Landis Homes is a passionatecommunity! I believe this passion isexpressed in a number of special ways:

• Passion for sustaining the strongspiritual and Christ-like nature of thecurrent community, as well asbuilding and enhancing thecommunity in new ways as LinfordGood described in the Spring 2007issue of Horizons. A map showingthis new residential living expansion, including the currently projected sixhybrid homes providing 12 homes ineach building along with enclosedparking on the ground floor, isposted on the Landis Homes website www.landishomes.org.

• Passion for serving one another, which is expressed in one of ourguiding values, teamwork. Thisvalue is experienced throughout thecommunity as residents and staffpersons pray for each other. It is alsoseen in the many residents andpersons from the broader Lancastercommunity who give over 50,000hours of volunteer time withinLandis Homes each year. Inaddition, residents give more than15,000 hours of volunteer service toorganizations such as MennoniteCentral Committee and othersthroughout the local community. The Star Comforters program andthe golf tournament are twoexamples among many!

• Passion for learning, which isexpressed in our active pursuit ofperson-centered and resident-directed care. This is a journey oflearning new ways of workingtogether, un-learning some formerways, and keeping our focus on ourguiding values and our missionwhich seeks to serve aging adults andtheir families by honoring andenriching lives in a community ofChrist-like love.

• Passion to pursue new opportunities, which is expressed in our desire tomeet the needs of persons whochoose to live as long as possible intheir current homes through thenewly formed “Landis at Home”ministry launched earlier this year, aswell as our desire to serve personswith varying levels of financialresources. The Landis Homes Boardis strongly supportive of theseinitiatives, and we look forward toexploring and implementing newoptions for senior living inpartnership with others who sharethis vision.

• Passion for strengthening ourconnections with the church andlocal congregations. Theseconnections have been very strongsince we were founded as a ministryof Eastern Mennonite Missions andLancaster Mennonite Conference inthe early 1960’s, and which continueto strengthen through ourrelationship as an agency ofLancaster Mennonite Conferenceand a conference-related ministry ofAtlantic Coast Conference. Ourhope is that future communicationswith all congregations of ourresidents may unleash newpartnership opportunities as we seekto support the missional movementwithin the church.

Landis Homes offers a well-maintainedcampus located in a beautiful part ofGod’s creation, surrounded by farmland.I believe even this blessing pales incomparison with thebeauty found in thispassionatecommunity of God’speople!

A tribute to Robert E. Martin

1933 - 2007The Landis Homes Community was saddened by the

recent passing of loyal supporter, Robert E. Martin.

Robert, along with his sons, faithfully volunteered

auction services to the Landis Homes community for the

past eight years as part of the Fellowship Day activities.

His enthusiasm and diligent efforts always helped to

inspire spirited bidding on the part of many generous

buyers, which in turn brought a great benefit to the

Caring Fund.

Employees, residents, and many friends of Landis

Homes will greatly miss Robert. He was also generous

in his support of other worthy causes in the wider

community.

Ciaccia, a 2007 graduate, is the daughter of Kathyand Ken Ciaccia of Honeybrook. In addition to herstudies she was involved in the school art club andthe National Honor Society. The subject of herblack and white photo is an antiques shop in Lititz.

“It is a great honor to receive the Landis Homes Award for my photograph I call Nostalgia”, said Ciaccia. “Iappreciate Landis Homes supporting the arts at Lancaster Mennonite High School.”

In return for the artwork, Landis Homes made contributions to the Lancaster Mennonite High art departmentand to further Ciaccia’s education. Her plan is to attend Shippensburg University in the fall to pursue herinterest in science.

Linford Good in presenting the award to Ciaccia at the Lancaster Mennonite Awards assembly said, “Manypeople who live, work and visit will enjoy Kristen’s artwork displayed at Landis Homes.”

He continued, “Landis Homes values this opportunity to encourage young artists and to support the ArtDepartment at Lancaster Mennonite School.”

A group of volunteers from Landis Homes received statewide recognition for their service to the residents ofthe retirement community. The group that formed in April 2006 called Star Comforters received the PANPHAaward as Volunteer Group of the Year for 2007.

The idea for the service arose at the suggestion of CNA Deb Boyer who wanted to do more with residents inher care. The Star Comforter service is made up of resident and staff volunteers, who were recruited andreceived training from the Hospice of Lancaster County to sit with persons who are dying. The volunteers useone of two carts assembled with items such as music, lotion and reading materials to be used at this sacred timein a person’s life journey.

The service is available throughout the campus for persons in healthcare, assisted living, suites, apartments andcottages. The healthcare staff members on duty provide any needed nursing care.

According to the PANPHA Distinguished Service Award booklet, “ the Landis Homes Star Comforters program, consisting of resident and staff volunteers specially screened and trained to serve, affords terminally ill residents acalming and supportive presence in their transition from life to death. Volunteers serve as a companion andhonor the wishes of the dying resident.”

The awards were presented in late June at the PANPHA Annual Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania.PANPHA, an Association of Pennsylvania Nonprofit Senior Services, represents over 320 nonprofit providers of
