United Way of Washington County East
2017 Annual Report
LIVE UNITEDgive where you live, work and play
A LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTORDear Donors and Partners,
I want to take this opportunity to recognize and reflect on the impact that our local United Way of Washington County-East had in our community in 2017, none of which could have happened without the generous contributions of money and time from our donors. This year our board’s goal was to not only to increase the amount of financial donations from individuals and businesses, but it was also to standardize the way we track and measure the results of the partner agencies who receive funding from us. As individuals increasingly have more organizations and missions to support, it is important that we can share with you where those contributions are distributed and how those partner agencies who serve our local community are positively changing lives.
In 2017 we were able to grant $683,000 in funding to 21 local agencies representing 41 programs focused on: Youth, Basic Needs, Health and Self-Sufficiency. This year we also funded two new agencies ServeMN and Hope Dental.
ServeMN is an organization that helps students build the literacy skills they need to thrive in school and in life. ServeMN is implemented in several elementary schools within the Stillwater Area Public Schools district. Hope Dental is an organization which is dedicate to serving the homeless, poor and those battling addiction in our community through programs that address the whole person’s needs, including dental health.
Other significant accomplishments in 2017 included:- A new signature event – Women of the Vine. This first year fundraising event raised more than $28,000, with 150 guests and volunteers present. The funds raised help support our 21 partnering agencies. - Record breaking Stuff the Bus campaign raising more than $11,500 in school supplies to help students in our community succeed in the classroom – and was recognized by the Stillwater School District for its excellence. - Enhancements to our Community Investment process, including our partnership with Washington County introducing a Results Based Model to help us better understand our funding application process and the agency outcomes represented. - Youth United was recognized as Washington County’s Public Health Achievement Award winners in the Youth category for their work with Empty Bowls –raising money for youth and hunger issues in our community.
We are committed to be an organization that is driven by vision, mission, values and strategy. And we are dedicated to strengthening and measuring the needs of our community to ensure we maximize the contributions we receive and continue to make a difference in this community for years to come.

YOUTH UNITEDRECEIVED THE 2017 WASHINGTON COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
More than 25 years ago the United Way of Washington County - East formed the Youth United Way. The goal was to teach philanthropy to the next generation of donors and provide opportunities for youth to be involved in their home community. The Youth United Way program is youth-led, electing their own president (or co-presidents) who serve on the United Way of Washington County-East board of directors. They are a peer-led group, determining their own community priority activities with guidance from United Way staff and volunteers. The Youth United Way program provides a unique and valuable experience in organizing, volunteering, time management, leadership and philanthropy for a wide variety of teens in grades 6-12.
Local organizations who have received funding from Youth United Way:

COMMUNITY ADVANCEMENTCommunity Advancement was created in 2016 and consists of members of the United Way of Washington County East Board of Directors, healthcare professionals, Washington County professionals, business professionals and community members.
The vision for this group is to understand our partner agencies’ current abilities and their plans for reaching to community needs.
This group hosted 2 meetings in 2016 and during this time we engaged in dialogue to help further understand the changing needs and the funding process with our agencies. We have partnered with Washington County introducing a Results Based Accountability model to help us better understand our application process and the agency outcomes represented.
More than 40 trained volunteers manage the Community Investment process. The Community Investment Committee consists of United Way of Washington County- East Board Members, and our four Community Investment Review Panels are staffed by trained volunteers from throughout our Community. In 2017, we had 10 new volunteers as a part of the Community Investmentprocess. We held a new volunteer orientation to help new volunteers obtain a holistic understanding of our organization and the overall Community Investment process.
Our funding process invites agencies working in our Community to submit grant applications for specific programs that are categorized under one of our four focus areas. The four focus areas are: Youth, Basic Needs, Health, and Self-Sufficiency. Programs address immediate or emerging needs, with special focus on those that emphasize prevention and early problem solving.
Financial Highlights
In 2017, our total expenses were $ 1,051,406 We invested 80% on programs services, 11.4% for Administrative and General Expenses and
