In 18 years as the head coach White has had the opportunity to lead two teams to the state championship game and facing seemingly insurmountable odds was able to lead his team to victory. He acknowledged that there were a lot of simi- larities regarding the two games with Bearden and Hampton both entering the games as heavy favor- ites. Fortunately for White and the fans of Mount Ida football neither the 2007 or the 2016 Mount Ida Lions listened to predictions. They entered the game with a desire to win and emerged on top. When asked about this year’s state champion- ship game he remarked. “The best team won. We may not have been the best athletes, but we were the best team.” The best team he spoke of started the season with a lot of questions. The graduation of what many thought was the best class of athletes since 2007 had left several holes in key skill positions. Cade Helms was the lone starter in the back field to return with sophomores filling the vacant positions. The strength of the team from the beginning was the front four. White admitted that he had said from the beginning that this year’s success hinged on the play of the offensive and defensive line. Junior Gunter Gilbert, who had started as a sophomore had to move to center to provide a steady hand on the ball, but the remainder of the line was full of experi- ence at their respective positions. Mayor Jo Childress informed council members that the area re- gional water provider had decided to raise rates beginning January 1, 2017. The mayor, who is also a board member for the regional water provider, stated that rising costs of water production war- ranted the increase in water rates. She explained that regional wa- ter increased the price of water by 25 cents per 1,000 gallons on the minimum usage amount imposed on each city serviced. Mount Ida’s minimum usage is seven million gallons per month while Oden’s is 750,000 gallons per month. The increase means Mount Ida’s water bill will increase$1,750 per month. Childress suggested the city pass a three percent increase on city services to include wa- ter, sewer, and garbage pick up. She stated this would increase a person who uses 1,000 gallons of water a month’s bill by just less than a dollar per month. Alderman Melvin Simpson stated that the increase imposed by regional water was approxi- mately 6.67 percent and he felt the city should increase their rates a similar amount to avoid any loss of revenue. A short time ago while burning a brush pile my fire got into the woods on my property. I thought I had taken the necessary precautions to extinguish it but much to my surprise it reignited. As a result I called the fire department who responded very quickly and efficiently. Before it was over, which did not take long, there were represen-tatives from the South Fork Center, Joplin and Norman fire departments and the Arkansas Forestry Com-mission. I wish to express my appreciation to all the guys and gals who took care of business promptly and professionally. Too often we take these volunteers along with first responders and law enforcement for granted who sacrifice their time and safety to take care of the rest of us. How blessed are we who live in Montgomery County with so many dedi-cated people. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Sincerely,Jon Standridge

“M.V. UChuck III”After wandering over 3.600

miles across thenorthwestern U.S. to Canada’s Vancouver Island we arrived at our turnaround point of the trip, Gold River, British Columbia.

Gold River is located at the east end of50-mile long Nootka Soundin the center of the island. The Sound’s deep water and abundant forestscarpeting the surrounding mountains were perfect for the development of the wood harvesting industry giving the small town a huge economic boost.

The town saw rap id expansion in 1967 with the development of a logging and pulp paper facility just west of town. However, by 1998 changing world markets brought on the closure of the both mills and the once prosperous town saw its population fall from 3,300 to 1,300.

T h e t o w n ’ s l e a d e r s wisely utilized tax revenues and closure funds to build an extensive base of public infrastructure, two new schools, new fire department and a large community center, while these revenues were abundant. The beauty of this remote mountain

village nestled along side the deep water of Nootka Sound wasstriking.

Today the Sound’s waters are hometo salmon fish farms, logging camps, remote fishing and hunting resorts and some private getaways. These sites are only accessible by boat or seaplane.

Gold River’s docks where two seaplanes and the single supply freighter, the M.V. UChuck III, are based provide the principle source of supplies for all these operations. This wooden hulled freighter was the purpose of our visit to this remote location.

This refitted World War II harbor minesweeper, a130-foot vessel, services all the communities of the Nootka Sound as well as the remote western island shoreline as far north as the Indian community of Kyuquot.

