The February Board of Directors
meeting was held on Tuesday, February
22, 2011. The crowd was larger than usual
right before an Annual Meeting. Jerry
Atwell spoke to the crowd about his
concerns for Village harmony. He then
tended his resignation from the Board
effective immediately and left the Board.
The remaining Board then conducted
old and new business. Bill Griggs,
Treasurer, reported on the state of
finances in the Village and then expressed
his disappointment with some residents
and tended his resignation, effective at
2:30 pm that day. Each Board member
then spoke individually on Village dis-
harmony before resigning. Neil Volmer
also resigned followed by Dick Ryden and
Howard Sehr, Vice President. After closing
the meeting, the last to resign was Jackie
Gatewood , Board President, leaving Joe
Jurasich, Secretary, as the only remaining
Board member.
After the election on March 1st, the
Village will have four Board members and
the three unexpired one year terms will be
addressed. Section 4.3 of our bylaws
addresses vacancies on the Board and that
information has been included.
4.3 Vacancies. Vacancies and newly
created directorships resulting from any
increase in the authorized number of
directors may be filled by the affirmative
vote of a majority of the remaining
directors then in office, or by a sole
remaining director, and the directors so
chosen shall hold office, in the case of a
vacancy, for the remaining term of their
predecessors and the case of an increase in
the authorized number of directors, until
the next annual meeting of Members. If
there are no directors in office, any officer
or Member may call a special meeting of
the Members for the purpose of electing
the Board.

accomplishments of the year 2010 and
thanked all the volunteers who keep our
Village running.
Ralph Kruger, of the Election
Committee, announced the election
results. There were 617 residents voting
and the four new Board members for a
two year term are: Meinecke, Sebring,
Lehman, and Jurasich. Votes by

Subsequent to the Annual
Meeting, the officers were elected

Spring is almost here. Wild flowers are starting to poke
through here and there after the wonderful rainfall we
received. I love the smell of the desert and freshness after a
rain (even if it rains on our car show). It doesn't seem to take much rain to
encourage everything to grow (including weeds).
Have you gotten your pen and calendar out by now? March is a very busy
month and by the time you read this it'll be half gone so let's start with Friday,
March 25th. Plan on attending on Friday night and enjoy Erik the Entertainer-
Electric Blue Entertainment-in the Superstition Center. He entertains from
7-10 pm and the tickets are $8.00/person.
Saturday, March 26th from 5pm - 8:30 pm is the Lions Casino Night in the
Superstition Center. A night packed full of fun for only $20.00/person. Then,
spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon on March 27th in the Superstition Center
enjoying the sounds of the MBV Spring concert at 3:00 pm for only
$5.00/person. Tickets are available at the Activity Office or at the door.
Gather your friends together and plan a night at Barleen's Arizona Opry on
Tuesday, April 5th. The meal is at 6:30 pm and the show is at 7:30 pm.
$27/person, Tickets are available in the Activity Office. I'm putting together a
Mystery Trip for the end of April and a destination for "Let's Do Dinner" on the
last Wednesday of April. Watch for the announcement. Take care of yourself
and have fun!

Thanks to all of you who
called, sent emails and gave
me hugs. Criticism is all a part of the job
and I am not quitting the Mountaineer or
any other committee. I enjoy
volunteering and I think all of us
should pitch in in some way and
make our beautiful
MountainBrook Village a
better place to live. Until
next month please enjoy
our March issue of the
Mountaineer.

I wish to express my thanks to the
library committee for their support and
understanding. Having been on the
library committee for 16 years, leaving
was not an easy decision to make, but a
necessary one. It was great working
with all of you. Keep up the good work,
you are a fantastic team. The flowers
and card were very much appreciated.
Thanks, Diane Kissner.

