How time flies. It seems only yesterday we were celebrating

the ink drying on our first issue. Rather unsurprisingly, we’ve

once again been spoilt for choice with potential content this

month and it’s been a pleasure putting together our carefully

choreographed guide to the city.

You’ll find everything you need to inspire you for the month ahead,

with York promising to be a great place to LIVE and PLAY in May.

The great outdoors offers us some fantastic festivals and (assuming

the sun stays out to play) a summer’s worth of al fresco dining and

blissful bike rides around the city.

In our LOVE section, as we’re all looking at our long-forgotten summer

wardrobes wondering what to wear, we’ll be helping you navigate

through the latest looks and trends, and taking to the street with a new

Live&Live style blogger.

In GIVE, we share the great initiatives we’ve discovered and recognise

those individuals giving something back to the city. We’re also pleased

to announce this month’s “cover-price” charity is Snappy – if you enjoy

this free magazine you’re invited to help them make a difference by

donating what you what think the magazine is worth at

www.justgiving.co.uk/liveandloveyork. It’s obviously just a suggestion but

there’s some good karma in it for you!

Enjoy your month and tell us what you get up to!

We do love a good board game and Live&Love Towers once played host to a marathon session of Simpsons Monopoly. It lasted 15hrs without a winner!

So we were delighted to hear last month that the residents of York would be able to nominate their favourite landmarks and streets in the city for a York edition of the Monopoly board game.

Makers Winning Moves, who have exclusive licence from Monopoly owner Hasbro to make regional editions, received close to a thousand suggestions for York’s version of Mayfair, Oxford Street, Park Lane, and the other landmark streets and institutions at the close of voting. The Shambles, Cliffords Tower, and The Minster, are the usual suspects but we’re sure they’ll be the odd surprise. One thing for sure is that they won’t be short of local landmarks to choose from!

The York edition of Monopoly will be available to buy from early November this year. That’s one Christmas present taken care of!

A YORK MONOPOLY

THE BIG SCREEN

YORK MAKES IT’S MARK ON MONOPOLY WITH A SPECIAL EDITION FOR THE CITY

With the start of the World Cup a month away there is now a third-space beyond home and the pub to support England for those of us unable to make the trip to South Africa.

City of York Council are hopeful of giving football fans the chance to watch the World Cup on a giant screen in York. Talks are underway and locations are yet to be decided, so you’ll have to watch this space.

Policing will be increased to combat the usual concerns of alcohol-related disorder during the tournament so the big screen looks like a safe and fun option, and one that allows you to take full advantage of the record Summer temperatures we’ve been promised!

ENGLAND’S GROUP GAMES USA AT 7.30pm ON JUNE 12, ALGERIA AT 7.30pm ON JUNE 18, AND SLOVENIA AT 3pm ON JUNE 23.

YORK’S FIRST 5* THE CEDAR COURT GRAND HOTEL OPENS ITS DOORS THIS MONTH York will welcome its first five-star hotel, The Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa, this month. Over £20m has been invested in The Grand by Cedar Court Hotels, Yorkshire’s largest independent hotel group, creating 160 jobs. The transformation of the Grade II former railway headquarters in Station Rise, one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings, is set to be unveiled on May 7 with an aim of setting new standards of luxury in York.

When Cedar Court Grand is completed it won’t be the first time that the site has housed a hotel. In 1861, the York Post Office Directory advertised “Halliwell’s North Eastern Hotel” at the same address. It announced a “First Class Hotel, near the Minster and Museum, with excellent stabling” - similar, then, in most respects at least, to The Grand.

Extensive consultation with English Heritage has ensured the building’s historic features have been retained in its transformation from office space to the city’s first five-star hotel.

Fashion for less at TK Maxx in York

We also have some great news for all our readers who like a fashion bargain. In a further addition to York’s fashion landscape, we are pleased to announce that fashion retailer TK Maxx looks set to fill the void left by the former Boots store on Coney Street.

Earmarked for a September opening, the outlet will sell only ladieswear, whilst the existing TK Maxx store at Monks Cross will continue to offer the full range including menswear, kidswear, and homeware.

With a typical TK Maxx store taking stock of an incredible 10,000 new items each week and offering big labels at up to 60% discount, it is certain to go down a storm in York.LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON ANY STORIES IN THIS ISSUE, AND TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEWS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

Join innocent and The National Trust with a BUY ONE GET ONE BEE smoothie! The aim is to install 40 new beehives and one of the little beauties is York’s very own Goddard’s Garden!

HELP THE HIVES Help introduce 2 million bees back into the UK with a BUY ONE GET ONE BEE smoothie! The National Trust are working with innocent to set up 40 new beehives along with equipment to look after the little bees. The hives that you’re helping support are popping up at various National Trust sites all over the country, and Goddard’s Garden is so close to home there is no excuse not to visit. They’ll all be set up by 17th May, in some gardens you might not be able to see the hives, but just knowing they are there should give you a buzz!

BUZZING DAY OUT Goddard’s Garden is an oasis for wildlife, previously owned by Noel Goddard Terry of the famous York chocolate company. Enjoy a picnic in the tranquil garden, surrounded by lovely scenery but just watch out for the bees homing in on your smoothie! Open Monday to Friday, it’s a great way to just relax and enjoy the sounds of the wild.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE BEES?Start with something simple. The most important plants for bees in the northeast are wildflowers, especially the Dandelion! They give the bees a huge health kick, so a really easy way to help the bees after the winter is to leave the weed killer in the shed and do your bit for the wildlife in York! Easy.

