Otherwise, a housing allowance will be provided. Comment on the residential/commuting expectations for your next minister. We expect our next minister to become an integral part of our church and local community. State any incentives: A relocation allowance will be provided. A paid sabbatical following five years of service will be provided. An allowance for professional development is provided. Describe peer and professional supports available for ministers in your association/conference: The resources of the Genesee Valley Association of the United Church of Christ and New York Conference of the United Church of Christ are available for the new minister. If applicable, describe how your church will adopt part-time adjustments in the pastoral schedule to support a minister’s bi-vocational employment: Not applicable 1d. WHO IS GOD CALLING TO MINISTER WITH US? Describe the ministry goals you envision your next minister co-collaborating with the congregation to achieve. Along with our next minister, our congregation hopes to further strengthen our spiritual core and maximize our God given time, talents and treasures. We wish to continue to be a welcoming place of worship and community and to further foster our outreach efforts. More specifically, we wish to reflect upon and potentially reconsider our worship styles and Sunday school programs (especially adult education). We hope to explore additional ways to be more open, affirming and caring towards all members. We also desire to generate ideas of how to support our communities both locally and globally including new efforts (e.g. service projects) and ones that will further strengthen our congregation’s passions and interests (e.g. environmental issues).

Describe how your vision of the minister you are now seeking will assist the congregation in making an impact beyond its walls. As a congregation, we view ourselves as being active and mission-driven with church members assuming responsibility for many roles (e.g. organizing meals, visiting the sick, sending cards, praying, prayer shawls, emergency assistance fund). Evangelism is conducted through local volunteer opportunities (e.g. Rush-Henrietta Food Terminal, Friends in Service Here ride program, the CROP walk, Habitat for Humanity), renting our building to community groups (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous and Home School Academy) and through financial and hands-on support of denominational, national and global concerns. Based on this strong foundation of active outreach, we envision a minister who will build community, encourage consensus, and work with others in our congregation as well as local faith groups (e.g. Rush-Henrietta Interfaith League) and wider organizations (e.g. Global Ministries, Church World Service) toward common missions/goals. This minister would be a leader/facilitator, assisting the congregation in reaching out to our neighbors near and far through existing outreach missions as well as helping to identify fresh opportunities for service. As inclusion is an area of great importance to our members, we seek a minister who has a strong commitment to peace and justice within us, between us, in our community and across the globe. Specify language requirements or culturally-specific capacities preferred in a next ministerial leader, and why those matter to the congregation’s sense of calling. At this time, our congregation has no language or culturally-specific requirements. Based on what you have learned about who your church is, who your church’s neighbor is, and who God is calling the church to become, describe four areas of excellence from The Marks of Faithful & Effective Authorized Ministry that your next minister will display to further equip the congregation’s ministry in these areas. 1. Exhibiting a Spiritual Foundation and Ongoing Practice By exhibiting his/her own commitment to prayer and discipleship, our next minister will help our church to expand and deepen our spiritual core. He/She will demonstrate a strong commitment to ministry and stewardship and will effectively collaborate with our church as we discover ways to further strengthen our spirituality and support our local and wider community. Based on the knowledge that the broader community surrounding our church tends to be somewhat non-traditional in their beliefs about worship but has a strong practice of altruism and giving, we seek a minister who can lead us in providing meaningful worship experiences and activities for all while inspiring us and facilitating the consideration of new ideas and possibilities.

