Thinking of the free time spiced with new experiences? ChooseLithuania! Although our country is small, it is not easy to choose the

route – there are so many places of distinctive and unique beauty, lots of enter-tainment and awaiting experiences. Perhaps you would like to choose theLithuanian Baltic Coast Amber route? Or set off to the mystical land of obsti-nate Samogitians (Þemaitija)? The trip to the old villages and sunny pinewoodsof singing Dzûkija‘s people would be fantastic. Or you would like to choose theland of cheerful highlanders (Aukðtaitija), surrounded by lakes, which look likeeyes, waiting for visiting guests…

There are four ethnographical regions in Lithuania. In three of themthere are national parks of Aukðtaitija (Highlands), Þemaitija (Low-

lands or Samogitia) and Dzûkija, which are distinguished from each other bynature and cultural heritage just like regional people by their character. More-over there are 30 regional parks in the country, a number of conservation areaseach of which is a unique mini world.

Travelling across Lithuania by any means of transport or on foot is apure pleasure: good road network, parks are webbed with tracks, trails

and fascinating routes. There are plenty of rest areas in the side roads, a lot ofcamps and sightseeing platforms offering overwhelming panoramic views.Ribbons of trails and tracks are embellished with small-sized Lithuanian tradi-tional sculptures – crosses, sideway shrines, woodcarvings on mythological themesof the Balts.

Eager for extremes? Which of these you prefer – air balloon, soviet airfighter, night trip to marsh or diving to the bottom of the lake to see

the ancient polar city? Or perhaps you would like to choose the whole marathonof adventurous entertainment?

Lithuanians are northerners with southern temper - joyful and hos-pitablepeople, and communicating is easy and pleasant. While our traditions

and creativity can make each entertainment or encounter an exciting adventure, which you will remember long after. Discover Lithuania – a unique world at theheart of Europe!

are the trips in protected territories, i.e. na-tional and regional parks occupying the mostbeautiful landscapes and locations rich in avariety of nature and the most valuable cul-tural heritage. More than 170 tourism routesand paths differing in level, types and topic,as well as almost 500 different short-stay lod-ging-houses with different facilities are setin the territories characterized by theiruniqueness.

Approximately 120 cognitive, recreationand training routes are set in other forests thatare in the competence of forest enterprises (28of them are adapted to disabled people). Theterritories that fall under the competence ofthe forest enterprises reveal the most beauti-ful panorama and have 1700 recreation objectsin total: 60 survey sites, almost 900 rest places, and approximately 500 camps. 300 of those ob-jects are adapted to disabled people. Theroutes are decorated with wooden articlescarved by ingenious craftsmen, strange stemsand stumps created by the joking nature. Thetrips on all Lithuanian roads are interestingand comfortable.

parks of Anyksèiai, Birþai, Dubysa, Krekenava,Kauno Marios (the Kaunas Lagoon), Meteliai, the Nemunas delta, Pagramantis, Venta,Varniai, Verkiai, Pavilniai, Tytuvënai etc will bein particular rich. Homesteads in villages and

Un-hilly relief, interesting and quicklychanging landscape as well as a dense net-work of roads with hard covering makesLithuanian roads very suitable for travellingby bicycle. There are no boring long distancesfrom one place to the other, as the country isevenly populated. Every location has its ownsights of history, architecture, monuments ofnature or beautiful landscape.

The most famous and popular is the Bal-tic coast cycle route (EuroVelo route No 10from Bûtingë to Nida), which goes throug-hout the Baltic coastline of Lithuania. In thePalanga – Klaipëda distance the cycle routeleads to the picturesque Pajûrio regional park. The ferry will take you from Klaipëda to theKurðiø Nerijos national park, famous for itsunique beauty. There the pine forests attemptto temper the dunes, whereas settlementshave retained the colours of ancient fisher-men houses and look like from the picture. The new distance of this route going alongthe cost of Kurðiø Marios (The Curonian la-goon) to the regional park of the Nemunasdelta shall be marked in 2006. Even now it ispossible to travel in this heaven of wild na-ture and birds by bicycles.

