WHAT POSITIONS ARE UP FOR ELECTIONWe hope you’ll vote in all elections on your voting document – the successful candidates make decisions that affect us all every day so make sure you have your say.You may find all or some of these positions on your voting document: 1) The Mayor is the leader of the City or District Council.2) The City or District Council provides communities with a wide range

of local services and facilities. Councils make decisions to improvecommunity wellbeing including key infrastructure (e.g. watersupply, sewerage, roads), local regulations, recreational facilities,parks, planning and building issues.

3) The Regional Council makes decisions about functions bestdelivered at a regional scale such as natural resource management(e.g. quality of water, allocation of water, land and soil, coastalplanning, plant and pest control), regional transport, and civildefence and emergency management. Unitary Authorities performthe functions of both City or District Councils and RegionalCouncils.

4) The District Health Board makes decisions every day to improve thehealth of people in the community – including the kinds of healthservices to be provided.

5) A Community Board provides leadership to empower localcommunities and may make decisions about local issues orrecommend how Council should spend money on local services.

6) A Licensing Trust exists to sell alcohol responsibly through premisesin the trust area and decide how surplus profits are returned to the community. Community and other Trusts support charitable work.

7) A Poll or Referendum may also be on your voting document. Yourvote in this helps the Council make decisions on the issue beingconsidered.

As a Timaru resident I believe it is important forthe council to have a fair representation of thedistrict as a whole. As a hardworking, young manI believe that I am better able to represent other

young people of the district to have a more inclusive councildirection. At the moment there does not seem to be muchinterest, as a whole, in local politics. This means that the councilmay end up going in a direction that does not reflect the districtas a whole, my aim is to make sure that this does not happen bybringing in as much interest as possible, from the community, inthe decisions the council makes. By having a younger voice leadthe way we can strive for a future Timaru District whereeveryone feels that their voice is heard no matter whatdemographic or background they come from.

Timaru district needs to be a vibrant, attractiveplace to live.The council however needs to balance that byliving within its means and spending carefully.

I am born and bred in Timaru, and have been involved withmany organisations and am passionate about the district.I am however concerned for our ageing ratepayers.The projected rate rises approved by the TDC in their long termplan equates to a 50 per cent increase by 2028. The councilneeds to work hard to reduce that increase. Priorities include attracting new businesses and residents tosupport the local economy, as well retain what we already have.The TDC also needs to be more transparent about its plans anddecision-making processes and also have open communicationwith ratepayers.I won't be afraid to ask the hard questions and make the toughdecisions.

My principal place of residence is in the PleasantPoint Community Board area.

Having been deeply involved in the community inthe past, I would like to bring my knowledge andcommon sense experience to the Board.My community involvement included nearly 27

years with the Pleasant Point Volunteer Fire Brigade and 7 yearsas a foundation member of the St Johns First Response unit.Many weekends were also spent with helping extend therailway line down to Keanes Road and the development of thecomplex there. At present I am part of the CD team.There are some issues which the community will face shortly. Iam passionate about New Zealand's best water supply. Ifelected I would do my best to see that we can keep chlorine outof our drinking water. A wider issue is drowning in waste. Ourhousehold puts at least 60 plastic milk bottles in the yellow binevery year. We only need about 4 glass bottles!

Now, over-reliance on large-scale dairying has resulted in nitrate-contaminated water, presenting a health risk to Cantabrians,yet local government response has been slow. This disconnectbetween science and local governance has serious consequencesfor our people and environment.In South Canterbury, climate change means loss of snow andglaciers, with sea level rise impacting our coastal towns.However, warmer temperatures will increase the growingseason, providing opportunities for new crops.Climate change is both a risk and an opportunity. I am standingto advocate for people and environment before profit, and fordevelopment of a resilient and sustainable infrastructure andeconomy in Canterbury.

My principal place of residence is in the SouthCanterbury District Health Board area.

I am a Physiotherapist and have worked in thehealth sector for 35 years.I am currently Deputy Chair of the Board, Chair ofHospital Advisory Committee and Chair of the

Building advisory group.I believe this health board needs to serve this community andprovide a high standard of health care across all sectors and agegroups.There are many challenges in South Canterbury health, with anaging population, tired and aging facilities and an agingworkforce. Managing all these on a tightening budget is ourchallenge.Building and redevelopment have already started within thehospital and I would like to see this continue to develop tobring our facilities up to a modern well worked hospital thatfully caters for our communityI will strive to make the SCDHB work within its budgets andcontinue to provide better, faster health care for those in needin our community.