2. Caring for All Creation We seek a minister who will be committed to our mission of caring for and welcoming all God’s children to our table. We are proud to be a certified Open and Affirming church. We have members from all ages and backgrounds and we are located in a diverse community which creates wonderful opportunities as well as challenges. We seek a leader who can help us to nurture all people. We hope to find innovative ways to support and act compassionately towards one another as we travel along our shared and individual spiritual journeys. Finally, we hope our next minister will share in our passion for environmental concerns helping us continue to be cognizant of how our decisions and behaviors impact all God’s creations. 3. Strengthening Inter and Intra Personal Assets As we are faced daily with a divisive and polarized world, we desire a minister with strong moral character and personal integrity, one who demonstrates the self-awareness and emotional maturity to be both an effective pastor and role model to our diverse congregation. We seek a spiritual counselor who will interact with others compassionately, affirming their own sense of dignity and assisting others in the church to do the same. To help us reach out to those in our neighborhood and surrounding areas, we are searching for a leader who will build community, communicate constructively and respectfully with others while enthusiastically spreading God’s message of love and peace. 4. Building Transformational Leadership Skills It is our wish that our next minister will lead the congregation by working together to frame a vision, collaboratively planning and preparing to put this vision into action. This individual will take the initiative in leading while delegating and lifting up the gifts of others, encouraging leadership development through continuing education and lifelong learning. He/She will empower us to be faithful to God’s call, reflective of Christ’s mission, and open to the surprises of the Holy Spirit as we seek to find meaning in our daily lives and relationships with others.

2. WHO IS GOD CALLING US TO BECOME? “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 NRSV)

Who is God calling you to become as a congregation? Henrietta United Church of Christ is a large, spiritually inspired family of faith. We care for each other, appreciate each other’s gifts and do our best to respect each other’s differences and talents. We aspire to enrich our existing faith community by attracting many of the new families and empty nesters moving to our area. At the same time, we wish to continue learning more about each other, enhance our collective journey with Christ and make a positive impact in our wider community. Describe how God is calling you to reach out to address the emerging challenges and opportunities of your community and congregation.

Since expanding and enhancing our facilities in 2013, our church has been able to offer more opportunities for community groups to better utilize the space. Some of these organizations include Home School Academy, Neutral Ground (adults-in-relationship transition support group), numerous Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community worship services. We recently updated our playground to be more welcoming to all children. This demonstrates to the community the importance our congregation places on children. One of our youth planned and performed much of the work as part of his Eagle project. Some of our congregation participated in the work as well. This endeavor was partially funded by Memorial Gifts Committee. Within our sanctuary we are actively working to upgrade our audio/visual system. To ensure a dynamic and meaningful worship experience for all. Our Outreach Committee continues their work in identifying organizations, families and individuals that need our congregation’s support. Some of the causes we currently support include: Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM), Habitat for Humanity, Friends in Service Here (FISH), Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal (RHAFT), sponsoring refugee families, Church World Service (CWS), CROP and our congregation’s youth and adult missions – locally, regionally, nationally and globally. We seek to deepen the connection with our community by further recognizing its needs and striving to meet them.

3a. CONGREGATIONAL REFLECTIONS ________ Describe your congregation’s life of faith. Henrietta United Church of Christ is an Open and Affirming, child loving, mission minded, spirit nurturing Christian community, caring for God’s creation. We wish to : To strengthen our spiritual core To genuinely care for each other To connect with our neighbors both near and far To maximize our God given time, talents and treasures for ministry Describe several strengths or positive qualities of your congregation. Many have stated how open, warm and welcoming we are to newcomers. The church has become like family for many. This is an active, busy church with opportunities for all levels of participation. The majority of our congregation regularly attend the engaging and vibrant worship services. Our congregation has a wide cross section of ages with some families having multiple generations attending. We have programs for children of all ages from cradle to college (Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Mission Week, a very committed Youth Group and much more). We appreciate the rich heritage of our past and are excited about the future. Our church acknowledges diverse denominational backgrounds, theological perspectives and political views and seeks to respect, accept and love each other as children of God. Describe what worship is like when your congregation gathers. Our congregation generally worships in the sanctuary but has been known to be flexible. For example, during the year of our renovation we met at a local school. Our usual Sunday worship follows a fairly traditional sequence: Call to Worship, Opening Prayer, Children’s Time, Passing of the Peace, a Scripture Lesson followed by a Sermon, Prayers of the People including the Lord’s Prayer, the Offering

