It was with great pleasure that I attended the Ceremony in January at the site of Abergele Primary Health Care Centre, when Edwina Hart undertook the turf-cutting ceremony. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS As we near the end of the current financial year, we would like to take this opportunity to update you on some of the projects which have been undertaken by your local Council: Christmas Lights The Town Council is responsible for providing the Christmas lights in Abergele each year. These are intended to brighten up the town during the festive period and attract visitors to support our local shops. Pentre Mawr Park The Council has now obtained planning permission and partial grant funding and hopes that the new floodlighting for the skate park and multi-use games area will be up and running before the end of March. This will help to provide our young people with a safe, well-lit place to gather during the darker evenings. A new height barrier is also to be installed at the park entrance. Gele Park £10,000 has been contributed towards new children’s play equipment for the park, which should be installed by March. Traffic Calming Funding has been secured for new traffic calming measures in Pentre Mawr Park, following concerns from the local police that some vehicles were being driven at excessive speed through the park, putting pedestrians at risk. Further funds will be committed by the Council in future years to look to address other problem areas in the town. Town Maps & Cycle Rack Three new town maps have now been ordered. These will undoubtedly be of use to residents and visitors alike and will be installed outside the library, at Water Street corner and in Pensarn. A new cycle rack has also been ordered and this will be sited next to the new map outside the entrance to the library on Market Street.

Litter Bins Three new litter bins will hopefully be provided in and around the town as part of a new sponsorship scheme being operated by Conwy County Borough Council. Grants A number of grants are made by the Council annually in October to support local voluntary groups. This year, a substantial sum has been donated to enable these groups to continue to operate and provide social, recreational, sport, artistic and cultural activities to members of our community. Financial support is also given to a number of charities who operate locally and provide much needed support. Does your group require funds to keep going, or for new projects? If so, talk to Conwy Voluntary Services Council on 01492 534091 or visit their website at www.cvsc.org.uk to find out more about funding available for local voluntary groups. Newsletter & Town Guide The second edition of the biennial Town Guide is currently under production. Subject to receiving the necessary levels of advertising revenue, it is hoped that this will be distributed to all households and local information points during early April. The Council also continues to fund the quarterly Newsletter, which we hope is a useful source of information for local residents. Police Community Beat Manager The Council would like to thank P.C. Hall for his commitment to the town during his two year period as CBM for Abergele. It also welcomes P.C. Sharon Thorogood, who took over from P.C. Hall during January. Community Skip As part of a Government ‘Tidy Towns’ initiative, CCBC will providing a community skip for Abergele for one day only. This will be placed in Maes Canol from 9am on Thursday 19th March and will be removed once full.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS (cont’d) Christmas Window Competition The Council is pleased to announce that the winner of the Christmas Window Competition for 2008 was Star Video, Bridge Street. Runners-up prizes went to Hillary’s Floral Displays and Cariad Bride and several ‘Commended’ certificates were issued to recognise the efforts of other traders. The Council would like to thank all the traders for entering into the Christmas spirit and would like to encourage residents to keep supporting our local shops during these difficult economic times. “Bright Ideas” Competition Entries have now been received for the Council’s second competition to design a new Christmas motif, run with the help of the Abergele junior schools. The winning motif will be announced shortly and will then be made into a rope light motif for inclusion in next year’s lighting display, alongside last year’s winning design.

