El Pilates, es un sistema de entrenamiento físico y mental desarrollado por Joseph Pilates a principios del Siglo XX, quien lo

ideó basándose en su conocimiento de distintas especialidades como gimnasia, traumatología y yoga, uniendo el dinamismo y la fuerza muscular con el control mental, la respiración y la relajación.

En sus principios fue llamado Contrología (Contrology), por el propio Pilates, debido a que recalca el uso de la mente para controlar el cuerpo, pero buscando el equilibrio y la unidad entre ambos. El método se centra en el desarrollo de los músculos internos para mantener el equilibrio corporal y dar estabilidad y fi rmeza a la columna vertebral, por lo que es muy usado como terapia en rehabilitación y para, por ejemplo, prevenir y curar el dolor de espalda.

Se practica en todo el mundo y debe una parte de su cada vez mayor popularidad a que es practicado por personajes famosos del mundo de la música, el cine, la danza o el deporte. Y es que el Pilates es bueno para personas de todas las edades y de cualquier condición Física, inclusive está muy recomendado para mujeres saliendo del embarazo.

Aunque el método Pilates se ha desarrollado y ha dado lugar a una gran cantidad de estilos y aplicaciones distintas, existen 6 principios fundamentales que deben estar siempre presentes:

Ahora es importante hablar de lo que el Pilates puede hacer por nosotros, nuestro cuerpo y nuestra mente. Todos

los ejercicios están hechos de forma que el abdomen sea el centro muscular del cuerpo, dando como resultado la fortaleza y tonifi cación de la columna a nivel lumbar, que es la base del resto de la columna vertebral. Tales ejercicios son completos, trabajan con intensidad varios músculos simultáneamente incluyendo los músculos más profundos, que son los que sostienen el esqueleto óseo.

El método Pilates hace que la mente, el cuerpo y el espíritu trabajen como uno. Mediante la respiración y la concentración se logra un estado de relajación global permitiendo eliminar el estrés y las tensiones musculares, este último en particular es uno de los aspectos más apreciados del Pilates pues le da a las personas la posibilidad de romper con la ajetreada rutina y encontrar ese momento de tranquilidad y paz que muchas veces hace tanta falta. Tesla has revolutionized the entire car industry with its introduction of the luxury full electric vehicle and after 3 years of solid growth the Tesla has proven it is here to stay. In the next few years Tesla Motors plans continue its popularity of the luxury Model S and

follow up with an SUV titled the Model X and in 2017 plans to release a sedan in the $30,000 range. While most of the electric vehicles we have seen are small and economical the Tesla comes in as a game changer.After driving the Tesla Model S along the Palmetto Expressway I can tell you that the Tesla is the ultimate electric driving vehicle. Not only is the exterior of the car extremely stylish and attention grabbing, the interior is very elegant and comfortable. Everything in the vehicle is controlled by the large 17 inch HD display screen. This touch screen has a full time internet connection and is able to control all of the vehicles functions. The car is so advanced that when new features are available all you have to do is leave the car in park for 2 hours and download the latest system onto the cars computer. At the beginning of 2014 Tesla announced free internet connectivity and internet radio for 4 years on all vehicles. Now there is no need to worry about incurring data charges on your phone when using your GPS or Pandora music. With the Tesla you can simply type in the name of your favorite artist and a list of songs and information pops up – touch the name of the song and in less than a second the music starts playing.Safety is a big issue when driving in Miami – owners of the Tesla can rest easy knowing that the car has received a perfect safety score from the NHTSA in every single category and subcategory available. Out of a possible 5 stars the Tesla received 5.4 stars and set a new industry record for safety. It is considered by many experts to be “The safest car ever built”. This is in large part due to the fact that it is built with an aluminum body which is much stronger than the steel used in other vehicles.Performance is where the Tesla truly shines like no other. There are 2 engine options for the Tesla model S, the 60 kW·h battery and the 85 kW·h battery. Going at a constant speed of 55 mph, a fully charged 60kw-h battery will last for 230 miles, while the 85 kW-h battery will last for 320 miles. The 85 kW-h battery is slightly more expensive but has a higher acceleration rate. The 60 kw-h batteries have a higher driving range. At 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds the Tesla model S is the fastest electric car ever built. The speed, combined with the agility of its lightweight structure, makes the Tesla S a smooth and speedy ride.

