Back in July 2012, San Antonio experienced a true shift in community journalism when LOCAL’s first two newspapers rolled off the press. No one had seen anything like them in this market: monthly, direct-mailed and free news publications focusing on the neighborhood stories no other media covered.

Since then, our newspapers targeting specific ZIP codes grew to six, with plans to launch even more editions during the next few years. LOCAL has also seen total circulation increase to nearly 200,000 copies.

Our formula for news coverage seems to be working. Readers have embraced our style of storytelling, with articles and commentary written by some of the best reporters in the area.

Even more relevant, readers say the papers have become an important part of their lives because of the vital information they contain regarding local events, school activities, traffic issues, crime and so on.

Our goal remains to inform, entertain and educate our audience.

In fact, on the eve of LOCAL’s third birthday, our strategy calls for intensifying neighborhood coverage by drilling down even deeper to bring readers the most interesting and up-to-date coverage of where they live.

Thus, LOCAL is now assigning staff reporters to cover specific ZIP codes and geographic areas, where they will be on a constant lookout for stories that matter to you, your family and your friends.

However, the process is a two-way street. We need to hear from you.

Taxes — a true political footballby SUSAN YERKES

Football fans have a long summer to endure before the season gets rolling this fall. Yet, there’s been

no shortage of political football, with property taxes playing the pigskin.

During the legislative session, everybody had a plan to cut your taxes, and the battles in the headlines got fierce. It’s been a taxing mental exercise trying to keep up with the rhetorical pileups, dramatic tackles and occasional fumbles.

Part of the problem is perspective, known in political life as “spin.”

The glowing merits of one player’s plan were invariably met with a barrage of damning criticism from another player,

who then touted his or her alternative plan’s powerful pluses. The Texas Senate wanted to cut sales taxes. The state House worked to cut property taxes. Everybody had a different solution for the holy grail of tax relief, and everybody had tons of data to prove they were right.

Perplexing. In fact, the Legislature is expressly

forbidden to levy property taxes in Texas – thus the end runs and endless interpretations of the state Constitution. However, lawmakers can — and have — set limits on tax rates imposed by county tax collectors each year.

San Antonio hasn’t raised property tax rates in a dozen years. The thing is, the rates don’t have to rise to blow up your tax bill. A cut in the property-tax rate is a drop in the bucket compared to the rising valuations of most properties. It’s the market value that keeps climbing, and raising your taxes.

According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, median property taxes have risen more than 60 percent since 2000, much faster than the rate of inflation. This year in Texas, Dallas property went up 15 percent on average, while Austin and San Antonio got a relative break with an average of 11 percent.

Counties have their own appraisal

districts, and are required by law to reappraise your property at least every three years. However, it’s not the kind of appraisal you get when you want to sell or buy a home, where you hire a professional to come out and give you an independent appraisal. By necessity, appraisal districts use other methods – comparing home-sales prices in the area, and estimating the amount you would pay to replace your home.

Even if you have the crummiest house in the neighborhood, it’s not unlikely you will get popped with a higher tax bill.

When I got my property-tax bill this spring, I saw the market value of my little condo had risen by nearly 25 percent since last year.

Fortunately, there’s a way to at least try to reduce your own property tax – filing a protest with the appraisal district.

Your appeal is heard by an independent appraisal-review panel, which theoretically has no direct ties

to the appraiser’s office. The last few years I’ve sworn to myself I would do it, and then missed the June 1 deadline. This year, I finally got serious.

I’ll learn a little about the process, at the very least.

San Antonio had its own political football game recently, with one candidate claiming he had helped ease the appraisal process with a bill he passed while in the Legislature, and another candidate claiming the bill made the appeals process much harder, and all the major candidates promising tax relief if elected.

Don’t hold your breath. The political-football game

is likely to keep going as long as politicians are out there politicking. Personally, I find good old gridiron football much more entertaining.

At least, when the game is over you know who won.

However, while peaceful assembly to address a societal ill is a cornerstone of American democracy, recent protests of late — including a gathering on the Northeast Side that tied up traffic, according to reports — are rarely welcome when they complicate the lives of others or lead to violence.

