since it was announced publicly that Noah Homes

was approved to break ground on two of the first memory care homes in the nation for people with developmental disabilities, $5 million has come to the project in the form of grants, donations and in-kind services from the San Diego community.

People with developmental disabilities are living longer and dealing with aging issues for the first time. As an added factor, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates more than 75 percent of those with Down syndrome aged 65 and older have Al-zheimer’s disease, nearly six times the percentage of people in this age group who do not have Down syndrome.

“Current end-of-life care op-tions, such as nursing homes and hospitals are not equipped to deal with the 800 or so adults with developmental disabilities in San Diego that are in need of memory care,” said Molly Nocon, CEO of Noah Homes. “Homelessness is not an answer just as much as a $500,000 hospital stay isn’t. In fact, this project is one of the first in the nation that provides a real, cost-effective, high quality answer.”

Noah Homes is a nonprofit in Spring Valley that has served the San Diego community for more than 30 years by provid-ing residential care, services and advocacy for adults with

Donations reach $5 million toward memory care homes for Adults with developmental disabilities

developmental disabilities and their families. There are more than 280,000 people in Cali-fornia with a developmental disability – 23,000 who reside in San Diego and hundreds in San Diego who are, or will soon be, in need of memory care.

With no state or national plan to follow, Noah turned to leaders in the community to develop the $6.7 million project, which will result in two of the first memory care homes in the nation for people with developmental disabilities being built in San Diego.

Many of the parents of adults with developmental disabilities are dealing with issues related to aging themselves, meaning at home care will no longer be an option. As an alternative, a semi-private nursing home can average $90,000 per year/per resident, while places like Noah Homes average $45,000 per year and are trained specifically to care for people with develop-

mental disabilities.

Peter Ferrantelli kicked off the campaign with a $1 mil-lion donation. Ferrantelli has a son who lives at Noah Homes and is a longtime supporter of philanthropic causes related to people with disabilities, educa-tion and children.

Kim Lauridsen-Jones, the sister of another resident at Noah Homes, soon matched Ferrantelli’s gift with another $1 million.

The McKinney Advisory Group then introduced Noah Homes to HomeAid San Di-ego, a nonprofit dedicated to building new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community out-reach. These partnerships flour-ished into more than $1 million in services and support from partners including Brookfield Homes, Dahlin Group, Murfey Construction and others.

Community: Phone Scam Alert

It ’ s a s tar t l ing phone call you could receive:

“There’s a warrant out for your arrest.” A scam going on right now in San Diego County hopes that fear will cause you to act without thinking.

These scams are currently telling victims that a warrant for their arrest has been issued due to a failure to pay taxes or to appear for jury duty, but may entail other false threats.

The caller is very pushy and poses as an employee of the Sheriff’s Department. To make the pitch very convincing, the scammer will:

• use the name of an ac-tual Sheriff’s Department em-ployee

• give the actual telephone number of a Sheriff’s Station or Substation

• have some of your per-sonal information such as a former address or your date of birth

• threaten you with jail time or taking away your driver license

• ask for more personal information

• ASK FOR MONEY either with a credit, debit or prepaid card

Recent cases have involved the scammers using a tech-nique called “Caller Spoofing.” What this means is the scam-mer will call their intended victim and make the incom-ing call appear to be coming from a legitimate government agency such as the Sheriff’s Department.

Impersonating a Sheriff ’s Deputy is a violation of state law. Remember, no deputy or employee of the Sheriff’s Department will ever contact members of the public by tele-phone to demand money or any other form of payment. If you get this type of call, hang up immediatly.

Since 2010, the Truth in Caller ID Act has prohibited caller ID spoofing with the in-tent to defraud or cause harm. If you receive one of these calls, go to the Federal Communi-cations Commission’s (FCC) website at www.fcc.gov/com-plaints to report the incident. If you are a victim of a scam, call the Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200.

For more information on warrants and bail notices and to check if you have an out-standing warrant in the County of San Diego, visit: http://goo.gl/J5N5g.

Senator Anderson

As one entered the front door of Cajon Valley

School Board Member Jo Alegria’s home last Thursday, the positive energy was tan-gible in the air. The room was filled with over 170 community residents, overflowing the main

room and out to the yard. Constituents grabbed a cup of coffee or a slice of delicious cake and settled in.

