Dear Parent and Caregivers:
The 2016-2017 school year has begun and Cambridge Elementary has exciting
plans and high expectations for your child’s learning. I know that you also have many hopes
and dreams for your child’s success in school and beyond.
To make sure those hopes and dreams are realized, I want to ask for your commit-
ment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year. The evidence is
clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attend-
ance rates are linked to high student achievement. This is true for every grade – elemen-
tary, middle and high school students.
A recent review of student attendance data by the Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction shows that regular school attendance from Kindergarten on is essential to suc-
cessful learning: Every day counts. Missing school even 10% of the time has a significant
impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. Students
with good attendance performed better in math and reading. Children who had good attend-
ance in Kindergarten through Grade 2 were more than twice as likely to score proficient on
state math tests by the time they reached Grade 8 as their peers who missed more school.
In reading, there were similar results.
Good attendance starts early. Research has shown that the attendance habits es-
tablished Kindergarten through Grade 2 have lasting effects on students throughout their
education: Children with high attendance in the early grades continue to have good attend-
ance; and students with low attendance in the early grades are more likely to have low at-
tendance—and lower academic performance—throughout their elementary and middle
school years.
As your child’s most influential teacher, I am asking for your support in helping your
child get to school on time every day this year. Your child needs to be in school and en-
gaged in learning to reach his or her full potential. Yet, we realize that every family faces
challenges—illness, transportation, child care, or scheduling demands. Please let me or
your child’s teacher know if your family needs help dealing with these challenges to your
child’s good school attendance. My contact information is below. We will do our best to
help your family ensure that your child’s school attendance stays on track. More information
on what families and schools can do together to support good student attendance can be
found at:: http://www.attendanceworks.org/about/what-i-can-do/parents/ .
Please know that our school day starts at 8:00 a.m. We need your help insuring stu-
dents are seated, in their desk by 8:00 a.m. as that is when instruction will start.
Thank you for all you do to support your child’s school success and well-being, as
well as our school. I look forward to working with you this year and to having your child
learn and grow at Cambridge Elementary!
Best wishes for a safe and successful school year.
Sincerely,
Chris Holt, Principal

PBIS Our PBIS theme this year is Be a Blue Jay Superhero! We have shared with the students that there are several traits that make a person a hero-Responsibility, Respect, Trustworthiness, Being Safe, Caring, Fairness, and Citizenship.
Friday, September 9 we had our back to school kick off which went really well and included a visit from our own hero, Bruiser. He modeled for us some of the superhero traits we should be seeing everyday at school. Students also rotated around to different locations in the school-hallway, cafeteria, bathroom, classroom, Mr. McGowan, and the bus, to review the expectations that all heroes should follow.
We will be focusing on particular traits each month and at the end of the
month announcing students who have shown exemplary behavior of that
trait. Our focus for October is Responsibility! As our students show off
their Hero Skills and earn Blue Jay slips, they will watch buildings on our
PBIS board light up a floor at a time until they reach the top. We will then
celebrate our first school wide incentive!

Art Room News Back at it! CES artists have been creating in the art room! The first day of art was filled with a Art Rockstar Es-cape game to work in bands to solve puzzles around the art room. This was great practice to see that we remembered all the rules of the art room. We also learned the motions for our mantra for the art room. As your CES artist to show you the motions! Artists also decorated a strip of paper for our Art Room ―Wish Wall‖. Each strip has a special ―wish‖ or
goal for this year written in a special silver pen. For example, ―I wish to smile at my bus driver each
morning‖ or ―I wish to practice being calm if I get angry.‖ Our goal is to work on these wishes through-
out the year and use our wall as a reminder.
5K walk with Lori Hughes
Lori Hughes, Nikolay Middle School Math and Science teacher, recently completed two 5k
walks! She celebrated her progress of getting stronger after her diagnosis of Guillan-Barre
Syndrome (a paralyzing autoimmune disease) She walked the Cambridge CAP fun run and
the Henry Vilas Zoo Run Run with her walker and crossed the finish line without a walker!
She has come so far and would like to thank the Cambridge community for all their support
during her rehabilitation.
International Dot Day
On September 15th, CES and many others celebrated International Dot Day! This day was created to inspire us to stay creative and be problem solvers. It is based off the book ―The Dot‖ by Peter H. Reyn-olds. Many classrooms sang the dot song, wore dots, and read the book the dot featuring Vashti, a young girl who struggled in art class. Her art became such an inspiration! Keep your eyes peeled for our dot day creation, still to be assembled!
