    Dear RACE Family:

As many of you know, I will be retiring effective December 30th after 5 ½ years at RACE.

My years at RACE have been happy years that I will remember fondly and I sincerely appreciate all the support provided to me during my years here at RACE.

While at RACE, I witnessed such hard working people who are so dedicated and who give so much of their time and effort to make RACE a great place to be. I am proud to have been a part of such a committed staff and I am extremely grateful for the role that everyone has played throughout my years at RACE.

While I am very excited and looking forward to this new chapter in my life, I am saddened to leave and I will miss each and every one of you.

Best wishes to all of you and thank you for your support and your friendship, which I will forever cherish.

    Love,Norma

Our best wishes go with you… May you have days full of laughter and happiness…

And may you have a lifetime full of love and dreams achieved – we will remember you.

    We miss you already!

“Bless the Beasts & the Children” as Karen Carpenter would say.

Update on Lorelei & Eva Claxton“Keeping up with school work”. Eva Claxton recently made Student of the Month at her new school in Glendora and we can see Lorelei feverishly writing an assignment and “thinking out of the box”. Keep up the good work, Mama Tiff is so proud! Thinking out of the box…..This is a metaphor that means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective. This phrase often refers to novel or creative thinking. The term is thought to derive from management consultants in the 1970s and 1980s challenging their clients to solve the “nine dots” puzzle, whose solution requires some lateral thinking.

    Lorelei Claxton

Update on Tiffany Claxton Blankets of HopeOver 200 “chemo” patients have been served with “Tiffany’s Blankets of Hope”. When Tiffany was receiving chemotherapy at the City of Hope she remarked to her sister, Julie (sidekick nurse) that it would be nice to make blankets for the other “chemo” patients. Of course, Tiff wasn’t able to complete that but sidekick Julie took the reins after her passing. Thus far it has been a miraculous endeavor.

Living it Up in SoCalRevisit: ¬Miracle Pie Baby Hobie Cruz ClarkUpdate: San Diego, CA November 6, 2015Hobie Cruz Clark, born March 14, 2015, emergency C-section has been thriving and living it up… in So Cal. Weighing in at 4 lbs, 14 oz on March 14, 2015, it only goes to show that even coming into the world with some dire circumstances doesn’t dictate how you will thrive providing that you have a loving family to nurture you. “Hobie” is out there enjoying the sights and sounds of life. Whether it’s going to “Tattoo Conventions” or meeting up with Stevie Wonder, Hobie is definitely out there. Such an adventure! Adoring Aunt, Cindy Clark, ESL Teacher

Rescues/Adoptions of Curry, Corey, and CareyMay I introduce “Curry, Corey, and Carey”. They were rescued from behind my neighbor’s shed. Actually Carey was rescued twice…long story. Anyway, more that grateful, they need a loving home. They are generous with love and affection and someone that would love them too. They are already spayed and neutered. Please be that someone. They are approximately 5 months old. They were born the week my niece Tiffany passed and Tiffany was a cat lover as well. What else can you do? Gotta rescue who you can!

  • Farewell to Joey Ramirez and Cammi Lee-NgoBy: Colleen Bridgewater

Well it has been a very sad month for me…

Two of my favorite people have gotten full time jobs and left RACE.

Joey Ramirez my Parent Ed. side kick and good friend took a full time job working for LA County as a Social Worker. The parents and kids in her classes are missing her greatly, one bit of good news is I will be taking over all 5 days teaching the Parent Education classes staring December 1st. I am really excited to be teaching in one location with my bestie Janice!

I also lost Cammi Lee-Ngo my Office Assistant for Recreation to a full time job at the same LA County Office as Joey!!! Cammi is a clerical worker in the Social Services Department! Joey and Cammi even ran into each other a lunch last week…Crazy!

Although I’m sad and feel like I have been deserted, I am really happy for both of them and wish them the very best in their new career paths!

    RACE STAFF CELEBRATES HALLOWEEN!

The Parent Education classes came by our front office trick or treating. The staff enjoyed handing out candy and treats to the children for five days.

CONDOLENCESOur condolences go out to Joe King and his family. His mother, Evangeline King passed away on October 4, 2016.

“Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy”.