GIVE THE HEN A HOME

FREE RANGE...

It is becoming an increasingly common activity to scour egg boxes for the comforting ‘free range’ statement on the egg box in question. Why not take this care a step further and provide hens with a better lifestyle first hand? When thinking of a family pet, a rabbit or fluffy kitten may be the first animals that spring to mind, yet hens are becoming popular additions to the family! The British Hen Welfare Trust is a Devon based organisation with energy and charisma which overflows into the publics’ heart.

Every year the organisation provides thousands of commercial laying hens, due for slaughter, with new homes and a brighter, cage free, future. Popularity for their scheme is ever growing: in 2004 a confident figure of 5,100 hens were re-homed, while in 2009 a staggering 61,957 hens were taken in by you, the public. But there are around 16 million caged hens in Britain so patrons of the charity, including Jamie Oliver, Anthony Worrall Thompson and the Duchess of Richmond, help spread the word.

When talking to the founder of BHWT, Jane Howorth, it was easy to tell where the drive and aspiration comes from. Jane says that the organisation will

Page 11: Live&Love York Magazine - May's Issue

WE LOVE SPOILT HENS

achieve its endeavours ‘by educating and engaging the public to help see all hens outside, free ranging’. Therefore by adopting a hen you provide the first, yet important step towards resisting the concept of battery hens. Jane is adamant that the popularity of adopting a hen can offer not only a new life for the birds but, on a larger scale, awareness of the importance behind free range products.

Jane’s passion for her cause is infectious, allowing the public to really have an impact. This budding mother hen describes to me the way forward: ‘start voting for free range with your purse and asking food manufacturers and supermarkets to use more free range eggs in their products. Together we can all make a difference to the welfare of laying hens and help British farmers at the same time, brilliant’!

Alongside rigorous campaigns to stop battery farming altogether it is evident that the BHWT is driven by the heart: ‘knowing they will be treated as pets and spoilt with treats and affection can be humbling knowing how their life started’. The hen’s new found freedom rubs off on the proud new owner. There are not many instances where we can personally see a worthy cause profit from our input, but the BHWT

really allows us to reap the benefits while attributing to a commendable organisation.

The process of re-homing is quick and easy, the BHWT do not charge but donations are always welcome. Hen collection points are dotted all over the country, all you have to do is register your details online on the BHWT website or contact the coordinator for your region. There are also plenty of other organisations in Britain that are on the same wavelength: RSPCA, Little Hen Rescue and Adoptahen, to name a few. The charities give plenty of guidance towards the care of the hens, and coops quickly become the hub of your back garden!

Jane’s endearing comment just goes to show that the hens find a way into everyone’s hearts: “‘if the owner talks to the cardboard box as it’s carried to the car, you know you’ve got a special home for the girls!” So do you fancy taking one under your wing?

There’s also the social aspect of cycling; you can meet your friends

and pedal off to undiscovered places that are too far to walk to or inaccessible by car. Many York residents who cycled in their youth have rediscovered the unexpected

pleasures of a quick and stress-free daily cycle commute. Others enjoy cycling in their leisure time and would rather avoid the traffic by

making use of York’s many purpose-built cycle routes.

If you’ve not yet tried cycling, now is the perfect time as Cycling City York has an action-packed

diary of events to tempt you back into the saddle. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned wheeler, there’s something for everyone in the coming weeks. Why not give

cycling a try? Check it out at

WHAT’S STOPPING YOU...

Now that the sun is shining, cycling is really taking off, both locally and nationally. There’s no wonder when you think of the many advantages, such as free parking, no fuel costs and plenty of fresh air and exercise, all of which means that you arrive at your destination refreshed, happy and clear headed.

Q&AREADER

IF I CYCLE TO WORK EVERYDAY HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY TYRES CHECKED?“Tyres have a hard life on our pot-holed streets and need to be checked weekly for signs of perishing, cracking and most importantly – the correct pressure. An underinflated tyre is harder to ride, will steer awkwardly and will destroy itself in no time. Over 75% of bikes we see in the shop have seriously under inflated tyres.”

VINTAGE BIKES SEEM TO BE IN FASHION, ARE THE ORIGINAL ONES SAFE TO RIDE?

“Ask any passionate cyclist and they will smile at this question, they ooze character! Sadly they will often feature poorly designed brakes and worn components. But, if it’s maintained well they are perfectly safe!”

I HAVEN’T BEEN ON A BIKE IN YEARS AND WONDERED WHAT WAS THE BEST WAY TO GET BACK INTO CYCLING SAFELY IN THE CITY?

“Firstly, dust off the old steed and take it to your local bike shop for a safety check and service. Secondly, York Council’s Cycling City project team are running one day workshops throughout York, promoting cycle skills training. Get in touch with the York council cycle trainers and attend one of their sessions!”

WHAT KIND OF GLOVES AND SHOES ARE BEST TO WEAR FOR

LONG BIKE RIDES? “Gloves and shoes are a very personal

choice however I’d always opt for a rigid soled cycling shoe (even without a cleat fitted) as the support for the foot arch

is second to none. As for gloves, I prefer a full fingered glove with padding on the

back of the palm only. Anything else tends to interfere with the feedback from the

bike and make the rider feel remote.”

