Doug Levis, the principal behind the company, has been involved in the art industry since the early 1970s. He attended the University of Calgary and graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in Fine Arts. He returned to Calgary and managed Kensington Fine Art Gallery for five years before doing art consulting work and starting Artbank Incorporated which was Federally Incorporated in 1986. He formed Levis Fine Art Auctions in 1992.

At least twice a year, the company sends catalogues and notices for upcoming auctions to over 5,000 names currently on the mailing list. Clients include institutions, corporate collections, commercial galleries and private collectors from across Canada, the United States and overseas.

Heather Thomas

Magnolia GrandifloraLithograph edition of 340 x 51 cm 2003

$500

Heather Thomas was born in Nova Scotia. She studied at UBC, ECUAD and the Akademie fur Bildende Kunst in Salzburg. She has completed residencies in Banff (AB), Centrum(WA) and the Contemporary Artist’s Center (MA). Recent solo exhibitions are Mute Traces at the Point Gallery (2010), Saltspring Island; Wounded at the Kelowna Art Gallery (2008); and The Physics of Power at the Nanaimo Art Gallery (2007), Vancouver Island. Thomas lives on Vancouver Island.

Her recent work is centred on notions of conflict and trauma. Her past interest in the irony of toxic balance led her to question the design relationship between objects in the natural world whose objective is to regenerate life, and objects in the industrial and technological world whose objective is to take life. In this hypermodern world, where fear has created contempt for the cultures that define civilizations, she is interested in the role of the artist as witness.

Miyuki Shinkai

Rice FieldGlass and mixed media on board23" x 17" x 2"2007

$600

Miyuki Shinkai’s mixed media installation piece called Unison incorporates hand blown glass and driftwood. In this recent work she explores the concept of oneness, collaboration and community. She draws inspiration from her past migrating to North America and her present residing in a beach-side community on the Sunshine Coast.

Coming to North America from Japan, Shinkai found that expressing herself through art helped her overcome language and cultural barriers. Art has always been an ultimate communication method for her to interact and integrate with society.

“I believe that we should be as one, respecting diverse cultures, uniqueness and individuality. I think freedom of thought and creativity promotes innovation. I am evolving my artistic practice by collaborating with communities and exhibiting in public areas with free access to a visual language therefore inclusive to all cultures. My art will echo the collective strength and viability of the community.”

Shinkai earned a BA in English and Comparative Culture in Osaka, Japan and then continued her studies in Hawaii, California and Vermont, earning an MA in Social Administration at Georgia Southwestern State University with a minor in glass blowing. This eventually led her to the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. Shinkai and her husband, fellow artist Wayne Harjula, own and operate Mellonglass Studio in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, BC.

Shinkai’s solo exhibition, Uruoi, was at Two Rivers Gallery in 2002. She has completed public artworks for Whistler and Vancouver and won awards from the Corning Museum Glass Art Competition in 1997, 2000 and 2008.

Will Gill

PylonsAcrylic ink / graphite on mylar9 ½" x 24"2015

$900

Exerpt from: Will Gill, From Coast to Coast–An Introduction

Art in Newfoundland and Labrador, both historically and in contemporary terms, has been dominated by its uncompromising landscape of rock and water. Artists inevitably paint their relationship with the landscape: picturesque, sublime or incidental. But Will Gill was not seduced by the landscape. Starting with his own experience and internal concerns, Gill paints the big picture, in full capital letters. It is at turns raw, romantic, primal and personal. There is nothing regional about it, nothing that would announce its origins as being particular to Newfoundland.

In Newfoundland parlance, Will is a CFA, a come from away. He is a mainlander from Ontario, yet Gill has been embraced as a favoured son and respected mentor in his adopted province. He arrived, settled in the local scene and quietly set about consistently making memorable art in a startlingly varied range of media and techniques. An imposing and expressive physicality linked the various bodies of work.

Will Gill chose to live in one of Canada’s least populated and remote provinces. Yet somehow he has with affable good humour found his way into the pages of Canadian Art, the lyrical words of award-winning novelist Lisa Moore, the centre stage of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche and this past summer [2013], the visual art world stage of the Venice Biennale. Emerging as it does from such a solid foundation this recent body of work at Two Rivers Gallery is the tip of an artistic iceberg.