Such dissent does little to convince folks to join the protesters’ cause.

Peaceful assemblies should seek to inspire and motivate; create consensus; foster a sense of community; and empower change.

Unfortunately, some recent protests over the deaths of black men in police custody started out peacefully, but turned into orgies of looting and violence.

There is no excuse for such wanton destruction. No amount of anger or feelings of alienation justify burglarizing stores, burning down pharmacies or damaging other property.

Thankfully San Antonio has been spared such outbreaks, but a recent act of civil protest apparently became more of a nuisance than a rallying point.

In the episode, local protesters in a show of solidarity with residents in Baltimore — the latter group angered by the death of a black man after he suffered a spinal injury while under arrest — blocked a portion of Perrin-Beitel Road and Loop 410 at a restaurant.

Though San Antonio police said the assembly remained peaceful, media accounts reported that many motorists were irked when the traffic flow became interrupted.

No matter how important your cause, very few people will be inclined to sympathize if you are impeding their way to work or home, when they are picking up their children or when they are trying to go about their business.

Nuisance protests don’t inspire support

The right to peacefully assemble is enshrined in the First Amendment,

which recognizes people are allowed to protest government actions so long as no harm is done.

IN OTHER NEWSMINING OPERATIONS AT THE BECKMAN QUARRY — WHICH INCLUDE BLASTING — ARE RESUMING IN JUNE ON THE WEST SIDE of Northwest Military Highway, just north of Loop 1604 and Shavano Park. The quarry, owned by Martin Marietta, has raised the ire of residents in past years over blasting operations. According to a notification from City Manager Bill Hill, Martin Marietta officials “have reached out to city leaders a number of times to explain their approach and the many mitigating measures that they have and will continue to take in order to

minimize the effects of the operation.” Hill said he also has met “with an independent seismic monitoring firm in order to understand how the effects of the blasts are monitored and then reported.” Hill said the mining company, which has conducted occasional blasts on the west side of Military, is now stepping up operations there because it has “completed mining on the east side of N.W. Military Highway and will resume mining on their remaining property, which has Quarry Development zoning.” The city manager said the company is assuring city officials that blasting will be conducted at safe levels, which avoid damage to homes or other structures. Quarterly meetings between the company and city will continue.

THE PERMIT WINDOW AT CITY HALL IN CASTLE HILLS has new hours, according to an online notification — 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. A city bulletin said the new hours create more flexibility for the municipal staff, residents and contractors. Permits are needed to repair or replace air conditioning and heating systems, plumbing, sewer lines, electrical systems, sprinkler systems, roofs, fences and windows. Question: We saw your recommendation last week for treating a front door with Restore A Finish and the Sun Shield. Would like to know if the Sun Shield alone would be effective applied to a mahogany painted door?

Answer: The Sun Shield is not made for painted finishes only for stained varnished doors. If you need to refinish the door, use good enamel called Rust Scat Enamel by Coronado. It comes in oil or latex and can be tinted to any color.

Can Strength Training Reduce the Risk of Osteoporosis?Yes. In her book, Strong Women, Strong Bones, Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts Uni-versity, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, explains that women who walk for exercise have stronger bones than wom-en who don’t exercise at all. But, she says, “…the gentle stimulation of walking takes decades to produce effects.” On the other hand, Dr. Nelson’s own research showed that “...strength training just twice a week dramatically cuts the risk of fractures for postmenopausal women. After a year, par-ticipants gained bone in their hip and spine; they became stronger and their balance improved.” During weight-bearing exercise, the muscles and related tendons place ten-sion on the bones as muscles contract to lift the weight. This action stimulates the body to lay down more bone.Bones and OsteoporosisAccording to The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), “Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture.” Although bones appear to be solid, they actually have a porous, honeycomb-like structure. Healthy bone is about 65% mineral, primarily calcium, and bone tissue is in a continuous cycle of breakdown and remodeling. In growing children and young adults, the bone-building process is hap-pening faster than breakdown, resulting in a net increase in bone mass. However, this balance begins to shift at around age 25, after which we tend to lose bone mass faster than it is rebuilt. As bone density decreases, the spaces in the honeycomb-like structure become larger. If too much bone is lost and these spaces become too large, there is a greater risk of breaking a bone from a minor accident or fall. Werner, who has served on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, received 51.7 percent of the vote over Army retiree Michael Simpson.

