Living Lent – As People of the Resurrection

Good Friday – “Passion”

Peace Lutheran Church

March 25, 2016

Welcome to Peace Lutheran Church – a special welcome to our guests! This evening we remember a holy night in the history of the world — the night our Savior bled and died on a cross for our salva-tion. This is a night of reflection … on the bitter suffering our Lord endured, that He might deliver us from evil. May we all know why this terrible day is called good!

Please take some time during worship to fill out the attendance/prayer card, located at the end of each pew. If you are a guest, we would love to receive contact information so we can re-spond to your visit with us today.

CONVERGING - We come together to worship our Lord.

P: We gather to participate in the ancient Tenebrae service, the service of darkness.

C: The candles will be gradually extinguished to remind us of the gathering

darkness around Jesus as he moved through his passion to his death.

Opening Song … “Jesus Messiah” by Tomlin, Carson, Cash, and Reeves

(As we sing the opening song, please pass your attendance / prayer card to the ushers. If you are a first-time guest, please provide your contact information so that we can respond to your visit this week.)

CELEBRATING - We rejoice in what our Lord has done for us.

P: I invite you now to come and celebrate the presence of our God, Father, Son and

Holy Spirit.

C: We come as we are. Some of us had to rush to get here. Some of us have

difficulty settling down. Some of us are troubled and in the midst of trials.

Some of us feel rather empty.

P: Whoever you are, however you came, whatever you are thinking or feeling, God

welcomes you with his loving care.

C: We are ready to remember our Lord’s passion.

Page 2: Living Lent As People of the Resurrection Good Friday “Passion” … · 2017-04-13 · Living Lent – As People of the Resurrection Good Friday – “Passion” Peace Lutheran

CONFESSING - We ask forgiveness for the ways we have strayed from the Lord.

P: We pause to make confession of our sins, joining the psalmist in his prayer:

C: Have mercy on me, O God; blot out my transgressions; cleanse me from my

sin; hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a

clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Restore to me the

joy of your salvation. Amen.

CONTRIBUTING - We give of ourselves to the Lord in return for what the Lord has given to us.

OFFERING SONG … Instrumental CD

(In response to His gracious, daily provision, as an act of adoration and praise, we joyfully give back a portion of what our Lord has entrusted to us. If you are a first time guest please do not feel obligated to

contribute but you may do so as the Holy Spirit leads. May God bless every sacrifice we bring!)

CONVERSING - God speaks to us through his Word and we respond in word and song.

Message Song … “Were You There”

Message

Apostles’ Creed

Pastor: Let us acknowledge our faith by the words of the Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Responses from Isaiah 52:13-53;12

P: My servant will succeed! He will be given great praise and the highest

honors. Many were horrified at what happen to him. But everyone saw him

was even more horrified because he suffered until he no longer looked

human. My servant will make nations worthy to worship me; kings will be

silent as they bow in wonder. They will see and think about things they have

never seen or thought about before. Has anyone believed us or seen the

mighty power of the Lord in action?

C: Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground, the servant grew

up obeying the Lord.

P: He wasn’t a handsome king. Nothing about the way he looked made him

attractive to us.

C: He was hated and rejected; his life was filled with sorrow and terrible

suffering.

P: No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said, “He is a

nobody!” He suffered and endured great pain for us, but we thought his

suffering was punishment from God.

C: He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our

punishment, he made us completely well.

Page 6: Living Lent As People of the Resurrection Good Friday “Passion” … · 2017-04-13 · Living Lent – As People of the Resurrection Good Friday – “Passion” Peace Lutheran

P: All of us were like sheep that had wandered off.

C: We had each gone our own way,

P: but the Lord gave him the punishment we deserved. He was painfully

abused, but he did not complain.

C: He was silent like a lamb being led to the butcher, as quiet as a sheep

having its wool cut off.

P: He was condemned to death without a fair trial. Who would have

imagined what would happen to him?

C: His life was taken away because of the sinful things my people had done.

P: He wasn’t dishonest or violent, but he was buried in a tomb of cruel and

rich people. The Lord decided his servant would suffer as a sacrifice to take

away the sin and guilt of others.

C: Now the servant will live to see his own descendants. He did everything

the Lord had planned.

P: By suffering, the servant will learn the true meaning of obeying the Lord.

C: Although he is innocent, he will take the punishment for the sins of

others, so many of them will no longer be guilty. The Lord will reward him

with honor and power for sacrificing his life.

P: Others thought he was a sinner, but he suffered for our sins and asked

God to forgive us.

we may live before him.
