5. The Preservation of our Faith (cont'd)

3. Association with non-Catholics - with irreligious people, scoffers at religion, infidels, atheists - may also lead to a weakening and eventual loss of faith. Many Catholics are lost to the Church through mixed marriages. The faith of Catholics is frequently undermined also through membership in forbidden non-Catholic societies. The following organizations in all their branches are forbidden to Catholics because membership in them would be equivalent to joining a Protestant sect and taking part in its religious ceremonies:a) Freemasons, forbidden under the penalty of excommunication which extends to the female groups (Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem) and the junior groups (Job’s Daughters, Order of Rainbow, Order of De Molay);b) The Independent Order of Good Templars;c) Independent Order of Odd Fellows;d) Sons of Temperance;e) Knights of Pythias of the World;

4. Reading of irreligious literature: The Church has not only the task of infallibly propounding Christ’s teaching but also the correlative duty of proscribing any doctrine opposed to Christ’s truth. St. Peter and his successors were commissioned to feed Christ’s flock, not to poison it or permit it to be poisoned.

5. Private Revelations: Catholics are sometimes disturbed by alleged apparitions of our Lord, or of a saint, which are at the same time accompanied by certain revelations seemingly adding new truths to the object of our faith. In order to clarify this matter, we shall briefly state the Church’s position on private revelations.

Christ revealed to the apostles either Himself or through the Holy Spirit all that He intended to reveal for the good of the universal Church. With the death of the last apostle, St. John, God’s message was complete. All revelations occurring since the death of St. John are called “private” revelations. Following the directions of the Great Pope, Benedict XIV, let us now enumerate the tests by which we can determine whether an alleged revelation is from the Holy Spirit, or from an evil spirit, or from an unbalanced imagination. (a) A private revelation is not from God if it contradicts the teachings of Scripture, Tradition, and the infallible teachings of the Church. It likewise cannot be true if it contains in itself contradictory statements. (b) A private revelation is not from the Holy Spirit if it incites to pride, vanity and disobedience - and if it leaves the faithful disturbed, puzzled, upset, confused: “By their fruits you shall know them.” (c) A private revelation or message becomes suspect if its recipient is lacking in sanity and sanctity, if he is vain and haughty, if he boasts and glories in his purported heavenly messages. To be continued ...

St. Joseph's Altar and Lenten Soup: The FNE girls' group willhost a St. Joseph's Altar and Lenten Soup fundraiser on Sunday, March 11th after the 9:00am & 11:30am Masses. The altar will be selling a variety of baked goods. The money raised will help fund their Catholic scouting program. Thank you for your support!

5. The Preservation of our Faith

The weakening and final loss of faith may be due to one of several causes:1. Ignorance: There are those who say they cannot “accept” a certain teaching of the Church or that they are “beginning to doubt” a particular Catholic doctrine. Either they have a distorted idea of the truth in question or are simply ignorant. St. Pius X sounded a warning in regard to the evil effects of religious ignorance. “The cause of all evils which afflict the world,” he said, “is ignorance of divine truths.” His successor, the late Pius XII, was no less emphatic in lamenting the religious ignorance of our day. “The world is suffering from very sad evils,” he said, “but few are as ominous as religious ignorance in all its forms. Radical remedies are urgently needed, but few of them are as urgent as the diffusion of the catechism.” “What the mind does not know, the heart does not desire,” says a truthful old proverb. How can a person make an act of faith in, and fashion his life by, truths of which he is ignorant? How can he lead a good moral life when he does not know the Church’s teachings on the laws of God? What is to prevent him from becoming a complete secularist? Says St. Paul, “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him of whom they have not heard? (Rm. 10:14)

2. Doubt: Man does not live on doubt and error. He fashions his life according to convictions which are based on truth. It is said that a rather large number of Catholic high school graduates lose their faith at secular colleges and universities. The first step in the disintegration of their faith is doubt - often inspired by the instructor. At a certain state university a Catholic textbook was used in the course on philosophy and ethics. The professor demolished one by one the Catholic theses and principles contained in it. To this he added about a hundred pages of “scientific” objections against the Catholic religion. Intellectual confusion and doubt were the inevitable result.

The naive student who listens to such a self-constituted authority in the field of religion (of which he is quite ignorant) reasons as follows: “This man is a great scholar. He is an authority on his subject. He is loaded down with degrees. He is permitted to occupy a chair in one of the foremost institutions of the state. Certainly he must know the truth. In fact, did he not say that he will make ‘intellectual and enlightened men’ and ‘scientific thinkers’ of us? That we must abandon the antediluvian ideas of our poor deluded parents and pastors?Woe to the student who dares to disagree with the “savant” in the chair: he is often treated with ridicule and sarcasm, and his honest queries are brushed aside with curt and cutting retorts. The right of free speech and free thought was made for the professor but not for the students. So instead of counseling with priest, instead of seeking information in Catholic libraries, the student gradually surrenders to his doubts and finally loses his faith altogether. To be continued ...

