Welcome to RugbyTown USA, Glendale, Colorado; and thank you for joining us for the internationally-acclaimed RugbyTown Sevens Tournament!

In just five short years since its inception in 2012, a bid to the RugbyTown Sevens has become one of the most sought-after invitations in the rugby

world. Drawing such quality competitors as the Olympic Gold medalists from Fiji, the Fiji Selects, this tournament showcases the best that international rugby has to offer. Along with Fiji, the 2017 roster includes teams from Great Britain, Canada, the Cayman Islands, and across the United States.

In addition to the world-class competitors from all over the globe, we are also pleased once again to host a tournament within a tournament---the US Armed Forces 7s Championship. We are proud to provide a showcase for the fine military teams that represent our country, and the players who come from duty stations all over the world. We invite you to be with us at the end of play on Saturday for a special ceremony in remembrance of our fallen military ruggers.

Saturday begins with a welcoming ceremony, featuring members of our youth rugby program carrying the flags of the countries and armed forces teams competing this year. Come out and see the future rugby players who could very well be playing in this tournament years from now!

And don’t forget to enjoy the 2017 Bruises & Brews Beerfest on the Festival Plaza on Saturday. This year we have 22 breweries, 4 distilleries, and 2 cideries represented from across Colorado, along with performances by the acclaimed pipe band, the Mile Highlanders. Rugby, beer, and music---it doesn’t get any better than that!

Every August, Infinity Park hosts the RugbyTown 7s Tournament, featuring world-class play with teams from across the globe. In 2017, the tournament’s sixth year of competition, 20 teams, including teams from all five branches of the U.S. Military, will compete for a $10,000 winner-take-all purse.

The RugbyTown 7s Tournament is emblematic of the sport’s growing popularity, and as an international testament to that growth, the exciting, fast-paced 7s play was part of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games – for the first time in nearly a century. 2017 will see an expanded national and international team presence, including the Fiji Selects – members of which played in Fiji’s gold medal winning performance at the 2016 Olympics.

Rugby Sevens, a quicker variation of traditional 15-a-side Rugby Union play, features two seven-minute halves and puts the importance of a team’s speed, strength, and stamina at the fore. Played on the same size field as traditional rugby, players have considerably more room to move. The shorter game clock means that an entire tournament can be played over the course of a weekend – more than sixty matches in the case of the annual Glendale event. Glendale’s RugbyTown 7s is one of the premier tournaments in the country.

DENVER 7S SELECTSThe Denver Rugby 7s Selects are a regional Elite Select team focused on finding and developing players from the Western U.S., and includes players from the U.S. Olympic team. In 2017, the Denver 7s Selects placed 1st in the Rio Grande Celtic 7s and, 3rd in the Las Vegas Invitational Elite 7s. They enter the RugbyTown 7s as back-to-back defending champions, winning the tournament in 2015 and 2016, and coming in second in 2014.

RAF SPITFIRESOne of two British armed forces teams playing in the tournament, the Spitfires are named after the famous fighter plane that British airmen flew throughout World War II. They have competed and found success in tournaments around the world, including winning the shield trophy in the 2016 RugbyTown 7s tournament.

RUGBY UTAHUtah is becoming one of the nation’s rugby hotspots, fielding more than 60 teams and developing players who go on to play at higher levels, including the US Olympic team. Rugby Utah draws players from across the intermountain region and were the 2016 RugbyTown 7s Bowl trophy winners, as well as the 2016 USA Rugby Club 7s National Champions.

1823 TIGERS1823 Tigers have grown from a local touring side to an internationally respected rugby, brand with teams traveling across the globe looking for new places to compete. Over the last decade alone, they have competed internationally in several tournaments, and are excited to return to Glendale again in 2017. After showing well in 2016 and taking home third-place in 2013 during the early years of the tournament, they are a force to contend with.

UPRIGHT RUGBY ROGUESThe Upright Rugby Rogues call Ontario, Canada, home. The Upright Rogues provide comprehensive year-round playing and player development programs that compete at high-levels internationally. Returning for the third time, the Upright Rogues look to improve upon their 2015 third-place finish at RugbyTown 7s.

AIR FORCEThe Airmen represent the Air Force from all over the world, including those stationed in Japan, Korea, Europe, and all over the U.S. They earned a second-place finish in the Armed Forces Championships last year and pride themselves on aggressive, go-forward play, and are focused on team play. Their blue and black kit represent the colors of the AF, and their logo represents Sevens and the concept of flight. In addition to the 7s team, the Air Force rugby family includes a 15s team and a women’s team, the first women’s rugby team in the U.S. armed forces.