Why do we trim trees?
There are many reasons why we trim
trees and pruning objectives should be
established prior to trimming. Below are
two of the basic objectives and the pruning
types to achieve the objectives.
Hazard Reduction Pruning is
recommended when the primary objective
is to reduce the danger to a specific target
caused by visibly defined hazards in a tree.
Some examples of hazard pruning would
be a broken branch hanging from a tree
over a side walk, part of a tree over
hanging on a roof and hitting roof tiles and
a tree canopy hanging so low that it hits
you in the face when you try to walk past
it.
Maintenance pruning: is recommended
when the primary objective is to maintain
or improve the tree health and structure,
and includes Hazard reduction pruning.
Some examples of Maintenance pruning
would be a tree hanging low that needs to
be elevated for clearance, a tree that is to
large for the area it was planted in and
needs to be reduced in size, a tree that has
broken branches from storm damage that
need to be removed and a tree that
becomes unbalanced or lopsided and
removal of dead branches caused by
freezing temperatures.
With the extreme cold temperatures that
we have had this winter you may have
some freeze damage to your trees
depending on the type of trees you have.
Some varieties of trees that may have
frozen are Citrus, Ficus, Jackoranda and
Orchid trees. You will not know for a
couple of months how far these trees froze
back to until new growth appears when it
starts warming up therefore you should not
trim them until you know how severe the
damage was. Ficus for example really
shouldn’t be trimmed until next fall. The
reason being is that the dead leaves and
branches will help protect the inner part of
the tree from being sunburned. If you only
had minor frost damage on your trees you
should be able to trim them in the next
couple of months. Remember not to rush
pruning the freeze damage from your trees
as you may do more harm than good. Let
nature take its course and let the trees leaf
out before starting to prune.
Helping Hands is a network of
community volunteers whose purpose is
to provide, through volunteer effort,
shot-term support for home bound
residents, recuperating patients from
hospitalizations and particularly those
folks who have no one at home to help
them; no family nearby or only a small
network of older friends who might be
able to help. When all else fails,
Helping Hands can be available to the
above while searching for a more
permanent means of being able to
maintain a quality of life within the
home.

The annual Gold Canyon Lions Casino
Night will be held March 26, 2011. This is
a fun night for everyone. It’s an
experience you won’t want to miss. There
will be food, raffles, a silent auction, and
of course, blackjack tables, craps, and a
Texas Hold-em tournament. The evening
will end with a live auction of a few great
items such as a Holland America cruise
and Southwest airline tickets. This is the
seventh year the Lions Club has hosted a
Casino Night and it gets better each year.
This is the major fund-raiser of the year
for the Gold Canyon Lions. Money earned
at this event will go to support the Lion’s
camp for special needs people, the
Foundation for Blind Children, and local
charities. It also helps the club provide
glasses for those in need and support for
the visually and hearing impaired.
Casino Night is a great way to support
your community and have fun while you
do it. The Lions thank you for your
support in the past and hope you will join
them again this year for a great evening.
Tickets may be purchased at the
MountainBrook Office, from any Lions
member, and selected locations in the
community. Watch for the signs in their
windows. Remember to purchase tickets
early. There are a limited number of
tickets, and each year is sold out. You
don’t want to be the one missing the fun!

