Canada and it might be worth watching. With NHL games cancelledthrough the end of December, it’s very likely that John Tavares, Tyler Seguin,Jason Spezza and Patrice Bergeron could all be wearing the Maple Leaf at thetournament. Canada hasn’t won the event since 2007. The final is set for Dec. 31.

A weekly look at racing fromboth sides of the 1000 IslandsAlthough the 2012 racing season is now just amemory, there is still plenty of off-season news andinformation trickling in from area race tracks. We willdiscuss that throughout this column, as well as thesudden surge in the Sportsman division that willhave car counts on the rise when the green flagwaves to start the 2013 racing season.

Let’s start off with Cornwall Motor Speedway, who just announced this pastweek that the World of Outlaw Late Models and World of Outlaw Sprint Carswill both be back on the schedule in 2013. The Late Models will return toCornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, June rd, and the World of OutlawSprint Cars will hit the track on Sunday, July 28th. The Canadian NationalsSeries will return for another season at Cornwall with dates on May 19th,August 4th and September 1st while the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcarSeries will take centre stage on Sunday, June 30th. Other dates will beannounced after the new year.

The World of Outlaw Late Models will also visit the Rinaldi Family-owned Brighton Speedway on Thursday, June 20th for their inauguralappearance. This will be an event unlike any other at BrightonSpeedway and will certainly be on my schedule in 2013.

Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park is in the news lately as well, announcing their plan to return to Friday night racing next season. What divisions will be racing weekly has yet to be determined. The trackwill open on Sunday, January 6th for the 2013 Hangover Endurofeaturing a pair of 40 lap events paying $500 to win each.

Brockville Speedway has announced their date for the annual 1000 Islands RVDIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals for 2013. It will take place on October 18th –20th. They are currently working on their full schedule for the upcoming season, and may have some interesting changes in store for the New Year.

Border Patrol with Craig Revelle

Throughout the years I have been a big proponent of the Sportsman division. The GM Crate Engine program may have some issues abroad, but since theyhave made that motor mandatory, the car counts have been on the rise. In 2013,the class will continue to have strong support with several new drivers cominginto the division. Joey Ladouceur will move up from the Pro Stock division toSportsman, and Bill “Moon” Mulling will come out of racing retirement tocompete with the newly formed Merpaw-Mullin Motorsports team. There are acouple graduates from the Brockville Karting that will move to Sportsman aswell, plus several other racers from the area who will all be competing in thispopular class.

This will be my last column for the 2012 season. I hope you have all enjoyedreading it, and I look forward to writing again in the New Year. Have a safe andHappy Holiday season, and I will see you in 2013.
