LIU Global offers the only program in the world that integrates
a series of year-long cultural immersions into a progressive,
four-year Bachelor of Arts degree.
LIU Global offers a BA degree in Global
Studies, a discipline that explores the
world’s interdependent cultural, political,
ecological and economic systems. The
program equips future business, cultural,
government and political leaders with
the tools to analyze challenges, issues
and process that transcend national and
disciplinary boundaries.
Studies will take students on an
unparalleled educational journey that
includes the cities of mainland China and
Europe, as well as the delicate ecology of
the Caribbean and Australia.
The final year of the program begins
with an independently designed research
and internship project in a location nearone of our centers around the world; it
culminates in a semester in New York
where students complete a series of
capstone experiences and a senior thesis.
Over the course of the program, students
build language skills, gain hands-on
experience and acquire an invaluable
cross-cultural education that prepares
them to become agents for change in the
contemporary, global community.
EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION
At LIU Global, we believe in learning
by doing through the integration of
classroom learning, cultural immersion,
community engagement and internships.
And learning is individualized thanks
to the close personal attention offaculty and advisors, who will meet
independently with students to guide
their projects and help develop their
research and writing skills. As students
build their capacities and confidence,
they move from structured classroom
learning and group field trips into
more intense and prolonged activities,
including field study, community service
and internships.
HIGH ACADEMIC STANDARDS
LIU Global’s high academic standards
and the structure of the curriculum
underscore the quality of the education,
delivered in a non-traditional way.
Students will graduate with a major
in Global Studies and a minor in

LIU GLOBAL
A Unique Blend of Learning Experiences
LIU Global students will spend the first three years living and learning
around the world — engaging with a variety of cultures and people through
coursework, fieldwork, service learning projects, internships, independent
studies and immersion. This experience will prepare them to conduct
an independently designed research project in a location of their choice,
culminating in a semester in New York where students complete a series of
capstone experiences and a senior thesis.
Combined, the LIU Global curriculum integrates classroom learning with
real-world experience from day one, with an emphasis on developing global
leadership skills through language immersion and the study of economic,
cultural, geographic, environmental and political realities of the world’s
key regions.
SOUGHT-AFTER SKILLS
Real-world experience and the proven ability to communicate and work
effectively with people of diverse backgrounds are key competencies
that organizations and employers seek in new hires, in the context of a
highly competitive global economy. These vital skills rarely appear on
the typical bachelor’s degree transcript, but they are at the core of an LIU
Global education.
MAJOR IN GLOBAL STUDIES, CONCENTRATIONS IN…
• Entrepreneurship. The minor in entrepreneurship introduces students to the
central role that entrepreneurship plays in economic and social development
throughout the world.
• International Relations. Students study factors that shape
international political and economic systems, specifically the
interactions among governments, international and non-governmentalorganizations and corporations.
• World Arts and Cultures. By studying human cultures and experiences
through the visual, literary and performing arts, students will learn to
understand and analyze traditions from around the world.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS SEQUENCE
In all of our academic programs, students are enrolled in courses organized
around classroom lectures and seminars, film viewings, readings, site visits,
hands-on projects, group workshops, group travel, nature experiences and
independent travel. Students might also be able to undertake independentstudy courses that are co-designed with local faculty around students’ interests
and passions.

GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE involves an understanding of the
interdependence of social, cultural, environmental and political
systems. Students identify the global repercussions of particular
events and trends that are observable in the local environment,
drawing out the human consequences, ethical implications and
calls for responsibility and action.
CROSS-CULTURAL COMPETENCE becomes second
nature as students learn to respect and understand the range
of factors that shape the beliefs and practices they encounter.
They identify the general patterns that inform a culture — their
own and that of others — as well as the worldview within which
those patterns make sense. Developing the ability to interpret
experience from different perspectives, along with language
proficiency and an appreciation for cultural norms, students
learn to adapt their thought, behavior and speech to match
particular contexts.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY is instilled
in students along with ethical awareness, including the ability
to express and analyze their core values and those of others,
recognize the ethical dimensions of complex situations and
apply an independent ethical understanding of life with all of
its implications. Through civic knowledge and engagement,
students identify the principles of government, social justice
and sustainability within their own society and that of others
and apply the knowledge they gain to articulate the rights and
responsibilities of global citizens. Such development requires
leadership and teamwork skills that combine independent
initiative, a collaborative spirit and the ability to synthesize andarticulate diverse viewpoints within a group.
INTELLECTUAL AND PRACTICAL SKILLS are
developed organically as students develop proficiency in
writing, oral presentation and digital communication, and learn
to formulate critical and creative thought. From the mastery
of writing skills to the effective use of stylistic techniques to
sensitivity for audience and context, students will be able to
independently produce complex and well-grounded analyses
and apply them in novel situations. This work will help themdevelop aptitude in qualitative research for projects that are
clear in scope and solid in methodology.

