ALLERGIES Seasonal allergies are back in full effect with springtime.
Allergens such as pollen, mold, trees, weeds, and grass can
bother your allergies. These symptoms start in February and
can last until the summer, sometimes even the fall.
It is important to figure out what causes allergy attacks so that
you can avoid them.
You can reduce your risk by:
• Avoiding what triggers your allergies.
• Keep the allergens out of your home by showering and
changing your clothes when you get home.
• Eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated.
Speak with your doctor if you have allergy symptoms. They
can help you find the best treatment for your allergies.

ASTHMAAsthma is a manageable disease with the right
treatment. If you have asthma, you must be able to
recognize warning signs of your condition getting
worse. Notify your doctor immediately if:
• Your symptoms occur more often, more severe,
or are causing you to lose sleep at night.
• You are limiting your normal activities or missing
work due to your asthma.
• Your asthma medicines no longer work as well
as they used to.
Make sure to schedule regular asthma checkups
with your doctor.
TOBACCO QUIT LINEDid you know your health begins to benefit within
20 minutes of quitting smoking? These benefits
continue over a 10 year period. By quitting, you
reduce your risk of premature death and illness.
Tips for quitting:
• Brush your teeth often for a fresh and clean
feeling.
• Chew cinnamon or mint flavored gum- this
makes tobacco taste bad.
• Don’t carry anything tobacco related with you.
• Stay positive!
If you need help to quit smoking, please contact
the Utah Tobacco Quit Line at 800-QUIT NOW
(784-8669).

SUN SAFETYWith summer fun comes summer sun. Make sure you and your family are taking the
right precautions to stay happy and healthy this summer.
• Wear sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and reapply every two hours or after
swimming.
• Wear long sleeved shirts and pants, and hats if possible. Darker, dry clothing offers
the best protection.
• Avoid the sun when it’s strongest (usually 10am to 4pm)
• Seek shade under umbrellas when you need a break.
• Babies under six months should be kept out of the sun whenever possible. Keep
their bodies covered if they need to be in the sun.
Staying hydrated is important, too. Make sure you and your family are drinking water
often and urinating every two to four hours. Your urine should be light yellow to clear
to show hydration.

OPIOID USEOpioid addiction is currently widespread in the United States. There are different types
of opioids. Prescription opioids are drugs likes OxyContin and Vicodin. Heroin is an
example of an illegal opioid. Many drug habits start with a prescription from a doctor.
Prescription drug misuse is a serious issue that can lead to:
• Harmful health effects
• Overdose
• Addiction
• Death
Addiction can happen to anyone. If you or a loved one is dealing with a drug
problem, talk to your doctor about what your options are. If you have questions
about your prescription, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Our Nurse Advice line is also
available 24/7 at 1-855-354-9006. Know that help is available to you and those you
love when you need it.

MEDICATION SAFETYMedicine can be used to treat many illnesses and
diseases, help relieve pain, and manage chronic pain
symptoms. Medicine is a great tool and generally safe
when taken as prescribed by a doctor. However, there
are always risks with taking medicine. Drug abuse can
affect anyone.
To reduce risk, make sure you:
• Keep track of your prescriptions.
• Follow directions given by your doctor.
• Ask questions and know what you are taking.
• Do not take anyone else’s medicine.
• Monitor children while they take their medications.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any
questions about your medications. You can also call our
Nurse Advice Line 24/7 at 1-855-354-9006.

Knowing when to go to the emergency room or go
to urgent care can be tough. Sometimes injuries and
sickness come suddenly. You are left having to decide
where to go for help. A true emergency is when you
think your life is in danger, a body part is badly hurt, or
you are in great pain.
You should always try to see your primary care doctor
first. If your illness or injury occurs during normal
business hours, contact your doctor’s office as soon as
you possibly can. Sometimes doctor’s offices have same
day appointments available. They can also help you
decide if your injury or illness is an emergency.
Remember, Health Choice Utah offers a 24/7 Nurse
Advice Line for our members, providing the peace of
mind that medical questions can be answered at any
time. A nurse is always available to discuss symptoms.
Call anytime at 800-322-8670.

ARE YOUR KIDS GETTING TOO MUCH MEDIA?Media is everywhere today and it can be hard to
monitor your child’s consumption. It’s important
to know the positive and negative effects that
media can have on your child’s growth. Too much
media means not enough time for school, friends,
or family.
Media isn’t bad for your kids. There are positive
effects. You want to make sure your child has a
healthy relationship and balance with media.
Create a media plan that dictates how long, how
often, and what your child is watching. Each
family’s media plan will be different since it should
be custom to your family.

WELL-CHILD VISITSAre your children visiting their primary care doctor annually? Children under the age
of 18 should see a doctor at least once a year for their well-child visit. These visits are
to make sure your child is growing and healthy.
This is a good time to:
• Let your doctor know of any behavioral changes such as mood swings.
• Changes in home environment such as separation or divorce.
• Changes at school such as a new school or new teacher.
Make sure to bring your child’s medical records with you such as shots the child has
had and family medical history.

• Mastique chicle con sabor a canela o menta;
tabaco llamando al 800-QUIT NOW (784-8669).

• efectos nocivos para la salud;
• sobredosis;
• adicción;
• muerte.

• cualquier cambio de comportamiento, como cambios de humor;

• lo conocerá a usted y a sus antecedentes médicos;
• lo ayudará a obtener la atención que necesita;
• lo ayudará a encontrar un especialista cuando sea necesario;