The trips in the national and regionalparks are especially attractive. There the cycleroutes (approximately 80 km) go through themost picturesque rivers, lakes, mounds, andethnographical villages. It is possible to cycleon footpaths and park paths. Trips in the na-tional parks of Aukðtaitija, Dzûkija, regional

hotels are at your disposal. For those, whodecided to sleep in their own tents, it is ad-visable to find out about the location ofcamps. Every park has at least one camp thatis situated in really beautiful places.

Travellers atLithuanian rivers and lakes may feel them-selves as characters of the adventure movie,as the lakes and rivers will reveal them themosaic of unexpected views: tenebrous for-ests and pine forests, ancient villages, widemeadows, moulds located faraway, quiet bays, rivers rolling between the stones, castles ormansions on the high cost scarps…. Or maybethe river will form a “serpentine”, where youwould feel like in a closed maze?

Lithuania has 20 rivers that are suitablefor water tourism. Although those rivers aredifferent and flow through different surroun-dings, you do not need to be experienced, asall of them are calm. Those, who like travel-ling in the lakes, it is advisable to go toAukðtaitija region having more than 300lakes. Majority of them are interrelated, sovarious routes are possible. There are severalvery beautiful lakes in the regions ofÞemaitija and Dzûkija. Don’t forget that themost exciting trips are waiting for you in na-tional and regional parks. More informationabout the routes and their characteristic youcould get from the renters of boats, sculls, canoes, and floats; they will also provide youwith the description of the route.

Do you like fishing? Lithuania is rich inreally picturesque and unique places for fi-shing. First of all, we should mention the re-gion of Aukðtaitija, Kurðiø Marios and someother rivers. The providers of fishing servicesmay offer fishing trips to Kurðiø Marios or tothe Baltic Sea. At the end of the trip you willgather in the beautiful place near the fire, willcook and taste the fish soup and share yourfishing adventures. You will probably not for-get this trip for a long period of time. Ofcourse, it is easier to catch fish in the fishinglakes. There are several places in Lithuania, where the chef of the restaurant will preparea dish from fish (trout or carp) that you havejust caught. It is a shame to visit the Balticcoast and not to taste the smoked halibut, pikeperch or eel.

Have a great time when sailing theyacht, boat or entertainment ship in KurðiøNerija, the lakes of Trakai, Plateliai, andKauno Marios etc, because the view is dif-ferent looking from waterside. You may sailthe yacht to Klaipëda (the yacht club of thePilies port is situated in the very centre ofthe town). The depth of the pass of KurðiøMarios, which leads to the beautiful Nidaand the influx of the Nemunas, is only 2.5metres. The ancient boats sail near Nida andin the lakes of Trakai. The divers will have apossibility to see the remains of the ancientpolar town or the park of sculptures on thebottom of the lakes of Trakai, Plateliai orLûkstas. Those, who like the in-door water

If you like riding then you perfectlyknow the pleasure of riding a well-trainedblood-horse in the picturesque vicinity. There are more that 30 stud houses andhorse riding centres in Lithuania. A num-ber of rural tourism homesteads also haveseveral horses for riding. Stud houses usu-ally grow horses of the following breeds:Arabic, Trakënø, Hanover, American, Rus-sian, Orlov and their hybrids; the sama-gotian and the punch of Lithuania (the lo-cal breeds). Horses grown in Lithuania par-ticipate in races organized in different Eu-ropean countries. Practically all stud housesrent horses for riding, some of them giveriding lessons. Almost every stud house of-fers trips by coach or carriage, or by sledgein wintertime. The race of carriages pulledby horses in Rieðës hippodrome is also avery exciting event.

Riding the horse is one of the mostattractive forms of travelling in nationalparks. The routes go through the nationalparks of Trakai, Anykðèiai, Aukðtadvaris,Kurtuvënai, Kauno Marios (the Lithuaniannational museum), Meteliai, the Nemunasloops, the seaside, Pavilnys, Varniai,Veisiejai, Venta and the regional park ofÞagarë. The stud house composed of a setof buildings of the English style in Þagarëis particularly beautiful. Horses in this studhouse were bred from the beginning ofXIX century and are still bred now. Thelong history of the man and the horse is

Not only in the saddle

presented in the exhibition in the Museumof the Horse (the regional park ofAnykðèiai, Niûroniai). The horse race that

is organized every first weekend of Febru-ary in Dusetos already became the na-tional event.