11

and Benediction. Selections from our extensive music program (Choir, Bell Choir, Chime Choir, Worship Band) are woven throughout the worship experience. We frequently change the order of service as needed. A typical infant/child baptism is performed during our regular Sunday service with the family coming forward to the baptismal font. Some parents choose to have Godparents while others do not. The parents meet beforehand and plan the ceremony with the pastor. The congregation affirms the baptism from the pews with a responsive reading. A deacon presents the family with a small gift on the congregation’s behalf. Baptism is included with the Children’s Time so the children can be part of the experience. The child is then presented to the congregation by the pastor. We also offer youth and adults the opportunity of baptism, dedication, or reaffirmation of faith. The pastor works with all participants to craft a meaningful baptismal experience. “Good preaching” is planned, sensitive to a wide audience, focused, relevant, dynamic and presented in a variety of styles to keep the congregation engaged and inspired. Describe the educational program/faith formation vision of your church. Just as the current search committee has a youth representative, youth are encouraged and welcomed to join other committees, groups and boards. Our youth are active in Shantytown (youth project to raise awareness of homelessness), lock-ins, a summer mission week, confirmation classes and attendance at Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center as well as State and National Youth events. This firm foundation has led many of our youth to be active members as adults, many participating with children of their own. In recent years we have offered daytime and evening Bible study groups for adults, usually during Lent or early fall. Sessions are sometimes led by the pastor, but are often led by members of the congregation with an interest in a certain topic or issue. These groups usually meet once or twice a week for several weeks, allowing our members to participate within their busy schedules. For example, last year there were sessions studying the Book of Luke and a Lenten series that met both during the day and in the evening. Members have stated that these classes gave them a much better understanding of the Bible and a strong feeling of fellowship. Hearing other people’s opinions added to their knowledge of the scripture. Describe how your congregation is organized for ministry and mission.

We hold an Annual meeting and Congregational meetings as necessary. Information is disseminated through monthly Newsletters, Happenings (this is a weekly email of upcoming events and announcements), along with verbal and printed announcements in church.

Our Nominating Committee recruits members for the various Boards and Committees. These nominees are elected at the Annual meeting and serve three years.

Church council, the primary decision making body, meets monthly for about 2 hours, with representatives of all Boards and Committees. All congregants are invited to participate as well.

Having done several visioning sessions as a congregation, we feel we are not currently struggling for a vision. We remain open to the changes the future may bring us. When it comes to decision-making, how many hours are spent in meetings per month?

While it is not required, the Senior Pastor is always welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.

How was that accomplished? The congregation took several years to plan all aspects of our renovation and expansion project. In the midst of this project, however, the church was faced with a budgetary shortfall. The project team had to make a significant financial decision in a short amount of time. After meeting with the Trustees and Treasurer, several possible solutions were examined. The Church Council was advised and the options were presented at a Congregational Meeting. After thoughtful discussion, a vote was taken by paper ballot and a final solution was determined collectively by the members of the church.

Describe the range of occupations of working adults in the congregation: We have a broad range of occupations in both blue collar and white collar fields including: teachers, nurses, college professors, self-employed persons, computer specialists, secretaries, and tradespeople. Describe the mix of ethnic heritages in your congregation, and the overall racial make-up. Most UCC congregations tend to describe themselves as “diverse.” Yet, the vast majority of UCC congregations are mono-cultural. What does diversity mean in your context? We are basically a mono-cultural Caucasian congregation, with a few exceptions. We are proud that we demonstrate diversity in other ways such as economic, political, age, sexual orientation, and family structures. Has your congregation recently had a conversation about welcoming diversity, or do you plan to hold one on the near future? Please note the date. Comment after the exercise: We officially became an Open and Affirming congregation on June 3, 2012 after following the UCC guidelines for discernment. This has been included in our Statement of Faith.

REFLECTION Reflection: After reviewing the congregational demographics and activities above, what does this information reflect about your congregation’s overall ministry? Henrietta United Church of Christ is blessed with many skilled people who lead a wide variety of intergenerational programs and activities for our congregation. We have many groups and opportunities for women to gather for fellowship, but less so for men and young adults. Children and youth are viewed as important members of our congregation and are provided with many activities throughout the year. Music is very important to our congregation’s ministry. Henrietta United Church of Christ has diverse music programs with all ages involved. 3e. CHURCH FINANCES Current annual income (dollars used during most recent fiscal year)

Which spaces are accessible to wheelchairs? Entire church facility except basement. Reflection: After reviewing the church’s finances and assets described above, what does this information reflect about your congregation’s mission and ministry?

