The Jackson Parker January 1, 2012
YOUTH IN ACTION was the title
selected for the Jackson Park Youth
Bulletin which was first published in February, 1976. Now with the last edi-
tion of that being published with the
date of January, 2012 the 36 year ser-
vice of that bulletin has come to an
end. Granville and Cliffordene Gibson
came to Jackson Park and began to be involved in the work of this congrega-
tion immediately. They
came to us from the
Chapel Avenue congrega-
tion and both of their sons were very involved with
them in the work of the
Jackson Park congregation
from the beginning. The
Let Freedom Ring Cam-
paign which was a city wide effort in 1975 had
brought several families to the congre-
gation as a result of our heavy involve-
ment in that cooperative effort. Then
in February of 1976, the youth bulle-tin was begun with the intention of
keeping the young people informed
about youth activities and providing
teaching articles, puzzles and other
entertainment for the youth. There
have been six different youth minis-ters whose names have been associ-
ated with Jackson Park during that
period of time and who have contrib-
uted articles to the bulletin. Those
men were Wayne Bailiff, Doug Foster, Tim Frizzell, Rob Hall, Lee Hickerson
and Heath Pickard.
It has been encouraging and in-
spiring to read the youth bulletin each
month and to see the personal things
like the birthdays of the young people and other information included. There
have been times when we would be
encouraged with the work of the vari-
ous youth ministers as we saw things
mentioned in the youth bulletin that
reported on various outings and un-
dertakings of the young people.
Granville has served as the editor, typist, folder and mailer of the bulle-
tins. There are youth ministers at
other congregations that have received
the bulletin and have gotten ideas
from it to be applied to their own
youth groups and congregations. To carry on a work for 36 years is com-
mendable and we appreci-
ate the work that Granville
and Cliffordene have done
with regard to the bulletin. There are numerous young
people who have benefited
from this work and we sa-
lute them for their contri-
bution to so many young
lives. Times change and tech-
nology permits young people to com-
municate in so many ways today that
were not available just a few years
ago. It is possible for young people to have in just a few seconds the infor-
mation that they need in order to
know about outings and ministry op-
portunities that were not available to
previous generations. They text each
other several times a day and do not depend on the printed page for their
information and encouragements. Let
us hope and pray that the technology
that is available today will be used in
a positive way and will help young people to draw closer together and
closer to God as a result of the bless-
ings that they have received.
Again, we thank Granville for his
commitment to all of the young people
for so many years. May each of us de-sire to develop that kind of commit-
ment to good works and to being an
encouragement to others for the doing
of good.

The Education Committee would like to wish every-one a Happy New Year on this first day of the week AND a new calendar year! With that in mind, it is also a time of new beginnings, New Year’s Resolutions, and renewing old commitments! One such personal resolution or commitment should be to regularly read God’s Word and the best way to assist in accomplish-ing that goal is to “have a plan!” Located on the front stage are at least 15 different Daily Bible Reading Plans and schedules. The plans are the same on either
side of the podium, so look them over and choose what will best accommodate YOUR daily rou-tine! Let’s DELVE into God’s Word in 2012!
We would also like to thank and recognize ALL of our many teachers who give of their time and talents to teach the many Bible classes from toddlers through adults each week, whether Sundays or Wednesdays! They are too often taken for granted! It is because of the on-going efforts and love of Christ of our teachers that so many members are edified, who then apply these lessons to their daily lives which positively affect others as the Good News is shared! Make certain that regardless of the class you attend that you express your
appreciation to that/those teacher(s) and their commit-ment to both you, as a student, and the Lord, as their Savior!

Winter Youth Series at Jackson Park Next Sunday, January 8th, @ 6 pm
Our young men are preparing to lead the wor-
ship for this special service and Steven Hayes has
agreed to lead the singing. This promises to be an
amazing time of worship. We expect to have
youth from four or five congregations with us.
For this reason, we still need your help with re-
freshments. We need more drinks (Mountain
Dew, Dr. Pepper, and Caffeine free/diet drinks),
finger foods, fruit, and veggie trays.)
2012 Mexico Mission Team Meeting An important meeting is planned for those who
plan to go on the Mexico Mission Trip. Anyone
interested in going on this trip is encouraged to
meet Sunday January 15th at 5:15 p.m. in Class-
room #4. The Mission Trip to the City of Children
and Maneadero is scheduled for Saturday, July
21st - Friday, July 27th. Information about the
cost of the trip, passports and other requirements,
schedule of future meetings and trip preparations
will be covered at this meeting. Please see Terry
Bumpus if you are interested in the trip but can-
not make this meeting.
Happy New Year! I’m always amazed at how fast an entire year just seems to come and go. Hard to believe, but 2011 is behind us and we look forward (in faith) to what the upcoming year will bring us. As you know, today starts a completely dif-ferent and new focus for us at JP. Jim and I will begin this morning with an ongoing series of lessons from scripture that should enrich our faith and under-standing. The overall theme for the year is Faith in Our Family. Specifi-cally, the idea is that all of our family units should have a strong presence of spiritual growth and faith. Together this makes the family at JP one large community of faith and practice… a family at work loving and serving to-gether. The reality is this: it’s not al-ways as easy as it sounds to foster a mature, growing faith in our homes. Truth be told our families often times hurt and struggle for lack of a substantial presence of faith in God. The same is true then for the larger community of faith that we call church. If tangible, practical faith doesn’t exist in our homes,
then it’s very likely that it will not be very evident in our church community. Sermons, classes, and worship services in general are not enough to create and sustain faith in our hearts and in the hearts of our children. It’s something that we all must choose as a very important, life fulfilling responsibility. We begin the conversation this morning together.
On Jim’s page you’ll notice a trib-ute article to Granville and Cliffor-dene Gibson. When I arrived at Jackson Park 7 years ago, it was very obvious to me that this cou-ple had a heart for helping young people discover God. I cannot express enough how helpful they both have been to me at times as I’ve made a mess out of trying to
grow and serve as a young minister. Their example of involve-ment and dedication to helping our youth ministry is hallmark. I pray for more involvement as I’ve seen in Granville and Clif-fordene Gibson. Thank you both for your time and efforts with the youth bulletin!

Shepherd’s Message...
Once again this year I have the privilege of pen-
ning the first 'Message from the Elders' for the new
year, 2012. The first Sunday of the new year has
such a 'new chapter' feel to it and at the same time
also begs for a review of the last chapter of
2011. Each year upon reflection, I am humbled by the
many blessings God has delivered and also for His
steadfastness in standing with us during hardships
such as death and loss. This year is no different. I also
think each year of the opportunity God gives us to
move into a new year with a resolve to improve on our
shortcomings. Today God allows us to do that once
again.
As we begin 2012 you will hear from Jim and
Heath about Jackson Park's theme for the coming
year - "Faith in Our Family". We have prayed about
this theme and asked God to bless each family at
Jackson Park as well as our Jackson Park family as a
whole. I hope and pray that God will bless you today
and throughout the coming year.
Please read Paul's prayer for the Ephesians and his
description of our God and Father's Family.
"For this reason I kneel before the Father, from
whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives
its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may
strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your
inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and
established in love, may have power, together with all
the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and
deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that
surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the
measure of all the fullness of God." Ephesians 3:14-19
