time to raise awareness about the importance of keeping our hearts healthy. The Board of Directors and Staff
of Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi extend our hearts to you; we wish you a month filled with
unconditional love and support, and we encourage you to take charge in caring for your health.

Aloha,
Happy Heart Health month! I just wanted to take a moment to remind us all to take care of our hearts – this month and all months. Heart disease kills way too many of us each year, so please remember to choose healthy foods, limit your salt, sugar and fat intake, quit smoking, and get moving!
Come visit us at Hui Mālama and we can help you out in all those areas. Also, we have to make sure to take care of our hearts that are “outside of our body” and give aloha to our family, friends, co-workers, neighbors – anybody and everybody that is important to us. Encourage them to take care of their hearts in all ways. By working together we help make Hawai‘i Island the best place to live. We’re Hui Mālama - come see us, and let us help you live longer and feel better!

A healthy recipe from Aunty in the Pantry
Taro Salad 3 cups cooked and diced taro ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup grated carrots 2 teaspoons chopped round onions ½ cup chopped bell peppers ½ teaspoon salt (optional) Low-fat/light mayonnaise to moisten Combine taro, celery, carrots, round onions, and bell peppers. Mix lightly with mayonnaise. Serve on lettuce leaves. May garnish with parsley and a sprinkle of paprika.
The Importance of Being There For Each Other

As we look into another year, let us focus for a moment on the importance and value of sharing, encouraging, supporting, and being there for each other through life’s journey.
Just having you tell a loved one, or a friend, or a relative the value and the lessons you gained from someone sharing their story of living with cancer, or learning how to do their blood sugar testing, or even the importance of keeping doctor’s appointments can be so uplifting to a loved one or a friend struggling with their challenges of a health need.
Let’s remember to continue through this new year, 2016, with the hope, love, encouragement and support that will empower each of us to live another healthy and happy year. Share the message and they will feel the love.

The Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi Cancer Support Group, Mālama Ka Pili Pa‘a (MKPP) will venture to Ka‘u on February 26 to connect with folks about their experiences with cancer (personal and in caring for family members) and the wisdom that comes from being part of a support group.
The MKPP Traveling Panel will reach out to the Ka‘u Community and make it’s way to other parts of the island. MKPP currently meets twice a month in Hilo.
If you or someone you know is dealing with cancer, sign up with Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi for help with education, navigation, and resources, and be sure to join Mālama Ka Pili Pa‘a for ongoing fellowship, support, and hands-on education. Call us at 969-9220.

The Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi Hilo Diabetes Support Group sparked like fireworks in January 2016. After taking a short break, group members resumed monthly meetings to discuss and support one another through their journey with diabetes. Aloha mai kakou! As we strive towards the restoration and perpetuation of traditional Native Hawaiian healing practices, Hui
Mālama’s Traditional Hawaiian Healing Program, Ho‘ola Na Kanaka ‘Oiwi is offering Individualized Class
Levels in La‘au Lapa‘au, Ho‘oponopono, Lomi Lomi Ha Ha and La‘au Kahea. Class sessions are for five (5)
consecutive weeks, providing education about the importance of implementing traditional Native Hawaiian healing methods for physical and spiritual well-being of self, and family.
Our recent Level 1 La‘au Lapa‘au Classes in Hilo focused on teaching oral traditions through learning about
proper healing and gathering of la‘au protocols, hands-on group activities and discussions, as well as having the
opportunity to not only learn in a classroom, but in the natural elements.
With growth comes the opportunity for new project ideas like a Native Hawaiian La‘au Lapa‘au Garden, which is
currently in progress by our Traditional Healing Program Project Manager, Brandon Kobashigawa. Why a healing garden? To provide an additional hands-on approach to educating about traditional Native Hawaiian
healing practices, through propagation of la‘au lapa‘au (healing plants).

According to the American Heart Association, about 2200 Americans die each day from heart disease. That’s about one every 40 seconds and 46 % of them have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Taking care of your blood pressure and blood sugars are important aspects to taking care of your health. Not to mention they decrease your risk of heart attacks and strokes by 45%. Eating healthier, being active, and drinking water also helps us take control of our health.
Did you know that laughing may actually help your heart? According to Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, attending cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, laughter can decrease stress hormones, reduce artery inflammation, and increase HDL or the “good” cholesterol. Once you start laughing, it forces you to feel better and the effects can last 24 hours. So there is some truth in the age-old expression “Laughter is the best Medicine.” Have you laughed today? Laugh and be merry it will make your heart happy.
