Little Phoenix The Newsletter of Yarm Pre-Prep
Number 221
24th November 2017 Mrs Speight‟s message ...
Pre-Prep days ensure there are never 2 days the same! May I take the time to thank you all for attending our
recent Parents' Evenings, I'm sure you are all as proud of your children as we are. The children's love of learning is
always apparent when they want to find out more, asking many questions about what is going to happen next and
what are they doing today. Nursery and Reception enjoyed their Woodland sessions, Reception measured sticks and
compared lengths, whilst Nursery had a ball making minibeast houses. Year 1 have been enjoying the story, The Owl
Who Was Afraid of the Dark - I'm sure many of our children are going to be authors when they are older.
Observing a French lesson with Miss Goodfellow and an Art lesson with Mrs McCormack in Year 2 was a joy, the
children are so lucky to be taught by specialist teachers. I wonder if the children can remember about the
French version of Goldilocks and the giant picture of a lion inspired by the work of Rousseau? It would be rude not
to mention Christmas, don't forget the Craft Fair on Saturday. The children love seeing Santa and visiting him in
his grotto. It's perfect for getting you in the mood and feeling festive. I have to mention the wonderful team, they
are busy behind the scenes making sure the costumes, scenery and props are all ready for our nativities. The
children have delighted me with their wonderful singing and learning their lines so quickly, this always amazes me
when they are so little. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow, have a super weekend.
Warmest wishes,
Twitta Woo! 1P have been writing lovely independent stories about „The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark!‟ We have used leaves to make autumnal squirrel pictures and have
been learning the names of colours in French. What fun we have had!

Liquids and Solids
A visit from Poppy Nursery have been learning how to care for our pets. We were very lucky to have a visit from Mrs Honeyman‟s gorgeous dog, Poppy. Poppy is a two year old Cockapoo who was not phased by all of the excitement! The children asked about her diet,
toys and how to brush her fur. We wouldn‟t be surprised if a puppy has been added to many a Christmas list!
In science, Year 2 have been investigating liquids and solids.
We played a sorting game and then went on to explore a mixture called „oobleck‟.
This is cornflour mixed with water. The children experimented using a
variety of equipment and found that the oobleck is a liquid and a solid. After a
little bit of research, we found that this is called a „non-Newtonian‟ fluid!
Super scientists!
“Queens run quickly … qu, qu, qu” We have been introducing the „qu‟ sound in Reception. We have made afternoon tea for the Queen, including writing and posting very polite invitations and created sparkly crown jewels. Inspired by the wonderful Steve
Anthony book „The Queen‟s Hat‟, we have also designed
and made our own royal headwear.
Truly fit for the Queen.
Who Am I? We have been learning all kinds of fascinating facts about night animals in 1D. The
boys and girls have been using these to create some very tricky riddles...can you guess what kind of night animal they are describing?
