The Lunar New Year is considered by many Chinese people as the most important of all the Chinese festivals. In Ancient China, the New Year was a time when the Emperor was honoured by the multitudes and reaffirmed as Son of Heaven. Nowadays, the New Year signifies the coming of Spring and a time for family reunions and the joyous and noisy celebration of the end of Winter months. Everywhere in the world with a Chinese community celebrates this holiday in great style, holiday delicacies abound in shops and houses are lovingly cleaned and decorated. Houses are cleaned from top to bottom to “sweep” away the old year and its misfortunes, and welcome in the New Year and good luck. In support of the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children Dear Students and Parents, Happy New Year! Cheng Gong, the Chinese Committee, with the support of the Mandarin Teachers and staff of HKA, is hoping to raise money to buy New Clothes for the Lunar New Year for children under the care of HK Society for Protection of Children. HKSPC was set up in 1926 to deal with victims of extreme poverty and sadly, today, in affluent HK, there are still many children who come from very low ncome families, or who are victims of abuse and neglect. HKSPC runs 27 units across HK to provide services for these children and their families, including Day Creches, Nursery Schools, Residential Homes. More information is available on their website www.hkspc.org. From the 9th to 18th of January, we will be collecting the HKSPC “Lai See”/Red Envelope attached to this note. If you wish to donate and support this cause, please send in this HKSPC “Lai See”/Red Envelope with a cash donation or cheque (made out to “HKSPC” ) donation to your child!s Mandarin Teacher. $100 buys 1 item of clothing for 1 child. There are more than 3000 children under the care of HKSPC, so we hope you will kindly support this campaign. As very few of the children speak any English, the Mandarin Teachers will help all of our students write a simple message in Mandarin on the back of the Red T-shirt card as part of the activities leading up to the Lunar New Year. The Red T-shirts will be put up on a special bulletin board at school until we deliver them to the HKSPC with our donation. What We Aim To Do New Year, New Start Why Do We Want To Do It Families tend to pull out the stops and new clothes for everyone are the norm during this time, as relations and friends visit each other in all their new finery. Obviously it is not as easy for the families assisted by HKSPC to provide new clothes to their children, so let’s help them do that! Children from the HKSPC at work & play!
