Awards worth $5.8 million have been made to more than 250 students, a 15% increase on the number of recipients in 1996-97.

There also is a trend for scholarships to have broader aims than simply providing financial support.

An increasing number of awards are linked to internships, work experience or support for study abroad, rewarding academic excellence with a chance to broaden horizons.

Principals and University Ge Together To Enhance IT 1n Education usT's 加t Principal叫y attracted

155 principals and teachers, eager to discuss the practical issues of information technology in Hong Kong's schools.

With a new emphas is on IT in education announced by the SAR Government, UST faculty and staff decided to make IT the focus for this event, designed to increase cooperation and understanding between schools and the University.

Representatives from a quarter of Hong Kong’s secondary schools joined UST faculty for panel talks, small group discussions and tours of IT facilities.

“Principals’Day has provided a venue and an opportunity to exchange ideas on a very hot issue;' said Yau Yat Heern, principal of Queen Maud Secondary School and one of the panelists at the day's opening session.

“I hope this wil l be a starting point for intensive interaction betw·een the University and secondary schools that goes beyond meeting once a year;’ Mr Yau said.

Many of the issues raised were practical, from classroom space for new equipment to adequate technica l support and training. Others pointed out that increased use of IT would change school culture.

Panelist Yip Chee-Tim, vice principal of Pui Ching Midd le School and also chairman of the Hong Kong Associat ion for Computer Educat ion, saw technology changing a teacher-oriented, one-way education system into a student-oriented, interactive cu lture, and questioned the potential e在ect on teachers and students.

Panelist Sister Margaret Wo嗯, princi

pal of St Paul’s Convent School and a pioneer of computer education in Hong Kong schools, highlighted the benefits of

university-school collaboration. Prof Roland Chin (COMP), one of the

senior faculty members leading the event, is aware of the problems facing the schools. “There is a lot that the University can do to help in the long, intermediate and short term;' Prof Chin said.

In the long term, the University and the HK Institute of Education (HKIEd) are preparing to launch fou門ear joi1 degr programs to provide future IT and science teachers 1~1ith a strong grounding in IT. UST will offer the science and IT courses and HKIEd the education and field work elements.

In the intermediate term, Computer Science is developing an interactive courseware program for high school subjects . The program will supplement classroom and textbook learning and be accessible online or on CD-ROM.

In the short term, UST can help with teacher training. The School of Engineering has already launched a training program for teachers with little or no computing experience (see Genesis, 18 Feb 1998).

“I envisage subject-based IT training too-for instance, a course for physics teachers on the computing tools and online materials relevant for their subject;’ Prof Chin said.“Over several courses, the teachers could create a Hong Kong database of materials for their subject.”

Prof Chin sees benefits for the University as well as for society in general. "Students will arrive at UST familiar with comp utin g and exposed to interactive learning;' he said. “The better they are at lea rning for themselves, then the better students they will become.”

CAUGHT 平d巴山IN THE WEB Internet Killed The Radio Star You know how it is with the Web. Once you’ve seen some surf, it becomes an amusing, if fairly useless, pastin1e. That 時, until you discover what it does for radio.

When your radio reception is so bad that you can’t receive RTHK wi出-out interference from a Vladivostock shipping channel, discovering 出at your computer doubles as an international radio receiver is big news.

All you need is a sound card, speakers, a set of headphones or tolerant work mates, the usual web browser and Internet connections. You will also need audio playback software such as Realplayer, which can be downloaded from many radio sites or 企omCCST.

Then pick your station. Timecast (www.timecas t.com) has links to over 500 stations around the world, as well as live broadcast events such as sports and concerts . When you reach the station's homepage, follow the instructions, then sit back and enjoy the sounds.

For instance, you can listen to ABC News from New York for live news , sports and chat at ww1ν.abcnews.com, or enjoy rock and outrageous breakfast shows from London's Virgin Radio at www.virgi,”。dio.co.uk . You can also link into our own campus Internet radio at home.ust. hklca111pusradio/.

There is a downside. Just as radio reception has 。在days’ so ,I\Teb conges tion can play havoc with your listening pleasure. Some of the sites are less 出anperfect and not all computers are power ful enough to let yo u play the radio and work at the same time-drat.

St山, whether you're far from home or an armchair traveler, being able to tune into the rest of the world is wonderful. And I haven’t even mentioned Internet television .. .

Louis, in the state of Missouri. I've been here for three months and

I enjoy my life here very much. I enjoy walking on campus because 出e buildings are so beautiful. The buildings are European-style, like castles, with lots of trees, grass and even squirrels . So natural and so clean-you don’tfindany trash.

Some American buddies told me that their apartments are ugly; yet I really couldn’t tell, I was so caught up in the picturesque environment. The apartments are well built and well designed, wholly different from the concrete jungle in Hong Kong.

I feel comfortable, relaxed and peaceful here since 出ere are not many people around you all the time-you have plenty of space.

Washington is a very cosmopolitan school. More than half the students in the business school are Asian, which I didn’t expect.

My group of friends now includes

]apanese, Taiwanese, Korean, Indonesian, Indian, Malaysian, African, Mexican, European, and of course American students.

We always have meals and fun together. They teach me their languages, some useful phrases to help me survive in their countries. I’ve found out 也atwe

have many similarities, although we come from different corners of the globe.

People here are very riice . Even though they don’t know you, they’11 greet and smile at you. I’ve met some awesome Americans who practice English with me and teach me slang.

I am also impressed with the “Speak

可Nith Us” program organized by the university’s International Office. I am assigned a volunteer who is supposed to spend an hour talking English with me or showing me around.

My volunteer, Sharon, spends more than an hour and a half with me every week. Together we’ve tasted original American food, gone shopping and traveled around St. Louis.

But there are two sides to everything, and the bad side is boredom. We don’t have much choice of entertainment, though it’s easy to take shutt les and metrolink (similar to LRT) to go off campus to malls. We often go to see movies (only US$3 .75), go to parties or play sports.

I’ve gained much more than I expected from the exchange. In particular, I've developed precious friendships with people from different backgrounds. It has proved to me 出at cultural d丘ference is not an obstacle to friendship.
