low sticks, Vicks VapoRub, tops off, dancingon podiums for hours, sharing chewys,

hugging total strangers and more arms in the airthan a deodorant advert. Do you rememberyour old skool? No, not your juniors but the oldraving days at some of the old clubs that are nolonger with us. It only seems like yesterday Iwas spinning Robin S to a locked out Statenightclub on Dale Street, queuing up at 8.30pmto guarantee my place on the dancefloor at theQuadrant Park in Bootle or throwing flowers totwo thousand clubbers in the Ofiveone. Yes theclubs may come and go but the memories neverfade. I am so lucky to have been part of thehouse music phenomena when it came andtook over our lives. I am also very lucky to still bepart of the scene so to all those who havesupported me, a big thank you. I look forward toseeing you on the dancefloor. Keep on clubbin!

ho would ever thought I would be askedto do a write up for a magazine! Well I

have and I am really excited about it. So whereshall we begin? Not been accustomed to puttingpen to paper I think for those who don’t knowme from being a nocturnal heathen I should giveyou a little bit of background my last 25 years.

Where it all began: When I left school I alwaysremember my English teachers saying to me“Good Luck You’re going to need it”. Keep in

mind when you’re just sixteen as I was at the time, that’s like being given your first ever skateboard, then just before you jump on for the ride of yourlife you find out someones robbed the wheels! So I gathered from his hand shake and crudeintroduction to rest of my life I was not muchgood academically, but he was wrong! Verywrong!! I had a passion long before I left schooland it was this passion that carved out mycareer… music.

In school our music lessons were a waste of time.Who was ever going to get a job playing theBagpipes or the Triangle? They wouldn’t let menear the drum kit, just Three Blind Mice on theFlute which I mastered to a fine art! But still to thisday I have never been asked to give my renditionof it at any interview I’ve had since, shame I reallyrock it as well.

So I learnt very quickly the most important ten‘two letter words’ of life;

‘ If it is to be...it is up to me!’I started my musical journey collecting seven inchsingles some of you reading this won’t have aclue what I am talking about here but keep withme I will get you up to speed… LOL! I would takemy little Amstrad Hi-Fi to street parties, my matesand family Birthdays and I even played at a gymin Widnes once, very random. Basically anywherethat I could roll up to play, I always rememberwhat music did, it would transform people andwould take us to another place, it was escapism.

It wasn’t long before I was collecting glasses insome of the biggest night clubs in Liverpool andseeing first hand just how powerful music wasand could be. It was a world away from Anfieldwhere I grew up as a kid, this was almost like afantasyland with its own musical family.

Everyone would come together every Saturdaynight and have the best nights of their life. Theatmosphere was electric, the speakers weredeafening, and the lights painted this surrealback drop to it all. This was it, this is what mademe tick.

I was a joiner by day and nocturnal trooper bynight, every bit of cash went on buyingequipment, amps, lights, I started doing mobilediscos. Some were off the hook and a few wereanything but. I got a booking for this fiftiethwedding anniversary in Walton above a pubonce. It would be fair to say my music just didn’t

cut the mustard so the guy who had beenblissfully married for last fifty years was you couldsay starting to sledge! So he shot off home andbrought back some LP’s of country & western andhe dj’d for the rest of the night. He was pretty coolhe had the whole place on tables singing Jolene!I don’t think I got paid for that one! But I did eatmy way through the buffet and had foodpoisoning for a week. I learnt from that gig thatall music has its own audiences and clearly fromsome of the hip replacement operations thatmust of followed that fiftieth bash music neverleaves you no matter what age you are.

I met that same English teacher ten years on, hewas sat at the traffic lights in his chocolate brownCortina and I pulled up along side him. It was mytwenty-sixth birthday and I had just been tocollect my first brand new car, an Astra GTE. Heleaned over and wound his window down andI pressed the button and mine glided open, hesaid “look at you, what you been doing to get acar like that?” and I remember feeling proud andsaying “I got lucky”.

ello, I’m Joe-Ann Randles and I work in theP.R./Promotion industry and also as a club

photographer (Some of my snaps above). I'veworked in many of the city’s bars and clubs overthe past couple of years and love my job moreand more each day.

I'll let you know a little secret, i'm really not aphotographer, I accidentally fell into photographyby mistake! I learned from my mistakes (removingthe cap on the lens helps!) and have become aself taught photographer. Luckily i've had theopportunity of working with some celebritieswhen they've visited Liverpool including Nelly,N-Dubz, Olly Murs, Coolio, Preston (Ordinary Boy)Jack Osbourne, Jedward, Shane from Westlife,Jenny Frost (Atomic Kitten) to name but a few.

I love Liverpool's nightlife, there are so manybeautiful scousers. Not just their looks, but theirtaste in fashion and such great sense of humourhelps make my job so enjoyable.

This month Liverpool lots going on includingAintree Races and Easter Bank Holiday weekends, all of which will bring thousands of extra peopleinto the city. Also, on the 28th April me and myfriend Chris Griff have a boat party organisedcalled ‘Salute The Royals’ which will take placethe night before the royal wedding. We havetaken full advantage of the bank holiday andmade it a perfect excuse to party. Everyone onboard the Royal Iris will be dressed up as royalty!