Lithuania is a country suitable of the eco-logical trips. There are a lot of places of na-ture that are little affected by people. Ourcountry is rich in animals and birds that arerare or are on a verge of extinction in otherWest European countries. In order to protect, these territories are given the status of con-servation area or nature reserve. Visits to theseterritories are restricted. There are 271 pro-tected territories of 52 types having the Euro-pean importance. These are natural lakes, swamps and sloughs, broad-leaved and mixedforests: 39 of them are territories importantto the protection of birds. Lithuania has 254conservation areas: 6 – ornithological, 32-botanic, 14 botanic- zoological nature reserves,34 – hydrographical, 48 – of landscape etc.

There are more than 330 species of birds.13 species are in the list of birds that are on averge of extinction. Lithuania has the largestpopulation of white storks in Europe (ap-proximately 13 – 15 thousand of nests). Thestork is the national bird of Lithuania. More-over, large groups of birds travel in autumnand winter following the largest migrationroute of birds that goes along the coastlineand crosses the national park of Kurðiø Nerija.Survey of birds is one the most beautiful typeof ecological tourism in our country. You mayparticipate in short or long trips of surveyingthe birds, take part in traditional internationalrally of surveying the birds (the last week ofOctober). Special towers and platforms forsurveying the birds are set in the places for

surveying the birds, where the ornithologicalroutes are situated.

All national and regional parks have se-veral footpaths and at least one cycling road;

some of them even have ecological routes.Information stands near the roads will pro-vide you all data about the specific charac-teristics of the location.

One of the oldest forms of man’s com-munication with the nature is the hunting. There are lots of legends and myths aboutthe deep-rooted traditions of hunting inLithuania. Even today, the birds and animalsare hunted following the obligatory huntingtraditions and rituals.

The populations of some birds and ani-mals are larger in Lithuania than in otherWest or Eastern European countries. Everyyear the Ministry of Environment sets limitsfor the animal hunting. In 2005 – 2005, theMinistry allowed to hunt 1260 red deer (245male-deer), 36 fallow-deer, 19 000 roes (4035male-roes). As regards moose, in particularmale-moose, they are not hunted every year. The hunts for wild boars are especially suc-cessful and exotic. There are so many wildboars in Lithuania that for the first time in2005 hunters for wild boars required no spe-cial permits. Differently from a number ofother EU countries, the hunt for wolves isallowed in Lithuania. The hunts for small ani-mals such as mongoose, fox, grey hear, mar-ten, ferret, and beaver take place in everyforest enterprise. The arriving hunters are ex-cited about the huge population of birds. Thehunt for birds is not regulated in our coun-try, except the hunts in spring that are for-bidden during that period of time. The for-eign hunters are subject to the same huntingconditions as the local hunters.

You will get and in-depth informationfrom special hunting (sometimes and fish-

We do not have a possibility to alwaysenjoy the white snow covering the earth, asLithuanian winters differ every year. How-ever, when the snow covers the earth and theweather becomes cooler, those who like ac-tive sport go skiing. Ignalina (Aukðtaitija na-tional park) is the winter capital of Lithuania. The layer of snow in beautiful territories ofthis national park is the thickest and remainsthe longest in Lithuania.

There are several mountain and specialplain routes for skiing. As it is usual in ma-jority of national and regional parks, otherroutes for skiing follow the summer footpathsand cycling roads. When skiing in winter, sur-roundings, landscape and ethnographic vil-lages surrounded by white forest seem likean image from a fairy-tale. And what’s thetaste of the herb tea with honey there! Oneshould go on the night trips with skis whenthe full moon shines. These trips are in par-ticular picturesque and full of glamour.

Those, who do not like skiing, may slidewith sledge or special “pot” from the hill. The trips in carriages pulled by horses arein particular romantic, when only the tink-ling bells disturb the stillness of winter. Butthat is not all. Those, who got cold in theoutside, may relax in the sauna. Majority ofhomesteads in villages and some camps havesaunas. There is a wide range of saunas atyour disposal - from the traditionalLithuanian (where you will be lambastedwith a fragrant whisk) to the set of Roman

baths. Those, who want to pump adrenalin, should look for snow motorcycles, ice-sledge, and aerodynamic sledge. One moreentertainment that will heat your blood is

sliding with a sledge that is pulled by the landrover on the frozen lake or on KurðiøMarios. We may also suggest the differententertainment – the winter fishing on ice.

