Worship Team Meeting

The Worship team invites everyone to come to the monthly pot luck and meeting on November16th after the 10:30 am service. We will have a pot luck lunch and the

topic of the meeting will be preparing for and decorating for Advent. Advent is the period pre-ceding the Christmas season. Advent begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St Andrew the Apostle and covers four Sun-days. This year Advent begins on November 30th. Please come and help us plan the decorating and greening of the church. Bring a side dish or des-sert to share with the group, approximately 10 people. Everyone who volunteers as usher, reader, prayer leader, communion assistant, prayer inter-cessor, altar guild and/or hospitality is encouraged to attend Worship meetings.

Also all volunteers are requested to arrange a substitute if they cannot attend the church service they are scheduled to help out at. A list of substi-tutes is on the back of the Volunteer schedule you receive in the mail. Lin Williams, Team Leader Jan Rudolph, Council Representative

MARRIAGE AFFIRMATION SERVICE UP-DATE

Seven couples participated in our annual Marriage Affirmation service last month. Over 50 invited family and friends of the couples enjoyed the service and the champagne toast and desserts after the ceremony. Everyone expressed their thanks to Pastor Rich and the Worship committee for a memorable time. One of the couples celebrated their 50th anniversary this year; others ranged from 40 to10 years of marriage. This is a joyous celebration of togetherness and commitment. Please plan to participate next year.

Dear LGLC, This month we elect a new president. Regardless of the outcome, history will be made this month. We will either see the first black man elected as president, or the first woman elected as vice president. Considering where this young nation of ours was with matters per-taining to civil rights only a few generations ago, this is extraordinarily good news. Had this election been held within a time of relative prosperity and peace the out-come of this election may well have been anticipated with an unprecedented amount of pride and patriotism. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Instead of pride and patriotism, our nation is enduring what many are saying are some of the darkest days of our nation’s history. I find it quite sad that in a time when our world has seen the leaders of other nations ignore the truth, and disre-gard human dignity and life in pursuit of personal or national dominance, our nation can’t seem to find any-thing to be thankful about. Russia’s leadership behave like the communists of the past. Zimbabwe’s “president” got away with terrorizing those who would have unseated him in a so-called democratic election. Iran’s president was praised by his people for calling the Nazi Holocaust a myth. The list of global leadership atrocities is lengthy. Here in the US, we have lots of reasons to be discontent, and all of the reasons have us pointing fingers at the president. For good reason, I sup-pose. But, is our nation really as bad off as the pundits would have us believe? I don’t see too many of us emi-grating to some other country. I think there’s a lot to be thankful for in the USA. But, regardless of what I think, there is still a high level of fear and loathing among us. Take the fear that prompted the cartoon on the left, for instance. We seem to be a nation terrified that our politics as usual might yield the same result as that of the past. It’s no wonder both can-didates campaigned with promises either of change or reform. Now I realize that many in this country are enduring harder financial times than we have in the re-cent past, and I know that many are still fighting a war in Iraq, but even so, is all this fear and loathing really nec-essary? There is a great deal of fuel thrown upon this fire of fear over the presidential race coming from the pundits on either side of the race. The Democrats want the world to be afraid of what might happen if the Re-publican wins, and Republicans want the world to be afraid of the opposite. Meanwhile, we citizens are left frightened about something no matter who we elect. Our nation needs a good dose of Psalm 46. The Psalm quoted on the right reminds us who is truly in charge, and it encourages us to be not afraid. Instead, “be still, and know that I am God” is the invitation. With these words of promise from God calming our souls and en-couraging our consciences, we can elect a president

while resisting the temptation of this unpatriotic fear and loathing. With God’s promise in our hearts we might actually elect a president and be thankful about doing so. As this nation moves forward with a newly elected president, let us do so with all the reasons for fear and loathing on the one side held in check on the other side by our faith in the Lord of Hosts who is with us; the God of Jacob who is our refuge. Blessings of thankfulness this November,

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in

the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble

with its tumult.

There is a river whose streams make glad the

city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the city; it shall not be moved;

God will help when the morning dawns.

The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;

he utters his voice, and the earth melts.

The LORD of hosts

is with us; the God of Jacob

is our refuge.

Come, behold the works of the LORD;

see what desolations He has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow,

and shatters the spear; He burns the shields with fire.

Be still,

and know that I am God!

I am exalted among the na-tions, I am exalted in the

earth."

The LORD of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Every other Sunday, youth from grades 5-12 are invited to come to the JAM SESSION. Here we will have fun and make friends. Most importantly, we will grow closer to Jesus in faith through weekly devotions. And, active J.A.M.mers get to participate in special monthly events for free. Grades 5-8 will be among our Jr. Hi Youth. They will get the opportunity to participate in activities that are age ap-propriate and assist them with the topics they need to know for their confirmation of faith at the end of 8th grade. Grades 9-12 will be among our Sr. Hi Youth. They will get the opportunity to participate in activities and discussions that help them to bring their faith to action in love and service. How do I become a J.A.M.mer? 1. There are flyers and registration

forms available at the church. 2.There is a donation request of $30 for each registration. This is per year, and helps to provide a fund from which a variety of program expenses can be drawn. We also ask that each J.A.M.mer practice good financial stewardship by setting aside a small donation for each week. 3.Come as often as you can. Abide by the behavior covenant. HAVE FUN!