OUTDOORS

We like to run to stay young, to justify our chocolate addiction, and to beat our personal best each time. Walking and outdoor activities seemed a natural progression. Yet, we both felt there’s something inexplicably unattractive about hiking through the country when you’re used to living in beautiful, stylish York. Sure, the fields and lambs make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, and the fresh air fills you with energy. But the people you often encounter make you feel so intimidated and ridiculous for not having GPS, a compass, and a long pointy stick for prodding bushes. ‘Walking Man’ is not one we generally come into contact with in regular daily life. He makes you feel a little silly and superficial for enjoying mascara, or for getting excited when the local coffee house starts a loyalty card. There is nothing wrong with ‘Walking Man’ – he’s probably a lovely man, a fantastic Uncle with survival skills to rival Bear Grylls, but he never would have survived my school with socks tucked into his trousers and THAT pointless pointy stick. He’s

the man who knows directions, but who is so intimidating to ask, with his encyclopaedic knowledge of insects, that being lost becomes a more desirable prospect than embarrassing oneself for not having a compass.

We decided to visit Dalby forest for some serious fitness action and calorie burning. Dalby Forest is stunning – a bit like OUR Canada, without the bears. The weather forecast ruled out Go Ape, so a hike around a dreamy forest seemed like a great way to spend time. Being rather creative types, forests conjure up images of Shakespeare and Enid Blyton’s ‘Faraway Tree’ adventures for me, and memories of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ for Katy. After much looking under stumps for enchanted toadstools (and telling of spooky stories from Katy), we started walking. Mid-week, term-time, it soon caught our attention that we

WALKING IN THE WILD

The tale of two women in Dalby Forest... without a compass

17

hadn’t passed a soul for miles. This became more apparent as the rain fell heavy; there wasn’t a part of us that wasn’t soaked, and mascara had found its way into places mascara shouldn’t be. The map we’d been issued had become a pile of mush, and there weren’t any signposts that looked anything like our trail.

Some mountain bikers reassured us that our bearings were spot on – phew! Rain-sodden, we wanted to hug them. By the end of the day, ‘Walking Man’ seemed like a vision we would embrace. We would happily tuck our trousers into our socks and prod around with sticks in bushes… perhaps until we’d dried and had a hot chocolate.

Dalby Forest is a wonderful place to write, to sketch magical frogs, and get lost in the landscape. It is perhaps better for mountain biking than hiking, but well worth a visit. And if you see a man with a compass and his trousers tucked into his socks, give him a high-five from us.

Dalby Forest is situated on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park. For a full list of activities and information, visit www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest.

Combine a labyrinth of strange and beautiful rock formations with names like Dancing Bear, Druid’s Writing Desk, and the Idol, with a legend that the Druid’s created them and there’s no question why people have been intrigued by Brimham Rocks (30 miles west of York), for over one hundred years – especially rock climbers.

Local climber Jim Croft is no exception. A seasoned rock climber, he has scaled routes in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and across the UK. Since 2005, he has called York home, particularly for the challenging climbing in the area.

When Croft’s name was passed on to the organisers of the Yorkshire Gritstone climbing guidebook, to write the Brimham Rocks section, there was no doubt about his involvement. The Yorkshire guide covers dozens of gritstone climbing areas in Yorkshire and is published approximately every 10 years. It’s a monumental task, taken on entirely by volunteers, Croft included. With over 500 routes to check and reorganise Croft has lots of work (and climbing) to do. I’m sure he won’t mind.

When asked why he chose to take on this challenging project, Jim’s answer was simple, for him “it’s a labour of love.” The Yorkshire Gritstone Guidebook will be available this year.

Local clubs like the York Mountaineering Club, York Alpine Club or

If you spent any time last month visiting artists, sculptors and potters in their studios as part of the Open Studios weekend, you’ll have seen something of the enormous variety of talent and creativity we have in this city. Some of the works of art on show were amazing and if you missed this great event, I highly recommend it for next year!

Many local works of art are shown through the year at places like the Pyramid Gallery on Stonegate and Grays Court on Chapter House Street, but it’s great to meet the artists where they work in studios and their own homes. As a buyer of crafts from many countries around the world, I see a lot of talent, and it’s exciting that York has become such a centre for fair trade, which rewards creativity and hard work with decent pay, and avoids exploitation. York now has more fair trade shops – five to my knowledge – than any other town in Britain, even London.

Latest on the scene is Incallajta, which opened recently at 40 Shambles. It’s run by Florinda Henderson, a Bolivian who has lived in Yorkshire since 1991. Most Bolivian crafts come from the Andes where farming is the main source of income, and these native communities often rely on handicrafts to bolster their income. Florinda has a wide and wonderful variety of crafts in her shop and I recommend you take a look.

We’ve come a long way from when I first looked at starting a fair trade shop in 1980. In those days, fair trade was unknown and there was hardly anything to sell. Today politicians bring the word “fair” into half their speeches, and we can have a shop like Incallajta full of wonderful goods just from just one country. It’s a fantastic improvement.

Jeremy Piercy started York’s first Fair Trade shop, Shared Earth, in 1986. It now has 10 branches and is the UK’s

largest Fair Trade retailer.

So what is the secret to the ever growing popularity of this business, tucked away on the fringe of York city centre? What sets it apart from the hoards of hairdressing salons found around every street corner in the city? Is it the cool retro decor, the complimentary wine & beer or the Italian espresso base coffees? Maybe it’s the jukebox that invites the clients to play a selection of their favourite tunes or would the Free wifi access swing it for you? It must be a customer service thing because all hairdressers are equally well trained, right? Most definitely not!

Just one look at the impressive and ever changing array of artwork that adorns the walls and window of the salon, combined with the realisation that this work is by the Bang Artistic Team makes you wonder that there must be some seriously intelligent and creative thinking behind the salon hairdressing passed on to their adoring clientele!