Marne, a real-estate agent, decided not to seek re-election. Simpson, who also has served with the local P&Z, was previously Olmos Park’s city manager.

“I’m excited to be elected by a great group of people,” Werner said. “I hope to be worthy of the trust they’ve placed in me.”

According to Werner, Shavano Park has grown over recent years into a city where residents stay involved in a variety of issues. Other than carefully maintaining the current quality of life and service levels, little else needs drastic action, he said.

“I intend on seeing it become only better,” Werner said. “Instead of changing it, the city should just keep getting better.”

Werner said a major issue is the fate of a city-owned 16-acre tract near City Hall, land that a developer swapped with Shavano Park for another tract on which homes now stand.

drainage/runoff issues must be addressed.“I am very passionate about the

municipal tract. I love the natural aspects of it, but there are problems,” Werner said, referring to drainage.

Whatever happens with most of the tract, he hopes a public nature trail will be part of it, he added.

Council members Allan Berrier and Michele Bunting Ross were the top two vote-getters in a three-way at-large council race. Ross received 36 percent to earn a third term.

Berrier, who was appointed last September to replace Todd Braulick after Braulick resigned, collected 33 percent. M.J. Smoot finished with 30 percent.

A Realtor, Ross attributed her re-election to hard work and dedication to accomplish the campaign promises made during the last two terms.

Those promises include improving fiscal responsibility; enhancing communication and transparency; listening to and representing all residents; making decisions based on facts and resident input; and creating community initiatives.

“My hope is that our council maintains, as it has this past year, to work as a team, for the continued

success of Shavano Park,” she added. Berrier, an Army retiree and a dental

insurance adviser, said he and the other candidates tried to stay positive and issue-oriented during the campaign.

“We want to stay fiscally conservative. The city is in good fiscal shape and we want to keep it that way,” said Berrier.

Berrier echoed Werner’s sentiment about helping to settle the municipal tract’s fate.

“It’s a big deal. We need to decide if we want to do something with this or scuttle the whole thing,” he added.

CASTLE HILLS Following a

politically turbulent year, voters awarded full terms to Mayor Tim Howell, Place 2 Councilman Matthew Daggett and Place 4 Councilman Frank Paul.

Last year, Howell was appointed from the council to replace Bruce Kaliff-Smiley, who resigned as mayor during a lingering dispute over the direction the city was taking that saw other city resignations, including the city manager.

Daggett was appointed to replace Stacia Spridgen, who resigned midway

through her first term on council. Paul was appointed to replace Howell on the council.

A lifelong Castle Hills resident, Howell is a business development manager with Sysco Food Services. He received 61 percent in the mayor’s race over attorney David Earl.

“I am humbled by the fact that so many residents came out to say they are happy with the direction the city is heading,” Howell said.

The mayor also said everyone at City Hall is energized by this “vote of confidence and ready to re-engage in the best part of being in city government – leading the city forward in new, innovative and positive ways.”

Daggett, a dentist with a practice in the Olmos Park area, tallied 61 percent vs. Sylvia Gonzales, a retired AT&T employee.

Paul, a retired businessman and consultant, collected 66 percent against George Booth, a property manager/Realtor.

“I want to believe it is because I worked hard. I walked the streets and had great help,” Paul said of his win. He added that, while he has been on the council only since last July, he has been involved in trying to make things better for the city for more than 10 years.

Paul said recent city achievements include approving two digital billboards that will yield revenue for the city, and

pledging to fund a comprehensive drainage survey on the north side of Northwest Military Highway.

The city also is still trying to put behind it the horror of a fire at the Wedgwood Senior Living Apartments Dec. 28, which claimed several lives and left many others injured.

“So, I think the citizens of District 9 believe I have been a good advocate and listener,” Krier said.

The council appointed Krier, a former Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce president, as an interim representative in November 2013 after Elisa Chan resigned for a failed state Senate bid. He ran in May 2014 to complete the final year of Chan’s term.

