A4 JUNE 22, 2020 EqUipmENtJoUrNal.com @EqUipJoUrNal

When it comes to the eco-nomic blow dealt by the coronavirus, few industries feel the pain as deep as hos-pitality.

Hoteliers say their indus-try began to collapse within hours of the pandemic dec-laration. For the hotels that remained open, occupancy rates fell below 10 per cent by the end of March. Across the industry, tens of thousands of people lost their jobs.

For restaurants, 10 per cent permanently closed by the end of March, and today, 60 per cent are operating at a loss.

In Kamloops, British Col-umbia, the hospitality sector is seeing an early reprieve from the damage done by COVID-19.

As construction begins on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, workers are arriv-ing to tackle the project. At the height of construction, up to 600 Trans Mountain employees will be based in the city, thanks to the pipe-line.

Kamloops Chamber of Commerce director Tyson Andrykew told the CBC that Trans Mountain employees will fill about 25 per cent of

the 2,500 hotel rooms in the municipality.

“They’re going to be here spending their hard-earned dollars at countless busi-nesses which is just a great opportunity for us, given the current climate,” Andrykew said, who is also a regional director with the Sandman Hotel Group.

“It should make a signifi-cant difference for some businesses for sure.”

It’s somewhat ironic that weeks before COVID-19 hit, Kamloops was host to pro-tests condemning pipeline expansion.

Irony aside, the construc-tion marks a key milestone for Trans Mountain. The 7-km section of the expan-sion in Kamloops is part of the plan to triple capacity for the flow of oil from Ed-monton to Burnaby, BC, from 300,000 barrels daily to 890,000 barrels.

The Trans Mountain ex-pansion project will cost an estimated $12.6 billion upon completion. In the Kamloops area alone, construction spending is expected to ex-ceed more than $450 million in the next two years. On top of that, more than $40 mil-

lion will be spent on labour in the area.

Construction, oil and hospitality are all import-ant pil lars of Canada’s economy. While many as-pects of the economy are currently moving at a crawl, the Trans Mountain pipeline construction becomes a bla-tant example of economic spin-off.

Yet, Canada’s pipelines are often a point of contention.

With few dollars flowing into communities, perhaps handing a dinner cheque or room keys to a Trans Moun-tain employee will help oil and gas opponents see how the industry is a benefit to society.

The Brandt Group of Companies will become Canada’s largest Geopositioning tech sup-plier, following an agreement with United States-based Ultara Holdings to acquire the assets of GeoShack Canada Company.

The deal, effective June 1, also includes the Canadian assets of Inteq Distributors, subject to due diligence.

The announcement is the latest in a series of acquisitions and dealer agreements by the Regina, Saskatchewan-based company, since their purchase of Nortrax in late 2019.

"We are very excited to add this highly respected team along with these key product lines and support services for our customers in Ontario and Quebec," said Brandt CEO Shaun Semple. "GeoShack and Inteq have built an impressive reputation over the years and we're looking forward to working with them to build on that strong foundation as we expand our commitment to those markets."

GeoShack is the exclusive supplier for Topcon Positioning Systems equipment in Ontario, providing sales, service and rentals of GPS, lasers and survey equipment for the construction, survey, engineering and agricultural industries.

The company also delivers comprehensive machine control solutions for all OEM con-struction and forestry equipment brands.

"The combination of the GeoShack team and Brandt's national infrastructure is going

to be powerful for Ontario customers," said GeoShack President Scott Beathard. "We've worked very hard to build strong relation-ships and a solid operation in the Ontario market over the years and we're completely confident that Brandt will continue to grow the business and provide unmatched value for clients in that market."

Brandt has also agreed to a separate agree-ment with Topcon Positioning Systems that gives the company distribution rights for the Quebec market and, alongside the GeoShack announcement, will make them the exclusive dealer for Topcon construction and geopo-sitioning products for all of Canada.

Inteq Distributors is a complementary business with a Canadian distribution centre in Exeter, Ontario that sells and services an extensive selection of construction instru-ments, optical equipment, survey supplies and accessories.

In combination with Brandt's pre-existing Topcon footprint in Western and Atlantic Canada, these additions will give Brandt a comprehensive retail footprint to supply geopositioning equipment to Canadian construction and forestry contractors, en-gineering firms and survey companies and will further establish the firm's position as a premier privately-held Canadian company.

The agreement is expected to close on June 26.

The Ontario government has created a new non-re-payable tool grant to help apprentices return to work.

The grant will help ap-prentices purchase tools, protective equipment and clothing for their trade, along with forgiving previous loans provided to purchase tools.

The announcement was made by Premier Doug Ford, Christine Elliott, Deputy Pre-mier and Minister of Health and Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

"The impact of COVID-19 has been devastating for many business owners, workers, and families, and that's why we are doing everything we can to help people through this difficult period," Ford said.

"Hospitality workers and our skilled tradespeople have been among those hardest

hit by this pandemic. These new programs will ensure they're ready to get back on the job and play an important role in our economic recov-ery."

The Ontario Tools Grant will provide $2.5 million in 2020-21 and $7.5 million in 2021-22 and ongoing.

The grant will provide $600 for those in construc-tion and industrial sector trades, $1,000 for motive power apprentices and $400 for in-service trades.

To be eligible for the new grant, apprentices must have completed Level 1 training on or after April 1, 2020; be in an active registered training agreement; and have been registered as an apprentice for at least 12 months.

The government is also for-giving more than $10 million in outstanding loans owed by apprentices for tool purchas-

es made at the beginning of their careers.

The Loans for Tools Pro-gram allowed thousands of new apprentices to buy tools, equipment, clothing, manu-als and code books required for their trade.

About 19,000 apprentices who participated in the pro-gram owed, on average, $495, according to the government.

"If we are going to rebuild our economy, we must reach out and help the workers and businesses that are suffering as a result of COVID-19," Mc-Naughton said.

"The programs that we are announcing today will leave more money in the pock-ets of our apprentices and support those hospitality workers who have been laid-off by providing access to the training and services they need to recover and rejoin the workforce."

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas is con-tinuing to expand develop-ment of electric-powered construction equipment, and recently debuted a prototype of a compact elec-tric excavator.

Hyundai showcased the prototype of the Hyundai R18E electric-powered com-pact excavator, which the company developed exclu-sively in-house.

The Hyundai R18E is a two-ton-class machine de-signed for use both indoors and in urban settings. Offer-ing power and productivity equivalent to the Hyundai’s diesel-powered R17Z-9A compact excavator, the R18E is 60 per cent more energy efficient.

“Through our own resour-ces, and in collaboration with a global industry lead-er like Cummins, Hyundai demonstrates a commit-ment to meet the growing demand for electric-powered compact excavators,” said Stan Park, vice president of distribution and marketing for Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas.

Quiet performanceElectric-powered compact

excavators offer a variety of benefits, including zero

carbon emissions and quiet operations.

“One of the key features of a machine like this is the quietness. It goes from 5 decibels to 75 decibels,” said Tito Sosa, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas senior product specialist.

With an operating weight of 1,725 kg, digging depth of 2.4 metres and dump height of 268 cm, the R18E is pow-ered by an induction-type motor, with a one-hour cur-rent rating of 225 amps.

Digital control of the elec-tric excavator is provided through a microcontroller. The machine can operate up to eight hours on a full charge and can be fully re-charged in five hours.

The Hyundai-developed

excavator uses a LFP type Li-ION battery, generating a power capacity of 19.6 hp. Its battery charger is rated at 4 hp, with a free voltage range of 100-230 volts AC.

The 2-ton electric excav-ator is expected to launch sometime in 2022.

Cummins collaborationHyundai has also part-

nered with Cummins to create a 3.5-ton electric ex-cavator.

“Through our collabora-tion with Cummins, we have produced an excavator in the highly popular 3.5-ton size class,” Park said. “We expect this machine to be well re-ceived not only in the rental market, but in municipalities focused on green initiatives, in urban construction where

machine noise can be an issue and in applications that are exposed to fire hazards.”

Powered by Cummins BM4.4E flexible battery modules, which generates 5.9 hp each, the Hyundai R35E excavator prototype is designed to support a full work shift and charge in less than three hours.

The machine eliminates all emissions and substan-tially reduces noise, making it ideal for use in urban and suburban construction.

The excavator contains eight BM4.4E modules connected in a series con-figuration to provide a total energy of 47 hp.

Mounted near the base of the electric excavator, the Cummins-designed and -built battery modules use

lithium-ion technology to achieve a higher energy density and proprietary con-trol technology to maintain the battery state-of-charge

for a longer zero emission range.

The modular design also allows for scalability to other applications and duty cycles.

Metso is introducing the new Nordberg HP900 Series cone crusher for the mining and aggregate markets.

Since 1989, Metso has in-stalled more than 10,000 of its HP cone crushers around the world.

Now, the Nordberg HP900 makes its debut, and is built to bring increased perform-ance and reduced capital expenditures (CAPEX).

The new cone crusher is an upgrade to the well-known HP800 cone crusher that has more than 175 installations. About 80 per cent of the parts are compatible between the

two versions of the crusher. The HP900 comes with im-

proved kinematics, raised pivot point and power in-crease which leads to a 15 per cent capacity increase. A new lubrication system is also included to help support the new performance level.

“Often copied, but never matched, HP cone crushers have satisfied many aggre-gates and mining customers around the world. With the HP900 we go straight to the point, with increased performance and reduced CAPEX,” said Jim Bathie, vice president of mining crush-

ers at Metso. The HP900 is delivered pre-assembled, pre-wired and factory tested.

The equipment is pack-aged with a rubber-pad mounted subframe and guards, allowing quick and safe setup with a compact footprint. These features help to reduce installation time by about 50 per cent.

As well, thanks to the prov-en and reliable tramp-release system, the new crusher al-lows passage of tramp iron minimizing production stop-pages and protecting internal components.

Top service access to the

head, shaft, eccentric and other major components make disassembly easy. Furthermore, Metso wear parts can be replaced up to four times faster than similar cone crushers, according to the company.

The crusher is equipped with Metso's IC70C auto-mation system to ensure optimum operating par-ameters enabling the full potential.

The IC70C is designed to be easy and simple to use.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Terex is resuming production at all of its production facilities in Northern Ireland.

In May, the company an-nounced its sites in Omagh, Dungannon, Campsie and Ballymoney are resuming production at a reduced capacity.

The company’s decision follows the Department for the Economy’s recent pub-lication of a list of priority business sectors that need to continue to operate during

the pandemic in the UK.“Our primary focus during

the COVID-19 pandemic is to ensure that we look after the health, safety and well-being of our workforce, and to do all that we reason-ably can to protect our team members while at work,” the company said in a news release. “Our employees’ health and well-being is at the centre of our oper-ations, and in order to keep our returning employees and workplace safe from the virus we have implemented

comprehensive safety meas-ures in line with government guidance and Terex best practice.”

With production resum-ing, Terex plans to introduce three compulsory enhanced measures to help protect the health and safety of its team members and others who may need to come to our sites.

The health and safety measures include:

1. COVID-19 health check self-assessment utiliz-ing the Health and Social

Care Application and no-touch temperature screenings to screen for high temperatures and avoid having sick people enter the facilities.

2. Face coverings will now be mandatory for close working and face-to-face conversations.

3. Social distancing meas-ures across the sites.

These measures also ex-tend to visitors at Terex sites, and visitors will be on an essential basis only.

John Deere has introduced a new factory-installed Premium Circle option for its G-Series, GP-Series and SmartGrade motor graders.

The new option features a fully sealed bearing and pinion design, which re-duces maintenance costs and downtime, while also significantly boosting circle torque and speed.

“To be profitable, cus-tomers constantly work to balance ever-tightening margins with increasing expenses,” said Luke Kurth, motor grader product mar-keting manager for John Deere Construction and Forestry.

“John Deere is focused on providing new ways to help reduce those costs, and we are able to do that with the new Premium Circle op-tion for all G- and GP-series motor graders worldwide.

By eliminating the circle wear inserts and need for adjustment or replacement, customers will benefit from reduced parts and labour costs, while still maintaining an accurate grade.”

With traditional circle de-signs, customers may spend hours in the shop replacing or shimming the wear inserts,

which takes the machine off the jobsite.

Over the lifetime of the ma-chine, downtime adds up, but is necessary to maintain tightness for accuracy and prevent damage to the circle.

The Premium Circle option replaces wear inserts with a sealed bearing that only requires a few minutes to

grease every 500 hours. As well, the gearbox oil change intervals have been extended from 2,000 to 4,000 hours, while the pinion and circle teeth are completely sealed from dirt and debris to mini-mize wear.

The new Premium Circle with integrated slip clutch has significant effects on machine

productivity as well. With the Premium Circle, John Deere motor graders boast 40 per cent more circle torque and 15 per cent more speed over the standard circle.

Contractors will also see improved performance and accuracy when using a grade control system by no longer having to compensate for

wear in the circle, according to Deere. This is especially impactful when coupled with the John Deere SmartGrade system. The same grader can now be used from initial site clearing to final grade with-out stopping to install masts or downing the machine to adjust for looseness in the circle.

As construction activity returns to normal in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, health and safety is the top priority for contractors in the Indus-trial, Commercial and Insti-tutional (ICI) sector.

Between May 11 and May 15, the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) compiled the Coronavirus Contractor Survey 2: Restart & Recov-ery. The OCS surveyed 203 Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) contract-ors from across the province for input.

This survey was created to provide insight on how the construction indus-try is restarting, as well as recovering, from the cor-onavirus pandemic.

About 31 per cent believe it will be highly difficult or impossible to ensure work sites are adequately sani-tized and 83 per cent of contractors expect work-site sanitation practices will permanently change.

As well, other promin-ent concerns include the impact physical distancing has on productivity and pro-ject costs, the availability of

work, whether it be general demand and investment in construction, or quick approval of shovel-ready projects and quick rollout of government infrastructure spending.

With new measures in place to keep health and safety at the forefront, con-tractors now must consider the impact it will have on costs and productivity. On average, contractors expect PPE and physical distancing requirements to increase project costs by 28 per cent, while 39 per cent expect physical distancing to have a high impact on project completion times.

Health and safetyContractors have imple-

mented various measures to protect their workers and ensure worksite health and safety. These actions include establishing contact tracing procedures (71 per cent), having only one trade or subcontractor on site a given time (67 per cent), using technologies to manage the number of workers on site at a given time (48 per cent) and checking temperatures

of workers (42 per cent). The survey also found that

nearly three-quarters (73 per cent) of firms expect less revenue in 2020 than last year and on average, annual revenue is expected to decline by 26 per cent.

About 17 per cent of con-tractors have doubts that they will be able to survive over the long term and 9 per cent of firms are considering mergers or acquisitions to stay alive.

Ready to workFirms are ready to work

as 86 per cent of them have capacity to take on new s h ove l - re a d y p ro j e c t s ; however, 35 per cent of con-tractors expect it to take at least six months to get back to business-as-usual and 9 per cent don’t believe they will ever get there.

Supply chain disruptions persists with more than 60 per cent of contractors still reporting the corona-virus pandemic is causing medium to high impact, leaving 62 per cent of con-tractors planning to source more material locally or do-mestically.

Health and safety is top concern for Ontario’s ICI contractors

Bobcat Company has debuted four all-new, 60 frame size vertical lift path loaders to its R-Series lineup.

The new machines include the Bobcat R-Series T64 and T66 compact track loaders and S64 and S66 skid-steer loaders.

These new loaders will join the T76 compact track loaders and S76 skid-steer loaders that were introduced in February. The T64 and S64 offer 68 horsepower and 1,043 kg rated operating capacity. The T66 and S66 models offer 74 horsepower and 1,111 kg and 1,088 kg rated operating capacity, respectively.

While maintaining a compact frame, the new Bobcat R-Series loaders have upgraded performance with greater lift capacities and higher lift heights than their M- and M2-Series predecessors.

Increased lift capabilitiesFrom a heavy bucketful of material to a truck

filled with hefty pallets, the ability to lift more and carry more provides a true measure of loader productivity.

R-Series 60 frame-size loaders are equipped with redesigned lift arms featuring cast-steel segments for increased strength and lifting capability. The R-Series lift arms are stronger in key areas, yet slimmer to ensure optimal performance and increased visibility. The lift arms, combined with the optimized lift arm linkage, ensure that operators can handle more challenging jobs with greater confi-dence and ease.

Improved cooling systemAs operators require compact equipment

to run longer and do bigger, more difficult jobs, better cooling is essential.

Key R-Series cooling system improvements include a larger, higher-capacity radiator; a fan size that has increased by about 50 per cent, which achieves more cooling at a slower rotation; and a tailgate with heavy-duty steel louvers that allow optimal airflow while still providing a frontline defense against debris.

R-Series cabR-Series loaders bring more comfort to

challenging jobs with more visibility, com-fortable controls, numerous options and roomy environment.

A new, clear-side enclosure option reduces steel mesh screens from the side windows, allowing operators to have a clear view to the sides of the machine to help manoeuvre confidently.

Futhermore, the arm linkage has been repositioned to the rear of the machine, al-lowing the best possible view to the wheels or tracks. R-Series loaders come standard with front and rear LED lights for far-reaching visibility in low-light situations.

Furthermore, operators are able to also upgrade to optional premium LED lights that wrap around the cab’s upper corners or add side LED lights to illuminate more of the jobsite.

R-Series 60 frame-size loaders come rear-camera ready; the rear camera integrates seamlessly with in-cab displays to provide an on-demand, automatic or continuous rear view.

Sealed and pressurized cabThe new one-piece, sealed and pressurized

cab design provides a near-seamless interior for a new level of operator comfort and im-proved service access.

The roomier design offers a sealed and pressurized environment that repels dust and dirt in the cab, isolates the operator from engine and hydraulic noise and enhances the efficiency of heating and air conditioning. When it’s time for maintenance or repairs, the entire R-Series cab rotates out of the way to provide improved service access – with hardware on the cab exterior for easy removal.

As well, the 60 frame-size compact track loaders now include the patented Bobcat 5-Link torsion suspension undercarriage.

without a diesel particulate filter (DPF), reducing down-

time that occurs with DPF regeneration and long-term DPF maintenance costs.

Bobcat engines feature a robust combustion chamber that handles more pressure and produces more torque, delivering better performance for pushing, digging, lifting and operating attachments.

Cast-steel attachment mounting A new cast-steel Bob-Tach attachment mounting system

provides a stronger connection point with more metal where

it’s needed. It has fewer welds overall, plus openings that allow dirt and debris to pass through. Additional features include:

· Standard 12.7 cm display or optional 18 cm display with Bluetooth.

· Eye-level push-button controls.

· Protected battery with remote jumpstart.

· A new, larger fuel filter enabling better system protection and longer filter life.

Atlas Copco Power Tech-nique has developed the new XAS 188, a single-stage oil-injected rotary screw type air compressor.

The XAS 188 is powered by a Kubota Tier 4 Final, li-quid-cooled, three-cylinder diesel engine.

Delivering 189 cfm at 9 litres per hour, a 102 litre fuel tank is adequately sized to operate the XAS 188 for more than 11 hours at full-load.

The diesel engine offers an output of 49.6 hp at a rated speed of 2,700 rpm. The en-gine starts the compressor at -10 C with a standard glow-plug or a cold start option starts the machine at -25 C.

As well, a newly designed air end element includes a gear box, which demands less power from the engine, while at the same time de-livering more air flow. This results in less fuel consump-tion and more productivity on the job.

The air compressor is also built with longer service intervals at 1,500 hours or two years when using syn-thetic compressor oil. This is in addition to a new spin-on compressor oil separator, which simplifies mainten-ance to less than an hour of service with no special tools required.

The HardHat heavy double polyethylene shell opens at 60 degrees to allow the oper-ator easy access to service all internal components.

The HardHat canopy is also noise dampening, and dent and UV resistant, keep-

ing the compressor looking new and maximizing the value of the machine. It is also equipped with a large internal toolbox with room to store a 40-kg hammer inside the machine.

A new, us er- fr iendly Xc1004 controller regulates the entire machine. This in-cludes a battery disconnect to prevent the battery from power loss when the XAS 188 is not in use.

It also features a number of safety warnings and shut-downs for high temperature engine coolant and compres-sor oil, engine oil pressure and low fuel level.

The large 9 cm display on the controller is easy to operate with all functions conveniently located at the operator’s fingertips. The panel displays hours, fuel level and outlet pressure, in addition to rpm, machine temperature and voltage.

Transporting the air com-pressor is easy with the XAS 188’s heavy-duty single axle, 38 cm tires and external lift-ing eye, which allows for easy access in getting the unit on and off the jobsite.

Environmentally friendly,

the air compressor includes a 110 per cent spillage-free containment frame to pro-tect from spills and leaks, avoiding costly clean up.

The Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL) system is now fully operational.

As the world’s newest large-scale carbon capture, utilization and storage fa-cility, the system is built to safely transport and perma-nently store carbon dioxide.

The Alberta Carbon Trunk Line will shift how carbon is managed in the province. The system captures indus-trial emissions and delivers the CO2 to mature oil and gas reservoirs in Central Al-berta for use in enhanced oil recovery and permanent storage.

The current supply of car-

bon dioxide is captured at the North West Redwater Partnership (NWR) Stur-geon Refinery and Nutrien’s Redwater Fertilizer Facility, offering a sustainable emis-sions solution for energy and agriculture sectors.

“The Sturgeon Refinery made a bold decision over 15 years ago to incorporate carbon capture into its de-sign,” said Kerry Margetts, president of the NWR Stur-geon Refinery.

“Our founders believed then, as we are proving today, that carbon capture was our environmental competitive advantage to producing a low carbon in-tensity diesel from Alberta’s bitumen resources.”

After the carbon dioxide is captured, it travels down a 240-km pipeline, which is owned by Wolf Midstream, to a storage reservoir owned by Enhance Energy.

“This is just the beginning,” said Jeff Pearson, president of Wolf Midstream’s carbon business unit.

“This critical piece of infrastructure supports sig-nificant future emissions solutions, new utilization pathways and innovation in the carbon capture space. The future of energy and a lower carbon economy relies on key infrastructure like the ACTL.”

The Alberta Carbon Trunk Line is world’s largest cap-acity pipeline for carbon dioxide from human activ-ity, capable of transporting

up to 14.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year. This repre-sents about 20 per cent of all current oil sands emissions, or the equivalent of captur-ing the carbon dioxide from more than 2.6 million cars in Alberta. Designed with excess capacity, the system will connect more facilities and storage reservoirs in the future as demand increases for an effective solution to manage emissions.

Not only does the ACTL system remove greenhouse gas from the atmosphere and decrease Canada’s car-bon footprint, it uses the captured carbon dioxide to revitalize a light oil industry. Once the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line transports the carbon dioxide to mature oil fields in Central Alberta, the CO2 is used for enhanced oil recovery before permanent storage.

“This will change how business is done in Alberta,” said Kevin Jabusch, CEO of Enhance Energy, which is injecting CO2 from the ACTL into oil fields near Clive, Alberta.

“We are putting CO2 to use. We permanently keep CO2 out of the environment, while producing low-carbon energy.

“Not only are we reinvig-orating our rural energy economy at a time when it is needed most, but we are playing a key role in advan-cing a sustainable solution to global energy require-ments.”

The leaders of Canada’s cement and concrete industries have issued a joint declaration calling on the federal government to prioritize construction and strategic infrastructure spending.

Economic boostPrioritizing funding, ac-

cording to the letter, would help boost Canada's eco-nomic recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration is out-lined in a letter to Prime Minster Justin Trudeau, as well as several federal min-isters.

A s w el l , the let ter is signed by executives from the Cement Association of Canada, St Marys Cement, Lafarge Canada, CRH Can-ada Group, Lehigh Hanson Materials Canada and McIn-nis Cement.

"A successful econom-ic recovery will require a c o m m i t m e n t t o u s e time-sensitive infrastructure spending," said Michael McSweeney, president and CEO of the Cement Associ-ation of Canada (CAC).

"We have a very short con-struction season in Canada and municipalities have lost much of their financial capacity to fund important infrastructure projects this year. We need the federal government to help munici-palities get local community infrastructure projects going to boost economic activity and public confidence."

7-point planThe industry's seven-point

declaration entitled Build-ing a Successful Economic Recovery in Canada was developed to help shape the federal government's

Covid-19 recovery plan.

Municipal disadvantageIt highlights the weakened

financial state of Canada's municipalities and the need for the government to ab-sorb a greater share of the cost of infrastructure pro-jects.

The 7-point declaration calls on the federal govern-ment to:

1. Put the construction sector at the core of the Covid-19 Economic Re-covery Plan.

2. Prioritize large-scale infrastructure projects.

3. De-risk provincial and municipal projects by ensuring federal dollars are first into projects.

4. Boost investment in municipal State of Good Repair (SOGR) projects.

5. Optimize existing infra-structure programs that already have approved projects and funding.

6. Accelerate the transfer of historic levels of funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan.

7. Invest in climate action a n d t h e c o n t i n u e d d e c a r b o n i z a t i o n o f energy-intensive indus-tries, such as cement.

In 2019, the building ma-terials and construction industries contributed $157 billion in economic activity representing 7.9 per cent of Canada's overall GDP.

"The cement and concrete industry is responsible for the employment of over 158,000 Canadians and annual economic activity in excess of $76 billion," McSweeney said.

"Our products are local and are produced in vir-

tually every community across the country. We are in a great position to give Canada's economy an eco-nomic boost and help carry on the good work of building a more resilient country."

Who is the CAC?The Cement Association

of Canada (CAC) is the voice of Canada's cement manu-facturers.

The industry provides the reliable, domestic supply of cement required to build Canada's communities and critical infrastructure and is committed to the en-vironmentally responsible manufacturing of cement and concrete products.

The next-generation SK140SRLC-7, with a 14.9-tonne operating weight, is a mid-sized machine that offers full-size benefits with short rear swing capabilities.

Kobelco equipped the excavator with various performance enhancements to allow the SK140SRLC-7 to deliver great-er efficiency and productivity as well as increased power and speed, compared to its predecessor.

The upgraded excavator boasts a digging force of 11,249 kg, while a compact design and long digging reach capabilities provide a broad working range and manoeuvrability. The SK140SRLC-7 achieves a maximum digging depth of 6 metres and a swing speed of 11 rpm, which shortens cycle times by about 10 per cent.

Tier 4 Final engineEquipped with a new Tier 4 Final engine

that increases power output by about 10 per cent, the SK140SRLC-7 maintains su-perior productivity and efficiency, even while working at high power levels or lifting heavy loads.

The excavator’s strong drawbar pulling force produces powerful travel capabilities, enabling it to tackle steep and rough terrain. As well, independent travel, an exclusive Kobelco feature, allows the SK140SRLC-7 to move, lift and swing simultaneously without experiencing loss of power.

Enhanced multi-function capabilities include an attachment selection system with adjustable flow-rate presets for the bucket,

breaker, nibbler and thumb, allowing the operator to change between tools quickly. The SK140SRLC-7 is also available with an optional offset boom, which increases stability and manoeuvrability while working in confined areas, such as next to walls or close to traffic.

In the Kobelco cabWhen it comes to comfort, the SK140S-

RLC-7 offers intuitive operation and comprehensive safety.

The Kobelco machine comes standard with an ergonomic lever and Grammer air ride suspension seat to reduce operating force and fatigue.

The SK140SRLC-7 also includes various cab features, including an optimized con-trol layout with a new jog dial and 25-cm colour monitor.

An unfastened seatbelt indicator, and built-in rear, left and right-side cameras with a customizable split-screen display function enhance operator awareness and jobsite safety.

SK140SRLC-7 maintenance Maintenance on the SK140SRLC-7 is easy

and cost-efficient, according to Kobelco. Remote diagnostic and preventive mainten-ance systems utilize the latest IT innovations to improve operating product lifecycle costs. Easy access to maintenance data from the operation management system improves ease of maintenance scheduling and en-sures a long service life.

Operators can also expect extended ser-vice intervals when it comes to engine oil, hydraulic oil, filter changes and greasing.

Kobelco debuts enhanced SK140SRLC-7 excavator in North America

A trio of heavy equipment dealers in Canada have made Doosan Infracore North America’s list of its top-per-forming dealers of 2019.

Each year, Doosan recog-nizes its dealers that have demonstrated high quality customer service by providing sales, parts and service to their customers. Annual dealer performance reviews are also a factor in the dealer’s score.

The three Canadian com-panies making the list include Bobcat of Hamilton in Hamil-ton, Ontario; CG Equipment in Guelph, Ontario; and Eastrock Inc in Ottawa On-tario.

The Canadian dealers are joined on the list by Barry Equipment Co. (Webster, Massachusetts); Best Line Leasing, Inc. (Allentown, Pennsylvania); Bobcat of Mandan Inc. (Mandan, North Dakota); Coastal Machinery (Pensacola, Flor-ida); Equipment East, LLC (Dracut, Massachusetts); Equipment Rentals, Inc. (Watertown, New York); and Wilson BC Companies, LLC (Central Point, Oregon).

“Our top Doosan deal-ers set the bar for the entire dealer organization,” said Todd Roecker, Doosan dir-ector of dealer management

and marketing. “To achieve this recognition, these top-performing Doosan dealers performed at high levels in terms of sales, parts and service capabilities, in their respective markets.”

Top-performing Doosan dealers are offered a selec-tion of several incentives that they may choose from, which will improve their profitability and focus with Doosan.

In addition, these deal-ers are often looked upon as leaders in the Doosan dealer network being the voice for future direction and initiatives.

Cat Certified Rebuild: 2 machines in 1By Josephine Zalba and Chris Meilenner at Toromont Cat

Caterpillar machines have long stood the test of time. Although they have evolved over the past century, they have always been known as long-life machines that are “built to be rebuilt.”

The machines are de-signed with the goal of extending their lifespan and maximizing their value.

When it comes time to breathe new life into your machine, its design makes

revitalization easy. It is thanks to this particu-

lar characteristic that our Cat Certified Rebuild pro-gram allows us to not only transform a used machine into a like-new one, at the fraction of the price of a new machine, but also include a new warranty to provide long-term peace of mind.

At Toromont Cat, the terms “expert support” and “collab-orative problem-solving” are more than just catch phras-es. Our team of Cat-trained technicians prides itself on its ability to rebuild your Cat machine, whether it is done partially, through a Cat Cer-tified Powertrain Rebuild, or completely, through a Cat Certified Rebuild.

However, it is our commit-ment to problem-solving and continuous and personal-ized after-sales services and support that distinguishes us from the rest.

We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why, through high-quality service, reliable communica-tion and flexible after-sales solutions, we are able to adapt to your needs and tailor our services to fit your business’ objectives, budget and schedule.

Rebuild process

The Cat Certified Rebuild process is very thorough and involves many steps, including the inspection, disassembling, recondi-tioning and testing of your machine to rigorous Cater-pillar specifications and standards.

The process involves the replacement of up to 7,000 parts, and since reliability is key for us, we only use genu-ine or remanufactured Cat parts from start to finish.

Our team will not only recondition your machine, but also include the latest engineering and technology in order to attain maximum performance.

We also offer the oppor-tunity to add specific parts,

systems or components to further boost productivity and reliability.

On top of that, to ensure the quality and performance of your rebuilt machine, we will perform more than 350 rigorous tests and in-spections as the rebuild progresses. The result is a like-new machine that matches the latest model updates and leads to higher profitability.

Throughout this whole process, from quotation to the final product, our team of experts is in constant com-munication with you. During the rebuild, you will be able to see the parts and com-ponents that are used, and obtain clear, transparent and reliable information from our team.

We will take the time to explain why we recom-mend certain modifications and the impact that each improvement will have on your machine and its per-formance, as well as keep you updated on the status of the rebuild. And our support doesn’t stop at delivery.

Extended coverageTo further maximize the

value of your Cat Certified Rebuild, we have a number of offerings that will support your machine once you put it back to work. We offer ex-tended warranty coverage of up to 10,000-hours, remote connectivity services to keep track of your machine’s lo-cation and condition, and Customer Value Agreements (CVAs) to provide main-tenance parts and service support tailored to your operating needs.

At Toromont Cat, your suc-cess is important to us. That is why we are always here to help you reach your goals as easily and as quickly as possible.

We do not simply rebuild your machine, we offer you long-term solutions to maximize a long-term in-vestment.

Kenzen develops body heat sensor for predictive worker safety

Smart PPE developer Kenzen has launched a wearable real-time worker heat monitoring system.

The cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) system includes a wearable device worn by workers on their arm, which alerts both the worker and their supervisor when core body temperature is too high.

Real-time alerts allow for immediate inter-vention and worker safety from heat injuries.

The wearable tech, via its advanced sensor, monitors multiple physiological and environ-mental metrics, including heart rate, activity, skin and ambient temperatures. The sensor data allows for the real-time prediction of core body temperature, providing alerts to workers and supervisors when temperatures approach unsafe levels.

“The Kenzen system is all about prediction and prevention. Heat related injuries are 100 per cent preventable, but potentially deadly and difficult to detect until it’s too late,” said Heidi Lehmann, Kenzen’s chief commercialization officer.

Kenzen’s multi-level alerts are sent to workers via device vibration, iOS or Android app notification and to supervisors via web dashboard alert signalling the worker should take a break and to allow their temperature to return to safe levels.

Alerts are accompanied by actionable rec-ommendations such as advising the worker to take a break, find shade, drink water or remove any excess clothing and equipment to decrease body heat.

When the worker’s core body temperature

has returned to a safe level, a second “back to work” alert notifies the employee.

Data captured by the system can be used to help companies identify heat risk and manage outcomes by adapting worksites accordingly to improve worker safety while maximizing productivity.

Modifications may include changes to work-rest schedules, where and when to add water and shade stations, the addi-tion of air-conditioned rest areas and even recommendations for pre-staging ice-bath locations in case of extreme weather and working conditions.

The data can also inform decisions around workplace expenditures such as certain equipment and clothing.

The Kenzen system has been tested on worksites of large industrial conglomerates across the globe in domains such as con-struction, field services, power, oil and gas as well as renewable energy. In the future, open APIs will allow integration into large connected-worker platforms. Kenzen also expects to receive Intrinsic Safety (IS) cer-tification for use of its system, a perquisite for use in many oil and gas, mining and other enclosed environments later this year.

Once approved, the system would be among the first smart PPE products to receive Zone 0 IS certification, which authorizes safe operation of electrical equipment in hazard-ous areas where any thermal or electrical malfunction is catastrophic.

Kenzen is sold as a subscription on a per-worker, per-month basis.

A22 JUNE 22, 2020 EqUipmENtJoUrNal.com @EqUipJoUrNal

As the COVID-19 curve flattens, and construction activity resumes, every company will have its own unique response as to how they ensure employees are safe on the jobsite.

Keith P. Burkhardt, a lawyer with Sherrard Kuzz LLP, Employment & Labour Lawyers, explained what’s regulat-ed and what’s considered a best practice for construction companies in the wake of the pandemic, during a webinar hosted by the Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA).

“We’re encouraging employers to be the best employ-er out there and to be a leader in their field,” Burkhardt said, who is a member of ORBA as well as several other construction-related associations. “Understand, as well, you shouldn’t feel like you’re being pushed around, and it is your choice to follow best practices, not a legal re-quirement.”

What’s requiredUnder the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers

have general duties for construction work sites. They are required to provide sanitation facilities and a reasonable amount of drinking water.

“Beyond those two things, there are no stated obligations from a sanitation perspective for a construction employ-er,” Burkhardt said. “However, that doesn’t mean that an employer should just do those minimum amounts. You do still have that general obligation to take reasonable steps to ensure safety of workers.”

For sanitation facilities, employers must provide at least one toilet for every 10 to 15 employees and a cleanup facility or handwashing station for every two toilets.

“The supervisor from the company is required to inspect that sanitation system at least once per week and keep a record of it,” he said.

The act requires the toilet to include a lid, toilet paper holder and supply of toilet paper, sanitary napkin disposal and there must be a structure surrounding the toilet.

“This isn’t just what we think of in the past as a 5-gallon pail with a board on top,” Burkhardt said.

Drinking water must be provided via a municipal source or a container with a drain system.

During the pandemic, safely supplying water without increasing the risk of transmission is particularly import-ant, Burkhardt notes.

For example, some companies are encouraging em-ployees to bring their own bottles to limit contact with a communal source of water.

“That doesn’t alleviate the obligation to ensure there’s water on site, but it may mean fewer people are using it,” Burkhardt said.

Sanitation during COVID-19Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Burkhardt ex-

plained the Ministry of Labour has placed importance on the sanitation of jobsites.

“It is one of the few areas, from a sanitation perspective, where the ministry actually has legal requirements for contractors,” he said.

“As a contractor and dealing with roadbuilding jobsites, you ought to be paying attention to this and know the ministry is paying more attention to this than they have in the past.”

Above and beyondWhile the Occupational Health and Safety Act only

directly addresses toilets and water from a sanitation perspective, employers should consider a comprehensive plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on a jobsite.

“You probably don’t want the ministry showing up on your jobsite on a regular basis and you probably don’t want the bad public relations or the bad press you may get if there’s significant complaints about what’s happening on site,” Burkhardt said.

To start, companies may consider jobsite signage and communication with employees about a COVID-19 plan.

“We’ve seen some companies set up websites, other have direct communications, like handouts, about how the company is addressing COVID-19,” Burkhardt said.

As well, when anyone arrives on site, they should be asked questions to determine if they could spread the virus.

“When anyone shows up at the jobsite … are you asking them questions to ensure you’ve done your due diligence to find out if this person is a potential risk for transmission of COVID-19?” he said.

Burkhardt also recommends creating policies for the sanitation of tools, equipment and high touch surfaces on the jobsite. In the interest of contact tracing, jobsite management may consider regularly sending the same crews to the same site.

“If you are informed there is someone on your site that tests positive for COVID-19, how well will you be able to go back and say with whom they interacted with, in the week or two weeks prior to that?” he said.

From a workflow perspective, staggered start and end times also helps to minimize contact between a workforce.

“It doesn’t need to be an hour or two hours differences. It could be 10 or 15 minutes. Think about breaks and lunches. Are people able to spread out?” Burkhardt said.

PPE and COVID-19Burkhardt also notes the Health and Safety Act doesn’t

address personal protective equipment (PPE). However, jobsite management should consider their duty to protect health and safety and form a strategy for best practices.

“My encouragement is if you have workers that want to wear a mask, encourage them to wear a mask,” he said. “And I think it’s important for you to stand up and make it known you are OK with that. There’s a social stigma around wearing masks.”

As well, while there are no rules about employees working within 2 metres of each other, employers should consider taking additional steps to minimize risk of transmission.

“There are some tasks where the individuals must be within 6 feet (2 metres) of each other,” he said. “If they’re working within 6 feet of each other, it’s particularly im-portant to encourage masks. Is it required? No. Is it a best practice? Absolutely.”

DEMOLITION/WASTE

Building upon the successful legacy of the M325D L MH model, Caterpillar has unveiled the new Cat MH3040 material handler.

The new machine boasts a 25 per cent reduction in fuel consumption as well as a 20 per cent reduction in maintenance costs.

With an aging population of M325D L MH machines in scrap and mill yard operations, Cat set out to design its successor for their roster of material handlers.

“There was a gap in our product portfolio where that M325D L MH used to be,” said Brent Uitermarkt, Caterpillar’s worldwide product manager for material handling products. “That machine was clearly a known machine in the industry for its per-formance and productivity.”

While the new MH3040 is the successor to the popular M325D L MH, the machine also draws influence from Cat’s recent Next Generation excavators.

“We’re very excited about this machine. It’s built off our trusted new Next Generation excavator platform and comes with all the features and benefits that we have been introducing with those new excavation products,” Uitermarkt said.

The material handler’s new 202 hp Cat C7.1 engine meets Tier 4 Final emission standards with an aftertreatment system that requires no maintenance or downtime. The MH3040 has a maximum operating weight of 38,529 kg and a maximum reach of 15.5 metres and maximum height of 17.5 metres.

“You can see from those specs this is a clear replacement of our M325D L MH,” Uitermarkt said.

The MH3040’s boom, sticks and other high-stress areas feature thick, multi-plate fabrications, castings and forgings to with-stand wear for years of durable operation. As well, specially designed mountings on the upper frame support the new heavy-duty cab.

“We’ve made some geometry improve-ments there. Customers can actually load this and haul this without taking the stick off. That saves them significant time and money,” said Matt Santee, Cat’s north Amer-ican product specialist for material handlers.

Next Gen cabThe MH3040’s larger premium cab design

includes sound suppression to reduce oper-ating noise levels inside the cab.

“We’re utilizing our Next Generation ex-cavator cab. We’re taking some of those core designs and improving and building upon that for material handler applications,” Santee said. “Operators are going to spend 10 to 12 hours a day in this cab, we wanted to make sure it’s going to be as comfortable as possible for them.”

Smaller cab pillars combined with large tempered windows deliver all-around visibil-ity. As well, rearview and right-side cameras are standard, keeping operators aware of their surroundings.

The new joystick machine control also removes the steering wheel column to fur-ther improve forward visibility. A tip-up left console allows operators to enter and exit the cab much easier.

The MH3040’s cab also features a 25-cm high-resolution touchscreen monitor with jog-dial for easy navigation of the intuitive operator controls.

Joystick controls are ergonomically located within easy reach to reduce operator fatigue, while joystick settings and preferred power mode are quickly set to a specific user ID via the monitor.

The air suspension seat with headrest, heater and ventilator is designed to com-fortably adjust to operators of all sizes.

Smart ModeThe new Smart Mode operation auto-

matically matches engine and hydraulic power to the working conditions, which helps to reduce fuel consumption. Power Mode constantly provides maximum power to optimize productivity. The fuel-efficient engine can run up to B20 biodiesel and offers up to 25 per cent lower fuel consumption than the M325D L MH.

Offering a 12 per cent faster swing speed, the MH3040 reduces cycle times and allows operators to move more material in the same amount of time.

The advanced hydraulic system features valve priority to direct pressure and flow to

where it’s needed and delivers a balance of power, efficiency and load control. The handler’s new heavy lift mode boosts lifting capacities and improves controllability. The auto warm-up feature also reduces the time it takes for hydraulic oil warming in cold temperatures to prolong component life.

The flexible MH3040Offering a maximum 15.5-metre reach,

The MH304 is available in multiple config-urations.

Customers can choose from a range of work tool attachments in different sizes to meet the site’s material handling and pro-duction needs.

The standard 1,800 lumen LED lights on the boom, stick and cab also allow work in low light conditions. The optional 20 kW generator with wiring to stick nose helps to efficiently power magnet attachments for handling fine ferrous material.

Less maintenanceMH3040 material handler service design

changes reduce maintenance costs by up to 20 per cent.

All fuel filters feature a synchronized for 1,000-operating-hour change intervals, and the new air intake filter with pre-cleaner lasts up to 1,000 hours to reduce maintenance requirements.

The MH3040’s new hydraulic oil filter improves filtration and increases change intervals to 3,000 operating hours, a 50 per cent longer service life over the M325D L MH. Furthermore, new anti-drain valves keep the hydraulic oil clean during filter replacement to improve system longevity.

Filter life and maintenance intervals are tracked via the in-cab monitor. Featuring electric drive to operate only when neces-sary, the high-efficiency cooling fans can be programmed to automatically reverse at set intervals to keep the cores clean without work interruptions. The new right-hand-side service access provides easy access for refuelling and engine oil checks.

New to the MH3040 material handler is Cat Product Link, a standard feature that captures critical operating data such as lo-cation, hours, fuel usage, productivity, idle time, maintenance alerts and fault codes, which can be remotely accessed and tracked to boost fleet management efficiency.

New Remote Flash works around the pro-duction schedule to conveniently assure the machine is operating with the most current version of on-board software, so it delivers high performance, maximum efficiency and minimum downtime.

Caterpillar will begin shipping the MH3040 in Canada and the United States in July.

McCloskey International is expanding its recycling product range with the introduc-tion of the company’s first shredder.

The new McCloskey VTS95 mobile shredder is the first product to makes its debut for the new recycling division.

The VTS95 tracked primary shredder is capable of effectively shredding virtually any type of material from solid waste, industrial and commercial waste to bulk waste. The VTS95 is designed to meet the requirements for plants where the incoming materials will vary greatly in terms of size, composition and difficulty to shred.

“We have a busy year of new product de-velopment ahead of us to compile a range of equipment in order to meet our customer’s needs. This first addition follows a stringent and strenuous development cycle, which has seen the shredder tested and prove itself in diverse product applications across the globe,” said Fergal Mallon, McCloskey recyc-ling product line manager. “We have teamed up with Metso Waste in Denmark, who are experts in static shredding applications, and have a range of tried and tested cutting table solutions, and we intend on using these cut-ting tables in our new equipment. They are experts in static recycling equipment, and we are experts in mobile equipment, and so we see this as an exciting partnership for both

companies. It further enhances the McCloskey product portfolio and will help us to grow in existing markets and enter new ones.”

Shredder knivesThe interaction between the rotating knives

on the dual shafts runs asynchronously in both directions, ensuring the input material constantly moves to prevent bridging while maximizing shredding efficiency.

The new Hyundai HW250MH wheeled material handler is designed to meet a wide range of on-road and off-road applications.

The wheel material handler is derived from Hyundai’s wheeled excavator product line, which includes three HW series models and one 9A series compact model.

However, the HW250MH deviates from the wheeled excavator product line in two fundamental respects. First, instead of a boom and arm for digging and dumping, the HW250MH features a boom and goose neck, which is designed for lifting and carrying bulk materials or other objects.

Second, it features an elevating cab that can rise up to 2.5 metres above its platform position to provide the operator with a better view of the work area.

“The HW250MH wheel material handler will find a variety of applications in mar-ine terminals, scrap yards and other bulk materials handling facilities where its agil-ity, load-and-carry capacity and versatility will deliver outstanding productivity and efficiency,” said Stan Park, vice president of distribution and marketing at Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas.

Key specifications of the HW250MH wheeled material handler include an oper-ating weight of 26,100 kg when outfitted with the standard grapple from SNS, and net power of 174 hp at 2,000 rpm through a Cummins QSB6.7 diesel engine.

The addition of front and rear outriggers, and an optional larger grapple assembly,

increases the operating weight to 27,500 kg.As well, the wheeled material handler

features a swing speed of 9.7 rpm, and a maximum travel speed of 35 km per hour.

In the cab, the machine features an in-telligent, 20-cm touchscreen monitor, an advanced audio system, auto climate control and a deluxe operator’s seat.

For serviceability, the HW250MH is de-signed with centralized lubrication, car air filter access, a batter disconnect switch, an auto-diagnostic system and Hi-Mate — Hyundai’s telematics system.

The material handler can also be equipped with Hyundai’s AAVM (All-Around View Monitoring) system. Equipped with four cameras, including one on the left and right-side mirrors, one on the front of the cab and the standard backup camera, the monitoring system is able to provide a virtual 360-degree operating view of the jobsite.

Epiroc is expanding its popular CB Concrete Buster range with two new models for heavier carri-ers.

CB Concrete Busters, with their wide jaw openings and high cracking forces, are ideal for demolishing thick foundation walls and they make light work of cracking girders and heavy concrete at extreme heights.

The new CB 5500 and CB 7500 are designed for car-riers in the 50 to 85 tons weight class. Due to their comparatively light weight, CB Concrete Busters are ideal choices for use with high reach or long front carriers.

As well , the concrete busters are suitable for applications with highly abrasive material and low level of visibility of the product in operation. The CB range is also usable where noise is an issue and they can be used in residen-tial areas where hydraulic breakers are not permitted.

Virtually continuous closingCB Concrete Busters

are equipped with two powerful hydraulic cylin-ders which deliver virtually

continuous closing force for maximum productivity. The hydraulic cylinders are fully protected by piston rod guards. An integrated speed valve delivers faster working cycles.

The concrete busters feature cracking forces of up to 190 tons depending on the model, and the CB range is equipped with two independently moving jaws that eliminate displace-ment force, thus lowering stress levels. Cutting blades are both replaceable and reversible.

A productive feature on all CB Concrete Busters is 360 degrees of endless hydraulic rotation, which allows precise handling and positioning. If the cutter grips the material at an oblique angle, a built-in pressure relief valve allows a “self-acting movement” that brings the cutter jaw into the ideal position. This valve effectively pro-tects both the carrier and the cutter from potentially damaging reaction forces.

Concrete Buster rangeThe new CB 5500 and CB

7500 models offer cracking forces of 150 tonnes and

190 tonnes, respectively. Jaw openings for the two models are 1.6 metres and 1.8 metres.

The complete CB range now comprises six models with service weights from 320 kg to 7,400 kg, for carri-ers weighing from 2 tonnes to 85 tonnes.

Anaconda has diversified its product portfolio with the intro-duction of a new crushing division.

The company has expanded its product range with the introduction of the J12 jaw crusher as well as the I12 impact crusher.

Last year, Anaconda began consolidating its range of prod-ucts, which has allowed the company to begin its transition of entering the crushing sector.

The new product introductions are able to work in direct correlation with the rest of its product range or as stand-alone machines. The new impact and jaw crushers are backed by Anaconda’s partners, McLanahan Corporation, who have more than 130 years of experience in the crushing sector.

“This year Anaconda steps firmly into the tracked crushing equipment arena with the launch of the J12 jaw crusher and the I12 impact crusher,” said Alistair Forsyth, CEO and group managing president of Anaconda.

The generic tracked chassis is powered by a Cummins L9 Tier 4 Final engine and comes standard with a 4.3 metre variable speed vibrating grizzly feeder, hydraulic hopper wing extensions, an overband magnet and a side discharge dirt belt.

The generic chassis allows for the placement of either crushing chamber giving the dealer flexibility in rental fleets and the ability to reduce in inventory cost, while increasing fleet utilization by allowing the versatility of converting the machine from a jaw to an impactor and vice versa in minimal time.

With Anaconda joining the McLanahan family of companies earlier last year, both units will be equipped with universal crusher chambers as standard. With more than 7,000 jaw

chambers, and 1,500 impact chambers placed worldwide in the last 130 years, the chambers are known names in the crushing industry.

The J12 Tracked Jaw Crusher is fitted with a 110 cm x 70 cm direct hydraulic drive universal crusher jaw chamber. The chamber is equipped with full hydraulic adjustment and hydraulic tramp release and reset as standard. The direct hydraulic drive means the unit can also be run in reverse to satisfy a multitude of customer applications.

The I12 tracked impact crusher is fitted with a fabricated 109-cm-diameter, 4 bar rotor on a 114 cm-wide universal crusher impact chamber. Hydraulic opening of the upper section of the housing allows for easy and safe access, along with two independent gravity hung impact curtains that can be individually adjusted from the exterior of the chamber.

The J12/I12 crushing range has the versatility to allow the crushers to deal with hard and abrasive rock such as basalt and granite.

Paul O’Neill, Anaconda’s senior research and development engineer who designed the crushing range, explained how Anaconda aimed to design the range with the customer in mind.

“Core to the concept of the J12 and I12 tracked crusher range is that the same running chassis is able to be integrated with either an interchangeable, hydraulically driven, jaw or impact crusher chamber,” O’Neill said. “Not only that, the chosen jaw and impact crusher chambers have proven pedigree, namely universal crusher boxes from McLanahan Corporation.”

To feed the crusher chambers, Anaconda provided this

machine with a wide and heavy-duty grizzly feeder that can deal with the harshest of feed materials.

“The feeder is lined with replaceable wear resistant plates and has a robust grizzly screen as standard,” O’Neill said. “This will remove fines from the feed material and improve the performance of the crushers whilst reducing the wear on the crusher plates and blow bars.”

Below the feeder, the crushers have a two-way chute that allows the user to divert the screened fines either to a wide dirt belt or onto the heavy-duty main conveyor, dependent on application.

The main conveyor features impact bars directly under the crusher discharge area and powered with twin hydraulic drives to convey the heaviest of loads.

“Our crushing division are exceptional pieces of machinery of reliability on site and productivity are at the heart of your operation,” O’Neill said. “Also, with being very economical to run, allows for customers to save on fuel consumption costs.

The Anaconda crushers come complete with folding hy-draulic wing plates as standard which allows for a hopper capacity of 6.5 cubic metres.

Fully pre-tested before dispatch, the J12 and I12 arrives on site in its transport position. The crushers can be fully operational within 20 minutes of delivery on site.

Pictured here in 1961 is the demolition of the Bayview Bridge in Toronto.

The bridge was built in 1929 by the North York Township to address the ever in-creasing car and truck traffic. However, by the late-1950s, load restrictions of 10 tonnes and 50 km were required due to deterioration of the structure.

A contract was awarded in 1960 to build an upgraded version of the structure ad-jacent to the original bridge. In fact, the piers were of a design that resembled the original ones, but much sturdier.

With the completion of the replacement bridge in 1961, work began dismantling the 1929 bridge deck, structural steel and piers.

This was 'old school demolition' using a crane and wrecking ball along with a cable backhoe and dozer. Hardhats seemed to be optional.

The Bucyrus-Erie 30 B cable backhoe, rated as a 1.15 cubic metre capacity ma-chine, would have been powered by a 6-71 Detroit Diesel or similarly rated horse-

power Caterpillar or Cummins engines. The smaller Bucyrus-Erie machine, a model 22 B shown here on crane duty was a familiar sight on construction projects in this era. More than 7,000 units were produced.

By 1927, Bucyrus had merged with the Erie Steam Shovel Company to become Bucyrus-Erie with the main plant located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, in the 1950s a Canadian connection existed as some models were built in B-E satellite plants located in Guelph, Ontario as well as in Nova Scotia.

To see more than 60 restored pieces of vintage construction equipment in action, be sure to attend Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA) Canada's October event, 'Last Blast' on Oct. 17, to be held at the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario.

LIFT/ACCESS

Tadano has incorporated the first Demag-built telescopic boom crawler crane into the company’s lineup.

In early 2019, Terex Corporation agreed to sell its Demag Mobile Cranes business to Tadano Ltd. for about $215 million.

Now, the merged companies have introduced the new Tadano GTC-2000 telescopic boom crawl-er crane, which is designed and built at Demag in Zweibrücken, Germany.

According to Tadano, including the telescopic boom crawler crane in the Tadano brand complements its strong line of telecrawlers. This makes the integration of the crane from Zweibrücken into the Tadano portfolio an ideal addition from a technological point of view.

“Our goal is to become ‘One Ta-dano’. With the first telecrawler produced in Germany and branded by Tadano, this vision is now be-coming a reality,” said Ingo Nöske, director of product management for crawler cranes.

He added the ‘one Tadano’ phil-osophy will strengthen cooperation between German and American colleagues in the Tadano Group. The group will be able to take ad-vantage of the “best of both worlds” for the development of new prod-ucts. For example, the GTC-2000 telecrawler has the Demag IC-1 Plus control as well as the IC-1 Re-mote telematics system technology.

“With the integration of the GTC-2000 into the Tadano brand, we’re bringing the lone warrior into the family, so to speak,” Nöske said.

However, the AC and CC crane lineups will continue to be mar-keted under the Demag brand.

Closing a gapThe GTC-2000 closes the gap be-

tween the 140 and 240-ton capacity classes. The crane has an actual lifting capacity of more than 170 tons and a maximum load of 590 metre-tonnes, which makes the machine a flexible tool. It has a track width that can be adjusted as necessary in both symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations, so that it can be used for applications in which space is at a premium, such as bridge construction pro-jects. The crane is also ideal for construction work, where it is not only able to move and telescope components, but also luff down and retract the boom and then travel

underneath roof structures to get to where it needs to be.

Furthermore, the GTC-2000 is able to bring its strengths to bear as an assist crane, as well as when carrying out wind turbine pre-as-sembly work. And since the load charts for its 60-metre-long main boom are capable of lifting on in-clines of up to 4 degrees, its use requires less topographical ground preparation on-site than a lattice boom crawler crane. For example, it can lift a full 37.5 tons at a radius of 12 metres when working on an incline of 4 degrees with the main boom at a length of 30 metres.

Bigger boom optionsWith its main boom length of

30 metres, the GTC-2000 already features the longest reach in its class, according to Tadano, yet it can be increased further. Main boom extensions with lengths of 5, 11, 17, and 23 metres, which can be mechanically and hydraulically offset, are available, meaning that a maximum tip height of up to 83 metres is possible. The 5 metre extension can be folded onto the side of the main boom for transport to save space.

In addition to its lifting capacity, the GTC-2000 provides nearly the same manoeuvrability and ease of operation as an excavator with its travel pedals. The joysticks can be used to control the tracks, adding to the machine’s convenient controls. This is feasible thanks to the crane’s traction force and durable B9HD track components with bolt-on double grouser shoes or flat track shoes. The design, which features a powerful travel drive, provides the crane with a traction force of 1,450 kN. This allows the GTC-2000 crane to turn on a dime under load, even with the narrowest track width. The crane’s gradeability is 50 per cent, while its maximum travel speed is 2 km per hour and its ground clearance is 42 cm.

The GTC-2000 also features different track widths with three standard positions of 3.5, 4.75 and 6 metres, as well as the continuously variable track widths, which can be used in an asymmetrical con-figuration.

The tracks can be adjusted both when stopped and when travelling while the control system monitors the relevant parameters to ensure the crane remains within an allow-able configuration.

Optimized for transportThe transport width and height of

the base crane is 3 metres, making the GTC-2000 a compact crane for its class. The heaviest transport unit weighs 51.2 tons. However, if necessary, this weight can be reduced to 46.3 tons by removing the extension beams used to adjust the track width.

Tadano’s engineers attached enormous importance to safety when it comes to the crane’s setup. As most assembly steps can be controlled with a remote control or from the cab, the rigger does not have to work in the danger zone. In addition, most of the couplings are hydraulic quick-connect, which enables fast and efficient work.

The GTC-2000 crane is equipped with permanently installed out-riggers including outrigger pads, which enable the base crane to be conveniently unloaded from a lowbed trailer.

In addition, the self-assembly operation of the GTC-2000 includes the installation of two 8.27-ton central counterweights that mount on the carrier, the crawler frames, the 49.6 tons upper counterweight stack on the superstructure and the second hoist.

Ergonomic designThe accessibility of the GTC-2000

is designed to enable comfortable and efficient work on the crane. This is the case during transport, setup and operation — even when the tracks are being adjusted as the placement of the permanently installed grating platforms adjusts automatically.

The crane can even be fuelled while on a lowbed trailer, and the cab can be easily accessed during setup in order to start the machine for self-assembly.

Permanent ladders and ladder attachment points for the included loose ladder are located strategic-ally around the crane for access to key components during all stages. The crane also features anchors for a personal fall protection system at the intended ladder support points.

The GTC-2000 crane is driven by an MTU 6-cylinder engine with an output of 308 hp and a torque of 958.83 foot-pounds.

This engine complies with Tier 4 Final specifications. There are two operating modes: At a speed of 1,500 rpm, the diesel engine will run in an Eco mode that opti-

mizes fuel consumption, while at a speed of 1,800 rpm, it will have a Power Boost function available. This provides a noticeable output increase and makes it possible to carry out simultaneous movements at high output or speed during crane operation.

The two hoists of the GTC-2000 also offer a unique technological feature. The primary and auxiliary

hoists are technically identical, with both featuring a 245-metre-long, 2.5-cm-thick, wire rope with a high line pull of 15.3 tons.

The wire rope’s high line pull makes it possible to lift heavy loads with low reeving, saving time dur-ing setup and re-reeving.

The GTC-2000 will be available in North America in the second half of 2020.

Massimo Conte and Enzo Palmieri had first met years ago when they worked for other companies. Between the two of them, they have over 35 years’ experience in the pool business. “Massimo used to install my pool shells and then he moved to Vancouver for a bit. I half-jokingly said to him, when you come back, let’s open a company together,” stated Enzo. Well, Massimo did return just over a year ago. That is when Enzo from E.L.M. Con-tractors aligned with Massimo and together created Blue Stream Pools. “Our business took off and has become explosive.” Blue Stream pools does impressive custom de-sign and install of inground pools, hot tub & spas, cabana & pergolas, water features and landscape design in the GTA, Halton and Peel areas.

When Massimo first got into pool construc-tion, his company used another brand of machines. However, after only two years, the

motor blew. It was at that time they switched to Bobcat® machines and have never looked at another brand since. Enzo too used an-other brand’s machines, but when they start-ed Blue Stream Pools, Massimo introduced Enzo to Todd Gill, sales specialist for Bobcat of Toronto and Bobcat machines. They started with the Bobcat E20 compact excavator and then added three Bobcat T450 compact track loaders to their lineup. Now Enzo too is strict-ly a Bobcat machine owner. “Nothing beats the versatility of the Bobcat machines. They have superior strength and lifting power, they are compact to get into people’s backyards and the tracks get us through anything, in-cluding wet mud. They are perfect for our type of business,” stated Enzo.

By opting to monopolize on Bobcat’s fantas-tic leasing options, in four years they will be able to upgrade to newer machines. Although Massimo assures Bobcat machines last a very

long time, this gives them more options, espe-cially since their company is growing so much.

“Todd Gill has been awesome. We are so busy, and we don’t have to worry because Todd always takes really good care of us. He’s like CityTV, he’s ‘EVERYWHERE’. We both wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Todd and Bobcat of Toronto to purchase your next machines,” stated Massimo.

Thanks Enzo and Massimo.

SALES. RENTALS. SERVICE.

Liebherr’s new HS 8200 duty cycle crawler crane is based on its predecessor, the HS 895 HD, but the machine boasts an even better performance capacity.

The HS 8200 is the new Liebherr duty cycle crawler crane in the 200-tonne category.

The new duty cycle crawler crane’s design combines safety, performance and economy, as well as a high level of operator comfort, according to the manufacturer.

Thanks to the newly designed drive sys-tem, the performance and load capacity is increased by 15 per cent.

The crawler crane is an ideal machine for extraction work and is capable of not only using a dragline bucket but also a grab.

Like all products in the series, the HS 8200 may be used for various applications. For deep foundation purposes, the machine can be applied for dynamic soil compaction, as well as fitted with a casing oscillator or fixed leader. When digging a shaft, the winches can even be used with the full 35-tonne line pull in the fourth layer. Thanks to various counterweight options, the duty cycle crawler crane also performs well in lifting operations.

The new design allows the maximum trans-port weight of the HS 8200 to be reduced to only 48 tonnes. In comparison to the previous model, that equals a reduction of 12 tonnes.

The rails and walkways on the uppercar-riage, which enable safe access to all service and maintenance points at all times, do not have to be dismounted during transportation. This allows quick transfers between jobsites, creating an economic advantage.

Ground pressure monitoringThe ground load-bearing capacity and

the monitoring of the ground pressure are

decisive for the safe operation of a construc-tion machine.

The ground pressure visualization of the HS 8200 calculates the current ground pressure of the machine in real time, and compares it with the specified safety limits of the relevant jobsite. The ground pressure is displayed in the operator's cab and the operator is permanently aware of whether the machine is situated in, or is approaching, a critical area. Dangerous work manoeuvres may also be avoided or adapted in good time.

The whole concept is completed by a re-vamped design, which the machine operator experiences in the new cabin. Principle focus was set on operator comfort. For example, the oil levels of the swing drives, as well as the grab and closing winches can be simply observed on the operator’s monitor.

A modern air-conditioning system with improved airflow, an optimized field of vision and reduced noise emission, as well

as an ergonomic operator’s seat with inte-grated heating and cooling ensure a pleasant operator’s experience.

Based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Genie has outlined new recommendations and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting aerial equip-ment to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The protocols provide job-site superintendents and fleet managers with specific precautions to take in order

to keep workers and jobsites safe.

“The ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic has caused significant disruptions in the aerial access industry,” said Scott Owyen, Genie director of training at Terex AWP.

“For many weeks, aer-ial jobsites shut down to mitigate the risk of people contracting the virus, as well as to slow the spread from those who already had it. Now, as jobsites are begin-ning to reopen worldwide, jobsite superintendents and fleet managers need to think about how to best protect workers and prevent the spread of the virus. Fol-lowing the CDC’s guidance, we can offer recommenda-

tions to our customers on the most effective way for aerial equipment operators to clean and disinfect ma-chines before, during and after each use.”

Owyen explained the first, and Number 1 goal of all aerial jobsites should be to provide a safe and product-ive work environment. To achieve this, Owyen recom-mends aerial equipment operators take the following actions when cleaning and disinfecting machines:

1. Wear reusable or dispos-able gloves for routine cleaning and disinfec-tion.

2. Clean surfaces using soap and water, then use disinfectant.

3. Cleaning with soap and water reduces number of germs, dirt and im-purities on the surface. Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces.

4. Practice routine clean-ing of frequently touched surfaces.

For disinfecting machines, Genie recommends the use of EPA-registered household disinfectants.

Follow the instructions on the label to ensure safe and effective use of the product. Read the EPA’s infographic on how to use these dis-infectant products safely and effectively.

Diluted household bleach solutions may also be used if appropriate for the surface.

To make a bleach solution mix 75 ml of bleach per 4 litres of water.

Check the label to see if the bleach is intended for disinfection, and ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with am-monia or any other cleanser. When in use, leave solution on the surface for at least 1 minute.

Bleach solutions will be effective for disinfection up to 24 hours. For equipment, keep in mind that bleach may negatively affect warn-ing labels and other safety markings.

Alcohol solutions with at least 70 per cent alcohol may also be used.

“The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to it,” Owyen said. “These recom-mendations will help protect our equipment operators from contact with the virus while working at height, as well as assisting our custom-ers, jobsite superintendents and fleet managers in their efforts to promote safety in the aerial access industry.”

Following the launch of three new C-class telehandler models at World of Concrete 2020, Xtreme has added a fourth model to the series.

The new Xtreme XR1734-C has a 7,711-kg lift capacity, up to a 10.3-metre maximum lift height and a forward reach of 5.1 metres.

Weighing 15,131 kg, the XR1734-C is powered by a Cummins 3.8L 120 hp Tier 4 Final diesel engine and has 11-degree, left-to-right frame levelling.

The XR1734-C joins other recently launched models, in-cluding the XR1347-C, XR1547-C and XR1555-C, expanding the Xtreme telehandler line to 22 models, one of the largest ranges in North America.

With a commonality focus across the telehandler lineup, the XR1734-C shares a similar chassis, cab as well as elec-trical and hydraulic systems with other recently introduced models, including the XR843-B, XR944-B, XR1055-B, and XR1147-B, XR1347-C, XR1547-C and XR1555-C.

This helps to improve operator and service technician familiarity with Xtreme telehandlers, and also helps to reduce parts inventory for customers running a fleet of Xtreme units.

All new units are electric over hydraulic, and feature Xtreme’s new modular cab design, which allows the cab to be switched from open to enclosed — or vice versa — with an optional kit. This gives customers greater flexibility when operating their telehandlers in multiple environments.

The new Xtreme cabThe XR1734-C telehandler is available with either foam

filled or solid tires, and is offered with a choice of three cab configurations – open, enclosed or enclosed with heat and air conditioning.

As well, the new cab is upgraded with a more modern, user-friendly design, and includes a USB port for charging cell phones and other devices.

Additional air vents have been installed throughout the cab for increased air conditioning circulation. The new design cab, which is now fitted to all Xtreme models from the XR843-B to the XR1734-C, has new storage pockets for carrying straps, chains and other items securely on the lift.

A wide range of C-class attachments are available, in-cluding pole grapples, sling mounts, truss booms, buckets and personnel platforms, in addition to the range of fixed and fork positioning carriages and fork tines to customize the lift for a variety of applications.

Common with all Xtreme telehandlers, the new XR1734-C has 360-degree operator visibility from the cab, intuitive controls that enable the operator to keep one hand on the steering wheel at all times, and a machine-rated boom lift point for safe handling of suspended loads.

COMMITTED TO SERVICE EXCELLENCE SINCE 1976

Designed to be one of Potain’s most high-cap-acity and versatile cranes, Manitowoc has introduced the MDT 569, the latest model to join its MDT top-less crane range.

The crane’s load charts, along with its premium tech-nology package, make it an attractive new option for North American customers, according to the company.

The MDT 569 topless crane’s modular design fea-tures optimized component sizes and weights, facilitating easy transport and assembly.

Thibaut Le Besnerais, vice president of global products for tower cranes at Manitowoc, said the MDT 569 combines smart design with performance.

“We have seen strong demand for larger topless cranes in recent years,” Le Besnerais said. “The new MDT 569 topless slewing crane will help meet our customers’ needs for great-er capacities, while also preserving the already well-

known easy transport, fast assembly and industry-lead-ing performances that our other topless cranes deliver.”

Options for the topless crane’s maximum hoisting capacities are 20 tonnes, 25 tonnes and 32 tonnes, while its maximum jib length is 80 metres. Tip capacity is up to 4.2 tonnes when using the 25-tonne capacity model and working with an 80 metre jib.

The MDT 569’s maximum line speed reaches 195 metres per minute when the crane is equipped with the 150 HPL hoist. As well, the crane can be equipped with a new 8-metre cross-shaped base that is simple to assem-ble and more cost effective compared to previous bases.

The topless crane is also more compact for trans-port than previous models, needing only nine standard containers to transport the crane’s upper assembly. The topless design adds flexibil-ity to sites where multiple cranes overfly the construc-tion zone at the same time.

Manitowoc’s Crane Con-trol System (CCS), also helps improve operator comfort and efficiency, as well as the crane’s ergonomic controls and Ultra View cab.

“Our focus is to bring to the market a robust crane in a compact design, offering multiple transportation op-tions without compromising performance,” Le Besnerais said. “The MDT 569 can be fully assembled and erected in only two days.”

Plans are for the first crane to be shipped in July 2020.

Snorkel is introducing a new family of large deck construction scissor lifts, with a focus on ultra-high lifting capacities, to meet customer demand for increased jobsite productivity.

Designed to lift more materials to the working area, the new family includes four models ranging from the S9031RT-HC with a maximum working height of 11.4 metres and lifting capacity of 1,587 kg, to the S9070RT-HC, with a maximum working height of 23.3 metres and a lifting capacity of 907 kg.

With dual powered extension decks and four hydraulic stabilizers with automatic levelling as standard, the new scissor lifts deliver a high specification lift to handle heavy duty applications.

With a maximum platform size of 8.23 metres by 2.28 metres when fully extended, the new lifts provide a vast working area and help to reduce the number of times the operator needs to lower and elevate the lift.

The smaller S9031RT-HC and S9043RT-HC models can both be driven at full height, and the larger S9056RT-HC and S9070RT-HC can be driven at height up to 13.1 metres. With 50 per cent gradeability, all four lifts are powered by a Kubota diesel engine and have four-wheel drive capabilities with large 91 cm high grip foam-filled tires for handling rough terrain.

For material loading, the new scissor lift lineup is de-signed with an integrated double material loading gate on

the platform to allow a full-size pallet to be placed directly onto the deck. This makes the loading of materials onto the lift both safe and more efficient, as the correct material handling equipment can be used.

With weights ranging from 6,803 kg to 11,566 kg, the high-capacity Snorkel scissor lift family has been designed to provide a long-working life. The dual-shear scissor stack has been constructed from high strength steel for durability and lighter overall weight.

From a service perspective, the new lifts share many common parts with other Snorkel lifts, including the same drive system as the Snorkel mid-size telescopic boom lift family and on-board diagnostics system for operator and service engineer familiarity. A side mounted engine with swing-out tray makes light work of engine maintenance.

Snorkel expects full production of the new scissor lift lineup to begin in late 2020.
