Careers

Law careersIt is a mistake to think of a law degree merely as a narrowroute to a legal profession. On the contrary, a law degreeopens up a wide range of possible careers.

Approximately 70 per cent of our graduates do indeed goon to qualify as solicitors or barristers. This requires oneyear’s further training in the form of either the Legal PracticeCourse for intending solicitors, or the Bar ProfessionalTraining Course for intending barristers plus, in both cases, professional on-the-job training.

Once qualified, a solicitor or barrister may choose to enterinto either a private practice or employment with suchentities as the civil service, large companies or localauthorities. For those who do not choose one of the legalprofessions, a law degree is a particularly valuablequalification that is highly respected by a range ofemployers. Employers know that a law graduate hasacquired a variety of useful skills including a capacity forlogical and critical thought, the accurate use of language, communication skills and the ability to make a persuasiveargument. Thus, our graduates are to be found pursuing awide variety of careers.

A significant number of our law graduates are recruited byaccountancy firms. Others go into management, insurance, banking, teaching, public relations, the civil service and thearmed forces.

Less well-travelled paths chosen by our graduates includethe theatre, the representative of a farmers’ union and acommercial pilot.

Given the breadth of opportunities available to them, it is notsurprising that unemployment among law graduates isamong the lowest of all degree programmes.