Bang was the brainchild of husband and wife team, Jonathan and Sarah Cotton. Sarah is an extremely gifted hairdresser with a natural flair for creative session work, Jonathan’s background is in creative direction, photography and design. Their natural synergy has resulted in a prolific collaborative portfolio of published work over the last decade, so the final outcome of a successful creative business came as no surprise.

Sarah’s strong belief in education is the backbone of this business. She spent almost 10 years educating staff for one of the world’s biggest hairdressing companies before starting the ‘Bang’ brand with Jonathan. “Good education is everything!” states Sarah, “And that education should be consistent across

York is renowned for it’s quirky and fashionable independent businesses, of which Bang Hair is a shining example. Bang has been trading for just under 3 years and already has established a reputation as one of Yorkshire’s Hot Spots for High Fashion Hair Styling. Recognised by industry leaders and with clients regularly flocking from all over the UK to get their tresses tended to by this cool bunch of Coiffuristas.

the whole salon floor. That’s why any stylist, regardless of experience, who joins our team must be re-trained on the ‘Bang’ training program. It is our way of ensuring the highest standard of hairdressing is employed on our cutting floor”

“There’s much more to what we do than what goes on day to day in the salon” says Jonathan, “our stylists are encouraged to get involved with the ‘bigger picture’ of the industry - session styling on photoshoots and catwalks, presenting stage work & entering industry competitions. This essential experience means they are always on top of the current and upcoming trends, techniques and products. The knowledge gained is naturally filtered through to our clients’ styling.”

The couple both originally stem from Manchester, so why York? “Why not?” says Jonathan, “York is an amazing and vibrant city, full of cool people who deserve some damn fine hairdressing!”

For a complete picture of what this team are all about, just take a look at their 3 year back catalogue of photographic work on the ‘Bang Hair, York’ facebook page. Since establishing the brand they have knocked up an impressive tally of 4 magazine cover shots, countless editorial spreads, regular requests to style charity catwalk events (including a 3 year run with York Uni Fusion Team raising a total of over £30k) and even staging their own charity ‘fashion rocks’ style catwalk showcase for a sell out crowd of over 300 people. In their first year they were invited to be ‘Official Hair Stylists to Miss England’, who, by the way, still travels from London every six weeks to visit the salon. They’ve also been finalists in the prestigious L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy competition for 2 consecutive years.

Most recently, L’Oréal Professionnel have been taking a keen interest in Bang’s progression and have been mentoring members of the Bang Art Team on such programs as the ‘L’Oréal Evolution Team’ and ‘I.D. Artist’ program. These schemes are targeted to select the cream of hairdressing talent in the UK and hone their skills in education, stage presentation and session styling, so that they and their salon can represent L’Oréal Professionnel at high profile hair & fashion events across Europe.

“So what next for Bang Hair? Well, the rest of 2010 looks to be pretty busy and we are on the lookout for another talented individual to join our team. So if you are a gifted stylist and think you have what it takes then get in touch. We’re still in the early days of the business and our focus is building a strong, ambitious team and bringing the best York has to offer in hairdressing to our growing and loyal clientele. Although I do hear the faint bells of the ‘British Hairdressing Awards’ chiming!”

“Bookish is in with razor sharp glasses, dapper shirt and coat

“Trousers can have a tendency to be a little bit predictable or boring, but this pair is certainly neither of those! The silky material and rose pink colour are lovely and feminine with the pleated waistline giving them a slight edge.”

Alfie and Jimmy are a creative duo who amalgamate their own interpretation of fashion, art, illustration, photography and much more. They will lead you into their secret underworld and take you with them through forest adventures.

Jimmy the fox spent his youth roaming the countryside. Over field and folly he developed a love for all things handmade. After a stint on Skye playing his fiddle he hitched a ride to York, erected his tent, darned a quilt of disused clothes and set up camp with Alfie; a gypsy loving Mutt with a Dickensian swagger. Alfie had spent his last years roaming the cemeteries of Europe collecting vintage fabrics and fashioning pieces all of his own.

Over the campfire Jimmy and Alfie cooked up a plan to join forces. They would undertake this next leg of their journey together and share all of their findings.

This fox and hound encourage you to join in the adventure as they delve through a world of experimenting and making. They are not a fashion magazine, nor are they conventional artists but they are creating something interactive for both maker and audience. Something open-ended, open to interpretations yet aesthetically pleasing. Providing an outlet to produce sellable art/fashion based creations, this duo will entice you into their world of tales and day dreams.

So, with tents pitched and boot laces tied, we are hitting the road, come and join us you lovely things!

Set to be York’s first boutique hostel it will offer visitors to the city a fresh alternative to affordable accommodation. Karen Waugh, owner and entrepreneur, ran a competition to involve five young designers to create an environment that would ensure visitors would have a memorable experience. The design winners recently converged on The Fort to check out where they would be working and had a few words to say about the city and their involvement with the project.

Steve Haygarth, 25, a fine art graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University came up with his idea as a result of his previous experiences in hostels, said:

“It was really just reactionary from past experiences I guess. Most hostels I have ever been in have been like jail cells so what I want to do is create a room that people want to stay in. I think a log cabin represents that.”

May Chung, 23, a multimedia graduate from Northumbria University will create a room that includes a multitude of sketches of futuristic deep sea creatures.

Mark Brear, 28, an interior architect and design graduate from NottinghamTrent University, said:

“I think this is a great way to put identity and expression in to a hostel experience. There is so much to see and do in York; I know all my friends will lovea place like this to ‘crash’ at, especially with it being so centrally located.”