Once State Senator Joel Anderson stepped into the room, everyone’s eyes and attention were on him, as he welcomed the room to ask him questions.

“My top priority is making government work for my constitu-ents. That’s why I believe this series of community coffees are so important – it’s an opportunity for community members to ask their questions and share their ideas so that I can fight for them. My constituents ideas make me a better legislator. I’m also grateful to Cajon Valley Board member Jo Alegria for opening her home for this important event. Jo is an asset to our community and is an outstanding representative on her school board,” reflected Anderson on his community coffee.

The El Cajon Community Coffee was an opportunity for con-stituents to access their at a time that was convenient for them to attend. One of the attendees, Michael Sexton, said that the Com-munity Coffee’s environment was “personable and comfortable” especially since it was held at a home.

There was a wide range of ideas and issues that the community addressed. From taxes to water and education, Anderson answered with helpful information and offered to help all of his constituents with any problem they’re having with a state agency. For more information on upcoming events like Community Coffee, visit Anderson’s website at www.sen.ca.gov/anderson.

Lakeside Roundup

Dear Dr. Luauna — Freedom

Dear Readers,

It has been three weeks now, I’ve been teaching

on demons, fallen angels and the devil. At the same time, I’m teaching on Jesus’ power and His promises when we let go of all our idols. For three services, the Holy Spirit is setting the people free. God’s people are bringing in their idols and leav-ing them at the altar, repenting; finding freedom and deliver-

ance. Letting go of idols brings healing, freedom from confu-sion, and brings God’s blessings into our homes.

Before I came to Jesus, I didn’t even realize how I allowed demonic forces to enter into my life and home. Some of our old rituals seemed to be “OK,” after all; it’s in the family heritage. But not OK before a Holy God. Thank GOD, when salvation comes to a heart so does deliverance and freedom from allforms of idolatry.

We’re seeing a powerful move of God in Barrio Logan, right in the heart of San Diego. Last month 20 people were saved, and within 8 months of our pioneer church 90 people have come to Jesus. To God be all the glory!

I have also stirred up a few demons as well, we must always be prayed up, filled with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. The enemy of our soul hates when we have the well-being of the people at heart. San Diego belongs to JESUS for His inheritance, and I love when people find freedom. Acts 19:19; “Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.”

We’re to stand strong in the power of His might, no matter what comes our way. I wanted to share with you, soon you will be able to see our church services, via live streaming! I’ll let you know when. We’ll reach all of San Diego, all of the United States of America, and the world for Jesus!

I forgot to share about the young woman, so bound by meth and out of her mind, she was all dirty and in great need of a bath. She came into our Thrift Store; she had been selling her body on the streets earlier that morning. Still “fried out of her mind,” she came into the Thrift Store, looking for something to wear, yet she was so out of her mind she couldn’t see any-thing. She had a dingy, dirty, sweat shirt, it was a little long, but then we noticed she didn’t have any pants or undies on. She just stood at the register. We asked, “Honey, where are your pants?” But she was so lost and broken; she didn’t even know her pants were missing. We asked her to please come to church; we shared how she needed Jesus. A little tear came to her eyes, and then she turned and walked out the door. Stopping at the door, she asked, “Are you sure I can come to your church?” “Yes,” we said, “please come to church.” She turned and walked away.

I shared with Beverly, my assistant, “Grab a skirt, just in case she walks into church tonight.” I believe she will come in one day and find freedom and deliverance. Jesus is her hope, please pray for Mariana. She’s someone’s daughter and I ‘m sure some mom and dad have cried a million tears for their little girl.

God Bless you, and thank you for taking time out every week to read my column. A special thank you to Mr. Paul and Pamela, your story touched my heart deeply, because I am a Christian missionary to America. The song you sent, I listen to it every morning, and thank you for your gift.

I love you!

I n s p i r a t i o nDancing in the summer rain

by Dr. James L. Snyder

This is the time of the year when rain is an occasional warm visi-

tor, especially in the afternoon. It is then tempting to go outside and dance in the rain. One famous singer was so caught

up with a rainy afternoon that he did his famous, “Singing in the rain.” At my age, the only dancing I do is the bathroom shuffle, which has become more frequent than usual lately.

When it is raining, a friend of mine always says, “I guess we

needed the rain.” To me this does not make sense. Because it rains when we need the rain and then it rains when we have had enough rain. Or at least when I have had enough rain. My definition of enough rain is, when I have an afternoon outing planned.