Will Gill’s solo exhibition, Bloodredlife, was at Two Rivers Gallery in 2013. A catalogue for Bloodredlife is available.

José Delgado-Guevara

Flying PrismOil on canvas15" x 20" (in the frame)2014

$750

“I paint compulsively. It is how I interact with my environment, my way to mean-ingful contact. The contact I seek is dif-ficult to define, because my experience of interacting with the world is full with the tension of things that I’m missing. My work does not constitute research or investigation into this world of the miss-ing, but rather a means by which to inter-act with it with respect for its autonomy. Since a young age, I have described my childhood in musical terms; a cluster of distortions. My world was noisy. Emo-tionally noisy. There was no contact, no interaction. My peaceful times, my moth-er learned that very quickly, were always spent playing the piano, playing the vio-lin, and drawing compulsively. I enjoy the physicality and rhythm of painting, and I look to carve colours into meaningful rhythms. For me, the process of making a painting bears a certain resemblance to the process of making music. I adjust the values of tone and the composition of shapes by thinking of them in terms of strong beats, weak beats, and phrasing. This is the form that contact takes for me, and that is what matters most to me. I currently reside in Prince George, BC, where I am the concertmaster of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra and the Artistic Director of the Prince George Conservatory of Music.

My two main mediums are pencil and charcoal drawing and oils.”

Erin Hutson

MandragoraPen and ink and acrylic on canvas48" x 36"2014

$900

Erin Hutson is a Highway 16 art-ist. Originally from Kitimat, BC, she currently resides in Fraser Lake and works primarily in drawing media mixed with watercolour and acrylic. Her visual style is strongly influ-enced by imagery from dreams, the landscape of Northern BC, the tech-nical teachings of her artist mother, and the man-made environment of hospitals. A former disabilities worker in Cal-gary, Alberta, Hutson attended the Alberta College of Art and Design but then succumbed to her own dis-ability and returned to the care of her wonderful, supportive parents, Bill and Eileen. She continues to make art as diligently as ever; albe-it at a slower rate, but with a keener sensitivity to detail, frailty, the re-lentless persistence of nature, and the life-giving power of imagination. Her work has been compared to the philosophical tones of Werner Herzog and the biological aesthet-ics of H.R. Giger. And also once to Norman Rockwell, which was con-fusing, but taken as a compliment nonetheless.

Hutson was part of the group exhi-bition, Earthly, at Two Rivers Gallery in 2014.

Sybille Muschik, a graduate of Em-ily Carr University of Art and Design, has been a practicing professional artist, graphic designer and art in-structor for over twenty years. She paints in a variety of mediums, predominately acrylics. Also a printmaker, she is especially fond of monotypes on various grounds including canvas.

Sybille Muschik was born in the out-skirts of Berlin to an artistic family. Her grandfather was a renowned landscape artist who often painted ‘en plein air’. It’s a small wonder that painting on site for her, which she often does in fall and spring, has been a continuing passion for over thirty years. She teaches draw-ing and painting classes as well as occasional seminars in printmaking to children and adults.

In her studio, Muschik often distills her connection with the wilderness into non-objective or abstract work in any number of media especially acrylic or printed monotypes. Her concern for the natural wilderness especially precious water resources, has led her to embrace stewardship issues. She sees the painting pro-cess as an extension of her inner vision that often references myths and archetypes while bridging a modern hectic lifestyle with be-ing enriched and sustained by the natural dynamic environment that surrounds her.

Tony Calzetta

Untitled #723Watercolour and graphite on paper9½" x 12" 2005

$750

Over the last 30 years, since receiving his BFA from the University of Windsor and his MFA from York University, Calzetta has exhibited continually in solo and group exhibitions. He works mainly on canvas and paper and at times in sculpture and printmaking. He has published three major livres d’artiste, “Acts of Kindness and Love” in collaboration with writer John Metcalf, and more recently, “How God Talks in His Sleep and other Fabulous Fictions” and “Peculiar Practices” with writer Leon Rooke. In addition to commissioned works, he is represented in public, corporate and private collections in Canada, the US and Europe. In 2011, his paintings exhibited at the Instituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto were part of the Padiglioni Italia at the 54th International Venice Biennale. Tony Calzetta was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 2014.

