infrastructure and developing the local economy of an area and region. Special events can also help attract new audiences that help build, change and expand the local culture. This has inspired our overall program and, in particular, the three streams of the Conference. I hope you walk away from this Conference with fresh inspiration which you can apply to new and existing tourism initiatives.

The Conference would not be possible without the unwavering support of our Official Partner, Destination NSW, and all our other supporters and exhibitors, with special thanks going to the Conference co-host, Bathurst Regional Council.

Welcome to the 11th annual LGNSW Tourism Conference being held in Bathurst in its Bicentenary year. We have developed this Conference in consultation with key industry partners and Local Government to help our member councils expand their tourism services and grow their economies. Thus the theme this year is aptly titled: Building Community Capital: social, economic and cultural.

Tourism today is no longer measured merely by visitor numbers and bed nights; it can also generate a legacy for the host community, help in building

CR KEITH RHOADES AFSM PRESIDENT, LGNSW

In 2015, we aim to get through a program of over 150 special events that celebrate our built, natural and cultural heritage under the Bathurst200 campaign. The goal is to open up the minds of travellers and visitors to see the broad range of amazing experiences to be found here whether you stay for a weekend, a week or even longer. Log on to our bathurst200.com.au website and lock in a return visit here for our major festivals in May, July and October or one of the many events in between.

We hope delegates enjoy a wonderful experience here and look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon.

visitors to our great state can enjoy outstanding experiences that offer reasons to visit all year round.

As the home to one of our most iconic regional events, Mount Panorama is the perfect location, given the role major events play in growing the visitor economy. The Local Government NSW Tourism Conference will offer insights into how we can combine to leverage the tourism opportunities that events present to increase visitor expenditure and maintain NSW’s position as Australia’s most visited state.

I hope you enjoy your visit to majestic Mount Panorama and get the most out of this year’s Conference program.

On behalf of Bathurst Regional Council and the Bathurst community it is my pleasure to welcome delegates to the 2015 Local Government NSW Tourism Conference here in the beautiful Bathurst Region.

2015 is a very special year for our city as we celebrate our place in the nation’s history and 200 years since we were proclaimed as Australia’s first inland European settlement. Construction of a monument in the Bicentennial Macquarie River Peace Park is well underway and due for completion in time for the 200th anniversary celebrations on 7 May.

Welcome to Mount Panorama and Bathurst for the 2015 Local Government NSW Tourism Conference. Destination NSW continues its work in delivering the Visitor Economy Industry Action Plan to develop tourism to NSW and creating, securing and promoting Australia’s most compelling calendar of major events for Sydney and regional NSW.

Our role in acquiring new events and growing existing, major events for our regions is key in building community capital. A strong regional events calendar enhances the social, economic and cultural fabric of our regions and is instrumental in ensuring that