Charging the car is convenient and cost effective. Anywhere there is an accessible electrical outlet is a place that can charge the battery for the Tesla, though charging times is dependent on the outlet. The cost for driving 25 miles is only about 1 dollar, making the estimated annual cost to be only about $650 to $700. At the moment Tesla is building hundreds of charging stations across the USA so a cross country trip can be completed in the electric vehicle.The 85 kw-h also now has an infi nite mile 8 year warranty, a length that exactly matches the estimated life of its battery pack. Starting at around $60,000 for the base model and around $85,000 for a fully equipped model the Tesla is no cheap car. Once you factor in the $7,500 tax rebate for buying a Tesla and the monthly gas savings the Tesla Model S may prove to be cheaper in the long term. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced that the company will allow its technology patents be used by anyone in good faith and as long as they do not fi le patent suits against Tesla, or copy their designs directly. Allowing open patents is very rare these days and just proves how much Musk wants to better the world and develop sustainable clean energy.

Having both of my parents in the medical fi eld I was brought up to take care of my body and eat nutritious foods. In 2006 I started my career in the Faculty of Medicine (School of Nutrition and Dietetics) at the Central University of Venezuela, and studied until

the 7th Semester. Then in 2009, I was awarded a scholarship by Florida International University and graduated two years later. I started working with various companies and hospitals until 2013 when I started my company called “No es Dieta” which gave life to my whole concept and my work philosophy.

HOW DID “NO ES DIETA” PROJECT BEGIN?No es Dieta was created from my experience every day with my patients. They told me “Lorena I am doing my diet perfectly “ and my answer was always “Remember this is not a Diet, it’s your meal plan.” For me it has always been important to TEACH my patients to EAT HEALTH and create easy eating habits, instead of “dieting” to help them lose 10 kg, but then again recovered.The philosophy of No es Dieta:1. Count Nutrients instead of Calories2. View food as energy3. Educate our minds4. Increase consumption of plant based foods and less animal food.5. Decrease processed food.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO DRINK WATER AND STAY HYDRATED?It is extremely important, in fact you’ve more than likely heard this before...you can live for days, weeks, and even months without food, but 2 days without water will kill you. A good recommendation is for men is roughly 3 liters (around 13 cups/day) and for women is 2.2 liters (9 cups/day). However, the mo st important thing is to avoid “feeling thirsty” or having your lips all dry. When that happens is a physical sign that your cells are dehydrated.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY WHEN YOU DON’T DRINK ENOUGH WATER?When you don’t get enough water, every cell of your body is affected. When you sweat, you lose a lot of electrolytes, including sodium, potassium and chloride, which are essential to your body’s functions. Thirst and a dry mouth are not the fi rst signs of dehydration. In fact, by the time you notice these symptoms, your body’s cells are already craving water. Thirst is your body giving you a heads-up, but your body is already feeling the effects of too little water. Fatigue, headaches, inability to focus, dizziness and lack of strength are all possible signs of dehydration.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO EAT/DRINK FOR BREAKFAST?You want to aim for a breakfast that combines good carbs, high in fi ber and some high quality protein. I will give you three options:

1 Warm Oatmeal: Half a cup of oatmeal (Rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Fiber and potassium) made with unsweetened Almond Milk + 3

Strawberries + 1 spoon of Chia Seeds (Plant based protein high in Fiber )

2 Green Omelet: 2 Egg whites made with a cup of Kale + Spinach + mushrooms. Add a slice of whole grain bread (high in Fiber) + Coffee

made with almond milk

3 Cleanse Shake: 1 Cup of spinach + Half green Apple + 2 celery Sticks + 3 squeezed lemons + 1 spoon of Chia Seeds + 1 Spoon of Hemp Seeds

(Plant based protein high in Fiber, antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids).