“My work is about drawing. The drawing is about images that are composed of shapes and forms constantly evolving from a highly personal visual vocabulary which started with subconscious doodling and automatic drawing and later from more conscious visual influence. My work can be viewed as “abstract funnies” or “surreal cartoons” which fit somewhere between high art and popular culture.”

Calzetta’s solo exhibition, War Stories for Children and Art Stories for Adults, was at Two Rivers Gallery in 2004.

Allan FarmerLandscapes from “HomeMaking”Light Dancing on MountainAcrylic on canvas20" x 30"2014

$600

Allan Hugh Farmer (1945–2014) was born in Vancouver and grew up in Duncan, BC. As a young man, Farmer studied languages at the University of Victoria, following which he travelled, worked and lived in Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. In 1974, he returned to BC where he completed a certificate program for log scaling. Farmer worked in this industry for the rest of his life, moving to Prince George in 1998. Throughout the Prince George community, Farmer was known as a local artist. Often people described him with emotion as a passionate and intellectual man in the sense that he was always thinking and dreaming. He was very excited to retire, as for the first time, he could dedicate himself entirely to his art. He had long anticipated this opportunity and was looking forward to putting his ideas on canvas. Tragically, he died suddenly a few months short of realizing his artistic dreams. Allan Farmer was a self-taught artist, with his first paintings dating back to 1992. From early on, Farmer’s motivation and sources of

inspiration were evident in his choice of subject matter. He loved the region in which he lived and he painted what he saw, consequently, this landscape occupied an important place in his paintings. He also represented unknown places on canvas. His work and the pastimes he enjoyed, like fishing and hiking, often brought him far away from the city to remote locations few people have seen and he wanted to share these places with others. In this way, we can confer an historic value to his work. Many of Farmer’s paintings document Prince George and its surroundings, offering an honest picture of the region that will be familiar to people who live here.

Farmer’s solo exhibition, Far Away: Landscapes by Allan Farmer, was at Two River Gallery, Rustad Galleria in 2014 and toured the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George that summer. Catalogue available.

Maureen Faulkner grew up in a log-ging camp in Northern BC where she was home-schooled by her mother and where art was the re-ward for hard work. She began a BA in art history at University of BC after having taken six months after Junior College to travel around Eu-rope and North Africa. During this trip, she began documenting her travels, a practice that she has sus-tained as an artist through to the present day. Faulkner went on to obtain teaching qualifications (and eventually an MEd from University of Victoria) and began a 33 year-long career as a high school art teacher.

Faulkner’s career as a teacher left her with the time and resources to pursue an independent practice as an artist which she maintains since retiring. Travel remains an important source of inspiration to her as an artist. She has developed a significant archive of journals which inform and influence the painting, drawing and installation based work that she continues in her studio to the present day. Faulkner lives and works in Prince George, BC.

In 2013, her solo exhibition, Cake: A Traveller’s Journey (catalogue available), was in Two Rivers Gal-lery Rustad Galleria and toured the Regional District of Fraser Fort George.

Peter von Tiesenhausen

Acts of ResistanceCharred wood / white wash5.75" x 6"2014

$1,125

Peter von Tiesenhausen lives and works in the small community of Demmit Alberta, however his reputation as an artist reaches far beyond. From his early beginnings studying at Alberta College of Art and Design, through having participated in projects and exhibitions in Europe, USA, New Zealand and many across Canada, he has become an artist on the international stage.

Von Tiesenhausen is an adept painter and sculptor but is also well known for his site specific installations. He has developed many of these installations on the land where he lives. Many of them use natural materials that over time disintegrate and revert to a natural state, sometimes leaving little trace, others like bronze sculptures placed in the forest or small chapel-esque buildings given over to the quiet contemplation, have a longer lasting legacy.

