MY FAMILY ♥

For seventeen years, I have grown up into a dual-income type of a family with my mom working as an elementary teacher, and my dad as a business man. I have four siblings, and I am the eldest of them all. My younger sister is a freshman student in the college of nursing at the same school as mine; my two brothers are studying as well: the older one is a senior student at Capiz National High School and the other one is at his 5th grade in elementary; and my youngest sister is a five year old pre-schooler.

For me, it has been difficult to live in a house with seven members because I have to share a room with my sister, I even have to share parts of the food with my siblings, we keep on fighting over which TV program to watch, I need to fall in a long line before finally using the bathroom, and we always keep having a lot of quarrels and fights. But despite all these, I actually realized that I am still lucky to have them. I learned that the bright side out of having a big family is that my household chores seems to be lighter, I have someone to talk to if I have problems and I have someone to share my happiness with, and I’ll never get lonely inside the house.

One thing noticeable to my family is the very close relationship we have to each other. Even though our parents are always being, they never cease to show affection and love to us as best as they can, which made our family ties strong. We even get to joke around in some circumstances, that we even treat them as our friends that we could share our laughters and tears with.

Our parents never lack to give us our daily needs. To them, our safety and comfort is a priority. They gave us good education from a prestigious school; they sustain our daily needs, and gave us a warm and secure home to come back to at the end of the day.

Even though problems arose, we never gave up. But instead, we cope out of it with full determination, bravery and patience. I guess those are the important things I inherit from my family – the determination to strive for what I want, the patience to wait for the blessings to come back and bravery to face dilemmas, headstrong.

MY COMMUNITY

Brgy. Bolo, Roxas City. It is a big town classified as an urban area because of its vast number of population and its many sitios located through out the baranggay, and is a part of the Roxas City proper. Though is has many mountainous areas and woods, it actually has some commercial buildings located near the highway: like the National Food Authority compound, the Toyota Sales Building and the Pepsi Cola Sales Office. Some areas are also subject for development and utilization.

Cows and Carabaos are also abundant to our place, which can be found staying on vacant lots and by the riverside. It has many residents, which particularly live along the roadside. Rice is one of the main products of our baranggay together with “kamote”, “kamoteng Kahoy”, mangoes coconut products and other vegetables.

You can reach our baranggay by riding a jeepney routed to Lonoy or Bolo. It is a 30 minute drive going straight ahead. Along the way, you can pass by the Medalla Milagrosa Church of Lawa-an – it is a small, blue church located near the highway. A few meters away from Medalla Milagrosa church is the St. Ignatius Valley where you can find a huge convent hidden inside the woods. It sits on the hills of St. Ignatius Valley where its roof can be seen peeping out from the large trees of the woods. About 150 meters away is the big Iglesia ni Kristo just infront of the highway

My father, Alberto D. Durana Sr as the walls and the roof, which serves to protect the whole house, just like how our father protects us, and he makes sure that we are away from any harm and danger. He also protects us from factors that could affect our lives in the future like bad habits and vices by disciplining us well, just like how the roof protects the house from the storm. The walls also serve as the skeleton of the whole house; without the walls, the house will not stand on its own – just like how our family needed a father. Without a father, problems will occur especially in terms of money for he is the one responsible for giving us financial assistance for our everyday needs. Without the walls, our family will not stand in place.

Alicia S. Durana, My mother serves as the window of the house. She showed us how difficult and unfair life is. She gives us wisdom and knowledge to face every difficulties in life by sharing us the light that she has, just like how the window gives light to the inside of the house with its luminous presence whenever the house feels dark – like how she gave us advices when we are dealing with problems and sorrows. The window also provides warmth; like how our mother gives us his warm care that she never ceases to give us: like taking care for us when we are sick, cooking our breakfast everyday, and helping us out whenever we are too busy on our school works. Without the window, the whole house would be in total darkness.

The five of us, Me, Liz Sheena Durana, Alden Durana, Alberto Durana Jr., and Queenie Durana are the rooms inside the house which the window gives light and warmth to, and whom the roof and walls protect. I, as the elder sister, is the living room which is the first room whom the visitors enter inside the house. It is comparable to me because I am an open-minded and friendly person. I am open to be friends with everyone who are also interested to be friends with me, just like how the living room welcomes its guests.

Sheena, is the bedroom of the house because she is very up-tight and mysterious. She is not open to her problems and doubts and would often spend most of his time inside her room meditating on anything. She is also possessive and secretive, just like how the room contains many private things around the house. She also likes to sleep and relax around, just as how the bedroom serves as a resting place for us.

Alden, is the kitchen of the house because he often do the house works. The kitchen is the place for working, which resembles how hardworking this brother of mine is. He is often times messy and sweaty which is comparable to the presence of the kitchen. Alberto a.k.a. JR, resembles the dinning room because he is often times hungry and lazy. Simple things brings up his contentment that is also comparable to the simplicity of our dinning room. He is also shallow just as how shallow and small our dinning room is – which only consists of the family table, chairs and some frames s.

Queenie, the youngest is the balcony because she is always the main attraction of the house. She is very and innocent, that’s why many people like to greet and play with her just as how our guests like to stay at the balcony. Our balcony is our favorite place in the house because it is cool and relaxing at the same time: In comparison to Queenie, she is always keeps us in calm whenever we are angry. She always sees to it that we are not lonely or gloomy, which is why she is my favorite member of the family.

Component Score Justification

Adaptation 2Whenever a certain member of the family is having a problem, every one of us is trying to help out to solve that certain problem. We gain assistance from friends and agencies like the PhilHealth or GSIS whenever we are in crisis.

Partnership 1Sharing of decisions is seldom practiced by our family. We often communicate through text messages or phone calls, and we talk over things every dinner time.

Growth 1 A few things changed in our family during the past few years; whether it is a physical, emotional, or intellectual change. But, each member whole-heartedly accepted the little changes in every aspect of our lives. Our parents helped us in developing our independent lives, but we still are dependent to them in some aspects especially if we are in trouble.

Affection 2Our family shows an affectionate relationship most of the time. We share our emotions to every member of the family whether it be love, sorrow, hatred or joy.

Resolve 1We often share our time to the family at the end of the day because every one of us are busy at work or at school. But, we made sure that we have enough time to each and every one of us to share our feelings, thoughts or troubles.

THE COMMUNITY

About 5 kms from the City is a town called Bolo. A community surrounded by mountainous areas and rise fields. It is a quiet and peaceful place, good for rest and relaxation since it is away from the city. The cold breeze of the wind coming from the east can be felt anywhere, and is very relaxing especially during siesta time. There are lots of trees and rivers around our area, which is a good place to sit and relax and some children would even pick on some fruits from the trees especially during summer where mango trees began to spring delicious mangoes. In other sitios, like Nasagud and Pinaypayan, where woods are usually found occupying the most number of areas. You can see vendors roaming around our community selling vegetables usually every afternoon.

People are amiable and have a good interaction with their neighbors and even with strangers. They communicate with people through personal interaction, letter, phone call, or even via text messages. People are often times seen roaming around the neighborhood every afternoon. The Brgy Hall, which is open every morning, is always open for everyone regarding their complaints and concerns to the baranggay with the Brgy Captain entertaining every member of the society with justice and respect.