Rain is a very important part of our social makeup. Without rain, much of what we do would simply dry up and blow away. Not only do we need rain for horticultural reasons, but for sociological reasons as well.

For example, we use rain to identify somebody who is not very smart, or at least not as smart as we think we are. We say of such a person, “He doesn’t know enough to get in out of the rain.”

Another example comes to mind. Some people will say, “I am saving up for a rainy day.” All I want to know is what a rainy day has to do with saving money. Nobody ever says, “I’m saving up for a snowy day.” Nor, does anybody ever say, “I’m saving up for a sunny day.” The latter would make more sense to me. There are plenty of sunny days that I could use plenty of money.

Perhaps the worst of all is the phrase, “Don’t rain on my Parade.” I have never really un-derstood this. No person who has ever said this to me was involved in a parade at the time.

Take last week for example. The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage was telling me about some plans she was putting together and I simply indicated that I did not think it was a good idea. I know when to keep my mouth shut; I just do not always do it.

With both hands on her hips, looking at me with one of “those looks,” she said to me in that familiar tone, “Don’t you dare rain on my Parade.”

At the time, I had no idea what parade she was talking about. If she was planning a parade, I wanted to be in on it. I love a parade. Furthermore, where did she get the idea that I could snap my finger and cause it to rain? I’m good, but not that good. Of course, who am I to argue with her?

The only thing I know for sure about rain is that God is in charge of it and he dispenses it at his good pleasure. Jesus said, “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:45 KJV).

I certainly cannot control the rain but I can thank God for His wisdom in sending the rain when He chooses.

In addition to construction partners, Noah Homes is col-laborating with UC San Diego Down Syndrome Center for Research and Treatment, the San Diego Regional Center and national advocacy groups to include state-of-the-art technol-ogy, access to national research, and opportunities for residents to participate in groundbreak-ing new techniques to fight Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other aging struggles.

“If you’ve ever been to a nursing home or a sub-acute facility, why can’t we do things differently? Because right now the only alternatives are those alternatives,” said Carlos Flores, Executive Director of the San

Diego Regional Center. “So I’m happily joining this journey with Molly because we need to do things differently and Noah Homes is certainly deserving of our support.”

With a solid backing, Noah Homes invited the community to participate in a fundraiser on its campus in June. The BBQ & Brewfest resulted in an ad-ditional $200,000 in proceeds, reaching the $5 million mark for the campaign.

Still in need of $1.7 million, Noah Homes hopes to begin construction this summer. For more information on the proj-ect, or to make a donation, visit www.noahhomes.org/memorycare.

El Monte Valley Sand Mining Project

It was standing room only on July 28 at the Lakeside

Christian Church on El Monte Rd., where citizens met to learn what is being proposed by a group called the El Monte Nature Preserve LTD for El Monte Valley.

The project is seeking to ex-tract approximately 10 million tons of processed material over a 15-year period, reclaiming the land as the resources are extracted from a 200 acre parcel.

El Monte Nature Preserve LTD submitted for review El Monte Sand Extraction and Habitat Restoration Project for plan review with the Lakeside Planning Group. The ‘Save El Monte Group’ addressed some of the issues of concern, natu-ral habitat, valley fever, daily truck trips, river park trail and exposed water after removal of the sand.

Those in favor of sand min-ing point out that without sand there is no concrete for building homes, foundations, swimming pools and drive-ways. Sand is being imported from out of the county, which increases costs, and some imported sand does not meet Caltrans specs.

Having won three straight series go-ing for a fourth, the

Friars opened up a long 10-game road trip in the ‘dog days of summer’ with four games at Milwaukee. The club continued their winning ways pounding the Brewers into submission with a 13-5 win Monday.

Exploding the ball with their bats, the Swinging Friars uti-lized the big stick of infielder Yangveris Solarte who went yard with two home runs, one from Gyorko, and three RBI from the ‘little Ninja’ Amarista pounding their way to victory. Solarte has been swinging a hot bat since Padres interim skipper Pat Murphy inserted the former Yankee slugger at third base where he appears comfortable both at the bag and plate.

Picking up the win, Padres ace Tyson Ross pitched six strong innings, picking up an RBI himself in the slugfest.

