Central is electing its next Mayor, City Council and Chief of Police on April 5th, and this is your first opportunity to meet and hear from the candidates. Election Central PRESS RELEASE Clerk of Court Doug Welborn has announced that his office will be qualifying candidates for the April 5, 2014 election for City of Central municipal races. Qualifying for the City of Central’s Mayor, Police Chief and Council Members will be held beginning at 8:00 a.m. and lasting until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12th; Thursday, February 13th; and Friday, February 14th. Qualifying will be held at the Clerk of Court’s downtown office in Room 179 of the City Hall building and at the Coursey Branch office at 10500 Coursey Boulevard on all three days from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 PM Additionally, Clerk of Court staff will be available to qualify candidates at the Central City Hall, 13421 Hooper Road, Suite 9 on Wednesday, February 12th from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on the first day of qualifying. “We will be on hand in Central for the opening day of qualifying,” Welborn said. “Candidates from the northern cities in our parish have always appreciated the convenience of local qualifying and we are pleased to continue to offer this service for their elections.”

From the City of Central During the month of January 2014 in the city of Central, a total of 11 new residential permits were issued. The total valuation of these permits was $2,536,214. Within these January permits, two were issued in Burlington Lakes with an average valuation of $170,162; two in Twin Lakes Estates with an average valuation of $183,384; one on Lovett Rd with a valuation of $382,312; four in Village Lakes with an average valuation of $241,223; one on

McCullough Rd valued at $256,638; and one in Bellingrath Estates on Keystone Ave valued at $225,278. Building valuation is the price based upon the square footage of the home used for permitting purposes. The actual selling price of the home is usually higher than the valuation and depends upon amenities installed by the builder. On the commercial side, a permit was applied for a 2,910 addition for Friendship Baptist Church on Comite Drive.

When it comes to “quality of life in Central,” there is no issue as diametrically opposed to that concept as the Baton Rouge Loop. That’s why now, over two years since the last official meeting was held on the topic, questions about a Loop through Central evoke much passion. And that’s why the issue often becomes a political hot potato to be tossed at candidates during election season. To set the record straight, I oppose the proposed BR Loop coming through Central. In fact, what many voters may not know, is that while others were worrying about the Loop back in 2011 and its potential impact to our community, I was researching. I made many public records requests for Loop minutes, bylaws, and financials, and I gathered information from other parishes involved in the discussion. I did not wait to see what EBR politicians might say or how the Baton Rouge media might frame the discussion; rather, I searched the facts and presented them to my community and our leadership, equipping them with powerful tools to fight back!

Did That Kill the Loop? I even published my findings in two Central Speaks articles in December, 2011 and January, 2012: In the article titled “The Truth About the Loop,” I revealed that state law prohibits the BR Loop anywhere in Central without

written approval from Central City leaders, and in the article “Loop OOPS!,” I exposed all of the legal and procedural problems of the BR Loop Board and Corporation that would likely not withstand a legal challenge. I won’t make the claim that my efforts are to credit for having ultimately “stopped” the BR Loop in Central, but I will point out that there has not been a single meeting of the Loop Board and not a single public hearing in the 2-plus years since my research was made public and my articles were published.

Will the Loop Come Back? The proposed BR Loop would irreparably damage our great community and the quality of life we cherish in Central. But malicious discussion of the issue can also cause damage to our community when some politicians try to make false claims about other candidates’ positions on the matter. I’ve stated in my Contract With Central that as your next mayor, I would work to improve infrastructure and traffic flow in our city – but NOT by allowing groups outside of Central, who have no concept of what this community needs or wants, make decisions FOR us. I strongly oppose the proposed BR Loop and I will fight for Central’s right to stand sovereign. In fact, I’m the ONLY mayoral candidate who hasn’t just talked against the proposed BR Loop, I’ve done something about it – I did the research that affirmed our city’s right to say “NO LOOP.” I’m also the ONLY mayoral candidate who supported the creation of Central’s city and public school district – the very centerpieces of our quality of life in Central. For me, improving our “quality of life in Central” is not an empty political promise, but a passionate belief that I’ve been willing to work for and support for many years, and will for many more to come.