Peggy MalsomI know how Sarah Palin feels. Well,
actually I don’t. I’ve never been the
governor of a state or ran for a national
office or been interviewed by Katie
Couric. But I have made a few
embarrassing public misstatements I
would rather forget.
A couple of years ago Dennis and I
were camp hosts at Boyce Thompson
Arboretum State Park. We got to stay
there in our motorhome in exchange for
20 hours of volunteer work each per
week. Every morning the sun would rise
over Apache Leap to illuminate
Picketpost Mountain. We would smile in
amazement that we were lucky enough to
witness such grandeur. A daily walk
through the garden revealed new delights.
It never disappointed, not once.
Dennis usually collected the admission
fees in what he affectionately called “the
Box”. He welcomed folks from our home
state of Washington with “How about
those Mariners (or Seahawks)” depending
on the sports season. His favorites were
the Canadian visitors who always were
teased with, “Sorry, I just gave the
previous car the last Canadian discount.”
Luckily our neighbors to the north
displayed a great sense of humor before
handing over $7.50 per person.
I tried a couple of different jobs before
settling in comfortably as a daily tour
guide. I had to learn the names of
hundreds of plants as well as the history
of the park, its founder Colonel
Thompson, and the surrounding area. It
was a daunting responsibility that I took
seriously. I made notes which I reduced
to color-coded 3x5 cards for each of the
different sections of the garden. I
practiced, inserted humorous comments
where appropriate, and walked the trails.
I knew when to move the crowd along
and where to pause for a rest. I
thoroughly enjoyed the tours, the people
and sharing the garden I had grown to
love.
One day after expounding about the
calvary signaling from the top of
Picketpost Mountain, a lady pulled me
aside. “Honey,” she said, “I didn’t want
to stop you. You seemed to be enjoying
yourself so much as you were telling the
story. But I think you meant to say
cavalry. What you said was Calvary
where our Lord and Savior was crucified.
That’s in the Holy Land, dear. Not
Arizona.” With that she smiled sweetly,
patted my arm and walked away.
I got a thousand things right that day.
Well, a hundred at least. I could tell a
male jojoba from a female jojoba. I could
show three differences between a Saguaro
and a Cordon Grande cactus. I could tell
at least six uses for an agave plant besides
making tequila. But I misspoke once in
front of a crowd and I got caught.
I blame it on a youth spent listening to
hour-long sermons in a small
fundamentalist congregation. Then I
heard Governor Jan Brewer make the
exact same mistake substituting calvary
for cavalry. I’ve decided it’s just a tongue
twister: calvary, cavalry, Calgary…
It wasn’t my only public humiliation.
It’s not even my worst. Wait until you
hear about the time I got caught dumpster
diving in Pittsburgh. Now that is
something I would really rather forget.
Even the calvary couldn’t save me from
that humiliation.

Our Saviors
Lutheran Church,
in Gold Canyon,
recently completed
construction of its
new worship center
at 5301 Kings
Ranch Road, Gold
Canyon. The
members are
holding an open house to give the entire community a chance to see the new facilities on
Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to come and take
a tour of the new facilities and enjoy refreshments.
Construction was completed in December, 2010 in time to celebrate the Christmas
Season, but the open house was delayed to take advantage of milder weather. The
facility, built in a “U” shape around a landscaped courtyard, features a main sanctuary
that can also serve as a place for meetings and dinners, a serving kitchen, classrooms and
office space. The courtyard, complete with a flowing waterfall can be used as a
gathering place as well as for outdoor weddings, baptisms and memorial services. The
nearby tower houses a columbarium at the base and cell phone antennae above. It is
completely enclosed so the antennae are not visible. An area has been set aside for a
future sanctuary if and when that is needed. The paved parking lot can accommodate
200 vehicles
Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Gold Canyon is part of a three campus congregation.
The congregation was first established in East Mesa at 612 South Ellsworth Rd in the
1980’s. Services were begun in Gold Canyon in 2003 using rented facilities.
Construction of the new facility was begun in June 2010. Epiphany Lutheran in Apache
Junction is the third member of the three campus ministry.

Let me start with good news. The

in compliance with county guidelines.
Also there are no restrictions on
potlucks. Root beer floats are ok.

The heater for the hot tub
quit at the end of February and was
beyond repair. The firebrick was
crumbing, the insulation was falling
out. There was a hole in the heat
exchanger and rust was everywhere.
We got a $500.00 discount and the cost
of the new one was just under $2700.
By the end of the meeting six of the
Board members resigned, so by the
time you read this, there will have been
an election and there will be three new
members and a four person Board. The
new Board will have to decide how to
fill the three unexpired terms. Section
4.3 of the bylaws states how to fill the
positions.

Dolores ThayilAre you interested in making new
friends?
Are you interested in travel?
How about joining SWANs? The
Superstition Women’s Activities
Network was started in 2007 by MBV
resident Dolores Thayil to provide a way
for women to form new friendships, try
new activities, and travel together. The
group meets (usually) the first Monday
of each month, 6-9 pm, in the
Mesquite/Palo Verde Rooms here in
MBV. Members bring a snack to share
and their own beverage. Each meeting
includes a short business/program
session and then is followed by games
that members bring to play, like Mexican
Train, Texas Hold ‘Em, and others.
As the group continues to evolve in
response to member requests and
interests, new activities and events are
added. For example, new in 2010 was
the addition of a quarterly international
lunch/brunch outing to some place
unique in the Valley area. In 2011, a
“member show and tell” time has been
added to the agenda for some meetings.
This provides an opportunity for a
member to share with the group a hobby,
craft, or other topic of interest. Also new
this year will be an extra meeting (twice
annually) devoted exclusively to travel.
At these special meetings, invited travel
companies (two different ones at each
meeting) will be able to show their
offerings and answer questions. For
more information, check the group’s
website at

