As many of you know, Michael Jones, co-founder and Executive Director of Local Matters, transitioned to the role of Board Chair in January 2014. The Board of Directors hired Michelle Moskowitz Brown to lead the organization into its next ideation as Executive Director. Michelle had overseen programs and finance prior to this new role. This change was an intentional outgrowth of our 2013-2015 strategic plan and high-lights the strength of our organization and our ability to remain nimble as we move forward.

Michael’s social entrepreneurial vision meshed perfectly with Michelle’s extensive not-for profit expertise when they met back in 2011. Neither knew any other way to run a not-for-profit than as a “business” with a focus on innovation, a diversity of funding and revenue streams and a culture built on clarity of mission and strong values.

Local Matters understands the importance of change, both from the perspective of best practices rela-tive to running the organization, and to societal change – identifying the levers we need to pull to trans-form our food system.

Through our strategic planning process in 2013, we strengthened our efforts to support access to health-ful food and expanded our educational programming to teach even more children and adults about what healthful food is, how to grow it, how to cook it and how to buy it on a budget. We also evolved to an organization that is focused on healthy communities through the creation of neighborhood food plans. We celebrate healthful food education as our sweet spot and our future growth will reflect this.

With our 2013 activities as a baseline, in 2014, we anticipate that our educational programs will grow by 15% with an additional growth of 10% in 2015. This will allow us to reach over 10,000 individuals with life-changing programs on a budget of just under one million dollars. Local Matters is up to the task and with your support we will affect great change together. Thank you for being part of the good food movement!

This deliberate, multi-faceted approach to planning and growth will ensure that Local Matters enters its next phase successfully.

Local Matters is a small organization that performs well outside its weight class. With robust grassroots support, their work is making a tremendous impact on the health of children and adults in our community.”

Grow our programs: Reach 10,000 individuals annually by 2015First and foremost, we will grow the number of participants across our life-changing core programs (Food Matters, Cooking Matters and Growing Matters) by a minimum of 25% before the end of 2015.

Launch “Wellness Matters” in Spring 2014Our newest program, Wellness Matters, brings delicious and healthful food eduction into the workplace. 100% of the proceeds from all Wellness Matters programming supports our three core programs in communities of need.

Leverage our expertise to change thefood system Local Matters has become a thought-leader for organizations that are pursuing work to increase access to healthy food and to improve the health outcomes of low-income residents across our region. We are developing and implementing a deliberate strategy to work with a variety of stakeholders and find neighborhood-based solutions to food-insecurity issues.

Raise more funds: Execute a deliberate, sustainable development planA strategic plan requires a responsible plan for growth in fundraising to ensure we maintain a diverse stream of resources and increase overall investments. We are integrating best practices and strategies to raise and steward funds.

Support our leadership: Growth and development for our Board and staffWe are identifying dynamic new individuals to join our board, and giving our leaders and board members the support they need to thrive with training and professional-development activities.

After a successful First Five years in operation, in 2013 we completed a three-year strategic plan to grow our impact to reach more children and adults in Central Ohio and beyond.

As the Ohio lead partner for Share our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ program, Local Matters is working to create lasting solutions to hunger in our communities. Our six-week, hands-on series gives participants the tools, experience, and confidence they need to make healthy, affordable meals for themselves and their families.

In 2013, we introduced Cooking Matters at the Store™ tours. Using local grocery stores as a classroom, these tours help participants identify the best choices for their health and their budgets. After a successful launch and a national record-breaking day-long Cooking Matters at the Store Tour with 289 graduates, we are expanding the program in 2014 to reach 1,350 people throughout Central Ohio.

Food MattersFood Matters: Empowering lifelong healthy food choices by teaching children where fresh food comes from, how to grow it, and how to prepare it.

Our in-depth, multi-cultural, and multi-sensory approach promotes acceptance of diverse, nutritious foods among young children as well as their parents and teachers. This broader appreciation for fresh, healthy foods is key to the establishment of lifelong healthy eating habits.

1,100 students participated in Food Matters Around the World – our 24-week Food Matters curriculum offered during the school year

1,400 students participated in Food Matters in Your Garden – our Food Matters summer program

With the generous support of the United Way of Central Ohio and the Cardinal Health Foundation, Local Matters launched a new evaluation of our Food Matters program. After participation in Food Matters:

77% of students are meeting the daily–recommended value for fruits

61% of students are meeting the daily-recommended value for vegetables

We are refining our programmatic offerings to expand the reach of Food Matters:

In 2013 we launched Food Matters at Your School, our 10, 14 or 24-week curriculum that we offer through a train-the-trainer model. Working with host sites, we train classroom teachers to facilitate Food Matters lessons to their students. Sites can start by having our teachers run the program and phase in their team to teach over time.

We officially launched Food Matters in your Garden, a 10-week summer program, which, when combined with Growing Matters, allows us to use our learning gardens as an outdoor learning classrooms.