In 2003, Von Tiesenhausen drew national attention when his property line was breached by an oil and gas corporation planning to build a pipeline. Von Tiesenhausen argued that his land was a work of art and therefore protected under Canadian Copyright law. A settlement was reached out of court. In 2005, he had a solo exhibition, Requiem, at Two Rivers Gallery, which examined the impact of the Pine Beetle infestation in the boreal forest and in 2009, von Tiesenhausen’s sculpture, Balance, was also installed at Two Rivers Gallery.

Theresa Sapergia’s drawings and paintings are based in a material exploration of figuration and a questioning of the historical tropes of representation. Her work uses sentimentality, sincerity and humour to call into question contemporary art’s current relationship with irony and distancing.

Sapergia has exhibited in Montreal, Toronto, New York and Los Angeles. In 2009, Sapergia’s work comprised the solo exhibition, I Like Canada and Canada Likes Me, at Two Rivers Gallery as well as Songs to Sing

Corey Hardeman

SnowyOil on canvas28" x 28"2014

$1,400

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Corey Hardeman has drawn since she could first hold a pencil. Her formal education in biology and, later, in architectural drafting have both influenced her art making, which combines elements of traditional illustration and technical drawing with a love of tonal painting, an abiding interest in biomechanics and an eye for tension and movement. She considers her paintings to be documents rendered with oil paint, expressing her love of her sur-

roundings as part of an ongoing conversation with the Boreal forest and its inhabitants. She is preoccupied with the creation of a sense of refuge from time; a haven for subject and viewer alike from the clamor of progress and industry.

Hardeman was part of the group exhibition, Pipeline: A Line of Divi-sion, at Two Rivers Gallery in 2013.

Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether the purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in the property. 4. Notwithstanding the preceding conditions, if within fourteen days of the sale of any lot, the Buyer can provide us with the written opinion of two acknowledged experts stating that the art, as outlined in the glossary, is in effect substantially mis-described in the catalogue; and within fourteen days after such notice, the Buyer returns the lot to us in the same condition as when sold, we will rescind the sale and refund the Purchase Price received by them. Due to the time requirements, expense and sometimes changing scholarly opinion of some artists’ work, the Gallery cannot guarantee authenticity of paintings, drawings, graphic art or sculpture created before 1900.

5. We reserve the right to withdraw any property before the moment of sale. 6. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer, all bids are per lot as numbered in the catalogue. 7. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sale record is conclusive. 8. If the auctioneer decides without regard to the printed estimated price that any opening bid is below the value of the lot offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw the lot from the sale, and if, having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that any advance thereafter is insufficient, he may reject the advance. 9. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer or indication of being sold, title to the offered lot will pass to the highest bidder acknowledged

by the auctioneer, subject to conditions set forth herein, and such Buyer thereupon will pay the full purchase price thereof or such part as we may require. The Buyer also assumes all risks on the offered lot and neither the auction house nor its employees nor its agents shall be liable for any loss or damage of any kind whether caused by negligence or otherwise. All property must be removed from our premises by the Buyer at their expense not later than one business day following its sale and if not so removed, a handling charge of 5% of the purchase price per month until removal of the property will be payable by the purchaser. If the Buyer pre-arranges for artwork to be shipped, the Buyer is responsible for the costs incurred: packing fees of $50 and ground shipping charges via courier, C.O.D. 10. Payment in full must be made on the day of the sale by cash, certified cheque, travellers cheque, debit card, Visa, Mastercard or bank draft, unless other arrangements have been made with Two Rivers Gallery prior to the sale.

11. All currency figures are in Canadian dollars.

12. Some lots in the auction may be subject to provisions of the Cultural Property Import and Export Act of Canada. The Buyer is responsible for obtaining the necessary licenses and the denial or delay of any licenses shall not justify the cancellation of any sale or any delay in payment of the total purchase price for the lot.

13. This Agreement comprises the entirety of the contract between Two Rivers Gallery and the Buyer, and the Gallery shall not be held liable in respect of any representation not made in writing herein. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws in force in British Columbia, Canada, whose Courts shall have the sole jurisdiction to adjudicate claims made in respect of this Agreement.