Having bought into the sys-tem of the Padres first year

Padres keep rollingGeneral Manager A.J. Preller. The young executive has not given up on this squad earn-ing the respect of his players, coaches, and fans. Staying pat on his roster, not succumbing to mediocre trade bait, the GM went against the grain of many who thought he would sell or trade away his talented nucleus of players before the July 31 trading deadline. The players are gelling as a cohesive unit, playing good baseball and getting hot in the second half of the season.

As of Tuesday in third place (52-54), six-back in the wild-card race, the team has gone 11-5 since the All Star break. The Friars are chasing the Gi-ants, Cubs, and National for that coveted second wild-card spot.

Coming home after the four-game set with the Brewers, the Friars host the Philadelphia Phillies at Petco. Throwback jerseys of former Padres short-stop Garry Templeton and former catcher Benito Santiago will be given-away at Satur-day’s game.

Review by James Colt Harrison

When someth ing goes bump in the night and makes

you jump right out of your seat, then to this reviewer it’s a thriller and chiller of the first order. Joel Edgerton may be a fledgling di-rector, but his new atmospheric mystery The Gift is a blend of drama, thriller, who-done-it, and a tantalizing “what’s going to happen next?” seat grabber.

Edgerton wrote the script and produced, so he had tight

control over the production. It was definitely his vision that hit the screen. The plot is fairly straight-forward. A young cou-ple move back to town and find a charming mid-century modern home in the hills of Los Angeles. Jason Bateman plays young, up-and-coming corporate executive Simon and his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) dabbles in interior design to keep occupied. They plan on having a family as soon as Simon’s job is settled.

We know nothing of Simon’s

past until a chance meeting with an old school mate brings up some puzzling questions. While out and about they have an encounter with Simon’s old friend Gordo (Joel Edgerton). Simon barely recognizes him and is unsettled by the encoun-ter. What would Gordo want with him after not seeing him for 20 years?

Without a doubt, Edgerton’s Gordo character is creepy and weird, a name that Simon gives him when Robyn questions just exactly who he is and what are his motives. Things get more mysterious when gift packages are left on their front doorstep for no reason.

Does Gordo have ulterior motives? Why is he so interest-ed in the couple? As the story evolves we see why Gordo is almost torturing the couple with kindness and gifts. Is he an axe murderer? Is he lust-ing after Robyn? Is he seeking revenge for something Simon might have done back in high school?

The audience is kept guess-ing and never knows what is coming next. Frequently Edgerton inserts frightening moments into the plot that are totally unexpected. It raises anxiety in the viewing audi-ence. Cleverly raising the audi-

ence’s tenseness, he makes it coincide with the agitation of Simon and Robyn. We feel like we are the victim of Gordo’s acts of evil kindness.

As Gordo, Edgerton embod-ies just enough sweetness of character to be suspect and just enough evil to be terrifying. He handles his Gordo character

effortlessly. As the writer of the story and script, he knows his “weird” Gordo well.

Edgerton steals the picture because his character is the most interesting of the three main parts. Don’t slight Bate-man or Hall as they are con-summate actors in their own right. Bateman is called upon

to be tender, aggressive, asser-tive at work, and just possibly infused with enough devil-ishness of his own to make the viewer beware. Hall, the progeny of famed American playwright Arthur Miller, has just enough moxie to easily become a take-charge lead-ing lady.

Review by Diana Saenger

Presumably most of us in America are addicts.

That would be addicts to sugar. For years there have been mov-ies, books, and advice about how sugar affects our bodies. Do we listen? Maybe for a day, a week or so, but then that ice cream cone, just one cookie, that grab a muffin on the run, controls us once again. One of the interesting things about Damon Gameau’s That Sugar Film is that it’s the hidden sugar in food that we fail to recognize and control.

“The hear t of this f i lm revolves around what hap-pened to my mind and body when I embarked on a high sugar diet for 60 days and fi lmed it,” Gameau said. “The diet consisted of 40 teaspoons of sugar a day

The story of sugar and its fears

found in our food and drinks, a figure just above the daily teenage average.”

Gameau achieved the 40 teaspoons without any soft drinks, ice cream, chocolate

or confectionery. He ate only foods that most people believe to be free of sugar and are often marketed as healthy. That included low fat yogurts, muesli bars, ‘healthy’ cereals,

Sycuan Rebranding …

along with Oscar-winning cine-matographer Russell Carpenter (1998, Best Cinematography, Titanic). The TV and print pieces feature actual Sycuan employees and several of the 50 charities that Sycuan supports.