ACADEMIC
CENTERS AROUNDTHE WORLDEach of our academic centers provide unique learning
experiences that are available nowhere else.
FRESHMAN YEAR SOPHOMORE YEAR
The Costa Rica Center hosts all first
year students, introducing them
to experiential education, research
methods, college writing, Central
American and Caribbean studies
and Global studies. In addition to
attending regularly scheduled classes
and seminars as well as intensive
Spanish language classes, students
learn how to plan, evaluate anddocument their fieldwork with the
support and guidance of Costa Rica-
based faculty members.
The first semester of the Europe
program, in the second year, begins
with a two-week module in London
and Berlin, where students explore
the emergence of the political culture
of the modern nation-state, the
basic building block of international
relations and global governance. For
the second module, the program
moves to the program’s home base atthe University of Alcalá, some 30
miles from the Madrid city center
and the setting for studying the forces
that have molded modern Europe.
The second semester of the Europe
program will focus on the
comparative politics of post-World
War II Europe, beginning with a
two-week module in Paris and
Rome, where students gain a deeper
understanding of the constitutional
arrangements that emerged in thepostwar era and the role of the
European Union in the global
governance and economic system.
Students then travel to Florence,
Italy, the birthplace of the European
Renaissance, where students take
courses in documentary filmmaking,
world cinema, Renaissance Art and
conversational Italian. The program’s
final module will take students toSarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, and focus on issues of
ethnic and religious conflict.
The first and second-year programs
provide students with academic and
personal qualities that prepare them
for a life of success. In addition
to core academic skills, students
develop assets such as self-reliance,
independence, cultural knowledgeand language skills.

JUNIOR YEAR SENIOR YEAR
In the third year, students have the
choice between the Australia & Asia
Program or the China Center.
The Australia & Asia Program
orients students to natural,
human and political dynamics of
Australasia. The program explores
the relationship between humans
and their environment and the
challenges by economic development.
Students specifically study sustainable
development, modernization, as well
as the challenges the development
poses on the region’s indigenous
peoples.
The academic program at the China
Center is designed for students to
take full advantage of the Center’s
location on the Yangtze Delta, the
world’s most economically dynamic
region. Housed on the campus
of Zhejiang University, one of the
country’s finest Universities, students
study intensive Chinese language,
modern Chinese history, politics and
culture. Students are introduced
to the realities of China’s rapid
development through field work withbusinesses, government agencies
and NGOs that are driving the
development of one of the world’s
most important countries.
In the fall term of the final year,
students choose one of the LIU
Global Center locations to engage
in a professional internship and an
independent study project, which will
form the basis for their senior thesis
— the subject of which will be the
local manifestation of a global issue.
In the spring semester of the final
year, after rigorous academic and
experiential learning around the
world, students enter into the Senior
Capstone Semester in New York
City, where they complete their
senior thesis project.
The Senior Capstone Semester
facilitates students “re-entry” into
America through the world-class
learning resources available in New
York City.
During this final semester, students
continue to develop an appreciation
for the multi-global environment in
which they live, work and study,
and they learn how to leverage
and embrace globalization as they
prepare to become leaders in their
chosen field.
From the complexities of modern China, to the
history, cultures and bustling cities of Europe, to
the diverse religions of India and Thailand, LIU
Global students learn about social, economic,
environmental, political and cultural issues that haveglobal impact from the perspective of local citizens.
Share the experience of traveling, working and
studying in exotic locations with like-minded LIU
Global classmates and form close mentorships and
life-long bonds with instructors and local residents.
China has been the world’s fastest
growing country for the past 30 years.
The world’s top 500 companies all
do business in China, with many
choosing to headquarter in the
bustling Chinese cities of Hong Kong,
Shanghai and Beijing.
The current rise of China has made
it very clear that people who can
speak Chinese and have firsthand
experience of living in China are
going to have a great advantage in
terms of employment. China serves
as a huge market for multinational
corporations, and employers are well
aware that a real understanding of
China, Chinese culture and Chinese
people is a big plus for those whowant to become the world’s next
generation of leaders.

Columbus and the Spanish monarchs
that commissioned his voyages to
America. The fall curriculum in
Spain combines courses and field
work that will introduce you to the
forces that have produced modern
Europe, and the economic and