For the past 4 years, Troy and former Whitetail Freak Randy Birdsong have joined together in producing on the Outdoor Channel a show that appeals to all hunters and outdoor video enthusiast. Troy Ruiz is a native of South Louisiana.

My daughter, Lauren, was born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. She had open heart surgery when she was 8 months old. Lauren thrived

after her surgery...living life to the fullest and loving everything from her best friend, Elizabeth, to her cat, Max, to playing in the sand and feeding the seagulls at her favorite place on earth, Destin, Florida. That's where she was on Easter break in 2001 when she collapsed while on vacation with Elizabeth and her family. Lauren was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola but the damage was too great and she passed away after 8 days on life support. The surgery that Lauren had when she was 8 months old allowed her to be with us for 10 years filled with wonderful memories that I'll cherish forever. I'm participating in the Capital Area Heart Walk in memory of my daughter, Lauren, and also to help in the fight against heart disease. The money that is raised each year will be used to fund the valuable research, education and advocacy efforts of the American Heart Association. Please join me in the fight by donating to the American Heart Association's Capital Area Heart Walk. Thank you!

Senior Kelli Wilson and juniors Trey Kolb and Lauren West were chosen to participate in the Area Health Education Center’s (AHEC) annual Day with the Doctors program. These students spent Wed., Jan. 8, exploring medical education and careers at LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

Members of the senior class enrolled in Honors Civics competed in the annual We The People state competition sponsored by the Louisiana Center for Law and Civic Education on Fri., Jan. 31. The Unit 3 team of Logan Prather, Easton Holmes,

and Sarah Sonnier took top honors from the school’s 6 competing teams.

Two 4-H students placed at the parish show held at the LSU Parker Coliseum the first weekend of January. Seventh grader Luke James won Reserve Champion Angus Heifer, and 4th grader Sarah Israel won Grand Champion Cockerel & Standard Pullet (poultry) and Best of Show Opposite for her rabbit.

Sarah went on to compete at the South Central District Livestock Show. There she received Best of Breed for her Plymouth Rock chicken, 3rd place in Breed for her Orpington chicken, & 4th place in Poultry Premier Exhibitor (test and skill-a-thon). She will compete Feb. 8-15 at the State 4-H Show at the Lamar Dixon Center.

January has passed like a lightning bolt. We are working hard on providing a college preparatory education by taking the best of Central Private and making it better. Today, I received confirmation from The Cain Center at LSU indicating they will be helping us develop our mathematics curriculum. Next week I will be sending out an email to those that have volunteered, staff members and board members who will be involved, so we can get the ball rolling. My goal is to develop a K3 through 12 mathematics curriculum that gives every student the opportunity to go to college ready to start classes in math without needing any remediation. I have as a secondary goal the development of a program that uses online and electronic resources so students can carry

their text and supplementary resources on their electronic tablet. Lofty goals, but I think we can make it.

We have an open house February 13th at 6:30 in the elementary library. I invite any family that would like to take part in a Christian-based school that has great students and awesome staff to come visit us during open house. Come see why Central Private School is the best kept secret in the area. Our tuition is below the average for private schools in this area, and the education is excellent. Of course, I may be a little biased; I consider this part of my family. Then again, that may be the best reason to check us out. Our Family!

From the Principal’s Pen...

One of the many things up for auction as part of the annual CPPC raffle dinner/auction night was the opportunity for a student to serve as Principal for the Day. The response to this auction item was so overwhelming that Dr. Thielbar allowed not one but three students the opportunity.

On Wednesday, January 22, junior Shelby Romero was the first student to serve as Principal. She was able to follow along with Dr. Thielbar as he made rounds during the day. She was also able to attend the Central Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Additionally, Shelby was able to give Dr. Thielbar student input on various future plans for the campus and student body.

In the weeks to come, senior Daniel McNamara and 5th grader Mary-Hannah Varnado will each have their own turn as Principal for a Day.

