We express our gratitude to our readers for their valuable suggestions and appreciation for the first issue of our resumed newsletter. The newsletter has emerged as a valuable source to share information about our college with our stakeholders, faculties, staff and students about the development and achievements of the college as well as our alumni. We are proud to share some of our noteworthy achievements during this year. LMCP has been selected for setting up the ‘Atal Incubation Centre (AIC)’ with a financial assistance up to Rs. 10 crores over five years from NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission. The AIC will support innovative ideas of incubates and help them to convert their ideas into startups. The incubation centre facilities will also be accessible to healthcare industries and researchers. The college has also been selected for a grant under Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) of Govt. of Gujarat for three years. Under this students will be motivated for innovation, IPR generation and startups with the help of dedicated and research oriented faculties and experts from the field. LMCP has started a new programme, Pharm. D. Course (Self- finance) this year with the intake of 30 students. It gives us immense pleasure to present to you

the second issue of our college newsletter. We

express our gratitude to our readers for their

valuable suggestions and appreciation for

the fi rst issue of our resumed newsletter. The

newsletter has emerged as a valuable source

to share information about our college with

our stakeholders, faculties, staff and students

about the development and achievements of the college as well

as our alumni.

We are proud to share some of our noteworthy achievements

during this year. LMCP has been selected for setting up the

‘Atal Incubation Centre (AIC)’ with a fi nancial assistance up to

Announcement of Atal Incubation Centre at LMCP

Our college has been selected for setting

up the ‘ATAL INCUBATION CENTRE’, with the

fi nancial assistance up to 10 crores over 5

years, from NITI AAYOG’s ATAL INNOVATION

MISSION. Out of the 3700 entries from all

over India, 13 applications were fi nally

selected among which LMCP is the only

Pharmacy institute in the country selected

for setting up the Atal Incubation Centre.

Ultra sophisticated laboratory facilities will

be established in the centre, thus making

it a unique proposition to progress the

innovative ideas of incubates into startups.

The incubation centre facilities will also

be accessible to healthcare industries and

researchers.

Introduction of New Course

A Pharm. D. course (Self-fi nance) has also

been introduced at LMCP in June 2017,

which is coordinated by Dr. Gaurang Shah

(Professor, L. M. College of Pharmacy). Our

distinguished alumnus Shri Pankajbhai

Patel, CMD, Cadila Healthcare Ltd. (Zydus

group) was the inspiration behind

commencing the Pharm. D. course at

LMCP. It is a 6 years course, affi liated to

Gujarat Technological University and

includes internship at the renowned

Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad.

• A State Level Interactive Seminar

and Workshop on ‘Cheminformatics in

Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry’

was organized on December 15, 2016.

The workshop was designed to train

researchers and young faculty in designing

lead molecules using cheminformatics.

More than 50 participants attended the

seminar. The Chief Guest Dr. C. J. Shishoo

(Eminent Scientist and Retd. Principal,

L. M. College of Pharmacy) and Convener,

Dr. M. T. Chhabria placed special emphasis

on application of cheminformatics in

organic synthesis.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

LEADING STORIES

• A one day National Workshop

on ‘Breaking Barriers to Redefi ne

Pharmacognosy’ was organized on

July 9, 2016. The workshop was aimed

to propose the restructured syllabus of

Pharmacognosy subject for M. Pharm.,

which was framed in a pre-workshop

meeting headed by Dr. M. B. Shah

(President, Society of Pharmacognosy,

Gujarat State), under the guidance of

Dr. N. R. Sheth (Member, GPSC).

The fi nalized syllabus would be forwarded

to AICTE to make it applicable centrally

in all the institutes throughout India.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Kokate (National

Advisor, Society of Pharmacognosy, India)

delightfully announced to consider the

workshop as ‘Ahmedabad Declaration’.

The course had seen an excellent

beginning with 120 applications for

admission, against the sanctioned

intake of 30 students. The orientation

programme for the pioneer batch was

conducted on August 21, 2017, in the

graceful presence of

Shri B. M. Shah (Director, AES) and

Dr. A. H. Kalro (Academic advisor, AES).

Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) launched at LMCP

Govt. of Gujarat has launched the SSIP

under which L M College of Pharmacy has

been identifi ed as grantee institution. It is

a privilege for LMCP to receive this grant

of Rs 1.2 crores spread over 3 years.  The

objectives of SSIP are to develop student

centric innovation and pre-incubation

ecosystem for the students, build internal

capacity of the institution, creating

pathway for mind to market projects/

research/innovation/ideas of students and

interface with public system initiatives at

state and central level. LMCP will mentor

the students, organize entrepreneurship

development camps/seminars/

workshops, sign MoU’s for collaborative

research, communication and soft skill

development, help in development of

prototypes, fi ling of patents and promote

student startups.

• A guest lecture on ‘Quality Systems and Method Validation for Bioanalytical Laboratoty’

was delivered by Mr. Manoj Patel, Assoc. Vice President, Lambda Therapeutical Research

Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad, on August 12, 2017.

• An expert talk on ‘Flow Cytometry: Basic Principles and Advancements in Cell/Particle

Analysis’ was delivered by Dr. Sanjaya Mallick, Director and Chief Scientist, Cytometry

Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata on July 25, 2017.

• The college hosted ‘Pharmachrome’, as part of GTU Central TechFest-2017 on March 30

& 31, 2017, which saw the participation of a multitude of pharmacy students from all

over Gujarat at events like Potentia, Picsnovation, Pharma-recipe, Pharma-modelling,

Myself medicine and Poster presentation. The event was graced by the presence of

Dr. Navin Sheth (Vice Chancellor, GTU).

• A GUJCOST sponsored one day National Seminar on ‘Woman: An Inspirational Soul’,

was organized on March 18, 2017. The event featured eminent speakers like Ms. Ruzan

Khambatta (Founder of Police Heart, 1091), Dr. Sonal Kotdavala (Gynecologist and

Obstetrician) and Dr. Pratibha Aathwale (Dentist).

• Dr. Abhay Sapre [Vice President and Head, Formulation Development (Transdermal),

Zydus Technologies Ltd.] delivered a guest lecture on ‘Formulation Challenges and its

Remedies’ on March 11, 2017.

• An institute level elocution competition organized by Knowledge Consortium of

Gujarat (KCG) on the topic ‘Khadi for Nation: Khadi for Fashion’ was hosted at LMCP on

February 20, 2017.

PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES

• Dr. Milan Satia [CEO, Ethicare Clinical

Trial Services] delivered an expert talk

on ‘Design, Conduct & Evaluation of

Bioequivalence Study’ on February18,

2017.

• A guest lecture on ‘Updates in

Pharmacognosy Research’ was

delivered by Dr. Venu Gopal, Principal,

Govt. College of Pharmacy, Pondicherry

on February 16, 2017.

• A seminar on ‘Applications of Mass

Spectroscopy’ was conducted on

December 10, 2016. Dr. Chirag

Dholakiya (Technical Support Executive,

Waters India Pvt. Ltd.) & Dr. Prinesh

Patel (MS Specialist, Water India

Pvt. Ltd.) were invited to share their

expertise with our UG and PG students.

• Dr. S. S. Savale [Individual Consultant

& Ex-General Manager, Bio-evaluation

centre, Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd.]

was invited as a speaker for a Seminar

on ‘Biosimilars: A Current Perspective’,

conducted on December 2, 2016.

• The college hosted State Round of

Indian Pharmaceutical Association

Sponsored IPA-Devinder Pal National

Elocution Competition on the topic

‘Pharmacists for a Healthy India’

on October 17, 2016 under the

coordination of Dr. Anita Mehta (Hon.

Joint Secretary, IPA, Gujarat Branch).

