ON THE COVER

Look back at Lemont’s biggest storiesBy DAN FARNHAM

[email protected]

LEMONT – As the newyear nears, it’s time to revisitwhat made 2014 memorable. From stories regarding thecontroversial proposed sportscomplex to the closing of Mt.Assisi, this year’s top storieswill live on long after the balldrops next week.

1. Complex debateWhat happened: The Lemont

Village Board riled up oppo-nents of the proposed LemontSports Complex when it votedJan. 6 to repeal an ordinanceto publicly finance the project, effectively killing a referen-dum on purchasing bonds forthe project from the Marchelection ballot.

The village said it wouldinstead seek private financingsources for the project, whichmade the question asked inthe referendum irrelevant.

Opponents attended boardmeetings for the next severalmonths, saying private financ-ing was still taking out a loanthat the village and taxpay-ers would be responsible forpaying if the complex failed toproduce revenue.

The village has maintainedthat the sports complex is aneeded attraction that willhelp revitalize the downtown.

The future of the complexis still in question as thevillage tries to figure outlogistics of the project, suchas whether cleanup of the site

would be too costly.Quote of note: “We have to

have a destination locationfor people to come and be ableto spend money,” Lemont MayorBrian Reaves said.

sports complex

2. School’s outWhat happened: Students,

parents and alumnae reacted

with shock and sadness whenthey learned in January thatMount Assisi Academy wouldbe closing at the end of theschool year.

The all-girls Catholic highschool, which had been openfor 63 years, cited decliningenrollment, increased deficitsand shrinking number of sis-ters for its need to close.

School supporters initial-ly fought to keep the schoolopen, using social media to tryto raise money for the school.

help lead it.

Quote of note: “There will

never be another Mount

us. But will [the students]

find places they can grow

and become unique women?

I certainly hope so,” Provincial

Superior Sister Therese Ann Quigney

of the School Sisters of St. Francis of

3. Business brewingWhat happened: Several new

businesses opened in Lemont

during 2014, but two stood out

as ambitious ventures that

hope to become anchors for

the downtown: the Pollyanna

Brewing Company and Gelso-

somo’s Pizza.

Both opened in September

and are meant to be draws

for people from Lemont and

beyond.

Gelsosomo’s opened first,

in the former locations of the

restaurant This Must Be the

Place and the Mindflow Cafe.

Pollyanna opened a couple

of weeks later along the I&M

Canal in Talcott Square.

Quote of note: “We chose

Lemont, as well, once we saw

the space because we like

the small, historic feel that it

has. A lot of people are very

proud to live in Lemont … We

want them to be proud of this

brewery, as well,” Pollyanna

Brewing Company master brewer

Brian Pawola said.

4. Missing KeepatawWhat happened: For the first

time in more than six decades,

there was no Keepataw Days

festival during Labor Day

weekend.

The nonprofit organization

that had run it the past couple

of years disbanded at the end

of 2013, leaving it up to groups

such as the Village of Lemont

and the Lemont Park Dis-

trict to determine whether to

continue the tradition. With

resources already devoted

to other summer events, the

groups decided against hold-

ing the festival.

The village said it might

bring back the Keepataw Days

parade in future years, but

with the village’s Heritage

Fest being held in July, it

seems unlikely the four-day

carnival will return.

Quote of note: “I think it

will make people make sure

5. Tough rescueWhat happened: The

Lemont Police Department

and Lemont Fire Protection

District worked together to

rescue a man April 9 who

had fallen to the bottom of

an embankment next to the

railroad tracks along Main

Street between Fourth Street

and Wheeler Drive.

Officer Brian Schmitz

found the man, who had ap-

parently been lying there for

a day after going to the area

the previous night to search

for his phone.

After determining the man

was alive, Schmitz called in

the fire protection district,

who used a rope pulley sys-

tem to be able to get the man

up the steep embankment

and into a helicopter to be

taken to a hospital.

Schmitz was recognized by

the Lemont Village Board for

his life-saving efforts.

Quote of note: “I don’t

was worth that,” Lemont Police

officer Brian Schmitz said.

6. Fresh leadershipWhat happened: Lem-

ont-Bromberek Combined

School District 113A hired

its new superintendent in

March, Courtney Orzel.

She replaced Susan

Birkenmaier, who left at the

end of October 2013 after only

a year with the district.

Board of education mem-

bers emphasized finding a

better fit with the district

who would stay in the posi-

tion for a longer time.

Orzel is partway through

her first year with the dis-

trict. So far under her leader-

ship, the district has shown

an emphasis on integrating

technology into lessons and

increasing communication

between the staff and the

community through areas

such as social media.

Quote of note: “I feel like

this is an opportunity for me

and for the board to work

together to provide stability

for our community,” Lemont

he would be retiring at the

end of the year after 11 years

as chief.

As with Shaughnessy, the

Village of Lemont found its

8. Library renewedWhat happened: Voters ap-

proved a referendum duringthe November election forthe Lemont Public Library tomove ahead with a $2.8 mil-lion renovation plan.

The project will includeadding a new meeting roomnext to the front entrance andreorganizing existing space inorder to create more meeting

rooms and an enclosed quietreading room.

The Library Board said italso needs to make updates onthe nearly 20-year-old buildingand some of its equipment.

Payments on the previousdebt service are set to expirein 2015. But, because of morefavorable borrowing condi-tions on the new debt service, tax payers will still see adecrease on their property taxbills.

The library hopes to startrenovation in spring or sum-mer of 2015.