Local Clubs / Organisations ABERGELE ROTARY CLUB Since our last report, members visited the Abergele Red Cross offices, to see the work they do. This resulted in the club presenting them with two special wheelchairs to be used locally, at a cost of £500. Other recent donations made by the Club have included £200 each to Tŷ Gobaith Hospice and MacMillan Cancer Care, £200 sponsorship for St Kentigerns Hospice via a local man running in the New York marathon, the Eye Laser Fund £200 and Llanfair TH Senior citizens £100. In November, the Club’s community service team carried out £591 in upgrading work on the Christmas float, adding to the safety of Santa and the enjoyment of all. Despite the adverse economic climate, the collecting tins were as full as ever, good news for the many good causes that will benefit in the coming year. The Club thanks all that helped with the float over the festive season and Abergele Tesco, for their hospitality and for allowing the collection day to take place. On the 6th of January our first speaker meeting of 2009, had to be cancelled, due to ice on local roads making it unwise to travel. On a brighter note, at the next meeting, our Vocational Service Chairman reported that 12 pupils from Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan had taken up the club-sponsored “Junior Leadership Scheme” at a cost to the club of £440 and that all 12 were on target to receive the award. He also reported that the school is interested in helping with our next Rotary In-Care Evening. We meet at: Kinmel Manor Hotel, for information about Abergele Rotary or Rotary International, please see our web site: www.abergelerotary.org

INNER WHEEL The Inner Wheel year continues under the Presidency of Sally Kirkham, and the Club was visited at the October meeting by Gaenor Roberts, from the jewellery shop TLWS in Abergele who gave an insight into how the business had grown in recent years, and who brought a considerable collection of exciting jewellery for members to see. Apart from many items from Wales, products are obtained from India, Thailand, and Indonesia. At the November meeting, members had a very interesting talk from Mr Peter Robinson, from the Rhyl Branch of the RNLI, who spoke about the work of the RNLI and history of the Rhyl station, which has been in being since 1850. Two boats are now stationed there, one being a sea- going vessel and the second an inshore lifeboat, both of which are used to rescue people in difficulties. In December a very enjoyable Christmas dinner was held at the Kinmel Manor Hotel, at which members and guests were entertained by ‘The Soggy Bottom Boys’, a banjo band, who very generously donated their fees to Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospice. The Coffee Morning and Charity Market at the Old Peoples Club in November raised in excess of £500, which is being donated to the RNLI and other local charities, and the President expresses her thanks for the generosity of all those who supported the event. A further Coffee Morning is scheduled for March 28th, the proceeds being donated to Air Ambulance Wales as well as other local charities. The knitted ‘Easter Chicks’ each containing a chocolate crème egg will soon be on sale through several local outlets. Donations of wool for the knitted blankets for the ‘Load a Lorry’ project can be left at Slaters petrol station.

ABERGELE AUTUMN CLUB The Club for all Seasons 2008 proved to be a very successful year for our Group, having enjoyed eight coach trips of special interest, and the year ended with a most enjoyable visit to the beautiful Maenan Abbey Hotel where we had an excellent Christmas dinner. We began 2009 with a visit to the Trafford Centre on 28 January, followed by our annual visit to the Lion Hotel for lunch to celebrate St David’s day. A steady increase in membership has resulted in the introduction of a waiting list; however, anyone who would like to join the Club can visit us at the Community Centre on Tuesdays between 10am and noon. You will be welcomed with a complimentary cuppa and you may sign the waiting list. When a vacancy arises, you will be contacted. We look forward to 2009, where our members can continue to meet in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Frederick Hunter Secretary - Tel: 01745 824668

ABERGELE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION We are now into a relatively quiet time of the year for the Branch, following a great deal of activity in October and November. In 2007 we had our most successful Poppy Appeal ever, with 41% increase over the previous year, which left us with the task of trying to repeat the achievement! We had no need to worry, because the total paid into the bank in November 2008 was slightly higher than at the same stage last year, at £8,952. This represents most of what will be the final total, but there are still some payments coming in. Once again, we have to thank all of you for your generosity. This money will be used to fund welfare support in the ex-Service community, helping to meet a need which is set to continue for a long time to come. Also, our thanks once again to all those shops and businesses who allowed us to collect, or site static collection points on their premises. The other big event for us was Remembrance Sunday, when we had an excellent turnout, particularly of young people. It is at least ten years since I can remember St Michael’s Church being so full for the Service of Remembrance. Thank you in particular to all those who braved the wind and rain on the return march, and especially to our Mayor, Cllr Ron Peacock, for taking the salute in what proved to be a very exposed position. I think he and our Branch Chairman Fred Taylor got wetter than anyone else! Please remember that you do not have to be ex-Service to join the Legion. The Branch meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month (except December) in the Function Room at the Pen y Bont in Bridge Street, and we are always delighted to welcome prospective members. John Geraghty Branch Secretary Tel: 01745 827503