We rose early to make our 9:00 am departure for a day cruise to the mouth of Nootka Sound. At the pier the Sound’s surrounding mountains were mirrored in the dark calm waters giving the scene a mystical air of a place lost in time.

The adjacent logging yard

was already busy with a huge claw equipped forklift quickly moving loads of logs and dumping them into water. Two very small one-man tugs then moved the logs into floating holding pens to be bound for shipment.

The UChuck crew was busy loading last minute supplies for their customers on the Sound. There were only twelve passengers;five of them were part of a Canadian film crew aboard to document the UChuck cruise.

The crew quickly slid a gangplank in place and we all boarded the vessel. We dropped our daypacks in lounge area and were overwhelmed with the smell of muffins baking in the galley. We followed our noses to the snug galley counter and met Elaine, the cook,an eleven-year veteran on the ship.

With a steaming cup of tea and a hot muffin in hand we went to the open deck to watch the crew depart the dock promptly at 9:00 am. Cruising west through uninhabited mountains, that seemed impossibly high from water level, we left civilization behind in the morning mist.

We quickly determined sitting on the bench in front the wheelhouse was a chilly spot and moved back to the wind-protected stern. The sheer wildness of the scene was breathtaking.

It wasn’t long until we spotted the first of many Bald Eagles sitting regally atop towering spruce trees searching for their morning meal. We cruised past a small rock island covered in the massive sleeping bodies of sea lions. We were all on constant lookout for breeching whales but only saw swirls all day.

Our f r iendly captain , Spencer, invited me into the elevated wheelhouse where he stood next to a beautiful polished maple wood wheel. The captain said the wheel and nearby brass engine control post where from another salvaged vessel and installed during the refitting of the UChuck.

Spencer asked if I like to take a turn at the three-foot wheel for a photo shot. I jumped at the opportunity grasping the polished wheel as he took a shot of me lookinglike some great mariner.

Eventually, we stopped at several large salmon fish farms and logging camps del iver ing suppl ies and picking up recycled water containersempty propane tanks and trash. The ship utilized a 40-foot, 3.5-ton boon near the bow for loading and unloading supplies.

The on board film crew were busy filming each stop and utilized a drone launched from the deck to rise above the vessel and film its progress up the waters of the Sound. Occasionally, if the windswere strong, the crew would request the captain to slow the vessel so they could retrieve their flying camera.

At one point near the Quiet Cove area the boat drifted to a stop as two men in ocean kayaks approached the vessel from a nearby cove. They had been fishing from their kayaks and camping on shore at night. Our vessel had an improvised sling they hooked to the boon and lowered into the water. One by one the kayakers paddled onto the sling and were brought on board.

Our captain said he had brought them out almost a week before wet launching them with the sling. Arriving at Quiet Cove’s docks we picked up four back packers who had been hiking the high country for a week. Once on board both the hikers and kayakers immediately went for a visit with Elaine for a piping hot bowl of her Thai Coconut Chicken soup and freshly baked pumpkin spice cookies.

Motoring back to Gold River we spotted two black bears working the shoreline for the migrating salmon. Seeing them I thought of the backpackers and kayakers sleeping in the wilds with these large carnivores.

As the sun dipped behind the emerald mountains the temperature began to drop forcing us to seek vantage points out of the wind. Standing next to the funnel rising up midships was like standing next to a warm heater. It was a great place to socialize with our fellow passengers about their adventures and home bases.

It was a dusky 6:00 pm as we again crossed the gangplank thanking our most friendly crew for the interesting cruise.

Jesus is the reason for the season. No doubt it's winter. I just want to stay inside where it is warm and that is what I am doing but I like to go to Mount Ida and church and see friends.

Monday evening coming home from Mount Ida a deer hit our car broke the grill and bumper. It is drivable and thanks to be God Harrison and I were not hurt. That was the first deer I ever hit but came close a few times.