IS THE JUICING/SMOOTHIE TREND A GOOD WAY TO CONSUME VEGETABLES AND FRUITS?Yes of course, mainly if you don’t like eating your vegetables, or you don’t have a lot of time to prepare a complete meal in the morning.Consuming green smoothies is a good way to get vegetables in your diet, but remember to include green vegetables (Spinach - Kale - Celery ) + Water or Almond Milk + a Fruit rich in antioxidant (berries - Kiwi - Green Apple ) + High quality plant based protein ( Chia and hemp Seeds)

WHAT ARE 5 FOODS WE SHOULD ALWAYS AVOID?1. Cow’s Milk 2. Red Meat 3. Sugar 4. Refi ned and processed products 5. Sodas and Energy Drinks

WHAT ARE 5 FOODS WE SHOULD ALWAYS EAT?- Green Leafy Vegetables- Beans- Fruits (specially the ones high in Antioxidants and Fiber)- High Quality Protein (Fish / Turkey / Quinoa)- Nuts and Seeds

HOW MANY MEALS PER DAY SHOULD WE HAVE?Between 5-6 small meals.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND YOUR CLIENTS THAT ARE OVERWEIGHT AND ARE TIRED OF TRYING DIETS THAT DON’T WORK?I recommend for them to start implementing small changes in their food habits.

Although social media can be a positive way for our children to connect with others, social media is also a source of concern for parents, guardians and teachers.Social media isn’t just interacting on networks like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Social media is defi ned as any place online where a person interacts with others by posting, commenting or sharing media. Social media includes personal blogs, websites, wikis, chat rooms, YouTube, and videos posted online, as well as comments posted in reaction to shared material. “Many children using the Internet don’t realize that social media includes almost everything they do online,” says DSA Technology Teacher Michael Babler. “More importantly, students don’t always understand the future effects of their social media use today.”In response to the need for social media education, students at Divine Savior Academy attend a social media seminar on the fi rst day of school. This seminar not only informs students of the rules and the responsibilities associated with using these platforms. This list of guidelines is presented to DSA students to encourage positive experiences when using social media:BE RESPONSIBLE. It is every student’s responsibility to use social media in a positive way. Students are held accountable for content they post online. Remember that if you share information, you are responsible for it. Even if you did not take the picture, make the comment or write the article, you are held responsible for sharing the information. USE CAUTION. Do not post or share the following: confi dential or personal information about yourself or anyone else, passwords or login information, copyrighted items and photos or videos without permission.CONSIDER THE FUTURE. What you post online now will follow you forever. Do not post anything that you would not say or do in front of your parents, teachers, school administration or future employers. BE HONEST, thoughtful and respectful. Avoid obscene or crude language, sexual comments, bullying (also known as cyberbullying),

material related to alcohol, drugs or illegal behavior, discussions that are harmful to the reputation of others, including your school.Accept social media invitations only from people that you know.CYBERBULLYING is a serious offense. Avoid it and report cases that you see to parents, teachers and administration.USE PRIVACY SETTINGS, but remember that even with the strictest privacy settings, your information can become public. Information that you delete is stored online indefi nitely. Assume that whatever you post online is public and permanent.It is important to note that most social media sites have an age restriction of 13 years old, due to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (also known as COPPA). According to COPPA, it is illegal to collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without the consent of a parent or guardian. “It is crucial to teach our children not only the dangers of social media, but also the responsible use of these platforms. I encourage parents and guardians to begin conversations with their children at home and to seek support from their educational institutions,” comments DSA Principal Ben Troge.Divine Savior Academy is a Christian academy dedicated to excellence.