RESEARCH GRANTS & COLLABORATIONS

• Dr. Mamta Shah, Dr. Preeti Verma and Ms. Karuna Modi received a grant of Rs. 30 lakhs in February 2017 spread over three

years, from Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homeopathy (PCIM&H), Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India for

developing Pharmacopoeia monograph on single drugs of plant origin.

• Dr. Mahesh Chhabria received an industrial grant of Rs. 13 lakhs from Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. for ‘Synthesis and

characterization of known and unknown impurities of certain APIs’, which was completed during the period of February to April

2017.

• Dr. Gaurang Shah collaborated with Calsita Futuristics Pvt. Ltd, Vadodara for ‘Evaluation of Aldose Reductase Inhibitory Activity of

Herbal Formulation’ (February-May 2017), and also with Claris Life Science, Ahmedabad for ‘Evaluation of Technical Report of Iron

Sucrose Formulation for Submission to USFDA’ (April-May 2017).

• Dr. Mamta Shah is working in collaboration with Calsita Futuristics Pvt. Ltd, Vadodara for ‘Development of Optimized Methods for

Extraction from Medicinal Plants and Quantifi cation of Chemical Markers thereof’ (June 2017).

FACULTY RECOGNITIONS & AWARDS

• Dr. Mahesh Chhabria was nominated as a Member of Search Committee for Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University in

January 2017; as Fellow of Gujarat Science Academy, 2017 as well as Senate member for three years at NIPER-Ahmedabad

from March 2017. He was also elected as Member of Board of Studies and Faculty Board in Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy,

Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT) in February 2017.

• Dr. Anita Mehta was selected as a Member, PCI Inspectors Panel and Member, RC Committee, AICTE Inspectors Panel. She

continues to offer her services as the Dean of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) since 2012 and as Hon. Joint Secretary,

Indian Pharmaceutical Association (lPA), Gujarat State Branch.

• Dr. Mamta Shah has been elected as Subject Expert at Siddha Committee by Pharmacopoeial Commission of Indian

Medicine & Homeopathy (PCIM&H), New Delhi in March 2017. She was also nominated by Gujarat Technological University

(GTU) as a mentor for all the students of GTU under 6th consecutive International Experience Programme (IEP) at Laurentian

University, Sudbury city, Ontario in June-July 2017.

• Two of our faculty members were recognized as ‘Best Research Guide for the Year 2016’ by the prestigious ‘Rajnibhai V. Patel

PharmInnova Award’: Dr. Anita Mehta (in both M. Pharm.-Pharmacology and Ph. D. category) and Dr. Mamta Shah

(in M. Pharm.-Pharmacognosy category).

• Dr. Parloop Bhatt was nominated as an Executive Committee Member in Indian Pharmacological Society and Indian

Pharmacological Society-Gujarat Chapter in 2016. She is also selected as Committee member in Data Safety Monitoring

Board. She was also awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health and Hospital Management for Nursing and

Allied Health Professionals (PGDPHHM), 2015-16 from Indian Institute of Public Health. Dr. Bhatt presented papers at two

international conferences held at American College of Cardiology, Washington and Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and

Interventions, Orlando in 2016.

• Dr. Mahesh Chhabria was invited as a Chief Guest at the inaugural function of GUJCOST Sponsored One Day National Level

Seminar on ‘Recent Advancement in Pharmaceutical Development and Technology in India, organized by A-One Pharmacy

College, Anasan, in March 2017.

• Dr. Mamta Shah was invited as a Chief Guest at the valedictory function of GUJCOST sponsored National seminar on ‘Role

of Indian System of Medicine in Era of Make in India’ organized in association with Society of Pharmacognosy, Gujarat

Branch, at Shree Naranjibhai Lalbhai Patel College of Pharmacy, Bardoli, held in September 2016.