Parents’ Club UpdatesAt the last regular meeting of 2013,

Central Private Parents’ Club members voted to make a $29,500 donation toward the 1st phase of technology upgrades. This donation paid for every teacher to have a desktop computer with internet and projectors with interface to the computer. In the very near future we will be adding Wi-Fi in both gyms and laptops for all coaches. The school has increased its internet capacity 10 times and will soon be adding fiber optic cable to the Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, High School, and both gyms. The next phase will be to place an iPad or tablet in every child’s hand. It has been our club’s goal to help equip each classroom with those tools necessary to enhance the learning process, and the club is proud to announce that we are very close to our goal.

The Fourth Annual 5K Rebel Run is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014.

Runners and walkers will participate in a 5K starting and ending at Central Private School along a designated route starting at 8:00 a.m. All proceeds will benefit education projects of Central Private School. Our February meeting will be at our regular time (the 2nd Tuesday of the month) on February 11th at 6:30 p.m. in the Elementary Library. Planning for next year’s activities have already begun and there are many opportunities for new ideas and new leadership with the election of new club officers being held in May. Pre-K & K Students Celebrate 100th Day

Students in Pre-K 3, Pre-K 4, and kindergarten celebrated the 100th Day of School on Wed., Jan. 22. As a part of their special celebration, students held a 100th Day parade down the high school hall to show off their t-shirts. Each t-shirt was complete with 100 items attached to it. They continued their day with various activities that helped them learn how to count to 100.

SIEGE! Physics Project Examines Medieval Warfare Device

Imagine you are a soldier in an army whose orders are to storm a castle where the only thing separating you and your friends from unfathomable riches is a very high, very thick, seemingly impenetrable wall. Previous attempts with your normal old catapult have proven unsuccessful. For maximum damage, the catapult must be positioned within range of the enemy’s archers on top of the wall, placing your men in danger. It’s time to get creative.

CPS Physics students did just that, minus the archers and the pillaging. Students had to figure out how to use only gravity as an energy source to power a baseball-flinging trebuchet. (pronounced “treb-you-shay” NOT “tree bucket” as the students were maliciously mislead to think.) Prompted with only a few size specifications, as to discourage the over achievers from building an actual siege weapon, the would-be engineers set off to see who could design and build a trebuchet capable of throwing a baseball further than their friends.

Lined up on the goal line of the football field they unleashed a fury, the likes of which have never been seen. Using their measurements of distance, hang time, and counterweight mass, they were able to calculate the gravitational potential energy required to accelerate a baseball to the velocity achieved by their trebuchet.

Most of the students were able to fling a baseball the minimum distance of 20 yards required by the assignment, but the iron clad monster constructed by Easton Holmes and Rhett Seguin used a 200 pound counterweight to launch a baseball 76 yards down the field.

Thomas Eddlemon, graduate of Central High School-Baton Rouge and former All District Linebacker for the Wildcats has been selected to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2013 Semester at Hendrix College Conway, AR. The list included 216 students out of 1,432, or 15 percent of the student body, who, completed no fewer than four whole credit courses in the semester for a letter grade, have received no grade other than A. Thomas Eddlemon, a regular starter for the Hendrix Warrior Football team, was named on January 28th, 2014, to The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll for the 2013 Fall Semester. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 for the term and be a regular member of a varsity sport. Hendrix College placed 79 student-athletes on the Southern

Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll for the 2013 fall term announced on Monday. The Warrior football team had the most honorees with 19, along with 6 of those athletes being selected to the Dean’s List. Thomas Eddlemon accounted for over 30 tackles on the year with one force fumble, one fumble recovery with a return of 12 yards during the Warriors Inaugural Football Season. A mandatory parent and student meeting for all students trying out for CHS Freshman Cheer will be Monday, February 10th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the Central High School cafeteria. A parent and the student must attend this meeting in order for the student to be eligible to tryout. Information regarding the cheerleading clinic, the tryout, and the 2014 -2015 schedule will be given at this time. A tryout fee of $20 cash is due at this time as well as a copy of the student’s current schedule listing teachers.The tryout clinic will be February 19 and 20, 6:30- 8:00 pm.Tryouts will be Friday, February 21, 6:00. Central High Girls Bowling (3-0) proved Monday (2-3-14) that they can bowl with the best teams around. Not only did the Wildcats up their winning streak to 3 matches, but they upset Holden (1-2), the 2013 State Runners-Up. Game 1 started off a little rough for Central with Holden grabbing an early lead, 6-2 and Total Pins 790-777. Central was led by Team Co-Captain Sarah LeDuff (Sophomore) with a 182, but it would take more than just one bowler to get back into the match. Fortunately, Game 2 saw the Wildcats put together one of the most balanced games of the season en route to their highest game in CHS history with a 901 to Holden’s 846. The Wildcats were once again led by LeDuff (225), followed by fellow Co-Captain Haley Young (Junior) with a 180 and Brittnee Robinson (Freshman) with a 153. Central would ride the good scores to a 5-3 Game 2 finish. Going into the final game the score couldn’t have been any closer with Holden holding a slim 9-7 lead, but Central holding a 42 pin lead in Total Pins. Central came out swinging in Game 3 and dominated Holden throughout the final game. Young

led the Wildcat attack with a 177, with LeDuff adding a 166 and Kaylee Robinson (Sophomore) chipping in a 152. Central would take Game 3 6-2 and 824-772 to complete the upset. In the end, the Wildcats would win the match by the final score of 16-11 and 2502-2408 in Total Pins. Overall, Central was led by LeDuff with a 573 series (a team high for the season), Young with a 482, Brittnee Robinson added a 432 (99 pins over average) and Kaylee Robinson’s 415. Holden was led by Mallory Bertone (181/468) and Gabrielle Reynolds (186/444). Central’s coaches have been looking forward to this match since the schedules came out to see just how much this young team could compete. And the young Wildcats responded tremendously. In fact, Holden’s 2408 series was a season high and Central topped that by almost 100 pins. Central Girls go for 4 in-a-row against co-district leading Redemptorist (3-0) on Monday (2-10-14) at Circle Bowl (3:15pm). Note: Central’s match against St Joseph from last Wednesday (1-29-14) was rescheduled for later in February due the weather closing schools in the Baton Rouge area.

CHS Girl’s Bowling Upsets Holden

Just like their second match of the season against Madison Prep, the Central Boys (2-1) showed they are capable of putting up big numbers. Central ran away from Christian Life Academy (0-2) by a final score of 26-1 and 3215-2279 in Total Pins on Monday (2-3-14). Central’s only blemish of the day came in Game 1 as Central rolled out to an early 7-1 and 1017-740 lead. Parker Aucoin (Freshman) led the way with a 203. The next two games would both be decided by an 8-0 margin (1079-778 and 1119-761). Game 2’s high bowlers were Aucoin’s 226, Dylan Ringo’s (Freshman) 210 and Team Captain Jacob Garretson’s (Junior) 201. Game 3 saw a more balanced attack. Aucoin once again led the Wildcats with a 221, followed by Garretson’s 202, Ringo’s 195, Sean Murphy’s (Senior) 190 and Kevin Kennedy’s (Senior) 185. Overall, Aucoin’s outstanding 650 series paced the Wildcats, followed by Ringo’s 584 and Garretson’s 572. With the match never in doubt, Central finished the match with their second straight 26-1 victory. Central will try to keep the momentum going on Monday (2-10-14) at Circle Bowl at 3:15pm against Broadmoor (2-1), a 2013 State Final Four finalist. Note: Central’s match against Baton Rouge High from last Wednesday (1-29-14) was rescheduled for later in February due the weather closing schools in the Baton Rouge area.