ABERGELE W.I. The Institute meets every 2nd Monday in the month at the Community Centre and posters are displayed in the town to advertise each meeting. In addition, the Craft group meet twice a month on a Tuesday afternoon – new members are always welcome. The spring programme includes a talk by Mr Gareth Parry on his work as a translator and then in April there will be a talk by the Bio-Diversity Officer, Conwy County Borough Council. In May, the meeting will discuss resolutions to be put forward at the AGM in London, while in June, members will look forward to hearing about the National Garden Scheme. PENSARN COFFEE AND CHAT CLUB Following a very enjoyable Christmas lunch and then a New Year celebration party, the members are looking forward to their AGM in February, when details of the year’s plans will be discussed. The Club continually meet on a Friday morning for coffee and a chat. We are sorry to record the death of Mrs Edith Cross who had been a very faithful member for years, although due to her great age and failing health she had not been able to attend often during the last few months. We extend our sympathy to her family and her many friends who all miss her. Other members have not been well and we wish them all a speedy recovery.

In July we plan to do a production at Church House and, once again, donate the proceeds to charity. TWINNING NEWS The citizens of Barmstedt (Germany) celebrate the first weekend of Advent by holding their Christmas Market in the centre of town. Members from North Wales were invited to join in the celebrations along with friends from Roissy-en-Brie (our French twin town). All roads into the town became traffic free to allow hundreds of stalls selling Christmas decorations, wood carvings, candles, pottery and food to be sold, the Christmas atmosphere was enhanced by school and town bands and orchestras. A Russian choir performed in the church and carols were sung. Our hosts also organised a day in Hamburg to visit the newly opened Maritime Museum on the regenerated docklands and there was time to enjoy the Christmas spirit at the Hamburg Christmas Market in front of the Town Hall.

For further information about the Twinning Association please contact the Chairman, Mr Derek Holland Tel: 01745 823542. THE PROVENCE LUBERON MARATHON 5 OCTOBER 2008 The Abergele Harriers Running Club fielded a team of four runners (Alan Taylor, Richie Lee, Alan Lucas & Rob Spotswood), who were invited to join their town twinning counterparts from the French Running Club – Roissy-en-Brie, near Paris and the German Running Club – Barmstedt near Hamburg. We flew from Birmingham to Marseille on Thursday where we collected a hire car and eventually found our accommodation. On Friday, we visited Marseille, Toulon, Bandol and St. Tropez. We then headed for our accommodation in Mirabeau, near Pertuis, where the marathon was held. On Saturday, we went sightseeing through rural Provence, visiting a wine museum and some remote medieval villages such as Rousillion and Benoix, where we had lunch. We joined the rest of the Roissy and Barmstedt teams at Pertuis in the evening, for registration.

We were up early on Sunday for the race. It was a cold start and we had to scrape ice off the windscreens. Alan Taylor, Alan Lucas and Andreas Theel from Barmstedt, ran the marathon, whilst Richie and Rob joined the French & German runners for the half marathon. The French and Germans got into the spirit of the event by running the race as a group in fancy dress or in costume. The temperature rose during the run and hit the mid 20s by midday. The course was constantly undulating and on varied terrain, woodland, lake shores, fields, vineyards and cobbled streets. The scenery and support was spectacular throughout and eventually our tired legs found the finish line. We took advantage of a free post race massage and our efforts were rewarded with a couple of bottles of Luberon wine and a finisher’s medal. The highlight of the weekend came on Sunday night, where Ernest from Roissy had somehow got our entire party invited to a gala dinner and dance in Pertuis, with champagne on tap. This was a private function and we were privileged to be there. We spent a leisurely day on Monday at the coast near Marseille and returned home on Tuesday. All in all it was a fully packed weekend that we’ll never forget. We have formed lasting friendships with the French and German runners, as a result of an introduction in 2002 via the Colwyn Bay, Abergele and District Twinning Association. This was the latest of many such events and it won’t be the last. Alan Taylor