Gift GardenWith generous support from Puffin West Foundation, Local Matters collaborated with Eliza Ho and Tim Lai at ALTernative, to install and maintain at garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus’s Gift Street location. The design highlights the connection between artistic expression and gardening, and features tall, wheelchair accessible raised beds.

Learning GardensLearning Gardens: Our learning gardens function as outdoor learning environments for students, as well as a demonstration garden for adults in the community who wish to begin growing their own food. In our Food Matters lessons, we teach students about the relationship between healthy food, healthy bodies, and a healthy environment. In the learning gardens, they can see that firsthand.

We also work with host sites to help volunteers and staff become community leaders, through our annual ACGA Growing Communities Workshop and on-going training.

Growing Matters

Hoop House ProjectGrowing Matters operated the Knowlton Hoop Houses, an urban growing project in the Weinland Park neighborhood. The Hoop Houses were built in collaboration between the Knowlton School of architecture at OSU, the Godman Guild, and Local Matters. In addition to serving as a site for hands-on education, the Knowlton Hoop Houses actively sell produce to local markets such as The Greener Grocer, the Crest Gastropub, and the Near East Side Cooperative market.

Give Food Some Thought

As a part of our strategic plan, in 2014, Local Matters will launch Wellness Matters with the support of a grant from The Columbus Foundation’s Fund For Financial Innovation. This new workplace-based food education program brings fun, hands-on, healthy, and delicious food activities to the workplace. We are building on our reputation as a trusted leader in education, and meeting the needs of employers and employees who are seeking powerful wellness programming.

Wellness Matters’ true innovation is that it is the only wellness program whose proceeds are invested in educational programming in communities of need. In addition to reaching thousands of individuals each year at their workplaces with team-building, food-related activities, Wellness Matters will provide our organization with the stable financial foundation that is necessary for growth.

Our offerings include:Cooking Demonstrations | Lunch and Learns | Hands-on Cooking Classes | Team Activities

Community EngagementAt Local Matters we believe community outreach is a key to addressing healthy food access and education and that this process must be localized, inclusive, and neighborhood-driven. Much of our work links individuals to existing resources and highlights the connection between the health of our food system and our physical, economic, and environmental health. Our engagement work takes three forms: grassroots efforts, food mapping and planning, and community partnerships.

Community Partnerships Noreen Warnock, Co-Founder of Local Matters and Director of Community Outreach, sits on multiple committees and advocates for food-system change at the local, regional and national level. The primary aim of this work is to monitor policy to bring the information to community members.

Food Mapping and PlanningThis neighborhood-by-neighborhood process, guided by community members’ input, seeks to identify existing resources relative to food education, food access and food production, then develop goals and a plan of action for a neighborhood food plan. In late 2013 early 2014, Local Matters piloted a multi-phased model for the development of neighborhood food plans in Franklinton and the Hilltop.

Grassroots Engagement Our network of individual relationships and grassroots engagement helps create stronger communities where individuals are assisted in aquiring the resources to become leaders in shaping their neighborhood.

Responsive to needAt Local Matters we have tended to focus on delivering our programs in specific neighborhoods, such as the Near East Side and Weinland Park. However, our work expands well beyond any particular location. Did you know that Local Matters works with many diverse populations? We are currently serving children and adults with developmental disabilities, women in recovery, diabetics, homeless people, deaf people, and we are about to add a prison re-entry program.

Just as our early childhood education program provides a curriculum through the lens of food, our responsive and adaptable programs provide the opportunity to learn together and to heal through food. We work closely with our partners to ensure that our programs meet the needs of the diverse communities in which we work. We are grateful to all of our partners.

Our volunteers are integral to the success of all of Local Matters’ work. Whether it is serving as a culinary or nutrition instructor in a Cooking Matters class, teaching children through Food Matters, staffing special events, or installing gardens, we could not do this work without a group of committed, active volunteers.

In 2013, 289 Local Matters volunteers donated 4,300 hours.

To meet our goal of expanding our core programs by 25% by 2015, Local Matters is expanding our volunteer pool, particularly volunteers with specialized skills such as early-childhood education, the culinary arts, and nutrition. In addition to targeted recruitment, Local Matters is developing an innovative train-the-trainer program to help expand our pool of expert volunteers.

Local Matters Ambassadors and OSU Student Ambassadors

Local Matters is fortunate to have the support of two self-governed groups that advocate on behalf of Local Matters’ mission.

Local Matters Ambassadors are a grassroots, Local Matters-affiliated group serving as ambassadors of Local Matters and its mission in the community. This group increases the outreach capacity of the organization by holding social and educational events and organizing fundraisers. The group engages volunteers with various skills, talents, and leadership abilities at a meaningful level, growing our movement and nurturing new leaders.

The Local Matters Student Ambassadors at The Ohio State University foster leadership skills among students who are driven to be change agents in the good food movement. The group gives students a platform from which to pursue community and individual projects by building off of Local Matters’ core program areas: healthy food education, community and backyard gardening, systemic change, engagement, and political action.