Now, Krier seeks a “back-to-basics” focus regarding the city’s budget, saying it’s vital that San Antonio reach new accords with its police and fire unions.

Soon enough, Krier added, the city will initiate a public-involvement process in planning for another five-year bond program, which could go before the electorate in 2017.

“There are many infrastructure needs in District 9,” he added.

received voter approval. One was a renewed one-eighth-cent sales tax

to buy conservation easements over the Edwards Aquifer’s recharge zone. The other was a renewed one-eighth-cent sales tax to continue expanding city creekways and green spaces.

Voters also approved four city charter amendments: Raising the mayor’s salary to $61,725, and council members’ pay to $45,722; calling a special election to fill a council or mayoral vacancy with 120 days or more left in a term; and eliminating charter provisions superseded by state law and to update outdated language. A fourth amendment has any streetcar proposal requiring a public vote.

“Today San Antonio voters stood up for freshwater and parks by passing Propositions 1 and 2, which safeguard these natural assets for the health of the city, its families and future San Antonians,” Laura Huffman, The Nature Conservancy’s Texas state director, said in a news release.

It’s all in a day’s work as more tasks, meetings, emails and consultations follow for Nirenberg, who won a second City Council term May 9 to represent parts of the North and Northwest sides, a complex district with a diverse population including Third World refugees, a major

health care complex, growing businesses and increased transportation needs.

“The challenge in District 8 is that everything has to do with how we deal with growth,” said Nirenberg, the former general manager of radio station KRTU-FM. “District 8 is growing twice as fast as the rest of San Antonio in terms of population. We grew 16 percent in the city; we grew 33 percent since the last census in population. In terms of area, we’re also growing.”

District 8 has more than 160,000 residents, according to recent figures.

Nirenberg is looking forward to his second term, after first taking office in June 2013.

“The challenges for District 8 are long-term issues,” he said. “Concern about maintaining and improving quality of life in neighborhoods, at home, jobs and schools continues to grow.”

He said his strategy includes understanding residents’ experiences, what they value, what they’re concerned about and identifying problems.

“Congestion on certain corridors or rising crime or lack of maintenance of public rights of way. The next step is doing an asset inventory. And then, what resources do we have available?” he said. “Everything is growing faster than resources are keeping up with.”

As the city takes its next leap forward, Nirenberg believes good planning is the basic building block of a solid strategy for growth.

Last year, Nirenberg stepped in as chairman of the council’s Comprehensive Plan Committee, which is helping plan growth for the city through 2040.

The committee is assembling stakeholders – school districts, chambers of commerce, utility companies, environmental advocates and public-health organizations.

“It’s easy to say it’s citizen-driven, but you have to create a process. It’s not just about a planning document,” he said. “The process hopefully will be a good one that we can rely on again in 10 or 15 years.”

ROADWAYSHaving adequate roadways to handle

increasing traffic is a priority, Nirenberg said.“There is a tremendous challenge with

westbound traffic … on Northwest Military Highway, which is essentially where Wurzbach Parkway ends,” he said. “That corridor is the main route into the (South Texas) Medical Center, from which we derive $30-plus billion in economic impact annually. So making sure employees, patients, can move in and out of the Medical Center is an extremely high priority for the region in general.”

the city and making it better is another of Nirenberg’s passions.

“Their participation is worth it. Engagement increases only … as we continue to build trust across all institutions,” he said.

“Our first recipient of a citizenship award went to an 8-year-old girl,” he said. “She came to City Council to talk about parks — it was in the middle of the (non-discrimination ordinance) debate. This young girl came with her mother and she waited about three hours so she could have two minutes to speak on parks funding.”

He added: “That struck a chord with me that here was this little girl who waited until midnight on a school night just to have a chance to have her voice heard. As a civic engagement professional, that was inspiring.”

TECHNOLOGY AND OTHER PROJECTSNirenberg is also pushing for more

transparency at City Hall and helping San Antonio become a leader in technology and digital communication.

Eddie Aldrete, a vice president at International Bank of Commerce, introduced Nirenberg at the 2014 State of the District address.