The highest percentage of the budget supports the ministerial staff. Great care was taken during our recent expansion to make our building “green” with Energy Star certification and handicapped accessible. We strive to be inclusive (i.e. hearing loop, handicap accessible pews, handicapped entrances, elevator). We have retained and maintained our parsonage for future pastors if desired, however the parsonage is not handicapped accessible.

3f. HISTORICAL INFORMATION Name one to three significant happenings in the history of your church that have shaped the identity of your congregation. Add the most important event in the life of your church in the past 10 years. The Henrietta United Church of Christ has a long and proud history, having first been officially affiliated with the Congregational Church in 1816. In the more than 200 years of our ministry there have been many events that have shaped the congregation we have become. How these events were handled influenced the people we are today. In 1833, a 9-year-old girl wanted to speak of her belief in God in our church. This would have been unheard of at the time. Antoinette Brown grew in her faith, later becoming the first ordained woman minister in this country as well as an active reformer working toward women’s rights. Many years later in January 1867, a fire destroyed the church building. Within days, plans were made to rebuild. By August the cornerstone was laid and this church was renamed the First Congregational Church of Henrietta. The success of this rebuild was accomplished partially with the help of the Methodist Church. By 1916, the First Congregational Church became the Union Congregational Church of Henrietta with the merger of that same Methodist church to celebrate the 100th anniversary. By the 1960s we had become Henrietta United Church of Christ. The Town of Henrietta was growing by leaps and bounds. The church building was almost 100 years old and could not be expanded in its current location. This is when the congregation again decided to rebuild at our present location. Within the last 10 years, we officially became certified Open and Affirming. After careful discussion and discernment, the church adopted this resolution. The church has always tried to be accepting of all children of God, welcoming them wherever they are. This philosophy has always been part of our church whether it is children wanting to express their love of God or merging with other denominations. This remains an integral part of our values and beliefs. Describe a specific change your church has managed in the recent past. By 2010 our membership had grown along with all the activities taking place in our building. After much discussion and praying it was decided to renovate our nearly 50-year-old building. The planning process took several years in an attempt to make this change as smooth as possible. Of course, surprises did crop up along the way. If packing a home for a move is an adventure, then packing a church was beyond an adventure! We also had to leave the building for approximately 10 months. Worship and Sunday School as traditionally held had to be altered to fit the temporary space. The church met in a local school for children with special needs, while our church office was housed in a vacant Catholic school building. Patience and flexibility were necessary during this process. Another change is the process we are currently experiencing with the retirement of our pastor after 25 years. This is the longest any pastor has ever served at our church. People became very comfortable

with the status quo. We have spent the last year with a wonderful interim pastor who has been working with us to help the church embrace change to a new settled pastor. Every church has conflict, some minor, some larger. “Where two or three are gathered, there will be disagreement….” Describe your congregation’s values and practices when it comes to conflict. When conflicts arise, they are dealt with by the various boards and committees that oversee those involved. Open, thoughtful, and objective communication is encouraged and concerns are acted upon in a timely manner. The church council and the Church & Ministry Committee meet regularly to discuss potential issues as they may arise. Ministerial History

Comment on what your church has learned about itself and its relationship with persons who provided ministerial leadership: Just as a person learns and grows from each relationship he or she experiences so does a church. Each minister has brought his/her own personality and ideas to the church whether interim or settled. Until our last pastor (who was with us over 25 years) no pastor had stayed longer than 7 years. Each left