Edith Chambers enjoyed a surprise birthday party potluck at her home. Her birthday was December 5. Those attending were her son, Tim and Linda Chambers, Edith 's daughter, Myers Rob ins ; g randch i ld ren , Kimberley and Brandon Williams their children, Calvin and Lynlea; Charlie Chambers, and friend, Paige Zimmerman and Edith 's cousin, Mary Stipe. They had and enjoyable time, delicious meal and wished Edith many more happy birthdays.

John Gillam was honored with a birthday party at the home of his daughter, Lindsay Gil lam, those at tending where his sister, Sue Blair, his daughters, Lindsey and Mary Beth Gilliam and some of John's friends. Happy Bir thday Brad Davis and Lindsey Gilliam on December 27; Samantha Smith on December 28; Aiden Hutts on December 29; Melody Hill and Megan Beggs on December 30. Happy 67th anniversary to Bert and Ruby Johnston and Happy 66th to John Harrison

and Melba Reed on December 31.

I don't ever remember so many obituaries in the Montgomery county news as there was the week of December 28. They were Catherine Claussen age 90; Bill Black age 98; Chester Miller age 70; Charles Red Bird Redding age 67; Nelda Colgrove age 101, Lille Bell Bryant age 78; Clyde Carr age 78 and in the Yell County News were Glenna Oglebee Goodson age 84; Brenda Cates age 50; Beula Torrence age 92; Nancy Lawrence age 67, Larry Don Ellis age 53; Caryn Cox age 45. Please pray for their families, all the sick, bereaved, unsaved, our leader, our military, and everyone.

Hope everyone had their pipes wrapped or safe heat to keep them warm. Winter has

certainly arrived at least for a few days. Hope your animals have a warm place to go and please check on our elders and the folks who aren’t feeling well or live alone.

Careful with the space heaters and the propane space heaters too. Make sure you have plenty of clearance between them and anything flammable and a little fresh air to keep them working well and prevent carbon monoxide buildup..

Upcoming th ings for school, are few since the students are enjoying winter break. The only school activity I am aware of is the annual Christmas Classic which will be the last week in December.

Norman City Hall will be open regular hours this week and next week

We may have some folks driving around looking for easy opportunities to take things that don’t belong to them, so lock your cars, and carry your purses with you when you go shopping or lock them in the trunk. If you see something funny or someone you don’t recognize at your neighbors’ house, get what info you can safely get and call your neighbor.

I am wishing you a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Brrrrrr i t is cold this morning. Hope you all are toasty warm. The Christmas Blessing was Friday morning. It went pretty fast and no glitches. We here at the pantry wish everyone a MERRY M E R RY C H R I S T M A S . We will get back to normal b u s i n e s s n o w t h a t t h e Christmas Blessing is over. This has been such a busy

month but a fun time. We thank all of you that donated money and food to help make this happen. We ask for your continued prayers and your support. We help a lot of families and can't do this without you. Will write more about the blessing later but for now Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Drop by to visit us at the Annex.

Monday morning we started off our week right with our daily exercise program followed by some more exercise and a lot of fun by bowling on our x-box. We enjoyed singing gospel songs and Christmas carols in the chapel after we ate a delicious lunch. We sharpened our mind skills a little by working on word puzzles in our apartments to pass along the rest of the afternoon.

Tuesday morning we began our day with our morning exercise program and then we made cookies, candies, and fudge to fix up some pretty Christmas boxes we wanted to share with our friends throughout the community. We had a delicious lunch before finishing up our goodie boxes, and then we watched a Christmas movie while we snacked on some popcorn and sipped on some ice cold sodas.

Wednesday morning after our morning exercise we had a nice visit by Caddo Hills’ third grade classes and they did a great job singing Christmas songs to us and sharing cards they had made. They sure put smiles on lots of faces that morning! We met up front and loaded up in the van and headed into Hot Springs where we went to Colton’s steak house for lunch, before hitting the mall to do some Christmas shopping, and we shopped till we dropped, believe me! Those who stayed home attended our weekly Bible study group and we had a good attendance again despite some of us being out on the shopping trip. We had a nice service by Community Outreach when we finished up our supper.

