It seems so obvious you wonderwhy it took so long for someoneto come out and do it. As anincreasing number of carmanufacturers have gone super

green with hybrid models, all havecombined an electric motor with apetrol engine.

Peugeot, however, has made thelogical move and used the mostfuel-efficient type of combustionengine – diesel.

Result is the world’s first dieselelectric car, the Peugeot 3008Hybrid4, and it has the potential toreturn up to 74 miles per gallon –fantastic for a substantial andspacious five-seater family vehicle.

This year is one of hugeimportance to the brand with thelion badge because no sooner willthis latest model have hit the streetsin March than Peugeot will belaunching another hybrid, theflagship 508 RXH crossover.

And with city slicker the 107already revamped for 2012,mid-summer will see themuch-vaunted 208 supermini floodthe forecourts.

For now though the 3008 Hybrid4is the centre of attention with thepromise of actually being four carsin one - a zero emission electricvehicle, an economic family car, a4x4 and a 200bhp performancehatchback.

It uses a 2.0-litre diesel engineproducing 163bhp to drive the frontwheels and a 37bhp electric motorto power the rear and is fitted witha six speed, semi-automatic gearboxwhich can be operated manually viasteering wheel mounted paddles ifneeded.

Key to the Hybrid4 is aningenious drive set-up whichcalculates when the car should beusing just the diesel engine, onlythe electric motor or the best ofboth to provide the optimumeconomy or performance.

There are four operating modes,accessed via a rotary dial on thecentre console, comprising Auto –best for everyday conditions – ZEVelectric mode for zero emissions,Four-wheel Drive in which bothpowertrains operate together forall-terrain grip, and Sport mode forquicker gear shifts and moredynamic punch.

Peugeot’s launch route was

designed to test the 3008 in all typesof conditions, starting from a citycentre multi-storey in spookilysilent electric drive – available up to40mph depending on throttle action– before the auto kicks in.

You can manually flick the dial toSport on the move, and feel the carspring into overdrive, to summonthe full 200bhp punch on fast roads.

And the exercise finished with arutted off-road circuit that includeda quite steep hill made all the moreslippery by torrential rain, followedby a drive through a safari park.

At no point did the Hybrid4

struggle – not even when confrontedby a 14-strong pride of lions.

To keep the driver in the picture,the dashboard display tells youwhere the power is coming from atany given time and how muchcharge there is in the battery.

Unlike pure electric vehicles theHYbrid4 doesn’t need to beconnected to the mains to keep thebatteries alive, so should they getlow the alternator feeds in powerfrom the diesel engine.

Official figures show that the carcan return up to 74.4mpg Combined,accelerate from 0-62 in 8.5 seconds

and speed on to a top speed of118mph.

Stylish looks apart, the 3008 is animpressively comfortable yetdynamic car to drive, boasts asuperior quality and well laid outinterior, while there’s ample spacefor five adults – including in thecentre rear position.

Peugeot expects to sell around2,000 Hybrid4 models a year, some85 per cent of them to the fleets andbusiness users, who are wellfavoured by the tax situation of noVED and a Benefit in Kind rating of10 per cent due to the car’s hybrid

rather than diesel status.Prices for the pair of available

models aren’t cheap though, theentry grade 99g/km version costing£26,950 and the higher grade model,complete with larger alloy wheelswhich pushes up its CO2 output to104g/km, costing £28,495.

The latter, the tested model, alsohad leather seats for another £1,050plus £370 panoramic glass roof,though the car does come with satnav and a useful head up display asstandard. There’s also a five-yearwarranty on both the battery andelectric motor.