Included in the video were cameos from San Diego icons such as Padres Playoff hero Steve Garvey, NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton, Charger Legend Billy Ray Smith, and Professional Wrestler Rey Mys-

terio Jr. The song in the TV spot, “One Minute More,” was provided by the high-energy band, Capital Cities.

“It’s about our relationships here with our customers, the community, and San Diego as a whole,” Dinius said. “We are going the extra mile to walk the walk here. From our newly re-launched Club Sycuan pro-gram that is the undisputed best in the market, to our huge new non-smoking area, we have listened to San Diego

and retooled the environment for our market.”

“The campaign itself is a slice of life in San Diego, fea-turing the close connection Sycuan Casino has to the community and, of course, the nonstop action that the gaming property offers.”

“Sycuan Casino is such a sincere brand, so authenticity and realism were important to us,” said Marketing Director Dan Morales. “From commu-nity efforts, to partnerships, to gaming, this spot is a true cross section of a day in the life of Sycuan and its employees. Throughout the campaign, these are real Sycuan Casino employees. They are veterans. They are volunteers. They are amazing people to interact with on the casino floor. It is so real, and we are so proud of that.”

Cody Martinez, Tribal Chair-man of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, took the podium and introduced the newly elected tribal council members in attendance; Vice Chairman Henry R. Murphy, Councilman Xusha Brown, Sr., and Councilman Joshua Muse.

“We are excited to support the casino management in this campaign as we continue to keep moving forward with a new chapter of Sycuan’s history,” Martinez said. “The Sycuan Band has always taken great pride in being a community partner. It’s one of the things that make us unique, and we’d like to continue to go down that road and offer not just an exciting gaming experience but continue to be a strong community partner.”

Looking back at the history of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Chairman Martinez reflected on the pride of the Band to always reach out and help others. The enor-mous amount of time, energy

and community involvement has been a huge part of the rebranding.

“This is a product of the management team,” Chairman Martinez said. “The council has

been fortunate enough to sup-port John and Dan Morales. The Sycuan Band has always been there for our community partners, and we appreciate all of those who support us and our endeavors.”

This was a courageous step for someone to take and one he wanted to do for his own discovery, but also because his first child was on its way and maybe he could make great changes for the way we eat food in the feature. Fortunately Gameau had a team of doctors and scientists monitoring his every turn. It’s said in the film that many scientists believe the reason people are growing sicker every day is because of fructose in so many items we eat that we don’t even know about.

On his journey Gameau often felt ill, found his fuse a lot shorter and eventually ended up seeing a doctor. Dr Ken Sikaris discovered Gameau

Continued from page 8 was getting a fatty liver which can become a serious problem. Several doctors and research-ers add comments throughout the film. Gameau travels to different countries, and compa-nies to learn more about sugar and how it affects our world.

That Sugar Film is by no means boring. The bottom line is well explained but includes elements of humor, bits of real life, shoppers, dancers, nice visuals, some very recogniz-able faces; and a real pleasant surprise that might make view-ers look twice at some of the opening scenes. Yup; it’s Hugh Jackman offering comments about this subject.

That Sugar Film is a film ev-eryone needs to see. It runs at the Digital Gym Theatre, 2921 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, through August 6.

“Hello, friends. My name is CURLY. I just went to the groomer, so I don’t have a lot of curls right now--just the few curls that crown my head. I’m a Mini Poodle/ Terrier mix, and I’m two-and-a-half years old. I’m a good-natured,

mellow fellow who gets along nicely with everyone, whether it’s a person or another dog, but I’m really looking for somebody who’ll let me snuggle in close. I’d appreciate a casual daily walk, but I’m not looking for big hikes or jogs. I’ve been quiet at the shelter, so I’d probably do well in an apartment. I’ve already been house trained, although I might need a quick refresher course when I get home. A little yard would be nice, since I like to sniff around and check things out when I’m outside. I’ve been dreaming about a forever home where I will be loved and adored. Please come visit me at the El Cajon Animal Shelter so we can get to know each other out in the play yard. Maybe you’ll see the love in my eyes, then you can take me home and make my dream come true. Love, Curly” Kennel #59