Conflict of Interest StatementI have the following conflicts of interest with the SCDHB.I work as a Physiotherapist in Private Practice in Timaru.My Daughter is employed by SCDHB as an OccupationalTherapist and NASC Assessor.To the best of my knowledge I have no other conflicts ofinterest nor do I foresee any conflicts arising in the future.

My professional medical experience as a doctorincluded fifteen years as an Orthopaedic Surgeonat Timaru Hospital. I have served five terms onyour DHB. I have a clear understanding of the

resources and personnel necessary for safe, effective HealthServices. As your elected representative, I would continue tocontribute my medical experience towards improving ourServices, Urban and Rural. The main focus must be on people. Our patients at the centre ofour plans. Our skilled workforce enabled by well-informedBoard decisions. I passionately believe that Timaru must keep afull range of high-quality Hospital, Emergency, Aged Care,Mental Health and Community Services here, at the centre of

the South Island.I shall continue to strongly challenge any plans that threatenour Services locally or regionally.As a doctor, I am determined that we work to sustain andcontinually improve our Health Services for the wellbeing of usall.

Michael BOORER

My principal place of residence is in the SouthCanterbury District Health Board area. I am alsostanding for Timaru Ward.

For the past two terms I've been a ministerialappointee on the SCDHB and deputy chair of itsaudit and assurance committee.

As an elected member I will continue to ensure Timaru retainsits hospital and management have the right resources to deliverquality health services to the community.As an experienced chartered accountant with a M.Com(Hons) ineconomics, the skills I'll continue to bring to the SCDHB are inthe strategic planning, accounting and finance fields.Having been the National Finance and Administration Directorfor the Order of St John, I'm acutely aware of the region'spressures from an ageing population and the challenges thesepressures pose.I'm 59, married, reside in Timaru and recently retired as GroupManager Corporate Services at Alpine Energy.My community involvement and board experience has beenthrough current and past membership of education boards,service clubs and charitable trusts.

My principal place of residence is not in the SouthCanterbury District Health Board area.

As your representative on the Board I will ensurehealth services are designed with ourcommunities' needs at the forefront. I will listento clinicians who are closest to patients, who

know the improvements that are needed. My focus will include;bolstering rural healthcare, ensuring the workforce is wellsupported and activating preventative health initiatives.I am well placed to bring the perspective and inquisitive mindneeded for bold decision making; having worked throughoutSouth Canterbury with health teams as 'Primary HealthManager' at SCDHB from 2015-2018 and with businesses whileworking for the economic development agency from 2010-2015.I have had Board experience on region's YMCA and CommunityTrust boards.I recently moved from Timaru to Christchurch to gain experiencein civic governance at the Christchurch City Council where Imanage its Community Funding - I spend plenty of time back inSouth Canterbury, which is home.

Seeking re-election for a third term.I have lived in the South Canterbury region for 46years. Married to Chris we have 4 children andseven grandchildren.

From a community nursing background most of my working lifehas been spent in the public health sector. I gained a valuableinsight into governance and clinical governance through myappointments on national boards and ministerial appointedadvisory committees. I am employed as a tutor at Ara Instituteof Canterbury.I have a strong commitment to community development andenjoy my involvement in a number of organisations and clubs.Serving the SCDHB for 6 years has been both rewarding andchallenging in ensuring equitable access to health services whilemaintaining financial viability.I have a strong desire to continue as a Board member to leadinto a future that will enhance the health and independence ofthe people of South Canterbury.

great healthcare that's close to home.But with limited funding, DHBs need to make the most of everydollar to meet the needs of our people.I'll help our DHB do that by supporting them to keep theworkforce engaged, the buildings and services in greatcondition and using technology to measure our progress andadapt to the changing needs of our population. and Business, but still a Director on several Family Companies.I have been a volunteer and on the Board of the Timaru SeniorCitizens for the past 7 years and with a team, organise and cookfor The Friday Club. As Chairman of the MRI fundraising group I headed the teamthat raised the funds for an MRI Scanner at Timaru Hospital. Icontinue as Chairman of the MRI Charitable Trust which holdsthe MRI scanner in Trust for the people of South Canterbury. Myinvolvement in Lions Clubs has seen me serve to the level ofInternational Director on the International Board.