ABERGELE HANDICAPPED CLUB The Club welcomed members back in January and handed out Newsletters with the various activities planned for the coming months. These include musical entertainment, a slide show and bingo. The Club meets at the Old People’s Club every Tuesday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm. In the warmer months, outings are arranged. The annual subscription is £4 and new members are always welcome. On Saturday 18 April the Club will hold their spring Coffee Morning at the Club Rooms, the proceeds going towards Club funds. Abergele is seeking Fairtrade Status Following the arrival of the Fairtrade flag in Abergele at the end of last year meetings have been held to take steps to enable the town to gain Fairtrade status. A steering group has been set up and this includes representatives of the Town Council and voluntary organisations. The group will work towards making Abergele a Fairtrade town. In order to do this, members of the steering group are exploring where in the town Fairtrade products are already available and which local workplaces and community organisations, including churches and schools already serve Fairtrade tea, coffee, biscuits etc. Do let us know where in Abergele Fairtrade products are already available! The Fairtrade movement enables third world producers to receive a realistic price for the goods they produce. On Thursday 5th March there will be a Fairtrade Coffee Morning beginning at 10.00am in ITACA at Hesketh House. At this Coffee Morning there will be an opportunity to meet with a Sri Lankan farmer who benefits from the Fairtrade movement. Do come along and hear from him! If there is anyone else interested in being involved in the steering group meetings do please get in touch with Cllr Sam Rowlands, secretary to the committee. If you know which shops, cafes, businesses, workplaces etc already have Fairtrade products available, contact Sam, on e-mail: [email protected]

EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT HESKETH HOUSE In 2001 a group of volunteers came together to form Abergele Youth Action which aims to extend activities and opportunities for young people within their community. Since then lots of young people have enjoyed a range of activities including fun and games in the park, football, kick boxing, rock climbing, mountain biking and high ropes adventure activities. Funding from a range of sources including Abergele Town Council has enabled these activities to take place. Since 2005, the Internet facility in Hesketh House known as Itaca… has provided opportunities for young people to get involved in creative activities that can unlock their potential, enable them to make positive decisions and experience life changing opportunities. Itaca… does this by using IT alongside formal and informal training sessions to develop skills, positive attitudes, relationships and friendships that can help young people to engage with their communities. Itaca… also provides opportunities for older members of the community to learn new skills.

It is available for private hire for that special occasion and can accommodate up to 40 guests. Catering can be arranged to suit specific requirements and a licensed bar is available on request. Opportunities exist for people of all ages to volunteer in the café as well as in the delivery of informal training for people of all ages. Abergele Youth Action is grateful to Conlan International Ltd; the owners of the building, for opening up this unique opportunity and is pleased that the Italian students will continue to visit Abergele to improve their language skills as well as experiencing life and work in North Wales. This exciting new development will provide excellent facilities for the community to enjoy as well as providing a much needed income to contribute to the long term sustainability of Abergele Youth Action. For more information please contact the project manager, Linda Tavernor, on 01745 826570 and visit the website: www.itaca-aya.org.uk

The Directors and Trustees of Abergele Youth Action are pleased to announce that they have now taken control of the whole of Hesketh House. Excellent training and conference facilities in this specially converted Victorian building in the heart of this historic market town include flexible room formats for large groups and seminar rooms for smaller numbers, IT and audio visual equipment, an onsite café bar and private parking. It is hoped that all members of the community will make full use of these facilities. Cytun Abergele Churches Together in Abergele Cytun Abergele Churches Together continues to promote ecumenical work in the town. In January members of the various churches came together for a supper at the Kinmel Manor and to hear Catrin Matteson give a very moving and fascinating talk about her voluntary work in Madagascar. Profits from the evening are going towards that work.

Members of the churches in Abergele invite you to join them at their Holy Week and Easter services.
