• Beihai Imperial Garden

• Beihai (North Sea) Park is one of the most popular parks in the city of Beijing. It covers a total area of over 68 hectares, more than half of it is taken up by the lake. Early in the 10th century, the Liao Dynasty built a secondary imperial residence here, called Yaoyu or Jade Islet. When the Jin took over, they renamed the capital Zhongdu, meaning Central Capital, and built an imperial palace. Qionghua (Jade Flowery) Is let was built of earth dug out from the lake, and the rocks used for piling on the hill were brought from Kaifeng, Henan Province. During the Yuan Dynasty, the place was rebuilt three times, and Guanghandian or the Palace in the Moon where Kublai Khan used to live and many other palace buildings were built on top of the hill. It was in this palace that Kublai Khan received Marco Polo. Unfortunately it was destroyed. The Islet became the centre of Dadu (Great Capital) and is still situated in the heart of modern Beijing.

• Golden Hill Imperial Garden

The Coal Hill Park lies right to the north of the Palace Museum. It used to be a private garden of the imperial family. When the Imperial Palace was built in the early Ming Dynasty, the earth excavated to make the moat was piled up, and five peaks took shape. The Coal Hill Park was opened to the public in 1928. After liberation, the buildings were renovated and flowers and fruit trees were planted. The Hall of Imperial Longevity was turned into a Children's Palace. Now the Coal Hill Park has become one of the popular holiday resorts for the people of Beijing.

• Beijing Panda Zoo

• One of the most famousmammals in china, thegiant panda is meek and looks like a bear. With the exception of its shoulders, its limbs and the rims of its ears and eyes which are black, this lovable animal is white all over. Statistics show that China now has only approximately l,000 giant pandas living in the wild, in some remote mountain areas of Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces.

• The Ruins of Old Summer Palace • Yuanmingyuan or the Garden of

Perfection and Brightness, located on the northwestern outskirts of Beijing, is one of the five famous gardens built during the Qing Dynasty. With its charming landscape and numerous springs, the area has always been the site of gardens and parks. Some Western-style buildings were constructed in the northeastern corner of the garden. Built mainly of stone and in Renaissance style, the buildings were decorated with glazed-tiled roofs. Unfortunately, when the Anglo-French forces invaded Beijing in 1860, the whole grounds were set on fire. In 1900, Yuanmingyuan was again plundered by two Allied Forces of the Eight Powers. Warlords and bandits stole or destroyed what was left. A museum has been set up showing the history of Yuanmingyuan and plans for its future restoration.

gongfu show

• Chinese Gongfu. or Wushu, or martial arts, has been practiced for several thousand years by people in China for physical training and self-defense. It is practiced in various types of set exercises, either empty-handed or with weapons. Taijiquan is a branch of Chinese martial arts with a history of three or four hundred years. It grew out of the health maintenance exercises of ancient Taoism combined with the theories of yin and yang and main and collateral channels. It originated in Chenjiagou in Wenxian County, Henan Province. There are different schools, including the Chen style, Yang style, Wu style and Sun style. In this art it is essential that the mind guide the body's movements and, at the same time, follow the body's graceful, gentle and firm movements. GongFu, is a Chinese term meaning skill developed through work over time. Martial arts in ancient times was referred to as WuShu. In modern times gongfu has come to refer to martial arts but is still used to refer to other arts that require diligent practice, for instance a chef can also have deep gongfu.

puppet show Puppet Show is at the forefront of the long-time underground revolution known to its constituents as "Progressive Rock", or "Prog"... but their music transcends these boundaries into mainstream rock and beyond. Hailing from the heart of the "Silicon Valley" in Northern California, Puppet Show plays in the spirit of '70's classic progressive bands, but with an updated, modern sound. They combine rich melodies with odd meter and textured vocals to create a sound which appeals to fans of both classic and modern prog. Their sound has drawn widespread comparisons... "Puppet Show is very difficult to categorize, but I suppose they could be summarized as symph prog with a large helping of attitude and aggression. I would not go as far as to say that they are a prog-metal band. Fantastically furious and complex one moment, subtle and contemplative the next; they avoid the primary weaknesses of the metal genre, such as overly crunchy and unrelenting guitar assaults. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon composition, which really keeps the epic works together and tight. Puppet Show will especially appeal to fans of progressive music who wish to hear more power and energy in their music, but are tired of bands being "something else" first, and progressive as an afterthought."