“He’s got some very good ideas on governance. He is looking for ways to improve the process of how citizens are heard at City Hall and increase citizen involvement,” Aldrete said.

The businessman said Nirenberg is studying the use of webcam or Skype technology in a public building such as a library so that more people can speak at council meetings without coming downtown.

“We do that in court systems where a prisoner can appear before a judge via webcam. It’s a way to engage more people, and that’s what Ron is interested in,” he said.

Aldrete said Nirenberg also is looking at a unified digital communication strategy to text 911, as well as policy changes that will help with broadband infrastructure.

Aldrete said Nirenberg’s ideas about high tech are often simple and basic.

“He’s working toward transparency at City Hall, working with other council members, looking at what other city councils do in the way of technology and process,” Aldrete said. “He’s reaching out to constituencies in new ways to get them more involved in the government process.”

Nirenberg believes digital access creates more participation.

“In broad strokes, it means every available opportunity to communicate is used. We’re on (Facebook), all social media, hosting town halls. We change meeting times so people have easy access,” Nirenberg said. “We also go where they are – HOA meetings,

The councilman is also advocating for more fiber-optic technology with local partners.

“It allows the private sector to accelerate and the public sector to utilize assets such as CPS (Energy) dark fiber. It will allow us as a community to be more embracing and to leverage power of technology to move the city forward,” he said. “We’re working with our private partners like Time Warner, AT&T and Google here to make sure they have infrastructure in place.”

San Antonio is now home to 8,000-10,000 foreign refugees, and most are living in District 8 near the Interstate 10 corridor or just west of the interstate, Nirenberg has previously said.

Nirenberg frequently volunteers with programs serving the refugee community and will participate in World Refugee Day June 20, including taking some to a Missions baseball game where he will throw out the first pitch.

The pair are being investigated in connection with some auto burglaries, according to Police Chief David Creed.

The chief said officers are also looking for links between the latest incident and a series of recent thefts on West Mossy Cup Street and Turkey Creek Road that targeted unlocked vehicles and tool sheds, but the men have not been directly tied to those cases.

Those episodes occurred in February, March and April.

“We’re very happy that we’ve taken these suspects into custody,” said City Manager Bill Hill. “We haven’t seen any other (vehicle

burglary) activities since (the arrests).” According to Bexar County Jail records,

Franklin David Henning, 24, and Scott Alan Cope, 25, have each been charged with four counts of burglary of a vehicle.

Bonds for each man totaled $10,000. Neither man lives in Shavano

Park, according to records.Police said the case began to unfold

shortly before 4:20 a.m. April 30 when Officer Jaime Villanueva saw a vehicle run

a stop sign at Bobcat Bend and Happy Trail. The patrolman pulled the auto over in the Bank of America parking lot on Northwest Military Highway, investigators said.

Villanueva spotted a large kitchen knife and other implements in the vehicle that could be used in a burglary, officials said. The officer also found a backpack with track shoes and headphones, several gift cards, a toolbox filled with tools, a mobile jump-start/air compressor combo, and a USAA checkbook belonging to a San Antonio resident, according to reports.

“It’s just good, solid police work,” Creed said. “The officer had no initial cognizance that there had been a crime committed. He was just acting on what he could see, which was a traffic violation done at an unusual time of the day. When he got them stopped, they (the occupants) couldn’t account for why they were in the area.”

Officers have stepped up their patrols in the city, the chief added.

It was just a couple of years ago that city officials decided to allow digital billboards — signs that electronically change their message and images, sometimes several times an hour — anywhere within Castle Hills’ boundaries.

The city has selected outdoor advertising giant Clear Channel to put up the billboards. The firm has its headquarters in San Antonio and is one of the world’s largest outdoor advertising corporations.

“We actually put out bids and had three companies that came to us, and out of those three we chose Clear Channel. We felt that

they would be the best suited for Castle Hills and would give us the most bang for our bucks,” Mayor Tim Howell said.

The bidding process was not all about money, Howell said. It was also about the reputation of the companies and the amount of time the companies have been in business.

All of the bidders offered a signing bonus that was about the same amount.