I look forward to the next edition for a further ‘rant’about Liverpool’s club land. Tarra for now. x

ey, this is my new column and I’ll be telling youwhat I’ve been up too. For those of you that

don’t know, I produce in the studio as ‘Cahill’ alongsideScott Rosser & Tim Condran. We had a top 20 hit with‘Trippin On You’ a few years ago and since then we’vebeen having great success as a remix outfit.

We have been asked to mix for the likes of CherylCole, Mariah Carey, N-Dubz and many more. Ourlatest mix was for Nicole Scherzinger on ‘Don’t HoldYour Breath’ which went in at number one in thenational chart. Currently we have just been asked toremix the new singles from Alexis Jordan and the FarEast Movement, plus we have our own new single dueout very soon. So busy in the studio working on those.

At the end of April we will get a nice studio break aswe are off on tour to Australia, DJ’ing in Brisbane,Melbourne and Sydney, we can’t wait! Plus we havegigs in Singapore on the way back too.

I’ll fill you all in, in the next edition.

ot long to go now untill the official Ibizaseason gets well and truly underway. This

year, Garlands is celebrating ten years of madnessat Club Eden. We’re also on the move to our newslot of a Friday Night. Myself and Dave Booth willbe heading back and forth on rotation throughoutthe summer and we’ll be doing the legendaryIbiza Boat Parties Tuesday and Friday nights. If you’re coming to Ibiza for the first time this yearthen make sure you purchase your boat tickets assoon as you arrive as they sell out pretty fast.

Follow Les...Back on home ground every Saturday night I’ll beon the decks at Garlands. There really is no otherplace in Liverpool that can offer such a varietyacross five rooms. Then I head a few yards downEberle Street to the after hours venue Passion. It’sexciting times at Passion as we’re going to be thefirst after-hours venue in the city that will be ableto offer you the chance to hire a booth for theevening! There’s also a second room that’s dueto open in the next few months.

Friday nights in Liverpool have always been atough nut to crack but I think since RobbieEdwards and I kicked off Eccentrico at Circo we’vehit the nail on the head. Circo is situated down inthe heart of the Albert Dock and remains a choicedestination for most clubbers on a Friday night.Over the last few years in the city we’ve defiantlyseen the rise in clubbers seeking to hire a VIPbooth for a special night out.

Every Saturday night you can always hear my show‘All Funked Up’ as part of the ‘Dance Weekend’ onRadio City (www.radiocity.co.uk) I’m a firm believerin showcasing local talent on my show. Anybodywho would like to submit a mix to me then send alink to [email protected]. It doesn’t matter if you’rea bedroom DJ or hold a residency. Until next time!

iverpool is famous for its home grown musicaltalent. Beatle mania automatically runs through

your mind at the mention of Liverpool and althoughthe Fab Four are definitely our most famous offspring, there are so many brilliant musicians that havecontributed to our city earning its musical credentials.Liverpool’s music scene offers fresh new talents that areclimbing the ladder and attempting to break the bigtime. The city is officially the World Capital of Pop whichmakes it an attractive platform for both globalsuperstars and less established acts to perform.

With so much constantly going on in Liverpool’s musicscene it’s hard to decide where to spend your valuabletime and money, to make the endless choice that littlebit easier, try out some of my recommendations for hotacts that are gigging locally this month.

THE SAND BAND

7th April 11 at Mojo

The Liverpool lads return to intimate refines of Mojo toindulge us with their psychedelic sounds that sitsomewhere between Gospel and Folk. They boastdreamy melodies, lightly layered harmonies and a richretro feel. Home grown talent that are destined for thebig time, if you haven’t already witnessed this band live, then head down to Mojo and feel your spine tingle atthe sensual sounds of The Sand Band,

THE UNDERTONES

14TH April 11 at O2 Academy

The well established Derry outfit head out on their “TrueConfessions” tour. Celebrating their 35th anniversary;they will be taking a trip down memory lane andplaying the tracks from their debut album “TheUndertones” in its entirety, along with some newmaterial. Not to be missed.

NOT ADVISED

15TH April 11 at O2 Academy

The future is looking bright for the pop punk 5 piecefrom Southampton. They are instantly infectiousdelivering sounds reminiscent of the Lost Prophets andFuneral for a Friend. Take note now, before thebandwagon hits.

JOHNNY FOREIGNER

27TH at Shipping Forecast

Birmingham noise-pop trio Johnny Foreigner don’t docompromise. This proud to be loud band offeranthemic tunes soaked in melodic soaring riffs. A gigthat promises to put a smile on your face, your toestapping, and your head banging (in a good way offcourse.)

GLASVAGAS

29TH April 11 at O2 Academy

Scottish band formed in early 2006, and championedby music industry guru Alan McGee. They return afterthe buzz they created back in 2008, Glasvegas' musicsounds rough, raw and epic; it is a stunning wall ofsound that strains the rich rockabilly.
