Living the Lifestyle

Emotional and Mental Vitality Let’s face it: Most of us won’t be signing up to run a marathon or participate in a triathlon any time soon. The

older we get, the less likely our bodies are to handle some of the physical activity we could do as a youngster

or young adult. But don’t let that get you down. Replace the “lost” activity with something else that combines

social and physical exertion. According to WebMD.com, that’s the best way to help you keep a positive atti-

tude and sense of well-being given that emotional and mental vitality are closely tied to physical vitality.

Social contact plays a big factor in a person’s happiness. The McMinnville Senior Center offers programs that

encourage health and independence through innovative recreational, educational, health and wellness pro-

grams. The McMinnville Senior Center offers a full calendar of activities and social programs.

Here are some tips, offered by WebMD.com, to help you protect or improve your physical, social and mental

activities.

Physical activity: It is important to have some kind of physical activity

in your regular routine to protect or improve your emotional and cognitive

health. The McMinnville Senior Center offers recreation programming as

well as wellness, fitness and balance classes that fulfill this important key to

happiness. If your favorite activity was dancing but you can no longer do it,

WebMD.com suggests trying water aerobics. The McMinnville Aquatic Cen-

ter has a variety of water exercise opportunities you are encouraged to ex-

plore.

Social activity: Stay in touch with family and friends. Invite your loved

ones to participate in some of your community’s activities or have them join

you for a meal at the Wortman Park Café at the McMinnville Senior Center. For

those friends and family members who are farther away, set up regular times

to chat via email. Need some help with the computer? Take a computer class

at the McMinnville Senior Center. Another great way to increase your social

opportunities is by volunteering. Talk to a McMinnville Senior Center staff

member to find out how you can help. Older adults who regularly volunteer

generally have a greater sense of well-being than those who don’t, according

to WebMD.com.

Mental activity: Challenging your intellect on a daily basis will help you stay sharp.

Take advantage of the classes and programs at the McMinnville Senior Center to stimulate

mental activity. Or, grab a book from the McMinnville Senior Center’s well-stocked library and

discuss its contents with a small group of friends. Just like an active body, an active brain con-

tinues to thrive.

The McMinnville Senior Center strives to provide opportunities for physical, mental, spiritual,

emotional and cultural engagement in an effort to enhance the lives of guests that participate

in programs offered by the Center.

Day Trips “The Shadow” Radio Show

Arguably the most famous introduction to a

radio show ever – “Who knows what evil lurks

in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” –

launches Radio Redux’s recreation of a “The

Shadow” crime mystery drama. The radio

show’s famous introduction is now part of the

American idiom, as is the closing line, “The

weed of crime bears bitter fruit! Crime does

not pay…The Shadow knows!” Both will occur

in an episode titled “The Gibbering Things” in

which The Shadow battles a bevy of evil crea-

tures. Also on the program is the charming

radio classic, “My Client, Curley,” concerning

a dancing caterpillar named Curly who be-

comes an international show biz sensation

before nature intervenes. Lunch prior to the

show at Oregon Electric Station.