Lenten Alms Giving: During Lent we are exhorted to works of fasting, alms-giving, and prayer. An excellent object for your generosity would be the Pregnancy Aid Clinic in Hapeville GA, run in complete conformity with Catholic teaching: http://www.pregnancyaidclinic.org/

4. God’s Message – Faith (cont'd)

3. Faith: Faith may be considered as a virtue or as an act. As a virtue faith is a disposition, infused with sanctifying grace into the soul at baptism, inclining the soul to believe firmly. As an act, faith is an assent of the mind, under the command of the will, to revealed truths because of the authority of God who can neither be deceived nor deceive. An act of faith is wholly the work of the Holy Ghost in the soul whose grace precedes, accompanies and strengthens it. Faith is the beginning, basis, and root of all salvation. For man does not will and desire what he does not know. He cannot tend toward God, hope in Him and love Him, unless he first accepts God’s existence. He cannot tend toward heaven unless through faith he admits to be a reality. “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Heb. 11:6).

The object of our faith is the “glad tidings of our salvation.” At the end of His earthly sojourn our Lord said, “Go ye into the whole world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved” (Mk. 16:15-16).

The Blessings of Faith are obviously many:a) Faith perfects and increases our knowledge. What the telescope is to the unaided eye, faith is to reason. Unaided reason gives us only an imperfect knowledge of God’s existence and nature. Faith opens up a new world to us: It tells us about the Trinity, Incarnation, redemption, grace and the Beatific Vision.

b) Faith strengthens us in the daily trials and tribulations of life. It discloses to us the reward in store for those who bear patiently the momentary sufferings here below, and teaches us that each tribulation borne willingly merits a further degree of heavenly glory.

c) Faith is the basis of our return to God after a fall. When we have sinned mortally, when we have expelled the Blessed Trinity and sanctifying grace from the soul, there still remains a tiny light in the dark night of the soul - faith. Because we still believe in God, in heaven and hell, we can repent.

To be continued ...

St Gerard's Ministry: monthly noon Mass will be postponed until next Wednesday, Feb 21, due to Ash Wednesday this week.

Fast and Abstinence Regulations observed in Lent: ▪ Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday (Feb 14), Good Friday (Mar 30) and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older. This is by Law and not custom. ▪ Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 60 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. ▪ Those who are sick, pregnant, nursing or whose health would be adversely affected by fasting or abstinence should not consider themselves bound by these norms. ▪ During the season of Lent we are all called to embrace penances and to perform works of charity that reflect our desire for conversion.

4. God’s Message – Faith (cont'd)

2. Tradition: Our Lord wrote nothing. Very few of the apostles wrote. Christ commanded the apostles to preach, not to write. “Going therefore, teach ye all nations” (Matt. 28:19); “Preach the gospel to every creature” (Mk. 16:15). The early Christians were commanded to hear the Church, not to read the still nonexistent or at most incomplete New Testament Scriptures: “He that heareth you, heareth me” (Lk. 10:16). Hence there existed from the beginning a body of truths, entrusted by God to the Church, dealing with faith and morals. They were distinct from the word of God as found in the Bible, but together with it they formed the object of our faith. These truths were preserved, interpreted and transmitted to others by the popes and bishops of the Church. It is to these truths that we now apply the term “tradition.” St. Paul refers to it when he writes, “Therefore, brethren, stand fast: and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word or by our epistle” (2 Thess. 2:14).

Tradition supplements the Bible. The books of the New Testament were “occasional” writings, that is, they were occasioned by a special problem in the early Church and directed to a particular congregation. They were words of explanation, counsel, encouragement and consolation, or suggestions in regard to local difficulties or arrangements. They were not detailed treatises and systematic expositions of Christian theology; rather, they were subordinate to the ordinary teaching. St. John tells us that “there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written” (Jn. 21:25). Hence the Bible does not contain all the truths taught by our Lord and the apostles.

Fathers of the Church: These are eminent Church writers who in their writings are witnesses and mouthpieces of the general belief and teaching of the Church. If the fathers of the Church unanimously teach that a certain doctrine - handed down by the supreme pontiffs and bishops - goes back to our Lord or to the time of the Apostles, such a doctrine is considered as divinely revealed and as the object of our faith. To qualify as a Church father the writer must (a) have lived in the early ages of the Church; (b) led a saintly life; (c) proposed the Church’s teaching without error; (d) received the approval of the Church.

The four great Fathers of the West are St. Ambrose (340-397), St. Jerome (340-420), St. Augustine (354-430), St. Gregory the Great (540-604). The four great Fathers of the East are St. Athanasius (293-373), St. Gregory Nazianzen (329-389), St. Basil the Great (330-379), and St.John Chrysostom (345-407).

The title of Doctor of the Church is granted by the Holy See to writers of great sanctity and learning, noted for the their brilliant exposition and skillful defense of Christian doctrine, whose writings have strengthened the faith of the faithful and thus have proved of great value to the entire Church. Prominent among the doctors of the Church are St. Bonaventure (1221-1274), St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), St. John of the Cross (1542-1622).

Now, how do the truths contained in Scripture and Tradition, and infallibly preserved and interpreted for us by the Church, enter into our own lives? By faith. It is by faith that man assimilates these truths, incorporates them into his life, and shapes his destiny in accordance with them. To be continued ...