ALL ARMYThe Army returns to Infinity Park as four-time defending champions of the Armed Forces Championship. Last year, the Army defeated Air Force 55-5. “The formula started [six] years ago,” Army Head Coach Col. Mark Drown said last year in an interview with Armed Forces Sports. “For us to be successful, we needed to find a network of young players, some veteran players and establishing a work ethic and code of conduct among our rugby community.”

COAST GUARDThe Armed Forces Rugby Championship is the only Armed Forces competition where all Five Service branches are represented individually, with the Coast Guard competing as their own squad since 1983. Normally, Coast Guard athletes compete with the Navy throughout the year. Over the past three years, the Coast Guard Rugby team has sent four players to the All Armed Services select side. The team focuses on executing rugby fundamentals consistently due to the limited time they get to compete together as a team each year. The current team is comprised of pay grades E-3 to O-4 so the range in military experience is vastly different. The Coast Guard has members from every community within the Coast Guard servicing all 11 mission sets.

MARINESThe US Marines were the last non-Army team to win the US Armed Forces Championship taking the honor in 2012. The U.S. Marine Corps is one of seven uniformed services of the United States. It operates posts on land and as well as aboard sea going Amphibious Assault Ships. Created in 1775, the Marine Corps has been a component of the U.S. Department of the Navy since 1834, working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics. The US Marines Men’s 7s team is comprised of active duty and reserve Marines servicemen.

ALL NAVYThe United States Navy is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It was estimated to be larger than the next 13 largest navies combined in terms of battle fleet tonnage in 2009. It operates 289 ships in active service and more than 3,700 aircraft. The US Navy Men’s 7s team is comprised of active duty and reserve Navy servicemen.

POOL CATAVUS ALL-STARSDesigned to unlock the potential and creativity of all rugby players, Atavus provides structured high performance training for individuals and groups. While based in Seattle, Washington, all players are currently a part of the Atavus Academy or have been selected through USA Rugby Mens Resident Camps around the nation. Formerly the Serevi Selects, this team finished in second place in both the 2015 and 2012 RugbyTown 7s, while taking home the Plate in 2013.

CANADA MAPLE LEAFSThe Canada Maple Leafs are the development team for Rugby Canada and should showcase some young and upcoming national team talent from our neighbors in the north.

RAMBLIN JESTERSThe Ramblin Jesters are in invitational 7s team from the UK. Sporting the most colorful uniforms of the tournament field, the Jesters will surely stand out. In addition to being visually striking, the Jesters’ on-field play will turn heads. They pride themselves on bringing “flair, speed and their own unique style to the game.” They have found success, winning both the Copenhagen 7s and the London Floodlit 7s last year, and taking third place in RugbyTown 7s.

USA COLLEGIATE ALL-AMERICANSThe USA Collegiate All-Americans pull together some of the best college age talent in the nation for high-performance rugby training and competition. Over the years this outfit has helped to development many of the current USA Men’s 7s National Team members. At RugbyTown 7s, this team has had a lot of success, taking home the championship in 2013, finishing as Bowl Champions in 2014 and Plate Champions in 2012.

FIJI SELECTSThe Fiji Selects are a newly minted Fijian team comprised of some of the world’s best rugby players. A bulk of the Fiji Selects lineup are gold-medal winners from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

POOL DBRITISH ARMYYou can’t miss the British Army team, whose uniforms are the same shade of bright scarlet made famous by the British Army’s trademark coats of the same color. The British Army rugby team trains out of Fort Blockhouse in Gosport, Hampshire, and recently won the Bowl at the Rosslyn Park London Floodlit 7s and lost narrowly in the final of the Bournemouth 7s Festival. Fun fact: The core of the first teams fielded by the Army were largely made up by Fijian rugby players who had been recruited into the British Army to help stem the shortfall of British recruits in the 1990s.

CAYMAN ISLANDSCayman Rugby has a long tradition. Its founding in 1970 took place, appropriately, over a few beers on a beach. At the Cayman Islands’ last appearance in RugbyTown 7s in 2013 they finished as Shield Champions.

GLENDALE MERLINSThis will be the first year that Glendale’s team plays under the Merlins moniker instead of the Raptors. The Merlin, a bird of prey known for its in-flight speed and agility, will become the mascot for all Glendale teams, except for the men’s elite team, which will continue to compete under the Raptors name in Major League Rugby in 2018.