The Fort is set to open in May, but if you can’t wait until then, feel free to check out more information at www.thefortyork.co.uk

In last month’s edition of Live&Love Yorkyou may have read about the exciting project currently under development in the heart of the city: The Fort.

YorSolicitor WORKING WITH YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS

As York embraces a more creative

future where the emerging

industries rely on creative rather

than traditional assets, we are now

surrounded by creative people. This

creative community includes artists,

musicians, potters, film makers,

web designers, games developers,

sculptors and textile designers...

It’s one thing to create; it’s another

thing to create to make a living.

How can you do this when so

much is free on the web? Nothing

wrong with sharing is there?

Most creative assets are

protected by copyright. Can

the law keep up with all the

new digital media? Surprisingly,

software is still regarded as a

literary work for the purpose

of copyright. Various schemes

have arisen for widespread

software licensing including Open

Source Software. However, it is

still important for licensees to

understand how they work.

Copyright is changing. Some

people favour Creative Commons

whereby they reserve some of

their rights but waive others. Will

this erode the inherent value in

copyright works?

In an effort to stimulate businesses in

the election remains to be seen.

So how does this affect you? What

How can you make money from your

I designed this calendar as a promotional item for a Charity called ‘Mud’ which is run by the Eden Project. My aim was to create an interactive product that allowed its user to grow their own calendar.

The calendar works by having seeds placed on the inside of the box, these seeds when watered will grow up towards the light and through the cut out templates. Each month has an alternate colour scheme inside the box to give the calendar visual impact even when the seeds have not started to grow.

The best part of getting pictures of the great outdoors is that it gets you off your backside. Not just holidays, but the trip to work, your garden or park, anywhere will do. You've probably already got lots of outdoor photos on your phone, camera or computer. Before you look for pictures or get the camera out, promise yourself that you’ll print out your favorites and display them. Our family pics go in frames from Alan at York Rose Framing, albums or pin-boards, but there are totally loads of ways to use your pictures. If you know where you want picures to go (eg in that frame you got as a wedding present that’s still got the generic image in it) then you’ll be motivated to get snapping!

A quick look through the outdoor pics from my

phone makes me want to make a collage for

the kids, bright colours, seasons, pics of them

doing cool stuff. That’s gotta be better on

their wall than a mass produced poster. Grab a ‘Walbulm’ from Give a Dog a Bone or online, and get your pics done at Jessops

for pennies, and Bob’s your uncle.

The other thing that ocurs to me is that they’re all shot without flash (my camphone does’nt have one and it’s turned off on the polaroid). Hence the cool winter evening light, backlit sunshine shots and shakey closeups on overcast days in the market. So if your using a compact or SLR or Phone, find out how to turn the flash off, look around for things to rest the camera on to minimise shake (fence posts, the floor, kids heads etc) and take pictures THAT ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE THEY DID WHEN YOU SAW THEM. Imagine that.

Look for colours, patterns, shoot all the doors, anything orange, strangers with good hair, nice shoes, the plants in the garden centre . And dont forget to take a few pics

of yourself while your out there, you never know when you might be looking cool.

The panorama shot was done with around 10

shots from the camera phone and some free online software, and it occurs to me that I can print it at home on a few sheets of

A4 and wrap it round a lampshade for the nippers, Blue Peter badges all round!

Shoot from low down, shoot in cool light (mornings and afternoons look less harsh than midday), watch how the light looks on your friends / lovers / children’s faces and before you press the button and move you or them around to see what happens. If your taking pics to show to children, take them from the childs height so that the pics represent the world as they see it not some weird view. They will be taking the camera off you in no time at all - mint.

FESTIVAL FEVER

This year, a jungle call will hail the start of summer, as York Carnival transforms the city into an urban jungle, alive with artists and musicians from the Yorkshire community.

The parade will spring into action at 1.00pm from the Minster Gardens. Hundreds will be involved, including children from local schools and youth groups showcasing a vibrant array of ‘wild’ costumes, masks and musical instruments made during our Outreach programme. You too can ‘Go Wild’ at our mask making workshops and then join in the procession!

When the parade reaches the Lion’s Den on Parliament Street, the festivities will already be in full jungle swing. This stage will be packed full of acts all day, with a performance from Section 60 as well as some of the best loved entertainers in York. There’ll be cheerleaders, dancers, singers, drummers

and much more. In front of the Lion’s Den you will find Safari Island where voluntary groups and local craftsmen will display their wares.

Deeper into the wilderness of York, the Watering Hole, in St Helen’s Square, will hold performances from acoustic bands and traditional music groups, right through to belly dancing and world music. So come and

witness these brilliant entertainers thrive in their natural habitat! For the more adventurous explorers amongst you, come and discover the Workshop Jungle situated in St Sampson’s Square. This year, the Jungle will be dense with exciting workshops and fun activities. If you want to be part of a percussion band or learn a new dance, then shelter in the marquee and enjoy the opportunity to learn the behaviour of these wild performers. Cubs’ Corner will also be situated in here, there will be face painting, workshops and many other activities.

Finally, King’s Square will house the Bee Hive; our new youth stage showcasing York’s young talent.

Wherever their talent lies, whether it is singing, dancing, acting, musical performance or poetry reading, the Hive will provide a platform to show it off.