• Dr. Sunita Goswami received ‘Best Poster Presentation Award’ (as co-author) for ‘Anxiolytic and antidepressant activity

of sitagliptin and linagliptin in rats’ at State Level Poster Presentation in Pharmaceutical Sciences, organized by Arihant

School of Pharmacy & Bio-Research Institute in October 2016. She also received third prize for her poster entitled, ‘Early

age at menarch and health complication’ presented at GUJCOST Sponsored One Day National Seminar on ‘Women – An

Inspirational Soul’, organized by Women Development Cell (WDC), L. M. College of Pharmacy, Ahmedabad, in March 2017.

• Dr. Gaurang Shah was elected the President of Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Gujarat State Branch in November

2016. He is also nominated as Chairman of Institutional Ethics Committee, NOVA Pulse Infertility Institute, Ahmedabad.

• Ms. Karuna Modi and Dr. Mamta Shah secured Second position for the poster entitled ‘HPTLC quantification of scopoletin

in Ipomoea turpethum root and its market formulations’ presented in Two days National Conference and 21st National

Convention of Society of Pharmacognosy, organized by Society of Pharmacognosy and Government College of Pharmacy,

Aurangabad, in March 2017.

• During the last academic year, 14 faculty members from our college presented research papers at 12 international and

31 national conferences.

Dr. Navin Sheth [Member, Gujarat

Public Service Commission] was

appointed as the Vice Chancellor

of Gujarat Technological University

(GTU) in December 2016.

The journey of Dr. Ketan Patel

[Chairman & Managing Director, Troikaa

Pharmaceuticals Ltd.], as a successful

entrepreneur, was documented in the

book entitled ‘The Innovators – Stories

of Hi-Tech Entrepreneurs’, supported by

Department of Science & Technology

(DST), New Delhi.

Ms. Norina Sookmoulla  [Managing

Director, Noripharm & Noorpharma

Pharmacies, Mauritius] was honored

as ‘Africa’s Most Infl uential Women

in Business and Government Award

2016’, organized by CEO Global. She

also won the prestigious ‘The Golden

Globe Tigers Award-2017’ under the

category of ‘Women leadership award

in healthcare’.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF ROLLING TROPHYFOR B. PHARM. TOPPERSMr. K.D. Patel, the President of L. M. College Pharmacists’

Club, Baroda, during the ‘Golden Jubilee Year’ Celebration

of the club on April 22, 2017, instituted trophy for the

Topper of B. Pharm. Final Semester, which will be rotated

every year henceforth.

LMCP Alumni Meet-2017The 2nd Alumni Meet of the college was held on January 5,

2017, under the banner of ‘LMCP Alumni Association and

Research Society’. Distinguished alumni -

Dr. C. J. Shishoo (Ex Principal, LMCP), Dr. Habil

Khorakiwala  (CMD, Wockhardt Ltd.), Dr. N.R. Sheth (Vice

Chancellor, GTU) and Dr. H. G. Koshia (Commissioner, FDCA,

Gujarat) graced the occasion with their presence. During the

meet, the resumed publication of L. M. College of Pharmacy

Newsletter - ‘The Memoir’, for the academic year 2015-16

was launched by the Principal, Dr. M. T. Chhabria and the

distinguished guests. As a part of scientific events of the

meet, three expert lectures were organized for students by

Dr. Anita Mehta on ‘Career path for pharmacist in Australia’,

by Dr. Kanan Shah (Business support officer, The Pharmacy

Guild of Australia, Sydney) and ‘Pharmacy Practice in USA’, by

Dr. Jahnavi Kharidia (Director, Clinical Pharmacology, Indivior

Pharmaceuticals, Virginia) and Mr. Chetak Buaria (Global Head

of Commercial Excellence for Biopharma business at Merck

KGaA, Germany). The alumni meet was concluded with a

cultural event coordinated by Dr. Mamta Shah and

Dr. S. S. Savale, followed by a grand feast.

in February 2017. He also delivered

a talk on ‘Adulteration of Ingredients

in Herbal Dietary Supplements - An

overview of the ABC-AHP-NCNPR

Botanical Adulterants Program’ for the

UG and PG students.