Quote of note: “All of ushere are really pleased thatthe voters have chosen tosupport the referendum. It’sa great result, and we reallynow look forward to havingvarious people help us finalizeplans on the building,” LemontPublic Library Board presidentVytenis Kirvelaitis said.

Exciting things are happening in District 113A.Communications has been a central focus for us this year as

we have been diligent in improving our communications to ourfamilies. Many of our staff now have Twitter accounts and aresending out many learning activities from their classes. If youhaven’t tried Twitter, youcan follow me at @drorzel.

We have also launched ourdistrict Facebook page. Whilethis recently began, we alreadyhave 171 likes. If you haven’tliked our page, please do so.

School events and activitiesare posted on a regular basis. Moving forward with communica-tions, we are exploring the option of updating our district websiteto streamline information and provide a site which is moreuser-friendly for our parents, students, staff and community.

It appears that Senate Bill 16 has been placed on the backburner by the legislators – for now.

There is no doubt that legislators are concerned about schoolfunding reform and SB16 has begun important conversationssurrounding school funding. Please know that we will continueto closely monitor the information coming out of Springfieldand will provide information as it becomes available.

Looking forward, the district is researching potential payto ride options for students who live within 1.5 miles of theirschool and are not currently eligible for bus service.

The Transportation Committee will be administering asurvey to parents not eligible for bussing in early January togain their feedback regarding this possibility. Additionally, thedistrict is evaluating its residency procedures and is consid-ering the option of having all students verify residency for theupcoming 2015-16 school year.

Safety and security of our students and staff is always ourpriority.

As part of our long-range safety and security planning, theBoard of Education approved the installation of security cam-eras in the interior hallways and other large group areas of OldQuarry Middle School. We believe the cameras will enhanceour safety and security procedures, and we will be providingparents with additional correspondence regarding the timelinefor implementation.

Thank you for your continued support, encouragement andsuggestions as I have transitioned into the superintendency. Iam looking forward to the many incredible opportunities thatlie ahead for us in 2015.

Santa greets children Dec. 6 as he makes his way to Budnik Plaza to light the tree during Lemont’sHometown Holiday event.

Sharing the stories that impact the people who live and work in

Lemont is our passion, and it’s an honor to be part of the commu-

The Lemont Park Foundation found multiple ways to help those

in need during the holiday season. As part of Lemont’s Hope and

Friendship Foundation’s holiday care packages for families in

need, the park foundation donated 30 $50 Lemont Park District

SOUND OFF

Time to act in D-200A recent CUSD 200 report

states we have the second-lowest property taxes collectedper student, second-lowest taxrate, a below average operationexpense per pupil, and belowthe state average in per pupilspending. CongratulationsBOE – right? No, these austerenumbers mean we can’tcompete with surroundingdistricts to keep and maintaingreat teachers and providecurrent technology and servicesfor our children. The last EDreferendum was 30 years ago.Time to act.

Thumbs up to theGlen Oak RestaurantI Recently attended a luncheon

with family at the Glen OakRestaurant in downtownGlen Ellyn. Thanks to therecommendation of a wonderfulwaitress, we were treated to thebest cream of mushroom soupever. Make it a point to visit theGlen Oak on any Wednesdayto enjoy this delicious repast.

Thank you Glen Oak forproviding a special delectabletreat to our holiday luncheoncelebration.

Sound Off reflectsopinions, not factsI’d like to remind readers of

the Sound Off column that, asthe guidelines clearly state, the comments “should not betaken as fact.” Several recentcomments about the Glen EllynPark District, which all appear

to be from the same person, aremisleading at best and, in somecases, simply not true. For therecord, a routine exit poll surveyis being conducted, based onsupport from a majority of theboard, and will cost about 10cents per resident; it is not a“pool survey.” The proposed turfat Newton Park represents thebest price negotiated by a pur-chasing cooperative commonlyused by public agencies, and isfar from “the most expensive

turf option.” It has yet to bedecided which features will beincluded. I would encourageall readers to contact the ParkDistrict, or visit their website, for accurate information.

Media needs to stopsensationalizingI certainly agree with last

week’s article, “Officer was doinghis job.” The media needs to stopbuilding this up and antagoniz-ing people. They are somewhatresponsible for all the protests. The officer was doing his job.

Do not sign referendumfor Downers GroveI encourage you to not sign

any referendum for a newpolice station and fire station onOgden Avenue. For 30 years, theresidents of Burlington Highlandsand Orchard Brook have had toput our lives on the line to try toenter onto Ogden Avenue or toexit into the Highlands from Og-den Avenue. With the increasedtoll fees, there has been a hugeincrease in traffic on Ogden and a

big increase of semi-trucks usingOgden now to avoid toll fees. Wehave been trying to get a controlsignal between Saratoga andBelmont for 30 years to no avail.Anyone who thinks there is noproblem needs only to witnessthe hazard between 4 to 7 p.m.and 7 and 9 a.m. every day withthe amount of traffic. Regardlesswhat the cost is to put the newstation on Ogden Avenue in orderto get a controlled signal, it willbe worth every dollar to insurethe safety of our residents in ourarea. I encourage the council toproceed with the project.

Freedom of speechmust be upheldI’m going to start my own

protest right here, and it’s againstpeople in thewestern suburbsmaking ignorant comments aboutthe rights of other people. Canyou imaginewhat kind of riotsthere would [be] if people couldnot pass judgment on people fromother ethnic and social economicbackgrounds? It wouldmakeFerguson look like Disneyland.

Pioneer prowessSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

The western suburbs have

sent its fair share of football

players to big-time programs,

and another group of college

coaches are tapping the area

to bolster their programs. The

Pioneer League competes in
