Event Name & Description Ninth Annual Academic Meeting – Fairness and Equity in Medical Education This is a one day event hosted by the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) which promotes high quality education for the benefit of patients and the public. Overview of the event: To achieve high quality teaching and learning we must ensure fairness for all. In an increasingly highly pressured and competitive NHS and higher education environment how do we ensure that our educational practice is entirely fair and equitable? What are the barriers to a fair approach and how can we be sure that unconscious factors are not affecting our decisions regarding students and trainees, colleagues, staff and patients. Keynote speaker Professor Srikant Sarangi, Director of the Danish Institute of Humanities and Medicine (DIHM) at Aalborg University

Careers Information Resources for Faculty and Trainees You may recall being invited to complete a survey last autumn, either online or at a Trainer Development Day. The Deanery set out to understand who students and trainees approach locally for careers help, what they need most help with, whether the careers resources available are useful to you and what you would like to learn more about to help you in this activity. From almost 200 responses we gained a lot of information and the report summary is on the Deanery’s Careers Unit web page for Trainers. This has enabled the Careers Unit to develop several new resources to help local faculty recognise quickly:

the type of careers issue which is being presented by a trainee

what information resources are most suitable for the need in question

where to find these resources promptly and in one place Click here to view a 3 minute video which will explain the three types of “Career Client” which emerged from the findings and the most relevant information source for each. In addition to the many resources already hosted on our Trainers page, there is now an interactive infographic which you and trainees can link to from the Home Page. This classifies all the main sources of help and information by the types of need, providing clickable links to each. The Deanery’s Careers Guidance page now hosts an interactive Career Support Navigation Guide, showing all the people in both Deanery and Local Faculty who can provide some aspect of help or information with medical careers questions, so that it’s easier to signpost to someone with the right expertise. We hope you find all this helpful in the crucial work you do on the ground in fielding careers questions at the front line. The Careers Unit will be hosting a full day UK-wide Medical Careers CPD event on 1st March 2018 (see page 9 for details). If you require any further information, please email Sally Blake, Career Development Manager, Wales Deanery ([email protected]).
