Grad Update We often have people ask us what happens to our kids after they graduate from high school. Many of our kids seek to further their education and are able to do so through con- tinued sponsorship and/or scholarships with the Interna- tional Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons. Some go to local universities or institutes and a few have even travelled as far as Argentina to attend Bible School. Currently 7 grads are helped in some capacity with further education. Whether the kids attend university or not, we provide our grads with housing for at least a year after finishing their education (longer for females) and help them look for jobs so that they can have a smooth transition into their adult life. Marlon is one of last year’s grads who is in seminary. He has decided recently that he would like to be a missionary. A Big Thank You to our Service Teams

The Juniper Tree Ch. Home is a blessing to our kidsand we want to advance with construction whiledoing our best to keep it clean and maintained.

Since May we have been encouraged by teams fromLawrence Free Methodist (KS), Door Creek (WI),Holy Trinity (NC), the Eaton family (PA), HespelerBap. (ON) and Crestwicke Bap. (ON). The kids areespecially excited about the new sports court, increasing number of farm animals and more grass.

This year we also had two teams serve at the Friends of Peru Home inAndahuaylas; Maple Grove EFC (MN) and Moraga Valley Pres. (CA) aswell as a visit from Heritage Church (OH). The teams gardened, painted, worked on a retaining wall, did soccer clinics and encouragedour kids spiritually.

As Misión TEC in Pucallpa comes under Kids Alive we look forward tohosting teams in the jungle as well in 2011! To find out more about howteams help us, check out this posting on the Kids Alive Peru blog.

We are also very grateful to our many donors: individuals, childsponsors, companies and foundations who have given to increase ourcapacity here in Peru and to help sustain the work.

Celebrating Independence Day: Oasis Style

During the month of July, it’s hard to miss that all of Peruseems to be covered in red and white. Though IndependenceDay is July 28th, celebrations crescendo throughout the monthuntil that date and even spill over into the 29th. The Oasis had

a major celebration that involved many of the children dressingin outfits from different parts of the country.

Farewell to the

ChadwicksJon and Elise Chadwickfound out about Kids Alivewhile teaching at a nearby

school for missionary kids. After volunteering at theLima Children’s Home on aweekly basis they eventually

joined Kids Alive in Peru foranother two years. Their daughter, Lilia, was born herein Lima. Sadly for us they returned to Indiana in August.

Jon did a great job hosting teams, putting out the LlamaReporter (including this one!) and keeping the Kids Alive

Peru blog updated among other things. Elise got awardedbest Kids Alive Sponsorship Coordinator for 2009 whilsthaving a baby. Both were tremendous examples ofhumbleness and servant attitudes. They are greatlymissed by missionaries, staff and kids alike.

They recently wrote, “What an amazing two years it’s

been! Working with the Home has given us so many op-

portunities to grow in our understanding of who God is.

As we return home to the States, we want to thank each

and every one of you service team members, short-term

missionaries, and friends and family that came to serve the Home, and us missionaries, as well. We are eager to

return someday on a service team of our own.”

Pachamanca

It may be hard to believe, but dinnerfor sixty people is cooking under thatdirt. Pachamanca , the Quechua wordfor “earth oven,” is an ancient tradi-tion of using the earth to help seal inheat in order to cook a meal.

Large stones are heated over a fireand placed at the bottom of a pit. Thefood is cooked slowly for hours in the

ground. A  pachamanca  is not a typicalfamily meal, but an experience to beshared with friends and family.

OASIS DIRECTOR IMPRISONED! by M. Fietje

Juan Carlos Del Cuadro Marin, Director of the Oasis, was recently jailed. The real perpetrator of the crime, in a police interview, gave his name as“Carlos Del Cuadro Marin”. As the man had no ID, a “brilliant” detectivelater looked up the name in the national registry and came up with our

Juan Carlos as someone to be captured. During a visit home to Iquitos,Juan Carlos’ ID # was flagged at the airport and he was placed in a policeholding cell. Fortunately after a few hours the police knew he was innocent, as Juan Carlos didnot have a big scar and tattoo as did the real criminal, so they treated him well. Unfortunately itstill took 4 days in jail, a lot of $$$ in lawyer’s fees and a flight to a judge in a different provincewith a police escort, all paid by us of course. If he hadn’t have gone to face the charges directlyhe might still be in Iquitos. BUT GOD uses everything for good to those who love Him. Much likePaul, thru this incident, Juan Carlos was able to witness to many prisoners and police as he had a“captive” audience. Personally I am glad Michael Hendrik Fietje is so hard to spell for most!

Director’s Deliberations This past Thursday evening upon arri-val at the Juniper Tree for the weeklydevotional with the older kids allthe younger children were excitedly

pouring out the gates on their way to pass out tracts andevangelize in the town along with their housemothers. Thesinging in the devotional was led by one of our older girlsaccompanied by three of our older boys playing guitars and acajon  (a Peruvian drum). Then Marlon (see front page) en-thusiastically shared God’s Word with us.

This past Sunday two of our older kids in Andahuaylas werebaptized and a number went on a mission trip with their churchto a city nearby. At Christmas the Oasis always holds an

evangelistic Christmas Dinner inviting many relatives andfriends of children who attend. Last year around 500 peopleshowed up to hear the true meaning of Christmas.

This is what Kids Alive is all about! We want to rescue kidswhom the world has shunned or forgotten, let them knowthat their Heavenly Father loves them so much that Hesent His only begotten Son to die in their place so thatthey might have abundant life, and then encourage themto share that Truth with others.

There is a lot going on here that can have a great impacton many children and families. All our ministries are un-derfunded and there are many more children that needYOUR help. Please help rescue a child this Christmas!