EntertainmentsShadow Plays

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wudi (156-87 B.C.) of the Western Han Dynasty was very depressed with the death of his favorite concubine, Lady Li. To help him get over his sadness, Minister Li Shaoweng made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the lady and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some consolation. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover's spirit. Today, this is thought to be the beginning of the shadow show puppetry. Illuminated puppet figures manipulated by three to five artists using a transparent white cloth screen now form an artistic combination of opera, music, fine art and special craftsmanship. The shadow shows became quite popular as early as the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when holidays were marked by the presentation of many shadow plays. During the Ming (1368-1644), there were 40 to 50 shadow show troupes in the city of Beijing alone.

• Acrobatics • The Chinese acrobatics has a long history and rich national flavor. It is one of the

art forms most popular among the Chinese people. In a broad sense, acrobatics is the collective name of various kinds of feats. In the primitive society, acrobatics was closely related with music and dance, and became dominant of cultures at that time. The history of acrobatics in China can be traced back to Neolithic times. It is believed that acrobatics grew out of the labor and self-defense skills that the people practiced and demonstrated during their leisure time. In the Variety Show of the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) and performances in the imperial court of the Tang Dynasty (618-907),acrobatics was very prosperous just like music and dance. After the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, acrobatics together with classical dances were looked down upon. However, some superb feats of the previous dynasties were still handed down to the later generations and got much improvement. Chinese acrobatic art spread to overseas and enjoyed a good reputation at the late years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the early years of the Republic of China (1912-1949). In the Qin Dynasty (221-207BC), Jiaodi Drama (a drama that incorporates an ancient wrestling skill), originally popular among ordinary people, was introduced to the imperial court. Jiaodi Drama developed into a variety show of various music-dance acrobatics, including juggling sword, handstands, walking on the robe, feats on horseback, climbing poles, fighting with animals, and so on in the Han Dynasty.

Sanlitun South Area

A few minutes west of bar street and to the south you will find another small street which looks like it just has one bar because of a bend in the road. This street is sometimes mistakenly referred to as "South Sanlitun Bar Street". In fact, its real name is "Dong Da Qiao Xie Street". It now is filled with another long line of bars. It is famous for being a little less upscale, (and therefore cheaper), than the Northern Street. The bars here, with a few exceptions, tend to be really small. If you want to bump into people (literally), then this is probably the place to hang out. Names here include, Minder, Hidden Tree, Nashville, Black Sun

Sanlitun Central Area

At first glance this part seems to have nothing much, just a sprawling business district with hotels and shopping malls. There is however, much to be seen here. Opposite the Great Dragon Hotel you can find a small line of notable bars, including the Power House, and hidden behind the Comfort Inn is one of the most famous and popular discos in Beijing, Rock & Roll, together with the Loft. On the way to the workers stadium near the City Hotel is another group of bars including the Den (disco and bar) which continues to be popular with foreign expats and tourists.

Travel by Train

Taking the train in China is an experience not to be missed. You can meet people from all over the country, and the views out of the train windows are unavailable in any other form of travel.

The city has five railway stations, with lines running to almost all provincial capitals, and to all China's major cities. There are four kinds of seats available-soft berths, hard berths, soft seats and hard seats. If you are headed for any destination which has a travel time of over 6 hours. You should definitely try to get a soft seat car. Any trips over 12 hours and a hard or soft sleeper is a must. Soft sleepers are more comfortable, but offer a more isolated (some would say private) train experience. most over-night trains have dining cars. And if you really can't find a seat or bunk anywhere, you can usually pay a small amount to spend the night in the dining car. It is a good idea to bring your own food. Instant noodles, fruit and sausages are what most people bring. Hot water is available on board.

Beijing's West Railway Station is Asia's largest rail terminal and is very modern and well-equipped.

For any information call 65129525(Beijing Railway Station, Chinese language only), or 63216253(Beijing West Railway Station, Chinese language only

Public TransportationTrain Ticket Booking

It is more convenient to have the hotel travel service or front desk buy you a train ticket (for a small service charge ) as it can sometimes be confusing and time-consuming to book by yourself. Beijing Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station have a special counter selling tickets to foreigners and overseas Chinese. Tickets can be purchased up to six days in advance.

It is necessary to show your passport ID when booking or buying tickets.By dialing 65634672(Chinese only )from 18:00 to 21:00 four days before your

departure date, you can book your ticket by phone for any train leaving the old Beijing, the best bet is to have your hotel send a shuttle bus to have your hotel send a shuttle bus to come and get you.

Public Transportation

Taxis

As a convenient means of transportation in Beijing, taxis are patrolling the streets or waiting at the airport, railway stations, hotels, and tourist destinations 24 hours a day. Luxury sedan taxis cost 12 yuan for the first four kilometers and add 2 yuan per kilometer thereafter.