their mark on the church with new traditions, favorite songs, or outside passions. Some examples include our former daycare center, inclusion of developmental homes, Habitat for Humanity and Going Green Task Force (environmental initiative). All of our past ministers have left us by their own choice either professional or personal. This has helped us accept change and sometimes even embrace it. We have learned that our church community is not defined solely by the pastor but by the people within it. Has any past leader left under pressure or by involuntary termination? No - None of our past ministers have been asked to leave. However, in 1988, it was evident within weeks that the new pastor and the church were not a good fit and proved to be divisive. Before the church had to start the process to ask him to leave, he turned in his resignation. Has your church been involved in a Situational Support Consultation? Yes. In 1997, a complaint was made about our former pastor regarding a counseling situation. The complaint was thoroughly investigated by leadership of Henrietta United Church of Christ. The New York Conference was kept informed of the situation. No ethical breaches on the part of our former pastor were determined. Nonetheless, a substantial monetary settlement was negotiated and paid by the United Church Insurance Board. Has a past pastor been the subject of a Fitness Review while at your church? No

4. WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR?

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39 NRSV) a. COMMUNITY VISION b. MISSION InSite

4a. COMMUNITY VISION How do the relationships and activities of your congregation extend outward in service and advocacy? The members of Henrietta United Church of Christ are extremely committed to service and advocacy locally, nationally, and globally. To list all the activities would exceed the space on this page. They range from children’s weekly offering to sending members around the world for mission work. Describe your congregation’s participation in meetings, relationships and activities connecting the wider United Church of Christ (association / conference / national setting). Henrietta United Church of Christ is a very active participant in the wider church. Many members are active on all levels. Many local churches love to tell the story of what they are doing in the community to transform lives. Some have identified certain aspects of their witness into the wider community using language shared with other UCC congregations. (Find more information as desired at ucc.org.) Check any statements below that apply to your UCC faith community.

Reflect on what the above statement(s) mean(s) to your community. Is your congregation interested in working toward any of the above statements of witness in the near future? Henrietta United Church of Christ has long been a leader in the community as an advocate for many of the programs listed above. We are an “Open and Affirming” congregation, and active in many parts of the “God is Still Speaking” and “Accessible to All” programs. Henrietta United Church of Christ is very interested and open to new ways we can reach out and better serve our local and wider communities.

Describe your congregation’s participation in ecumenical and interfaith activities (with other denominations and religious groups, local and regional). Henrietta United Church of Christ has faithfully and continuously been an active supporter and participant in both the local ecumenical organization (Rush Henrietta Interfaith League) and the regional GRCC (Greater Rochester Community of Churches). Members of our church have chaired both organizations many times, and served on the boards and committees of both organizations. Our members have also held key leadership roles in the Rush Henrietta Area Food Terminal (RHAFT) as well as the annual CROP Walk and Friends in Service Here (FISH), an interfaith support and transportation network for those in need. Our confirmation classes and youth group are also very active in experiencing many forms of worship and mission projects with faith communities in the area. Henrietta United Church of Christ is very proud of its active and firm commitment to our ecumenical partners in the region.

If your congregation has a mission statement, how does that mission statement compare to the actual time spent engaging in different activities? Think of the range of activities from time spent gathering, to governance, to time spent going out. The Henrietta United Church of Christ’s “Mission Statement” is a vital and living call to action for each member of our church family. The activities and projects listed throughout this profile demonstrate the centuries of commitment and involvement of this church. We have been intentional in living out our faith and mission in the community. The wide range of activities we are involved in continues to expand as the congregation is moved to respond.

Reflect on the scope of work assigned to your pastor(s). How is their community ministry and their ministry in and on behalf of the wider church accounted for in the congregation’s expectations on their time? Our pastoral team here at Henrietta United Church of Christ is the congregation's voice to the community and wider world. We have been extremely blessed with pastoral leadership that looks well beyond our walls and engages us with our neighbors both near and far. The pastors have combined both the church’s interests as well as their own personal passions. While we hope our next pastor will continue some of these pursuits, we are excited about the new possibilities that he/she may introduce to us. The pastoral team has been encouraged and supported by the church in its roles on

the local, national and international levels of involvement. This dynamic synergy has made Henrietta United Church of Christ a global witness to the strengths and beliefs of fellowship and service to all God’s people. It is one of the proudest parts of our community of faith!