Central High Bowling was represented well this past Saturday (2-1-14) at the 14th Annual Coca Cola LHSAA Invitational. For the first time since the 2009 CHS Girls brought home a 3rd Place trophy (which is also the only time either the Boys or Girls finished in the Top 3), Central brought home two trophies to add to Central’s hallway of trophies. The Girls duplicated the 2009 Girls by finishing 3rd behind Albany (718 series) and Holden (714 series). The Girls rolled games of 129, 151, 133, 144 and 129 for a 686 series (137 average). Not to be out done, the Boys in convincing fashion took home the 1st Place prize! The Boys had games of 212,

202, 162, 174 and 233 for a fantastic 983 series (196 average) and finished ahead of Barbe (968 series) and Vandebilt Catholic (964 series). The Coca Cola LHSAA Invitational is a complete team event (structured after Collegiate Bowling) in which 5 bowlers combine to bowl each game. One bowler bowls the 1st and 6th frames, another bowls the 2nd and 7th frames, then 3rd/8th, 4th/9th, and 5th/10th frames. Saturday marked another step in the right direction for the future of Central Bowling. Central’s coaches would like to thank all the parents, CHS students and CHS faculty that came out Saturday to cheer on the Wildcats!

As a club, we have players from Central, Denham Springs, Walker, and Baton Rouge, ranging from 9th to 12th grade. We have a varsity and a JV team this year. January 25th and 26th, the Wildcats played in their first Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic tournament in Metairie at Lafreniere Park. This Saturday, February 8, come out to the Cat House to show your support to watch

our Lacrosse Wildcats take on Brother Martin. Varsity plays at 3pm and JV takes the field at 5pm. Admission is $5 for Adults and $2 for students and children. Catherine Pizzolato Stubbs, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and talented artist passed away peacefully at 2:30 AM Friday, January 31, 2014 at North Point Health Care in Baton Rouge at the age of 81. She was a native of Donaldsonville and a resident of Central. Visitation will be held at Seale Funeral Home, 9995 Hooper Road, Central, LA 70818 on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 11:00 AM until the Memorial Service at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel conducted by Rev. Jack Stoop. Survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles W. Stubbs; 4 daughters, Gwendolyn A. Sagona, Alice A. Hicks Wunstel and husband Jon R. Wunstel, Kathy J. Stubbs Norman and Robyn M. Stubbs Cook; 3 sisters, Francis Sims, Mamie Terrell and Carol McDaniel; 4 brothers, Gene, Pete, Harry and David Pizzolato; grandchildren, Charles D. Ordes, III, Angela J. Brigalia, Donald A. Ordes, Chrissy A. Ordes Fairley, Craig G. Brigalia and William W. Cook; great-grandchildren, Devin C. Ordes, Isabella J. Ordes, Chloe D. Ordes, Kayla E. Ordes, Paislie A. Fairley, Kyleigh A. Gayle East Burkett, 66, loved by so many, passed away on January 31, 2014. She was a proud daughter, mother and grandmother first and foremost, they were her heart and soul. However, her life was "her girls" as she called them. She was born and grew up in Baton Rouge but she has traveled around the world doing what she loved most, "making girls feel good about themselves". For Gayle it didn't matter if she was doing your hair and makeup for a pageant, wedding, or school dance she gave each girl her best to make them feel beautiful. For many years she was a sought after hairdresser with a client list any stylist would dream about. When she entered the pageant world she quickly became in demand. Her goal was to boost a young lady's self esteem while performing her magic. Her years in the beauty pageant world gave encouragement to so many young girls as she demanded them each to strive for and reach the God given potential she saw in every

one of them. She was a graduate of Istrouma High School and a graduate of Cosmetology school. She was offered a scholarship to beauty school before even entering high school because of her amazing talent. She is survived by her mother Lila Tullier Villneuve, by her daughter Dawn Burkett Johnson and son-in-law William "Billy" Johnson, granddaughter Alexandra "Alex" Johnson, stepbrothers David and Rita Villneuve, Charles and Marsha Villneuve and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceeded in death by her father Preston C. East, brothers Preston M. East, Ronald East, Richard East and stepfather James Villneuve. Pallbearers will be Frankie Lamb, Dirk Higginbotham, John Bonfanti, Billy Johnson, Fred Burkett, Frank Ragsdale, Joey Mayeaux Milazzo and Tisa Payne Graves. Visitation was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East on Monday, February 3, 2014 and at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 with mass following. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Frank Bass. Interment followed in Roselawn Memorial Park.