Thursday we had our exercise class and then we loaded up on the van and went over to the preschool where

we took some goodies to them and we enjoyed hearing them sing us some songs. We had a great Christmas program after lunch in the auditorium.

Fr iday morning af ter exercise we met back in the activity room where we played song bingo and we always enjoy reminiscing to the old tunes we hear as we play. We loaded up in the van and went and passed out our goodies and Christmas cheer to some of our good friends here in town. We had a delicious lunch and then we loaded up on the big van and went to the dollar store where we picked up some items we needed to help us get through the weekend, and when we got back home we were greeted by our good friends the yarn workers.

Saturday we had our morning exercise program and then we played bingo right up until we needed to get washed up for lunch! We played several rounds of baggo to fill our afternoon hours full of fun.

Sunday morning after a big breakfast we had our weekly Sunday school class in the chapel, and our afternoon devotional hour had a nice visit from CMM Pencil Bluff and they were a welcomed addition to our afternoon, these two services always leave us feeling as if we can face the week ahead with a smile!

We want to thank all our volunteers for your time and many talents and remind you if you would like to become a volunteer, please feel free to contact myself or Sherrie Morris at 870-867-2159. We would also like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from our home to yours!

A Glenwood woman plead no contest to one count of hindering apprehension of prosecution as part of a plea agreement entered into with the prosecuting attorney’s office.

Nena Lynn O’Neal, age 24 of Glenwood, plead no contest to one count of hindering apprehension of prosecution, a class D felony.

The charge stems from an incident which occurred September 29 of this year. Documents located in the Montgomery County Clerk’s Office state that O’Neal lied to members of the Mont-

gomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Pike County Sheriff’s Office while they were trying to serve a search warrant. Documents reflect that she told officers the suspect was not in the resi-dence she resided in at the

time. He was later found in the home and stated that she knew he was there.

O’Neal was sentenced to 72 months supervised pro-bation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and 176.30 in fees and court costs.

Glenwood woman pleads no contest

Alderman Joe Partain was leery of a huge increase and expressed a desire to use smaller incremental increas-es to “ease them into it.”

The Mayor added that regional had no choice re-garding their increase and reminded everyone that without regional nobody would have water.

Alderman Rick Farmer pointed out that the city wa-ter department lost $243,000 in 2015. He felt that they

needed a larger increase than what the mayor sug-gested to prevent an even greater loss.

Farmer made a motion to increase the rates for city services by six percent. Simpson seconded the mo-tion and it passed 4-1 with Joe Partain casting the lone no vote. Margaret Scurlock was not in attendance.

The rate increase will go into effect January 1, 2017 and will include services pro-vided to customers inside and outside city limits.

A public meeting is sched-uled to take place Thursday, December 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Mount Ida Civic Center.

They voted to give all city employees a 25 cent per hour raise. They also in-

creased Brookie Mayberry’s salary for accounting ser-vices from $770 per month to $800 per month.

They approved the 2017 proposed budget for the city of Mount Ida.

They asked the Mayor to locate candidates for new city attorney. The city is in need of a new attorney due to John Maddox joining the state legislature.

A l d e r w o m a n J o a n Whisenhunt asked if the city had ever considered using a paperless billing system. Mayberry stated that she would look into it. Mayberry stated that the water depart-ment does allow people to set up a bank draft payment with approximately 300 cus-tomers using this system.

University. White stated that he felt the hype lead-ing up to the game and the big game atmosphere was an invaluable in the team’s preparation for the state championship game later in the year.

The Lions opened the season with three 3A op-ponents. Although the team was able to claim victory in all three match ups Coach White admitted that playing up he knew he could just as easily go 0-3 as 3-0.

Fumbles plagued the team as the young players worked to find their rhythm as a team.

Although the Lions marched through the first seven weeks without a loss, it was a painful 42-21 loss at the hands of the Dierks Outlaws that turned things around for Mount Ida.

“Things changed in the locker room and on the prac-tice field that next Monday.” Coach White stated when asked about the game.