In a city newsletter, Howell said Clear Channel agreed to a $190,000 signing fee.

The two digital billboards could bring in at least $180,000 to $200,000 a year, depending on the advertising ability of Clear Channel. And since it is a multi-year contract, it could potentially turn into a multimillion-dollar deal, city leaders said.

The money brought in from the digital billboards is slated to go directly into repairing the city’s badly deteriorated streets and other infrastructure instead of the general fund.

Billboards are regulated by the state of Texas, and Castle Hills will follow those guidelines, including distance between the signs, sign height and other requirements, the mayor said.

The digital signs also will be regulated on brightness, size and the frequency with which the messages change.

Until the new rules were adopted a couple of years ago, the city had not made any changes to its restrictive sign ordinance since 1995 and limiting signage to pylons, fascia and one-per-year temporary banners.

The section of Castle Hills that includes the 410/West Avenue corridor is one of the busiest traffic areas in the Bexar County metropolitan area.

Advocates for signage have argued businesses located along Loop 410 and Blanco Road, just up from West Avenue, are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to trying to attract customers, since businesses on the San Antonio side of the freeway are not subjected to the same strict sign rules.

“As far as I’m concerned, I called it the black hole. We were the only section on

(Loop) 410 in the metropolitan area that didn’t have digital billboards,” Howell said.

The Digital Sign Committee members include Councilman Douglas Gregory, who serves as chairman; Councilman Frank Paul; City Manager Diane Pfeil; and Howell. The committee led the effort to get the digital billboards moving along and under contract.

At this time, no other digital billboards are scheduled to be put up in Castle Hills, but city leaders are contemplating a stretch of Northwest Military Highway as possibly the next part of town to get one, pending council approval.

After winning re-election May 9, Howell said he feels residents of Castle Hills are pleased with what the town’s leaders are doing — which is addressing the city’s infrastructure problems.

“And I, myself am not going to back off of it,” he added.

An estimated 600,000 American honeybees are living in an apiary on the roof of the hotel’s second story at Interstate 10 and Wurzbach Road, and the bees are pollinating a garden that produces the ingredients for many of the Omni’s restaurant’s recipes.

The colony also is an effort to preserve the bees, especially since an unexplained syndrome — Colony Collapse Disorder — is taking a worldwide toll on the insects, which scientists say are absolutely necessary to pollinate and propagate food plants.

“We thought this would be a really great way to accomplish a lot of symbiotic things that would help each other, finding

a spot to save these bees and have a place to call home, to nourish, (to) be helpful,” said Jeremy Lander, director of sales and marketing for the Omni.

The hotel has partnered with the nonprofit Central Texas Bee Rescue and Vertical Growing Systems to create a home where bees have plenty of food but also contribute to the Omni’s kitchen by producing honey and helping fruits, vegetables and herbs to grow.

The bees were relocated in early

November, with 10 hives and a total of 250,000 bees. Since then, the partners have introduced more hives for 600,000 bees.

Central Texas Bee Rescue founder and “Bee Czar” Walter Schumacher said the Omni has transformed the desert-like roof into a garden where bees rescued from San Antonio and Austin are thriving.

“That’s one of the reasons they stay happy. It’s because they come out and they don’t see a wasteland and say, ‘Oh, no food.’ They come out and say, ‘There’s

lots of food here,’” Schumacher said.Vertical Growing Systems created a

vertical garden for use by the hotel kitchens and also as a food source for the bees. The fruits, vegetables and herbs are planted upright, and as soon as their roots are strong enough, they are transplanted.

As the garden continues to develop, officials said the plants will be hooked up to a drip system that runs off condensation from the hotel’s air conditioning. It will be automated and use a solar pump to water itself.

Central Texas Bee Rescue is a part of the American Honey Bee Protection Agency.

Schumacher and his wife have been saving and rehabilitating bees for eight years.

“They forced me into it, they threatened to sting me if I didn’t,” Schumacher quipped.

He added that it usually takes 12 months to harvest honey at least twice, yet they have achieved twice as much in just six months. Judging by the honey output, Schumacher said the bees are adjusting well to their new home.