Calling All Ladies . . .
Mountain Brook Village was well represented at the Lost Dutchman Marathon
aid station #8 Sunday, February 20. Although the weather was not ideal, 37 of our
hearty volunteers bundled up and passed out water, energy drink, and vocal
encouragement to the over 500 runners that passed our station at the 14 mile mark.
There were many appreciative smiles and" thank you's" by the runners on a cold,
windy and cloudy day. Thanks to Lee Juenemann for the photos.

April 13, 2011 “Hopi Summer:
Letters from Ethel to Maud” by
Carolyn O’Bagy Davis. During the
month of April all libraries and book
discussion groups in Arizona read the
same book to foster a sense of
community. In 1927 Maud, a wealthy
New Englander and Ethel, a Hopi
potter struck up a remarkable
friendship. Their letters record a
history time in Arizona. You can
obtain more information on your
computer at OneBookAZ-2010.
Books suggested for discussing in
fall of 2011 are:
The Carrion Vine by Erane
Elizabeth Scully
Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
*On January 11, 2012* Stanley
York is asking us to read a book
written by J A Jance. Pick your
favorite and we will have overall
discussion on author and her books.
Stanley led excellent discussion on
Francis York and his books in January
of 2011.
It is not necessary to have read the
book nor vital to participate. You are
always invited to walk in and enjoy a
lively discussion. There is no signed
membership, just enjoy a good
discussion.
Carol ElrodMy gosh, what a busy month!
Stella George and Dixie Nelson are
giving tennis lessons on Wednesday's
@ 2:00 PM. These fun classes are for
folks who are beginning tennis or
just starting back. They have had a
great turn out. Everyone is welcome.
Thank you Dixie and Stella. There is
round robin on Thursday afternoons
@ 1 pm for all of us, regardless of
playing ability. Lots of new people
are playing round robin on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday @ 8:00 am.
Welcome to you all!
The women's tennis group (twenty
five of us) had a fun luncheon at the
new Fairway's Grille. The food was
delicious. Just think, twenty-five
women, separate checks, and they
had just opened, kudos to the chef
and staff!
It is time for the March
Tournament, it is the last get together
before we are saying goodbye to our
good friends until next year.. The
tournament is Thursday, March 31
for the women, Friday April 1 for the
men and April 2 for the doubles. The
social and dinner is the evening of
March 2nd. Sign-up sheets will be
on the bulletin board by court one.
Again, thank you to the all the
volunteers who put these activities
and events together.
Please do not forget to keep our
courts and surrounding areas clean.
The trash containers can be emptied
in the large container beside the
pickle ball court. Remember if not
you, then who? See you on the
courts.
TENNISTENNISTALKTALK
March, 201120
David Larsen took his first picture at
the age of five, and then really got
involved with photography during college.
His first job, after serving in the army
during Viet Nam, was marketing for
Pentax cameras and other photographic
products distributed by Honeywell, Inc.
That was a great job for a techie like him--
he got paid for playing with all the newest
equipment and planning many future
products.
He taught photography for 16 years at
the community college in Cheyenne,
Wyoming. He quit teaching a few years ago, so he and his wife,
Jan, could spend the winters here in MBV.
After 31 years in real estate sales, he started his own
photography company, Lone Tree Images, LLC. He provides
wedding, birthday, anniversary, portrait, product and other
photographic services. Clients are located in many of the states
and Tokyo, Japan. You can see samples at
www.LoneTreeImages.com.
Last year, he started exhibiting and selling Fine Art Images
and was accepted into membership in the Artists of the
Superstitions. During March 2011, he will have some of his
images at the MBV Art & Craft Show
(March 12th) and at Art in the Olive Groves
(March 20th @ The Olive Mill in Queen
Creek). All of his images are for sale in sizes
from note cards to large wall art.
David is an active Friday hiker with the
MBV group and documents much of what
they see on his Blog
(www.LoneTreeImages.com/Blog.html).

