In Celebrate Recovery, we often talk about breaking bad habits. Butrecovery ismore thanstoppingold, negativebehaviors; it’salsoabout startingnew, healthy ones. In Principle 7,we see howwe are to begin living out ourlives;we“reserveadailytimewithGodforself-examination,Biblereading,andprayerinordertoknowGodandHiswillformylifeandtogainthepowertofollowHiswill.”

Habit#1:Self-examination

“Searchme,God,andknowmyheart;testmeandknowmyanxiousthoughts.Seeifthereisanyoffensivewayinme,and

Justbecausewehavecompletedamoral inventorydoesn’tmeanwedon’tstill need to examine ourmotives and our actions.Aswewill see in the nextlesson,adailyinventoryisvitaltoourcontinuedgrowth.Thebesttoolforself-examinationisajournal.AjournalhelpsusrememberwherewehavebeenandtoseewhatGodisdoinginourlives.Itallowsustogobackintimeandclearlyrecountallofthewayswehavechanged.

InThe Journey Begins youwere introduced to the idea of journaling andeven had a seven-day challenge to help you kick-start this habit. If youcompleted that exercise andkept at it, congratulations!Youhaveundoubtedlyrecordedgreatinsightsandgrowth.Youhavelearnedthingsaboutyourselfandseenthingsinwritingthatyoumaynothaverealizedweretrue.Ifyouwerelesssuccessful in that first attempt, make this the time toget started! There are somany ways to do this daily habit. You can pick up a Celebrate RecoveryJournal, a spiral-bound notebook, or any one of the many journaling appsavailable.Itdoesn’tmatterhowyoujournal; theimportantthingisthatyoudoit!

Ifyouarestrugglingwith thishabit,goback toLesson19ofTheJourneyBeginsforhelpfultipsonhowtogetstarted.

Many people have thewrong idea about prayer. They think praying is allabouttalking.Theybegintheirtimepraying, askingGodforHiswillandforHisanswers, and say “amen” without taking the time to listen for His response!Imagine if we treated each other like that! Phase1:Complacency

Page 28: Living Out the Message of Christ: The Journey Continues, Participant's Guide 8: A Recovery Program Based on Eight Principles from the Beatitudes (Celebrate Recovery)

Relapse begins when we get comfortable. We’ve confessed ourproblem,we’ve started dealingwith it, andwe’vemade some progress.Thenwegetcomfortable,andonedaywestopprayingaboutit,andthenwestopworkingatit.Ourpainlevelhasbeenreduced—noteliminatedbut reduced—andwe thinkwecan livewith the reduced levelofpain. We haven’t thoroughly dealt with our problem, but we don’t feel asdesperateabout itasweoncedid. We thinkwedon’tneed tomeetwithoursupportgroupanymore.Wedon’tneedtoworkthechoicesanymore.Wedon’tneedtocallouraccountabilitypartneranymore.Andbeforeweknowit,wehavebecomecomplacent.

A—Available

Here’ssomegoodnews:leadersaren’tperfect;theyarejustavailable.Tobea great leader, you don’t have to have it all together. Because you are nowcompleting at least your second step study, you have been in recovery a longtime, andhaveexperiencesandvictoriestodrawonthatareinvaluablefornewparticipants. You don’t have to have all the answers; all you have to be isavailable. Leaders are available to lead groups, but they are also available tohaveconversations—inpersonandoverthephone—withthepeopletheyareserving.Ofcourse,youdon’thavetobeavailableallthetime;that’sonereasonwehavecoleadersinthegroups.

One of the key qualities of a leader is dependability. Leaders need to bepeopleotherscancounton.Thatdoesn’tmeanleadersareresponsibleforothers’doingtherightthingorthattheyneedtofixpeople.Itdoesmeanthattheyneedtodowhat they say they are going to do.Ourwalks need tomatchour talks. When a leader promises to be somewhere, he or she needs to be there. Eachweek, the group is depending on the leader being present. That’s not to say aleadercan’tmissaweeknowandthen, butheorsheneedstobetheremostofthetime, especiallyforthenewcomer.