NEGRO Y AZULBased out of Austin, Texas, Negro y Azul is a returning participant to RugbyTown 7s. Their team name, which means “black and blue” in Spanish, fits well with the Bruises & Brews festival that takes place during the tournament. The team name references two Austin-area rugby teams, the Blacks and the Huns, from which this all-star team draws many of its players.

SOCAL GRIFFINSOne of the oldest unions in the country, SoCal Griffins Rugby Football Union was founded in the 1930s by horror movie star Boris Karloff. Always providing a thriller, you will be star struck by this representative side from Southern California, as they come with great talent, flair and experience.

the object

Like almost any other sport, the goal in rugby 7s is to score as many points as possible. The game is quick and dynamic, played over two seven-minute halves. Teams of seven players each advance the ball down the field by passing, running, and kicking the ball in order to score a try, similar to a touchdown in American football.

the players

As its name implies, rugby 7s is played with seven players on the field for each team. The players are divided into two groups, forwards and backs.

There are three forward players: two props and a hooker. The forwards are the first line of defense against the speedy back players, and also are key elements of scrums and lineouts. While forwards in the fifteens game are big and beefy, like gridiron linemen, sevens forwards are quicker in order to keep up with the speedier pace of the game.

Four players make up the back row: a scrumhalf, a flyhalf, a center and a fullback. The scrumhalf is the link between the forwards and backs, and has to be able to perform both functions. The flyhalf, center, and fullback do most of the ball handling on offense, and are the last line of defense to take down their back counterparts should they get loose.

The field, known as the pitch, is 100 meters long by 70 meters wide with two ‘H’ shaped goalposts on either end.

the scoring system

Try (5 points): A try is scored by touching the ball to the ground in the opponent’s try zone.

Conversion Kick (2 points): After a try, a team can tack on another two points by kicking the ball through the goal posts.

Penalty Kick (3 points): When a team commits a penalty, the other team has the option of putting three points on the board by kicking the ball through the goal posts. The spot of the kick depends on where the penalty was committed.

Drop Goal (3 points): A drop goal is scored by drop kicking the ball through the goal posts in open play.

loose play

Maul: Occurs when the player carrying the ball is held by one or more opponents and one or more teammates. A maul forms when a player keeps his feet from a tackle, and a teammate (or teammates) grab on and help him push forward.

Ruck: Happens after a tackle when the ball is on the ground and one or more players from each team comes in contact trying to get possession of the ball. More or less it’s fighting for a loose ball, same as in football. Except in rugby, players must use their feet to try to win or keep possession.

Scrum: A contest for the ball involving the forwards who bind together and push against the other team’s forwards for possession of the ball.

Line-out: It’s a cross between an inbounds play and a jump ball that you would see in basketball. Both teams line up opposite of each other before one team throws the ball through the middle of the two sides. It’s the job of the inbounding team to jump up and take possession.

why did the whistle blow?

Offside: Rugby’s offside law restricts where on the field players can be, to ensure there is space to attack and defend. In general, a player is in an offside position if that player is further forward (nearer to the opponents’ goal line) than the teammate who is carrying the ball or the teammate who last played the ball. Being in an offside position is not, in itself, an offense, but an offside player may not take part in the game until they are on-side again. If an offside player takes part in the game, that player will be penalized.

Forward Pass or Knock-On: If a pass has gone forwards, or a handling error has resulted in a knock-on, a scrum will have been awarded to the non-offending team.

Failure to release player or ball: After a tackle, the tackler must immediately release the ball carrier, and the ball carrier must immediately release the ball. Failure on either of these counts limits a fair contest for possession. If release does not occur within a reasonable time frame, the referee will award a penalty to the non-offending team.

Failure to Roll Away: Any players on the ground when a ruck or maul is formed must immediately roll away from the ball, so as to allow continuity of play for the team in possession. Failure to do so will result in the award of a penalty to the non-offending team.

Joining Ruck/Maul from the side: When joining a ruck or maul, all players must do so from behind the feet of the last teammate. If they join from the side, they are in an offside position and taking part in the game, then this will immediately be penalized.

Un-Playable Ball in Ruck or Maul: If the ball becomes un-playable in a ruck or maul, e.g., underneath players who are on the ground, but neither team is at fault, the referee will award a scrum to the team who was in possession before the ruck or maul was formed.

Yellow Card (Sin Bin): A player receiving a yellow card is sent off the pitch for a 2 minute interval. The offending team will play down a player for that time period.