WELCOME BACK ELEANOR WEISMILLERMrs. Weismiller has returned to RUSD as the new aide for the GED and High School Diploma class at AEC2. Dance is LifeBy: Jessica Marin

“I can’t…I have dance” is probably one of the most appropriate quotes to explain my daughter, Hanna’s life. At the age of 2 ½ , I enrolled Hanna for her first dance class at Fine Arts Academy of Dance for one hour a week. Little did I know that the dance studio would be Hanna’s second home. While it’s true that Hanna has to miss events because of her dance training, there is nothing she rather be doing than dancing.

It has been said many times that dance is a way of ex-pression, or the soul’s way of communicating. Though this may be true, there is so much more to dance than communication. Through-out Hanna’s life, dance has taught her determination, perseverance, how to reach towards a goal, and how to work as a team. Most of all, dance has taught her about having a passion. Hanna has learned that being frustrated is ok sometimes as long as it pushes you to become the best dancer possible.

Hanna performed in a ballet performance of “Cinderella” at the Bridges Audi-torium located at the Claremont Colleges on November 15, 2015. She plans on continuing with dance and is very excited to grow as a dancer.

New Additions!By: Janet Duker, ASE Teacher

This year my family was blessed with not one, but two new grandchildren! Both of my sons and their wives welcomed new baby boys into their families. Ethan Nathaniel was born on February 11 to Steven and Diana Duker, and Gavin Michael arrived on September 22 to first time parents Michael and Lauren Duker. Both babies are doing well, as are their sleep-deprived, but happy, parents.

Surprise...Surprise...Surprise....!!! Sometimes, being caught off guard, like being surprised can really be uncomfortable but it also can be a good thing, right? Some of you might remember my daughter Kristen because she worked for a few months here at RACE in 2007. After graduating from UCLA in 2010, Kristen who has always loved traveling, made the decision to travel to the other side of this planet. Surprise! Mom, I’m moving to Swaziland. Who? What? When? Where? Why? Bulembu is a town in Swaziland, Africa with heart and a vision. In 2001, the mining company that had built and operated Bulembu for more than 60 years, closed its doors and walked away. With no jobs the town was soon abandoned, even as Swaziland continues to be ravaged by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the resulting orphan crisis.

With much anxiety and hesitation, sadly we sent her off into the unknown only knowing a little about the place, Bulembu. Her journey took well over 30 hours but once settled, she met the orphan kids which became obvious to her that is where she needed to be. How did I know that she would be there for over 4 years. She has been a volunteer teacher in the primary school, teaching mathematics for grade 7 and music for grades 4 through 7. I thought she would return this December for good and pursue a career here. Surprise! Surprise! Not only will she be coming home with her 2 huge pieces of luggage she will be bringing home a tall 6’1”guy named Ben. Ben, originally from Edmonton, Alberta, went to Bulembu as a civil engineer where he planned on volunteering for a year. They were able to instantly bond over their love for hockey, despite the fact that they are loyal to division rivals. Their time spent together grew from a few minutes chatting about hockey to hours which turned into days and weeks. In Ben’s words, “We have a strong relational foundation built on our common faith, and we are beyond excited to see what we can accomplish together from here on out.”

Ben called to ask us for our permission for Kristen’s hand as he could not imagine his life without her. He told us how he planned the perfect place and day that he would propose. On June 19th, Ben asked Kristen for her hand in marriage in front of a warm fire in the cozy kitchen of their friends (surrounded by 4 barking Yorkie’s that Kristen was dog-sitting). Unfortunately, this proposal scenario was not ideal due to a multitude of reasons. So one month later Ben was able to very skillfully work in a second proposal, which took place at the highest point in Bulembu, looking out into the mountains of South Africa on one side and over the village of Bulembu on the other. She said yes twice! We haven’t met Ben but have had several conversations with him so we know that Ben has made Kristen very happy and he’s been very good to her. We are anxious to welcome them as they will be arriving soon. It’s been a quick rush to find a venue for their wedding, but things are falling into place. The rush was due to the fact that they had tickets to return to serve in Bulembu as a married couple. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! They’ve decided to postpone their ministry and find a suitable place to live in Vancouver where Ben’s former employer has offered him his job back. They’re getting married on December 6th and will leave for Canada a few days after. It’s been a challenge to put together a wedding in less than six months but on the positive side, I’ll be able to visit her in Vancouver which is so much better than flying to South Africa. I’m not a fan of flying. All in all, surprises can be good and in this case, it’s more than good, it’s been GREAT!!!