• The common small sedan taxi, usually with red color , costs 10 yuan for the first 3 or 4 km kilometers and 1.2 to 1.6 yuan for each additional km. You can see the price at the window of door of taxi, 1.2/km or 1.6/km. A taximeter is fitted to each taxi to automatically computer and indicate the fare due.

It is wise to remind the driver to use the meter (da biao). Receipts are provided if requested. Few cabbies speak English so it is advisable to have destinations written out beforehand in Chinese. Average fare from the Capital International Airport to a downtown hotel is 80 yuan.

SubwaySubway construction started in China's capital in 1965. The first stretch, which opened

between the city's railway station and Pingguoyuan, included today's western branch of Line 1 and the southern part of Line 2. In 1987, the circular line was finished (16 km) and both lines started operating separately. In the 1990's an eastern extension of Line 1 was built, the so-called Fu Ba Line, to Sihuidong (formerly shown as BA Wang Fan) opened for trial in Oct. 1999 for the People's Republic's 50th anniversary. The new section (13.5 km) was eventually connected to the western section of Line 1 on 24 June 2000 which had been upgraded to ATO operation. Now there are talks about a further extension to the east.

The entire Line 1 from Pingguoyuan to Sihuidong is now 38 km long and provides transfer to Ring Line 2 twice, at Fuxingmen and at Jianguomen. Ring Line 2 is 16 km, so the total network operating in 2000 is 54 km. Most stations have central platforms and are 118m long, but only 10 have escalators. 4 or 6-car-trains are used, which are equipped with acoustic station announcement. For future extensions of the network (8 lines) some stations have already been built as transfer stations: Xizhimen, Dongsishitiao, Jianguomen, Yonghegong and Jishuitan.

Construction of "CityRail" (Line 13 in the overall "rapid transit" planning) started in December 1999. The semicircular line with 16 stations runs from Xizhimen to Dongzhimen(both are stations on the circle Line 2). The 40.8 km line is mainly above ground, either elevated (7.7 km) or at grade (30.3km). After the western section (20.6km) went into operation on 28 Sept. 2002, the eastern section will be opened in January 2003.

Public Buses

Besides bicycles, public buses are the cheapest way to get around Beijing. The trick is to find the right line to get where you want to go often you have to change buses several times. Which is time-consuming and confusing. The public bus system in Beijing is very good. In that you can get almost anywhere by bus. But the downside is that they are really, really crowded and uncomfortable, also, watch your wallet when you get on the bus. pickpockets frequent bus stops and get your stuff just as you are getting on. There are two types of buses; the ancient, two-segment, and the modern, air-conditioned buses which are a blessing in the summer.

Bikes

If you are in Beijing for an extended period of time, you may want to consider buying a bike. Biking around Beijing is a fun way to get to know the city. Also , there are rarely bike jams (though they have been known to occur). You haven't really experienced Beijing until you have ridden alongside a three wheeled platform bike loaded sky high with chunks of Styrofoam, or had a near miss with a guy in a three-piece suit pedaling furiously to get to work. Amazingly enough, nobody wears bike helmets, except for the Domino's Pizza guy on his way to a delivery! There are all different price ranges for bikes. Cheap Chese-made bikes go for around US$30,but you also can get American mountain bikes like cannon dales or Diamondbacks for several hundred Us dollars. Mountain bikes are cool, but actually unnecessary as Beijing is an extremely flat city.

Public TransportationCars

Cars in Beijing are very expensive. If you buy a foreign import, you have to pay about 100-150%import tax on the car so the price is basically double of that abroad. Joint-ventures like Audi are also more expensive than they are overseas. Chinese -made vehicles are cheaper, but the quality is not exceptionally good. The best plan is to rent a car.

Rickshaws When you hear the word rickshaw, you may think of the two-wheeler carts pulled

around by Chinese guys with long braids that you see in old movies. But today, rickshaws are actually three-wheeler bicycles often driven by old- retired men. There are fleets of them circling around the tian'anmen square area, and they are always willing to take passengers. It is mice to take a ride around the square in the evening, but if you do, make sure you come to a price agreement first. There are many con-men out there, and you have to be firm and clear about your price. there is no set fee for a ride, so you just have to decide how much you are willing to spend, and work with that, they usually ask for about 30 to 50 yuan.

The other are to take rickshaw rides is by the north gate of Beijing Park. This is the hutong (alleyway) tour, in which you will by full 200 meters west, and when you see a long line of rickshaws that are identical, you are there.