So on Sunday 6th June 2010, York Carnival Goes Wild, and we would love for you to come and experience this adventure with us! A perfect outing for the family with attractions for all ages, it’ll be the perfect start to your summer!Check out www.yorkcarnival.org for more information. This year we are looking for people to showcase their talents in any of our 3 performance areas. We also hope people would like to get involved in the Parade. You could be dancers, singers, actors or all of the above! If you are a part of a society or group of any kind, we would love to hear from you.

The York Spring Festival of New Music starts on May 12th, bringing with it music which is both new in its conception, and new to the region. The festival is run by a team of University of York music students who lend a fresh approach, diverse experience, and lots of ambition.

Whilst the festival has been established for several years, 2010 marks a turning point, as the young organisers try to bring it to a wider audience. Festival Manager Martin Scheuregger says, “York is famed for its annual array of festivals, and we really want the Spring Festival to become a key part of this calendar”.

The first evening concert will set the tone, as the Elysian String Quartet spice up the chamber music tradition in a vibrant display of new works (12th May). The vibrancy continues with shows such as the virtuosic and theatrical York-based group Black Hair in concert (15th May). Their programme includes a piece specially

commissioned from Roger Marsh by another York music series, Late Music who copromote the concert.

The first event of the festival will give a break for shoppers, as York-based Good Dog Happy Band bring their blend of traditional American folk music, country, and original material to St. Helen’s Church for a 1:00 concert on Wednesday 12th May.

The National Centre for Early Music provides a platform for classical music on 14th May with a lunchtime concert of piano music, where you can see Catherine Laws playing a piano... but also toy dogs, toy cars and more! The evening will see American soprano Marja Kay at the NCEM, presenting a wonderful programme of contemporary Finnish song.

City Screen Basement Bar hosts an evening of music that breaks barriers between the worlds of pop and classical, with cellist/singer Laura Moody headlining

Dance Together (13th May) is a collaborative showcase of dance pieces devised by students from the University of York and York St John University. With young minds thinking together, the breadth of styles here is amazing.

Students of universities from around the country will come to York for two days of discussions, workshops, concerts, talks, and more on the weekend of the festival. These events are free to the public, and will be a fascinating insight into new music for scholar and enthusiast alike.

The ladies who meet once a week to knit certainly do. Two work friends formed the knit club early last summer and since then the group has grown organically. Unlike some clubs this one doesn’t have a name, mailing list or newsletter; those things just wouldn’t fit with the ethos – the idea is simply a bunch of lovely ladies catching up … knitting optional.

Complicated patterns, conversation and cocktails apparently don’t mix. Club pieces tend to be simple scarves or blankets. Founder member Laura recently finished a fantastic bright scarf interwoven with ribbons, “I absolutely love it, its so snuggley - it makes me happy every time I pick it up!”. It seems the rhythmic clicking of needles induces higher levels of relaxation as well as happiness. Long standing member Jane says, “I’ve been known to fall asleep knitting, that’s how therapeutic it is”, as she gradually weaves a pale blue scarf with bright red cherries.

If you fancy giving it a go, pick up some size 4 needles, a ball of wool and head on down to the Evil Eye Lounge on Stonegate this Friday at 5pm. Happy knitting!

In a world premiere of this exciting production, we are transported to a New York hotel room on December 7, 1980 to relive the events of the night before the assassination of John Lennon. No one knows what took place in Mark Chapman’s hotel room on his last night of anonymity before killing Lennon. That is, until now. A woman comes forward with her story – a girl in a green dress trapped in a New York hotel room - the story of John, Holden and Mark Chapman. Remixed, re-lived, re-imagined. Award winning writer Richard Hurford’s stunning new play in partnership with Theatre Royal’s residents Pilot Theatre explores the fatal attraction of fame and obsession on this infamous day.

Remaining ever true to the original 1957 Broadway production, West Side Story comes to York courtesy of highly acclaimed professional Musical Theatre Director Bev Jones and his talented cast. Fifty years on from its debut, it remains one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time, with the plot based upon Shakespeare’s classic romance Romeo and Juliet. With energetic and evocative dance routines and a breathtaking score that includes “Tonight, America, Maria, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere”, it is a rare opportunity to catch this classic production in the region, and one not to be missed.

From The Mooted Theatre Co. comes the tale of notorious highwayman Dick Turpin as he flees Yorkshire in the Spring of 1737 with a bounty on his head. The play follows the history books, taking us through his life on the run as alias John Palmer through to his execution two years later, filling in the gaps along the way.

This period of exile in Turpin’s legendary life remains, to this day, something of a mystery. It is known that he traded in the area as a horse dealer until he was apprehended and imprisoned in York Castle in October 1938. In the transcripts of his trial there are several mentions of a woman to whom Turpin bequeathed his last effects on the day of his execution.

Magical and intriguing, DEAD MAN’S SHOES reveals the woman behind the mystery, and the man behind the myth. It is a dark and passionate tale of danger, deception and the destructive forces of a fugitive in love. The Mooted Theatre Co. are a Yorkshire professional theatre company founded by York-based actor Andy Curry, and Harrogate-based director Mark France and producer Cath Doman. Over the past three years they have toured to critical acclaim throughout the region, performing in diverse spaces from pub back rooms up to York Minster.

Dead Man’s Shoes is their first original piece, working with celebrated Leeds play write Gemma Head and a wealth of outstanding local talent.

CHINA: JOURNEY TO THE EAST

China: Journey to the East, spans 3,000 years of Chinese history and culture, exploring themes of play and performance, technology, belief and festivals, food and drink, and language and writing.