(Revised 3/1/11)

Peggy MalsomHer friends and family know
MountainBrook Village resident Cathy
Longman as a busy, smart, talented
lady. Now the world knows it too.
Cathy has been singing all of her life.
That paid off last October when her
group, the Scottsdale Chorus, won first
place and a gold medal at the Sweet
Adelines International Competition in
Seattle, Washington. But, as most
success stories go, it didn’t happen
overnight.
Cathy sang in an ensemble during
her high school days in Tiskilwa,
Illinois, north of Peoria. She also took
voice lessons as well as performing
solo. During college and law school
she continued to sing in various groups,
but it wasn’t until moving to San
Francisco that she joined the Sweet
Adelines. That original group of about
25 women, called the Sound Wave
Chorus, sang locally for fun. It was
through her association with them that
she first became aware
of the Scottsdale Chorus
who put themselves on
the map by winning the
2005 competition.
Cathy moved to
MountainBrook Village
in 2006, took a year off
due to her mother’s
illness and subsequent
death, then sought out
and joined the
Scottsdale Chorus of the
Sweet Adelines in
January 2008.
According to Cathy, the
audition process was
grueling. Having to
learn two songs to sing
with a quartet in front of
the world famous
director and music
committee where she
had to hold her own part
in the quartet was daunting. Regular
attendance was not only expected, but
mandatory. Still, she did it.
The Sweet Adelines International is
a 30,000 member women’s educational
music association founded in 1945.
The Scottsdale Adelines is a female
four-part barbershop style harmony
chorus with innovative choreography
and glittering costumes. This Chorus
consistently ranks among the top three
of more than 600 choruses around the
world. Current members range in age
from 15 to 80.
Each year every chorus has to
compete in its region in order to
qualify. Scottsdale faces tough
competition at regionals against rival
Harbor Lights. The 2009 competition
in Pasadena qualified Scottsdale to
compete in Seattle at the October 2010
International competition where they
not only took first place, but also
scored the highest score that has ever
been scored.
Cathy hopes to bring the Scottsdale
Sweet Adelines Chorus to
MountainBrook Village next year to
sing for the residents. She is checking
out scheduling now so keep your
fingers crossed. They will be
performing next October in Houston as
the outgoing Champions. Then they
will have to start all over again with the
qualifying competitions. In the
meantime, it’s kind of neat to have a
gold medal winner, one of “the best of
the best” living right here in
MountainBrook Village.
Next year Cathy sings lead (the
melody) with a Singing Valentine
quartet. Impress your lovely lady by
having her serenaded with a song by
Cathy and friends. When Cathy is not
singing, she is writing trusts or selling
real estate. She is currently the owner
of East Valley Estate Planning, LLC, an
Arizona certified legal document
preparer focusing on estate planning
such as wills, trusts, and powers of
attorney. She is also an active realtor
with West USA Realty Revelation and
her team is known as the My AZ
Property Team. If you are interested in
Singing Valentines, joining the Chorus
(rehearsals Tues 7-9pm, carpool from
MBV) or talking to Cathy, she can be
reached at 480-567-5495. Hey, I told
you she was one busy lady.

Don and Glenda Brandenburg are
celebrating their 60th wedding
anniversary on Sunday, April 3rd in the
Sunset Room. The festivities are
scheduled from 1pm – 4 pm and all are
welcome.
Don and Glenda have been residents of
MountainBrook since 1999. They were
married March 31, 1951, in Ohio, Illinois.
They have four children, four
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren. They still enjoy traveling
and when the Arizona temperatures rise,
they head out in their 5th wheel to enjoy
family, friends and other cooler scenic
places. They always return in October to
enjoy Village activities. Don was a featured MBV Artist of the Month in 2010 and
enjoys his woodworking. When he isn’t working on his projects, he is usually helping
the neighbors. Glenda enjoys bicycling and water aerobics.
Come help celebrate and wish them many more years of wedded bliss. No gifts
please.