4b. MISSION InSite Comment on your congregation’s MissionInsite report with data for your neighborhood(s) or area. What trends and opportunities are shown? Trends: The top headlines about our area are: a) little population change is expected; b) high educational attainment; c) composed of more white collar individuals than blue collar; d) white represents the largest racial/ethnic group; and e) very low poverty compared to other surrounding communities. Opportunities: People in the area report having an extremely strong concern for the environment and a strong practice of altruism and giving. Environmental issues are one of our congregation’s passions. We also have a strong pattern and history of giving locally, nationally, and globally. We might be able to encourage people in neighboring areas to visit our church by highlighting our commitment to environmental concerns and the various way we are involved in “giving back.” We might also consider designing events/activities focused around environmental issues that could be open to the surrounding community. Sixty-seven percent of the people surveyed reported having a pretty low level of religious involvement. This may be a challenge for our congregation in terms of encouraging community members to visit our church. However, one of the top reasons reported by “insiders” in the community (those who had been involved in other faith communities, but are no longer involved or considering no longer being involved) is the lack of a “good faith community” in the area. We are a welcoming faith community and perhaps we could fill this void for some of these individuals. One of the top reasons reported by “outsiders” in the community (those who are not currently participating in a faith community) is the demands of raising children. Our youth program is very successful, but can only continue with new young children becoming part of our programs. We consider this an opportunity – thinking of ways to reach out to young families offering support and programs focused on the demands of parenting. For example, we have just partnered with an organization called Home School Academy with which we hope to develop a deeper relationship. How do your congregation’s internal demographics compare or contrast to a) the neighborhoods adjacent to your church, and b) other neighborhoods with which your church connects? Our congregation’s demographics align with the areas surveyed by MISSION InSITE in many ways. For example, both the congregation and the surrounding area have a mostly homogenous racial make-up with the majority of individuals being white. Both the congregation and the surrounding area are composed of many highly educated individuals. Finally, the “autumn years” is one of the largest

population segments in the area and also represents our largest group of people in the congregation (55%). There are some areas of contrast. For example, the largest population segment in the area is “Singles and Starters” and this age group represents only 14% of our congregation. Although the MISSION InSITE report indicates a homogenous population, we personally experience a greater diversity in our day-to-day lives, communities, schools and neighborhoods. How are the demographics of the community currently shaping ministry, or not? Other cultural and faith traditions are already well represented in our diverse community. We always endeavor to be welcoming to all. What do you hear when you talk to community leaders and ask them what your church is known for? We recently held a forum with our community leaders. They commended Henrietta United Church of Christ for our continued participation in and commitment to the local area. They also commented on the strengths of our community and provided suggestions for church members who want to get more involved. What do new people in the church say when asked what got them involved? Fifty-nine percent of our congregation has been attending for more than 10 years. However, 22% are “new people” who have been attending for 5 years or less. Two major reasons we think new people are attracted to our church are our Open and Affirming status and the wide variety of opportunities for all ages to participate. Something that enriches our family of faith is that 77% of new congregants have participated in congregations of other religious traditions.

5. REFERENCES

Name up to three people who have agreed to serve as phone and written references. Advise the three references: “The contact information you provide may be shared publicly. Please use contact information that you feel comfortable giving to candidates so they can reach you with their questions.” Make sure they are not members of your church but are persons who know your church well enough to be helpful to candidates seeking more information. Request a letter from each reference in answer to the four prompts below. Attach the letters (up to three) as desired. REFERENCE 1 – Geoffrey Black 12223 Detroit Ave. Lakewood, Ohio 44107 315-247-9842 [email protected] Relationship to this church- Former Conference Minister 1) Describe some areas of strength in this churches ministry- Among the strengths of Henrietta UCC are its spiritual vitality, its deep commitment to social justice and environmental stewardship. Faith formation/Christian Education and loving service to the surrounding community are also strengths. 2) Describe some areas for improvement in this churches ministry- I am not aware of any areas of needed improvement in the church’s ministry.

