4.5 The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are perhaps the most important rules ever written.

They were given to God by Moses.

They can be divided into two groups:

3 of them tell us how to show love for God.

7 show us how to behave towards others.

Page 6: Living the christian_life

God gave these which makes them more

important than any man-made

rules.

Keeping the Ten commandments shows respect

for God.

The laws in the U.K. And in

many countries are based on the

Ten Commandments

.

The Ten commandments reflect many problems faced by Christians today. They teach about important issues.

4.7 The Sermon on the mount and DISPLAYING RELIGION

Jesus said we should pray, but

quietly and in private

We should fast but not tell

everyone we are doing it.

We should give to charity but

privately.

Page 9: Living the christian_life

(d) “Christians should not display their religion”. Do you agree?

FOR

• Christians should show love for God, not public praise.

• Displaying religion means the only reward will be from others not God

• It’s the teaching of Jesus not to display religion

Against

• The Church encourages everyone to worship.

• The Church organises processions, e.g. Lourdes

• It is impossible to fulfil a religious duty without displaying religion

Page 10: Living the christian_life

• Others would disagree because....The Church encourages people to worship, attend church

• The church organises processions at festivals, pilgrimages to different places

• Some would agree with me because...

• Jesus said we should pray in private.....

• We shouldn’t thrive on public praise become hypocrites

Displaying religion is seen as a bad thing. Do you agree?

What did Jesus say about money?1. God will give us all we need2. The poor will be rewarded3. Do not store up on wealth on earth4. Give money in secret5. Don’t worry about food or clothes

Page 12: Living the christian_life

“Jesus’ teaching on wealth is too hard to follow”.

FOR:

• To survive in today’s world, you have to save up.

• It is hard not to want good clothes, a nice car, etc., when you are bombarded with consumer advertising.

• It is hard to share more than a small part of your wealth with the poor.

AGAINST:

• It is better to gain spiritually

than financially.

• Giving to the poor brings

rewards.

• If we trust God, he will

ensure we are secure

financially.

• It’s important that money

isn’t worshipped.

Page 13: Living the christian_life

The Golden rule and judging others

• Jesus said the rule summed up the whole of the Jewish law and the teachings of the prophets.• In the parable of the sheep and the goats, Jesus said that following this rule would gain entry to heaven.• Jesus lived by this rule. He forgave people and healed people. Christians should follow his example.• It’s a simple guide to making decisions in all situations.

The Golden rule states that “we should treat others the way we would like to be treated”.

Jesus made it clear in the sermon on the mount that this rule was very important and we should all abide by it.

How some Christians are involved in working for social justice in the Church

The Catechism of the

Church teaches that

every person has

right to food, clothing, etc.

Some Christians form their own

groups to take part in local

activities with other faiths and

minority groups to improve

the quality of life of people in

communities.

Many Christians work for social and communitycohesion by having friends from different faiths and ethnic groups.

Catholics follow in the footsteps ofJesus and go out and help peoplewho suffer e.g. SVP provides Practical Help.

Churches together promotes

Community cohesion by making

sure Catholic schools are open

to all ethnic groups
