Knowledge and Philosophy

As we evolve, so too does our knowledge base. Your life

requirement is that you specialize in a field or some

form of knowledge, ideally one in which you can

become a leading expert.

There are enough fields for all of us to become

has no value.”




When endeavoring to make a difference in your

specialty, aim to become the very best. Explore this

specialty with the goal of knowing everything that is

possible. Then organize that knowledge for others.

Just having knowledge is not sufficient. You must

In today’s world of technology, we have many new

choices on how we can transmit knowledge, or we may

choose some of the more traditional ways.

Any method will work to one degree or another.

Just a few years ago the transmittal of information in

digital formats was not understood. Today it is

commonplace.




Here, the secret is for you to transmit the

information by teaching it verbally or in writing. Then

capture this information in a viable media format that

can be passed along to future generations.

To do this, your life must take the form of teacher,

lecturer, professor, scientist, presenter, speaker, writer,

or author.

There are many professions that fit into this

category.

As you set out to share your specialized knowledge,

you also must be able to present it in a way that catches

the eyes of others.

How many great thinkers have gone unnoticed

because they did not market themselves?

Find a medium that will expose your expertise to

others. Find experts in that medium who not only can

help you present it but also can create demand for your

knowledge.




When delivered effectively, your concepts and ideas

will shape the thinking of people for years to come. You

will be recognized as a sought-after authority in your

field of expertise.

Think of the great impact that we can have by

making one advance in science or technology.

Edison lives on in the light bulb and the

phonograph.

Einstein lives on in his contributions to the General

Theory of Relativity.

Socrates and Aristotle were immortalized for their

contributions to philosophy.

Benjamin Franklin contributed to our knowledge of

electricity.

Henry Ford made his immortal mark in developing

an efficient method of mass production.

can outlive us.

This arena includes all the various art forms. The

world of art is vast, including music, painting, singing,

and leave an indelible impression that lasts for

generations.

Today the world still marvels and wonders at the

music of Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel; the paintings of

Lloyd Wright; the sculpture of Michelangelo; and the

literature of Homer, Dumas, and Dickens.

In order to create a legacy at the highest level, you

must become a well-known expert in your chosen art

Organizational Leadership

People gather to work and live together in a variety of

organizations.

Families are organizations. Companies are

organizations. Religions are organizations.




All come together for some common purpose and

are organized to achieve that purpose.

How well those organizations are put together can

create a legacy beyond the life of the organizer or

organizers.

You can live a life that will stretch out long beyond

your life by creating an organization that can impact the

lives of others today and into the future.

Even though the players in the organization may

Some of the most profound leaders to do this were

the originators of the United States Constitution.

Drawing on lessons learned from the English Magna

Carta, the writers of the Constitution created a

document that captures the great principles of governing

law. These truths that were documented in the

Constitution have lived well beyond the founders’ years

and have provided a model for dozens, if not hundreds,

of other governments and organizations. The

Constitution has now positively impacted the lives of

millions, if not billions, of people for more than 200

years.

On a smaller scale but equally as profound in

liberating the lives of individuals is the family. The

parent or parents of great families, like the authors of

the United States Constitution, have sought out

organizing truths that establish the foundation of their

leadership. Those truths, when implemented, have

created families of enduring value, measured not only by

the members of that family but also by other families

and individuals who have associated with them.




Today’s high-impact organization is “the company.”

Billions of people each day participate in companies in

order to produce products and services for their

customers and create value for the people in the

company.

Company leaders hugely impact how well these

organizations succeed in creating value for the end user,

for the organizer, and for the people working in the

company.

Great companies such as Toyota, the Ritz-Carlton,

General Electric, and Boeing, and others provide jobs

products, and services that far surpass the lives and

contributions of their founders.

In order to live a life that will outlive you as a leader,

you must find the enduring principles of organization

that will be embedded in the DNA of the organization

you build and put in place enduring structures and

systems that do not require you for their value to

manifest.




Politics and Social Activism

Another contribution that can outlive you is your role in

politics and social activism.

Leadership is needed in our world now as never

before.

Gandhi became immortal through guiding India to

freedom from British rule.

Churchill became immortal for inspiring the British

people to courage during World War II.

Martin Luther King made his name in the non-

violent fight for civil rights.

What causes will you champion?

It is no longer enough for us to leave the mantel of

leadership in our societies to others.




People like Al Gore have shown that we can

sometimes have great influence by merely calling

people’s attention to a problem in need of solution.

Nelson Mandela showed us moral courage in the

creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Whether your leadership role is formal or informal,

we are all called to politics in one form or another, for

politics determines the policies by which our nations

and our world will be led.

And our participation or apathy will outlive us in

determining what kind of a world we leave behind for

our children.