• An ‘Awareness Program on AIDS,

Thalassemia, Addiction and Voluntary

Blood Donation’ was organized

by ‘Saksham’ - Red ribbon club, LMCP

in January 2017, for the children of

Vivekanand High School, Ahmedabad.

• An ‘Awareness Campaign for Cashless

India’ was conducted by LMCP NSS

volunteers in January 2017, for the

students and non-teaching staff

members of LMCP and nearby colleges.

• A ‘Tree Plantation Drive’ was conducted

in September 2016, in which 75

Ayurvedic plants were planted in our

Medicinal Plant Garden by the students

of the college in order to increase the

green cover of the garden.

• The students of LMCP celebrated

Teachers’ Day on September 5, 2016

by dressing up in Sarees and Suit. The

students thus got an opportunity to

stand in the teachers’ shoes for a day,

and appreciate the eff ort a teacher

makes every day.

• ‘Jashn-E-Aazadi’, the 71st Independence

Day of India, was observed with the full-

fl edged patriotic spirit of the members

of college on August 15, 2017. Flag

Hoisting was done by the Chief Guests,

Shri Natubhai Panchal (Dy. Secretary,

AES), and Dr. R. K. Parikh (Head,

Pharmaceutics Department, LMCP).

During the event, the meritorious

students of last semester were

felicitated with trophies.

• The NSS unit of college organized a

free ‘Eye Checkup Camp’ in association

with Vasan Eye Care Hospital,

Ahmedabad, in April 2017. The students

as well as teaching and non-teaching

staff members were provided with

a comprehensive computerized eye

examination and counseling regarding

eye care.

• A Farewell Ceremony was conducted

for the fi nal year students of D. Pharm.,

B. Pharm. and M. Pharm. courses in

April 2017. The event was clubbed with

NSS Annual Day Celebration which

featured the giving away of certifi cates

to NSS volunteers. At the event, Komal

Patel (B. Pharm. Sem.-VIII) was awarded

with ‘Outstanding Student of the Year’

EVENTS AT COLLEGE

Bhavsar (B. Pharm. Sem.-IV) were

awarded with ‘Student of the Year’ and

‘Best NSS Volunteer’ award, respectively.

• ‘Swachhta Abhiyan-2017’ was

organized by the NSS unit of LMCP

in March 2017. A total of 29 NSS

volunteers (B. Pharm. Semester III and

V) actively participated in the cleaning

of our medicinal plant garden area.

• LMCP-NSS Unit in collaboration with

‘Saksham’-The Red Ribbon Club of

LMCP conducted a ‘Blood donation and

Thalassemia Testing Camp’ in February

2017. A total of 43 units of blood were

donated by students and faculties; and

74 students got tested for Thalassemia.

• The NSS volunteers of LMCP raised

‘Sainik Welfare Fund’ in February 2017

from the students and staff members for

extending support to Indian soldiers.

Updates of Course

• LMCP had successfully undergone the PCI inspection for

M. Pharm. (Self-finance) Affiliation on August 12 & 13,

2016. Dr. P. R. Vavia (Professor, The Institute of Chemical

Technology, Mumbai) & Dr. M. N. Saraf (Principal, Bombay

College of Pharmacy) carried out the inspection.

Inauguration of AES Café

The Ahmedabad Education Society has invested approx.

Rs. 50 lakhs to provide canteen facility to the college. The

inauguration of ‘AES-Café’ was done on the auspicious occasion

of Independence Day -2017 by Shri B. M. Shah and Shri

Natubhai Panchal.

Launch of LMCP BlogTvisha Shah (B. Pharm. Sem.-4) created the offi cial Blog of LMCP

with the assistance of her team Ankita Yawalkar (Co-editor),

Yash Bhavsar and Yash Mehta (Photographers) & Vijaykumar

Bhavsar (Reporter), under the guidance of Dr. Mahesh Chhabria

and Dr. Radhika Pandya in January 2017. Till date, the blog has

drawn attention of more than 10876 visitors, with 45452 views

from 47 countries.
