  • building envelope 1. Insulationa. Utilize insulating concrete forms (ICFs) not only extremely energy efficient but they do not emit V OC (volatile organic compounds)

    b. If you want batt-type insulation, try a new product made of recycled blue jeans. UltraTouch Natural Fiber Insulation by Bonded Logic is safe to handle and install, contains no formalde- hyde binders, and provides better acoustics than fiberglass.c. Other no-tox, high R-value solutions include cork and wool.

    2. Install high efficiency windows with excellent ventilation qualitiesa. Natural light is important to healthy living, vitamin D; good mental healthb. Provide fresh air lowers asthma issues.c. Utilize thermally broken multiple panes of aluminum-framed windows which have low offgasing. Ensure they have low e and are argon filled for efficiency.

    interior finishesGypsum-based drywall (also known as Sheetrock) is often not a healthy material for two reasons: (1) Adhesives and joint compounds offgas irritating fumes (including formaldehyde), and (2) Ddrywall is subject to moisture damage and mold.

    A less toxic solution is drywall primed with specialty paint or primer to seal off toxic fumes, and joined with no-tox joint and texture compound, such as Murco M-100 Ni-Po, made with inert fillers and without formal-dehyde and preservatives.

    1. Green alternatives to drywall:a. Veneer plaster is simply a layer or two of plaster installed over special drywall for a smooth, seamless, and impermeable finish. Plaster has the added advantage of blocking VOC offgassing.b. No drywall. Install wood beadboard walls; traditional, classic modern wood paneling right over wall studs. FSC certified of course.c. EcoRock drastically reduces the quantity of indoor air contaminants over any other drywall. EcoRock generates 60% less dust, and presents no negative effects of airborne mercury2. Use paints and finishes with low to no VOCsa. Paint walls and ceilings white to let light bounce around, so lights are used less; a bright space will in turn make you feel better.3. Only utilize all natural materials in the construction of floors, walls, ceilings, built-ins, fixtures, furnishings and

    accessories; zero offgasing, resistant to mould, resistant to mites, easy to clean, does not collect dust.a. FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified wood or formaldehyde-free bamboo bamboo- does not rap or harbor dust mites or molds.b. Concrete-Concrete floors and walls won't support the growth of toxic mold, they do not emit harmful VOCs.c. Cork-As a floor covering, cork is durable, provides acoustical and thermal insulation, cushions the foot, is resistant to moisture damage and decay and is easy to clean.d. Natural fiber carpeting choices include wool, sisal, jute, coir and sea grass, and backings can be made of either felt or jute.e. Wool-absorbs humidity while remaining dry, has antibacter- ial properties. Using natural wool fabrics in the home helps reduce dust mites, upper respiratory tract infections, asthma, and skin diseases.f. Marmoleum (linoleum)-Marmoleum is made with natural ingredients without any harmful VOC's or other toxic chemi- cals. The natural bactericidal properties of marmoleum prevent micro-organisms including Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus Aureus from multiplying themselves.g. Glass tiles do not offgas VOCs if water-based grout is used.h. Metal; stainless steel, aluminum, copper etc.Highly durable, resistant to mold, mildew, pollen, dust and bacteria, highly recyclable and easy to clean.

    (Avoid adhesives where ever possible, mechanically fastenor find a formaldehyde free adhesive.)

    Clean products only with organic compounds, natural soaps/ water.

    building systems1. Install a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) using exhaust air and in some installations earth tubes buried underground that pre-warm or pre-cool air before it enters the house. That equals less heat loss and cleaner air.2. Electri cal: a. Lighting-energy saving, full spectrum lamps (bulbs) provide the most natural light closest to the suns to make you feel healthier. Mental health is just as important as physical health.b. Employ low EMR (Electromagnetic radiation) wiring strate- gies and techniques throughout the home and site (for new construction).3. Install/supplement with radiant based heating/low temperature heating systems (LTH) defined as systems that use "low energy" heat sources, with heat supply elements like floor heating, wall heating, enlarged radiators/convectors, or enlarged heating coils for air heating. Produces fewer mites, fewer airborne particles, lower average air temperature thus improving the Perceived Air Quality.

    Sustainable design is vital in creatinga healthy home;

    a sustainable home will lead to a healthy life

    Homes are being built for greater energy eciency, and are more air tight but mechanical ventilation systems have remained almost unchanged. Homes are built with synthetic, man-made building materials, furnishings, and cleaning products all of which release pollutants into the air, for example: Mold, mildew, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, bacteria, and viruses. Radiation from naturally occurring radon, electromagnetic radiation from wiring and electrical appliances, and radioactive waste in some smoke detectors and compact-uorescent lamps. Gases that are released by synthetic and man-made products; formaldehyde, hexane, toluene (because outgassing decreases with time, older houses often have lower levels of VOCs than new houses)

    So, we end up with pollution-lled houses that dont have enough fresh air. The result is often ill health. Links in studies have found the following diseases; chronic respiratory disease and lung cancer, cataracts, tuberculo-sis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, in particu-lar low birth weight, ischaemic heart disease, nasopharyngeal, laryngeal cancers and increases the risk of pneumonia among children less than ve years of age.