3) Describe a significant experience you have had of this churches ministry- While serving as Conference Minister of the New York Conference, I experienced Henrietta UCC as a local church that had a healthy understanding of the wider church. Its lay leaders and clergy were active participants in the Genesee Valley Association and the New York Conference, providing leadership, facilities and generous financial support. I also had the pleasure of participating in Henrietta’s the 200th Anniversary Celebration in 2016. At that time I was reminded of the rich history of this congregation. It was clear to me at that time that this history is a factor in sustaining Henrietta’s commitment to equality, inclusivity and justice.

4) Anything else you would like to share- Henrietta UCC has a has a very healthy understanding of pastor/parish relations. In my mind, Henrietta UCC stands out as an example of a healthy congregation that has the concept of servant leadership at its core. REFERENCE 2 – Sandy Murray 54 Clearview Drive Pittsford, NY Phone: 585-334-6475 Email: [email protected] Relationship to this church: Most of my association with HUCC was through Dave Inglis and RHIFL. Describe some areas of strength in this church’s ministry: Some areas of strength in the church’s ministry are being involved with the Rush and Henrietta communities. The church is a strong supporter oft he Habitat for Humanity projects. It has been instrumental in forming the present Harvest Home Coalition and building Habitat homes in Rochester, plus other coalitions, in the past, which have been instrumental in building other homes for Habitat. Another area the HUCC has been instrumental in is the formation and continuation of the Rush-Henrietta Interfaith League. Under this umbrella, HUCC has participated in and has a member who is the main person in chairing the annual Rush-Henrietta CROP Walk for Hunger. HUCC is also a participant in the planning of the annual Martin Luther King Day celebration. Describe some areas for improvement in this church’s ministry. Not being a member of the church, I am not really in a position to make recommendations for improvements in this ministry area. This probably would be better served by asking church members

what they perceive from observation. Maybe one area would be to make sure all sides of an issue are equally weighed as far as opinions and conversations. Describe a significant experience you have had of this church’s ministry. Describing a significant experience I have had with HUCC and this ministry is an easy question to answer. Having been involved since 1998, I have had a unlimited educational and spiritual journey due to all of the encounters I have had with HUCC and other members of the various churches in Rush and Henrietta. Anything else you would like to share. Good luck in your search for your new pastor. REFERENCE 3 - Rev. Dr. Kathleen Waters 1342 Broad Street, Syracuse, NY 13224 Phone: 315-380-0744 Email: [email protected] Relationship with the Church: interim pastor (May 2017 – current) Describe some areas of strength in this church’s ministry- • The congregation has a healthy self-understanding and appreciates the people and events that

have shaped their current ministry. They believe God continues to call them into exciting possibilities.

• The congregation regularly contributes to the needs of those beyond HUCC. The facility is in excellent condition and the expanded usage is not only a vehicle to generate additional income; it is a vehicle for the church to connect with the greater community.

• The Children and Youth ministry reflects a strong dedication by the congregation, volunteers and the Associate Pastor.

Describe some areas for improvement in this churches ministry- • The congregation is made up of individuals and families that have been friends for many years.

Because these relationships are comfortable and highly valued, it is easy for members to unintentionally exclude those visiting and outreach into the greater Henrietta community has been lacking. The challenge is to take that strong congregational foundation and increase intentional hospitality and outreach.

• The worship attendance has been in decline for many years and the average age of the congregational members has increased. Although there is desire to see growth, a sustained effort and sacrifice (including discomfort) is absent.

Describe a significant experience you have had of this churches ministry- Prior to my becoming the interim pastor, I attended HUCC as a visitor with my one year old grandson. We went forward during the children’s message and were warmly welcomed and included. That welcome and inclusion has proved to be a strength. Anything else you would like to share- During 2017/18, the congregation engaged in a Mission Study process which resulted in greater clarity of its identity and mission. During this time, diverse views and theological opinions were expressed and healthy discussion took place around the questions: “Who is the Congregation? What is God calling us to be and do?” The complete Mission Study Report, with demographical information, can be an extremely valuable tool for the next pastor. Signature:
