    Health and Safety LawIntroductionHealth and safety management should be a straightforward part of managing your business

    as a whole. It involves practical steps that protect people from harm and at the same timeprotect the future success of your business.There are legal health and safety requirements that you have to meet, but accidents also

    cost money and time people off work, material costs and damage to buildings, plant orproduct. These costs are often not covered by insurance.

    This book explains what the law requires and helps you put it into practice.

    What are the main causes of ill health and accidents at work?very year over !"" people are killed at work and several hundred thousand more are

    in#ured and suffer ill health.The biggest causes of days off work sick are aches and pains such as back problems and

    stress.

    The most common causes of serious accidental in#ury at work are slips and trips.The most common causes of death from accidents are falls from a height and being struck

    by vehicles in the workplace.

    The law and guidanceThere are two main kinds of health and safety law. $ome is very specific about what you

    must do, but some, such as the Health and $afety at %ork etc &ct '()* +H$% &ct, isgeneral, requiring you to do what is -reasonably practicable to ensure health and safety.

    The Health and $afety xecutive +H$ has produced publications to help you to decidewhat this means in practice.

    Information about useful publications and websites is given in a -/ind out more section ineach chapter. 0riced publications have an I$12 number. H$ leaflets are free for a single

    copy, but are sold in priced packs for multiple copies.

    1- Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HSW Act)&ll workers have a right to work in places where risks to their health and safety are properly

    controlled. Health and safety is about stopping you getting hurt at work or ill through work.3our employer is responsible for health and safety, but you must help.

    What employers must do for you

    ' 4ecide what could harm you in your #ob and the precautions to stop it. This is part of

    risk assessment.! In a way you can understand, explain how risks will be controlled and tell you who is

    responsible for this.

    5 6onsult and work with you and your health and safety representatives in protectingeveryone from harm in the workplace.

    * /ree of charge, give you the health and safety training you need to do your #ob.

    7 /ree of charge, provide you with any equipment and protective clothing you need,and ensure it is properly looked after.

    think the work or inadequate precautions are putting anyones health and safety atserious risk.

    %ork equipment is almost any equipment used by a worker at work includingse the right equipment for the #ob

    o $elect the right controls

    o ?ake sure machinery and equipment are maintained in a safe condition

    !ssess the risks"efore #ou start$

    check$ before using any machine$ that it is com"lete and free from defects*

    look at the residual risks identified by the manufacturer in their informationCn instructions "ro!ided

    with the machine and deal with them*
