First Sunday of Advent
W elcome! We are glad you are here to join us in worship in the celebration of the Eucharist (Mass). At the Eucharist, the Church comes together to hear the Word of the Lord, to pray for the world's needs, to offer the sacrifice of the Cross in praise and thanks to God, to receive Christ Jesus in communion, and then to
be sent forth in the Spirit as disciples of the Gospel. If you are not familiar with the Mass, the Order of the Mass can be found on pages 3-29 of the Breaking Bread hymnal. We call particular attention to the text of the Gloria on page 6 and the Nicene Creed on page 9. The scripture (Bible) readings for today's Mass can be found on page 31.

Extraordinary Jubilee - A Holy Year of Mercy - 1,000,000 Works of Mercy
On April 11, 2015, Pope Francis announced an extraor-dinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy, to highlight the Catholic Church's "mission to be a witness of mercy." Pope Boniface VIII called the first ever Jubilee Year for Catholics in 1300. However, we can trace roots of this practice to our Jewish brothers and sisters and the Book of Leviticus (25:8-17, 29-31). The Jewish tradition was to celebrate a Jubilee Year every 50 years by imitating God's mercy and forgiveness by forgiving debts and by each family returning to its own land and letting it lie fallow during that year. Since the first Catholic Jubilee Year in 1300, "ordinary" Jubilee Years have been cele-brated every 25 or 50 years. The last "ordinary" Jubilee Year was in 2000. In addition, "extraordinary" Jubilee Years like the one called by Pope Francis have been declared for special reasons. Jubilee years are a chance for extra prayer, good works, and pilgrimages to sacred places. The staff and Pastoral Council have been busy considering various local activities for the Holy Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016).
The centerpiece of our observance of the Holy Year will be 1,000,000 Works of Mercy. We will be making sure that all of our parishioners from the youngest to the old-est know what the corporal and spiritual works of mercy are and make them a habit and reality in their lives. Since the announcement and press coverage of our 1,000,000 Works of Mercy project, several parishes have contact Fr. Scott to let him know that they will be following our lead and launching a similar initiative in their parishes. Stay tuned for additional information about 1,000,000 Works of Mercy!

They make great gifts for those hard to buy for people on your list. Thank you for your continued and generous support of the Society and our commitment to help the poor in our communities.

Pilgrimage: Saints & Basilicas of Upper State NY October 3-6, 2016
Since the earliest days of our faith, men and women have found visiting the Holy Places of the world, plac-es of spiritual significance, can be life changing expe-riences. Pilgrimages take on added significance during a Holy Year like the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy announced by Pope Francis in April 2015. The Holy Year of Mercy will begin on December 8, 2015 and end on November 20, 2016. I would like to personally invite all of you to join me on an opportunity of a life-time. I am planning my own spiritual journey with a visit to “The Saints and Basilicas of Upper State NY”, October 3rd through 6th, 2016. These timeless and extraordinarily beautiful places are worth the journey to visit, regardless if it’s the first time or the fifth time! Here is an opportunity to not only renew your faith but an opportunity to be transformed by it. For more information visit our www.canterburypilgriages.com or call 800-653-0017 or stop by the parish office for a brochure. God Bless, Fr. Scott

boxes; peanut butter; fruit; tuna; and chicken canned

Local Catholic Parishes to Offer Blue Christmas Prayer Service
The Catholic parishes in Amesbury, Merrimac, New-buryport, Salisbury, and West Newbury extend an invi-tation to those who are lonely, broken-hearted or griev-ing to join us in prayer on Sunday, December 20, at 4:00 p.m. We will pray and sing together at Saint Ann Church, 300 Main Street in West Newbury. Our prayer time together will help us to feel the true meaning of love and hope that this season gives to each one of us. The Christmas Season, highlighted by the birth of Je-sus, helps us to discover hope; that light does shine in the darkness even though it may not feel like it at times.
ALL ARE WELCOME .
The Advent Wreath Opening Prayer:
O God, Bless this Advent Wreath. May it help us prepare to welcome Jesus, Your Son, into our lives. May the light of His love shine through us. Amen
Week 1 - Hope We believe in you, Lord. We know that you can help us to love and respect each other more. You are our Light, the Light that overcomes darkness. Come, Lord Jesus!
(Pause in silent prayer. Share your good deeds)

Dear Brothers and Sisters: As the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy approaches, today we consid-er the great open door of God’s mercy, symbolized by the Holy Doors which will open in Churches throughout the world. The recent Synod of Bishops on the Family encouraged families in a particular way to enter this door of mercy and to open the doors of their hearts to others. Jesus tells us that he stands knocking at our door, asking that we open it to him (Rev 3:20). How important it is for us to be good doorkeepers, capable of opening our doors and making our homes places of encounter and welcome, especially to our brothers and sisters in need! Jesus also tells us that he himself is the door (Jn 10:9) which leads to salvation; if we pass through him, we will find lasting security and freedom.
As guardians of that door, we in the Church are called to be welcoming to all who seek to enter the fold of the Good Shepherd. May the doors of our Christian homes be signs and symbols of the door of God’s mercy, a door ever open to all who knock and desire to meet Jesus.