A bye due to Mountain Pine’s forfeit was also crucial

in the Lions’ preparation for the playoffs. Mount Ida rolled past Lafayette County and into the playoffs as a one seed out of the 7-2A confer-ence.

Many considered the one seed as the “easy” position, but after an easy win over Johnson County Westside Mount Ida had to fight their way through Conway Chris-tian, Danville and Camden Harmony Grove to earn their spot in the championship game.

The Lions found them-selves in the role of an under-dog three weeks in a row, but continued to come together as a team and show improve-ment week by week.

Coach White cited the return of Spurling against Conway Christian as a major piece of the championship puzzle. The senior added a seasoned blocker on the line who could go out and catch a pass when needed. He also provided a strong presence on the defensive side of the ball.

Once the Lions had earned their place in the state championship game against Hampton Coach White knew his team could go out there and claim the trophy.

Teams like Lamar and Danville had prepared the Lions for the menacing style

of quarterback Hampton presented. The maturity in the young team was seen in the first half of the cham-pionship game. Down 20-7 they fought their way back to a six point deficit by the end of the first half. They opened the second half with a touchdown to take the lead and then set out to set the tempo for the remainder of the game.

“We definitely played our game in the second half.” Coach White stated.

The addition of a line-backer and a shift in the front line stymied the Hampton offense in the second half, but Coach White gave credit for the victory to his players.

“The players are the ones who have to go out there and execute.” he said when asked about their success.

He went on to say that the players never dropped their heads when they got behind and they did what they had to do to win.

Coach White stated that this win is more than just a win for him, or his team. He realizes that the Mount Ida Lions football program gives the community something to rally around and is apprecia-tive of the support he and his team receives from year to year.

He stated that he was happy right where he is. He remarked that as long as it felt right he would keep mak-ing the trek down the hill to the fieldhouse.

“It still feels right so I guess I’ll keep on doing it.” he stated with a smile.

drive.High School Principal

Ron McGuire was not in

attendance, but his report reflected that not only had the Lions won the 2A state championship in football, but Will Cole, a member of the Mount Ida Marching Band, had been selected as first band, first chair in junior high all region tryouts.

Superintendent Hal Landrith spoke to the board about the school bidding on the opportunity to host

the state class A basketball tournament. He stated that he would bid on the state tournament and if Mount Ida didn’t get it he would bid on the regional tournament.

The Standards for Ac-creditation Review with the Arkansas Department of Education was held Decem-ber 8. The review went well with the district found to be in compliance in all areas.

The Montgomery County Yarn Workers have been busy knitting and crocheting again this year. We recently gave away hundreds of hats to the children of Caddo Hills Elementary School. Thanks to Christy Sanders for helping us organize this event at the school. Parents, teachers, and students expressed their gratitude. One teacher described the playground as “a sea of hats”. After distributing baby items to the Community Clinic, hats and scarves to needy folks, and the kids’ hats, we are proud to say we gave away almost 500 hand made items this year! Thanks to all who donated yarn to us and all who knitted and crocheted. If you have extra yarn to keep our effort going , it can be dropped off at the extention office in Mt. Ida or call Carol at 501-538-5816 for pick up. We teach knitting and crocheting at our weekly meetings. All are welcome. Meetings are Fridays, 3:30, at the Assisted Living craft room. We will take a short break for the holidays and begin meeting again on January 6th.pictured left to right are Payton, Opal, Katelyn, Betty, Kathleena, 5 of our Yarn Workers.

~I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear

But the music can’t compare with our Christmas choir hereI have no words to tell you the joy their voices bringFor it is beyond description to hear the Angels sing.

~I know how much you miss me, the pain within your heart

But I am not so far away, we’re really not apart. So be happy for me love ones, you know I hold you dear

And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.~

I send you each a special gift, from my home above, I send you each a memory of my undying love,

Remember, “Love “ a gift more precious than pure gold,It was always most important in the stories Jesus told.

~Please love and keep each other as my Father said to do

For I can’t count the blessings of love He has for youSo have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear

For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
