The Placer Title Company Story

Placer Title Company was founded by Leo French in 1973. Leo’s vision was to create a work environment that emphasized people. His dream: “To bring together a group of people who really care about each other and about their customers.” Leo believed that if this was accomplished, success would follow. It did. Beginning with only two offices—one in Roseville, California and the other in Auburn, California—Placer Title Company has grown throughout Northern California and beyond.

At Placer Title Company, our people are dedicated to the industry and are committed to giving exceptional service. Our staff’s longevity, combined with the company’s commitment to retaining long-term client relationships, has been the key to our success and is what makes us who we are today. Backed by the strength of Mother Lode Holding Company, we have been able to diversify our business by creating a National Lender Service Division — PTC/National Closing Solutions, a §1031 Exchange Company — NCS Exchange Professionals, and a Short Sale Negotiation Service — Short Sale Advantage. Furthermore, we have expanded our title and escrow services by adding North Idaho Title, Montana Title and Escrow, Wyoming Title and Escrow, and Targhee National Title to our family of companies. By expanding our services, we can better serve our clients and offer solutions to all of their title and escrow needs. At Placer Title Company, we care about each other and our clients, and continually demonstrate why we are a proven leader in the title and escrow industry.

History of Livermore

Robert Livermore, the city’s namesake, was born in 1799 in Essex, England. At 15 he left to travel the seas, finding many adventures along the way. He led an exciting life that included participating in the Battle of Callao, Peru during the Hispanic American War of Independence in 1820. In 1822, he came to California on the English trading ship the Colonel Young.

Mr. Livermore found work on a number of ranchos near Monterey and then San Jose. He married Josefa Higuera Molina and they settled on a rancho at Las Positas where he had large herds of cattle, flocks of sheep, many horses and grain fields, fruit orchards and a vineyard. Because of his successful management of the rancho, he became a rich man. Robert Livermore died in 1869, before the birth of the town that was named for him.

Walnut Creek’s Dean Lesher Center for the Arts, the Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, and a waterfront amphitheatre in Martinez are popular cultural venues. Community theatre groups such as Diablo Light Opera, Onstage Theatre, Playhouse West, Contra Costa Musical Theatre, Center Repertory Theater, the Town Hall Theatre Company, and the Willows Theatre Company, and the Willows Theatre offer a continuing array of live theater Choices.

With the opening of the railroad in 1869 William Mendenhall, one of California’s earliest pioneers, decided to lay out and develop a new town which he named for his old friend Robert Livermore. The economy of the valley was mainly agricultural. Cows, sheep, horses and fields of hay and grain sustained the population. There were manufacturers of farm machinery, buggies and windmills and large warehouses near the railroad for storing hay and grain. The cattle ranches continued the tradition of the Spanish rodeos, and when a large one was held in 1918 as a benefit for the Red Cross, an annual rodeo became a Livermore tradition that is now famous.

Settlers came from all over the world. A modest ranch southeast of town (near Alden Lane) was one of the boyhood homes of the renowned writer Jack London. It was in Livermore that his passion for reading developed, as recorded by Mr. London himself.

2

By 1876, when Livermore was incorporated the town had grown to 830 persons. As the fastest growing community in the valley, Livermore became prosperous. In the late 19th century, an extensive mercantile industry and vineyards planted over a wide area with European grapes, contributed to the economic well being of the community. It was found that the climate and soil of the valley was ideal for dry white wines. In 1889, Charles Wetmore entered his Cresta Blanca wine in the Paris Exposition and won the grand prize. It was an achievement that put the California wine industry on its feet and established its potential quality.

After the turn of the century, the establishment of the brick works and fuse manufacturing company made further economic contributions. The coming of two government research laboratories after World War II brought rapid increase in population from 4,000 persons in 1950 to 40,000 twenty years later.

Research and Development

One of the world’s leading scientific and engineering institutions, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employs over 8,000 scientists, technicians and administrative personnel. Co-founded by Dr. E.O. Lawrence and Dr. Edward Teller and managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy, the square-mile facility performs research vital to many national goals, including defense. The Lab’s defense research often has applications in other fields. For example, Lawrence Livermore signed licenses with two California companies to commercialize a new radar technology. One of the licenses will result in automobile safety applications such as detecting vehicles in a cars “blind spot,” and the other will produce a new generation of electronic hand tools. Radar systems can now be built for about $10 to perform the same tasks that once required equipment costing $40,000. Designs for the National Ignition Facility, the world’s largest laser, are currently being studied at the Laboratory. It could conceivably contribute to a new source of environmentally clean fusion energy, freeing the world from pollutants produced by fossil fuels. Innumerable new medical Technologies are being developed in conjunction with private industry, such as a new way of tissue welding for surgical patients, a blood gas monitoring system which would use a light projected through the skin to read blood gases and a new endoscope imaging system that uses better optics and computer imaging to minimize invasive surgery. Sandia National Laboratories is another of the world’s leading scientific and engineering institutions with a major site located in Livermore. Sandia-California’s main mission is national security with additional research programs in energy and environment, as well as integrated manufacturing technologies. Sandia is operated by a subsidiary of Lockeed Martine for the U.S. Department of Energy. Both national laboratories promote and facilitate technology transfer to U.S. industry and research partnerships with businesses and universities. These partnerships are essential to helping them fulfill their mission responsibilities and also support America’s competitiveness in world markets.

From the day California wine pioneer Charles Wetmore set foot on the rocky soil of the Livermore Valley, he knew it was a special place. Soon, the world came to agree with him when a California Wine, Wetmore’s own Livermore vintage, won California first international gold medal, the best of show, at the Paris Exposition in 1889. This grand showing opened the door to international acclaim for the state and the Livermore Valley and forced wine connoisseurs to take notice of the burgeoning wine country east of San Francisco.

California’s Original Wine Country

Today the same award-winning quality permeates those who come to experience the friendly wineries of the Livermore Valley. The quiet and unrushed community of winemakers and growers, who often double as tasting room hosts, offers the same friendly hospitality that visitors experienced over a century ago. Winemaking is a way of live as much as it is a vocation to these vintners, and given the Livermore Valley’s ideal climate and soil, its no wonder that everyone from fourth generation

Livermore Valley vintners to the cadre of new talented winemakers strives to make wines that reflect the character and potential of this region.

Yet, to fully understand the atmosphere and quality that surrounds the Livermore Valley, one must enter into a place where time seems to stand still – a place where one can experience the quality of the past in the world of today. Held on Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend each year is the Livermore Valley Harvest Wine Celebration. This event is the perfect opportunity for one to see and taste the quality this historic region has to offer. The celebration includes wine tasting, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, tours and much more, however, any day is a great time to visit this friendly wine country where American wine history was made and continues to be made.