Guests of the Omni and patrons of Bolo’s Restaurant in the hotel can taste nature’s sweetener in many different dishes. In addition, the honey is infused in libations as part of the poolside menu “One Sweet Summer.”

Jars of honey are also for sale in the gift shop.

Don Fraser, the vice president of the Alamo Area Beekeepers Association, said he is impressed by the Omni’s initiative to rescue bees and provide them a new home.

“The Omni Colonnade is taking a leadership position in the business community, one that I hope will be emulated by others in the business community,” Fraser said. “It will help people recognize that rooftop beekeeping is a viable option.”

Fraser has been a beekeeper for eight years and developed a course called “Honey I’ve Got The Bees,” which he’s taught to hundreds of adults and children.

Honeybees are dying at an “alarming rate,” according to the Central Texas Bee Rescue website, honeybeekind.org. Schumacher said the hotel’s project excites him because, even though it’s

bees to care for the leftover immature bees and the queen. The shortages mean fewer crops are pollinated, leading to losses in the billions for farmers. Scientists are still trying to find a cause, though there are many theories, ranging from overuse of pesticides to fungi.

Lander added the hotel understands

the plight of the American honeybee, so bringing awareness to it is a priority.

During the past five years, more San Antonians and other South Texas residents have become cognizant of the need to save the honeybees, according to Fraser. His organization has received phone calls that have shown the change from wanting to kill bees to saving them as they dwindle.

“Honeybees are responsible for providing humans with one-third to one-half of our food supply. Many fruits, vegetables and nuts would disappear from our grocery shelves without the pollination provided by honeybees and other pollinators,” Fraser said.

Central Texas Bee Rescue checks on the Omni's bees at least once a week to make sure they’re happy and healthy.

The Omni Colonnade is one of five of the company’s hotels with a bee program.

“We wanted to start off locally. We wanted not only to be good stewards of our environment on a national level, but we wanted to do something that would (have a direct effect) in the community that we reside in, that gives so much to us,” Lander said.

The cafe, which opened Jan. 17, is the brick-and-mortar phase of a business venture launched in 2005 by owners Richard Giron and Ricardo Polendo, who were providing “all things nerdy” for conventions celebrating a unique style of animation and comics popular in Japan.

“When the genesis of this idea came about, we wanted to sell things, but we liked the cafe aspect because we’re nerds. We want to hang out with other nerds,” Giron said.

“Otaku” is the Japanese term for those excessively interested in something, or obsessed.

Instead of bringing pockets full of quarters, customers can spend $5 for two hours of game play, or $10 for an all-day pass. Giron is particularly proud the shop features Super Burger Boy, a game that, until now, was never imported Stateside.

“The selling point is the atmosphere.

You just come here and do almost whatever you want,” Polendo said. “You can chill, you can eat here, you can play cards, you can play anime ... We have someone working on their cosplay (costumes) — they brought their sewing machine.”

The name, menu and décor are part of a corporate re-think.

Anthony Spears, the hotel’s general manager, hopes longtime customers will be pleased with the renovation of the former Tex Sports Bar and Grill, but he also wants to attract new diners from area neighborhoods.

The soft opening took place in February and a grand-opening gala in April was very well received, he added.

“With the Asado Seafood & Grill,

not only did we want to be an amenity for our guests in the hotel, but we want to be another restaurant offering for local residents,” Spears said.

He said Asado is a new concept for Hilton properties.

“We have another Asado in Kansas City and one in California, and soon to be in Washington, D.C.,” Spears said. “Asado means roasted, grilled or broiled, and I refer to the new concept as ‘casual elegance.’”

“Everything is just melt-in-your-mouth,” he added. “The grilled salmon is served on a cedar plank with beurre blanc sauce. One of the most popular items is our tequila-cilantro shrimp. We also have chicken, lamb chops, filets, rib-eyes and some nice small bites like crispy calamari and crab fondue.”

He also wants visitors — especially locals — to take it easy in the Asado Lounge.

“Our Asado Lounge is a relaxing, cozy place where we’re hoping our local residents will come unwind after work, have a martini, visit with friends.
