Living the present with passion... Welcome to the Year of Consecrated Life! October 24, 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Peace be with you! The Lord has chosen us to be consecrated from before we were born (see Jeremiah 1:5), and that consecration was brought to fruition in our Baptism. Pope Francis has declared a Year of Consecrated Life from November 30, 2014 to February 2, 2016, so that we can celebrate the gift of consecration, and especially so that we may give thanks for those women and men who have already responded to a call to a special consecration to serve God’s people in their witness of poverty, chastity and obedience. The Year is a great opportunity to foster a strong culture of vocations in our diocese, so that the Church may always benefit from the gifts and witness of consecrated persons. Our Church owes a great debt of gratitude to those who answered God’s call to serve him as Religious Sisters, Brothers, and priests. We also celebrate other forms of consecrated life: consecrated virgins living in the world and hermits. The invisible support they give us all in prayer and sacrifice cannot be measured, and we thank them for it. Our schools, healthcare institutions, social service programs, and many other ministries have thrived in their ability to serve because of the loving and faith-filled dedication of these wonderful women and men. More than what they do, however, is the witness they give. In a world that often thinks first of profits and acquiring more and more goods, they show us the joy of living simply in dependence on God. In a culture that is obsessed with sex, they show us that true and joyful love is possible in chastity. In a context where individuals are focused on themselves and their own personal choices, they show us the beauty of submitting one’s will in freedom to a community, and ultimately to the Lord, in obedience. Though the numbers of those living as consecrated persons may have diminished in recent decades, our Year of Consecrated Life can give us all the impetus to once again beg the Lord of the harvest to send out his beloved laborers, to work with our young people in discerning their vocations, and to live our lives in Christ with dedication and great joy! God bless you all! And God bless especially our consecrated sisters and brothers past, present, and future! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Larry Silva Bishop of Honolulu 1827 The Church is Born! With grateful remembrance... Did you know?... The Fathers and Brothers of the Sacred Hearts established the Catholic faith in Hawaii. From 1833 to 1940 Hawaii's first six bishops were all members of the Congregation of the SS.CC. The SS.CC. is present in 33 countries. The U.S. Province includes a Region in India, and a Mission in Tonga. Did you know?... The first 10 Sacred Hearts Sisters destined for Hawaii were lost at sea on the Marie Joseph in the year 1843 along with Bishop Rouchouze, 7 SSCC Brothers, 6 SSCC priests, and 1 sub-deacon. The second group of Sacred Hearts Sisters arrived in 1859 and founded the first school for girls at Fort Street in 1859. In 1909, they founded Sacred Hearts Academy. From 1909-1960, the SS.CC. Sisters operated a Catholic orphanage at St. Anthony’s Home, Kalihi. The charism of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts is best exemplified in their reparative adoration of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.