China has been a major influence on many parts of the world through trade and the movement of peoples. Chinese Diaspora communities form a vital part of the history of many countries, including Britain.

This unique exhibition features over 100 objects from the British Museum, the largest loan of Chinese material the Museum has made in the UK. The exhibition also includes objects from the collections of some of the partner museums and from elsewhere within their regions. The tour is organised through the British Museum’s Partnership UK scheme. Andrew Burnette, Deputy Director of the British Museum will formally open this special exhibition on Thursday 27th May.

The exhibition presents key enduring Chinese inventions such as the abacus (the world’s first calculator), the compass, and silk and porcelain manufacture. Objects will provide insight into the three main Chinese belief systems: Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism and will shed light on the colourful Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), and the important Mid-Autumn Festival.

PLAYLIST

Our love affair with all things related to The Bluetones continues this month as their frontman Mark Morriss plays a solo gig at new Gillygate venue Stereo (ex Speakeasy / Certificate 18). His debut solo album, “Memory Muscle”, was released in May 2008. A gentler, folk-tinged record, it includes five re-recorded tracks which had previously been released under the name “Fi-Lo Beddow” as an EP in February 2006. A little known fact is that the strings on the record were arranged by Hollywood favourite David Arnold, who became a fan of “Expecting to Fly” by The Bluetones whilst scoring the hit movie “Independence Day”.

The Delays specialise in good, honest indie-pop branded with their own unmistakable sound. They come to York with a good track record as their first three albums have all been critically acclaimed and charted high in the UK. Their eargly anticipated fourth, “Star Tiger, Star Ariel”, is due for release in June this year. It’s difficult to tell that this is a non-fictional account of Osborne’s adventures as his style could fool you into believing this a work of fiction. And one worthy of a sequel at that! The summer months are beckoning and if a cultured trip abroad is in order make sure you pick up a copy of this very unique travel guide. The vivid characters and exotic encounters may whet your appetite for Thailand. A passionate, affectionate record of adventures and misadventures in the world’s hottest metropolis. Osborne’s is a visceral experience of Bangkok, whether he’s wandering the canals that fill the old city; dining at the No Hands Restaurant, where his waitress feeds him like a baby; or launching his own notably unsuccessful career as a gigolo. A guide without inhibitions, Osborne takes us to a feverish place where a strange blend of ancient Buddhist practice and new sexual mores has created a version of modernity only superficially indebted to the West. Bangkok Days is a love letter to the city that revived Osborne’s faith in adventure and the world.

Chris Morris, the undisputed king of controversial comedy, takes on terrorism in his debut feature film “Four Loins”. Based on a group of four Islamic Jihadi terrorists from the north of England, it is a trilling, satirical comedy that in Morris’ own words sits on the “Dad’s Army side to terrorism”. Received strong reviews on its premiere at Sundance and rather predictably will divide opinion amongst audiences. Not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of dark comedy and Morris in particular (we’re both) then you’ll want to catch it.

7th May Reel, City Screen

Whilst it’s hard to imagine another Robin Hood film coming close to the Disney version, if anybody is capable of the challenge it’s Ridley Scott. In another collaboration with long-term accomplice Russell Crowe, who plays everybody’s favourite archer, we’ll be taken through the familiar tale of robbing from the rich to give to the poor in order to correct the injustices of the Sheriff of Nottingham and to earn the hand of Maid Marian (Cate Blanchett). With such a stellar Director and cast, we’re confident it will prove to be one of the biggest hits of the year and not just Gladiator with a bow and arrow!

From 14th MayVue, Reel, City Screen

To mark the culmination of York’s new brass music festival – Brassed On - over the Bank Holiday weekend, City Screen is set to welcome writer/director Mark Herman for a Q&A of his political comedy/drama Brassed Off. In this 1996 favourite, the emotional turmoil wrought in the destruction of Britain’s coal industry is cleverly focused on a colliery brass band, drawing superb performances from Pete Postlethwaite and Stephen Tompkinson, as well as Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald. A feel-good movie with deep notes of social commentary.

24 HOURS IN YORK. LOVELY. THE OCCASION? A FRIEND FROM OVERSEAS, HERE FOR A VISIT. MY MISSION? TREAT THEM TO THE HIDDEN TREASURES OF YORK. LET THE COBBLED-PAVEMENT POUNDING BEGIN08:30 Snuggled in the shadows of the Minster is a café so cozy you instantly feel like a local. Café Concerto serves up the best smoked salmon & scrambled eggs I’ve ever tasted, and for traditionalists the Full English is un-missable. Using local produce wherever possible, Team Concerto is proud of it’s reputation as ‘The ultimate neighbourhood restaurant’ and rightly so. And you won’t even have to queue.

10:15 To some it may sound like cheating, but I say leave it to the experts and join The Association of Voluntary Guides’ City Tour. Leaving Exhibition Square daily at 10:15 and 14:15, this is a 90 minute amble through all of York’s tourist must-sees, including The City Walls and The Shambles. So you don’t have to try and blag the history bits yourself. The total cost of this fantastic service? A smile and a handshake should do it.

12:00 The 10 acres of botanical gardens, nestled at York’s heart, is the perfect picnic spot. Give lovely Louise at ‘Love to Eat’ a call and have a freshly prepared hamper delivered to Museum Gardens. Tailor-made to suit all tastes, with, whatever you fancy, really. You’ve got to try the fairy dusted cupcakes though! Stroll back into town along the riverside whilst enjoying a 99 to look as quintessentially English as possible. Even if it’s raining. Especially if it’s raining.

14:30 With the second best shopping street in the country, (Stonegate, according to Lord Google) it’s no wonder that York is packed like ribena berries in a mini, every weekend and holiday. After a cursory glance in the chain stores, it’s the boutiques and vintage shops that really set York apart. I could recommend a dozen or more, but my advice is to just have a wander and see where your feet take you.

17:00 It’s right there, you see it every day (it towers over everything else in the city, after all) you hear the bells every weekend, and yet it’s easy to forget the beauty and magnitude of York Minster. Evaded the crowds and revel in a truly goose-bump-inducing experience,

and take in the Evensong service. Hymns from The Mister Choir bring this gothic masterpiece to life, and you’ll get out of climbing those 275 or so steps to the tower!

18:00 Address the balance and nip to the Evil Eye for a little Dutch-courage. I recommend the ‘Constantine the Great‘, an award-winning vodka-lemon-strawberry

concoction named after the Roman Emperor buried at the Minster (you know the snobby looking statue - that‘s the one). For those fearless few amongst us it has to be the Evil Zombie- 7 different rums, finished with Absinthe! Ouch. See you on the other side.

20:00 Of the 13 ghost walks currently stomping the dusk trail around the city, ‘The Haunted Walk of York’ is the best I’ve tried. Departing at 8pm daily from Exhibition Square, this guide givesan hour of well-told, spine tingling stories, without any gimmicky nonsense.

21:00 If you can’t face the trek to Fossgate after all that sightseeing, then it’s time to dispel the myth that the Dean Court Hotel is (how can I put this nicely?) a little bit twee. The menu, again highlighting local producers, is sublime and well-priced, and the setting is surprisingly chic.

22:00 Stumble 5 minutes down the road, past arguably the best busker in the city, to ASK for a coffee. The Assembly Rooms is one of the earliest neo-classical buildings in Europe, and one of the most beautiful in York. With Corinthian columns, chandeliers and impossibly high ceilings, it definitely has the wow factor.

22:30 With over 200 bars and pubs in the city, the scope for a good time is endless. Traditionalists may prefer the Guy Fawkes Inn, but I think Stonegate Yard is perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. And some genius even thought to add an awning so the courtyard can be enjoyed year-round. Well as long as you sneakily get the chair under one of the heaters.

“You guys give up? Or are you thirsty for more?!” Now you’ve had a little R&R the real party begins. The choice is up to you, but for me it’s the trinity; 1331 for the dynamic atmosphere and great tunes, Bobo Lobos for cocktails and a little

bootie shaking, and finally, Dusk for those who still haven’t had enough of a good thing.

Now what time does Betty’s open for breakfast again? IF YOU WANT TO FIND ANY OF THE PLACES LINDSAY RECOMMENDS THEN BECKON THE WORLD WIDE WEB AND GOOGLE, GOOGLE, GOOGLE!

We’re always excited to hear from people who share our passion of all things York, and this month we discovered the good work of Adam Greenwood and Frank Grosvenor.

Adam and Frank are responsible for a fabulous initiative that you’ve no doubt seen for your own eyes – the I “Heart” Y t-shirts that have been proudly worn by fellow fans of the city since December 2008.

We talked to Adam Greenwood about the inspiration behind the now iconic t-shirts:“One day I was walking through the city and I realised that even though many artistic people I know move out of York to London to seek their fortune or whatever, I’m really happy to live here. One of the reasons for this is the thriving little community of artists, writers and filmmakers, many of whom I’ve already started to feature on www.i-heart-y.co.uk. I kind of wanted these t-shirts to be almost a badge of honour for us and for everyone else who feels a pride for this city in the way that the residents of our American namesake do.”

The ethical t-shirts are available for £10 each from www.i-heart-y.co.uk and City Screen (TIP: both the website and City Screen have a 2 for £15 offer), Attic Records and the Visit York centre opposite the art gallery. In collaboration with City Screen - who have agreed to waive their commission on the t-shirts - Adam and Frank have donated a total of £175 so far to the cinema’s chosen water charity, Plan UK.

We have an I “Heart” Y t-shirt* to

Visit www.freecycle.org, search for ‘York, England’ and request to join the group. All items posted on the forum must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. Since I discovered this gem I’ve acquired a wetsuit, half a dozen energy efficient light bulbs and speakers to pimp my ride. There’s a positive catch though, you should be willing to not only receive items, but give them as well. So, in the spirit of Freecycle, is anyone looking for a vintage leather jacket? See you on Freecycle!

We want the magazine to always be free for our readers. That’s why, instead of putting a cover charge on the magazine, we thought we’d encouraging donations to a carefully selected local charity each month if you feel the magazine has been an enjoyable read. A good guide for giving is what you would have been willing to pay to buy the magazine. A small donation, however little, from everyone could make an enormous difference to a local charity and we’ll be sending bucket loads of karma your way!

We asked our readers to nominate a local charity for May’s issue and SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York) was a big favourite. They have been providing York’s special needs community with an invaluable service, from personal development to recreational activities for children and young people with special needs, for almost 25 years.

We hope that you’re enjoying the latest issue of Live&Love York magazine.

In addition to a constant need for donations to keep their doors open, they are always on the look out for volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved whatever your current commitments as their projects run through the school holidays, on weekends, and on some evenings. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to volunteer at SNAPPY subject to the satisfactory completion of the usual CRB check. As well as being an incredibly rewarding experience, you will receive free training workshops and make lots of new friends along the way.

We’ll be reporting back in June’s issue on the difference our readers have made to SNAPPY and everybody they help.