Lithuanians state that they are the na-tion of farmers and pilots. That is becauseLithuanian Kazimieras issued a book entitled“The Great art of artillery” in the middle ofXVII, where he described the principles ofcreating a multi-stage rocket. Jurgis Dobke-vièius and Antanas Gustaitis constructedplanes in 1930 – 1940, whereas the flight ofStepas Darius and Stasys Girënas from NewYork to Europe was regarded as one of themajor achievement in the aviation of that day. Moreover, the senior pilot of the first char-ter flight by famous plane “Yankee Clipper”from the US to Europe in 1939 wasLithuanian – Adomas Kalkauskas.

The Lithuanian stunt pilots are famousfor a long time. Jurgis Kairys (www.jkairys.com),who was the first person to carry out the stuntfigures according to the music, belongs to theelite of pilots of the world. According to thenumber of air balloons for 100 000 persons,Lithuania is in 7 – 8 place in the world. Thereare more than 60 hot air balloons in the coun-try. Moreover, Vilnius is the only Europeancapital, where those balloons may take off.The 13th championship of hot air balloons wasorganized in Vilnius and its region in 2003.

Lithuania may offer other types of en-tertainment in the sky: gliding, parachuting,hang-gliding, paragliding, motorgliding, andparamotors. Try one of those and you will ex-perience a wonderful feeling of the free-and-easy flight. Of course, majority of air clubsmay offer survey flights that are the simplest.

Like a bird in the sky

But the most exotic trips are those with anair balloon above Vilnius or Trakai. There areseveral piloting schools in the country for

those, who having experienced the joy of anunusual flight, want to learn piloting them-selves.

What to risk? To pump adrenalin and for-get about fatigue and problems? In that case, choose Lithuania: budgie jumping from theTV tower, driving carting or rally cars in spe-cial routes; race with land-rovers in gravelquarries or trips full of adventures in nationaland regional parks; paintball in former Rus-sian training ground or the trips in swamps(even at night – and that’s the horror!); orien-tation sport games with funny tasks; acrobaticflights accompanied by an experience pilot ora lightening speed flights by reactive fighter.Having swing in the “Swing of giants” you willrealize that you may walk on peaks of trees.Or maybe you want to check your stamina? Inthat case, we suggest you to buy one-weekend(from 2 to 3 days) entertainment package en-titled “Earth-Sky-Water”, which will heat yourblood. Less risky, but no less romantic are thetrips on roller-skates in the city at night andthe trips on skis in national and regional parks.Or, let’s say, a special pubing and clubbing -isn’t that extreme enough?

We may also offer trips and excursionsduring which you will watch various perfor-mances – rituals, fights, imitations of histori-cal events and sometimes you may also par-ticipate in these events (for example, you willbe persecuted by ghosts or attacked by therobbers) etc. These trips are organized by thetravel agencies and tourism operators. Infor-mation about the extreme air, water and win-ter entertainments are provided in relevantchapters.

Want to forget civilization, noise of thecity and to find the shelter in the nature? Inthis case choose one of the 500 rural tour-ism homesteads in Lithuania. The home-steads differ in locations, architecture andthe extent of activity. A number of home-steads are composed of the whole set of newbuilding of the rural style, where manypeople may rest and enjoy the rural enter-tainments at the same time. The owners ofother homesteads (particularly in ethno-graphic villages) will give all their attentionto and will offer stay only for your family ora small company. In such villages you willfind a unique environment and a pleasantcommunication with locals.

A real escape from the rest of the worldis the rest in a grange surrounded by the for-est. You will forget all your problems and willfeel like in the fairy-tale when during thebreakfast you will see the deer or stag nib-bling the grass in the outskirts or the grange.

Rural tourism homesteads usually offerdifferent equipment for entertainment: bikes, boats, canoes, ships and yachts. Some of themmay even offer horses and carriages for riding, and sledges in wintertime. Almost all of themhave basketball grounds, and sometimes ten-nis courts. One or several different saunas arean obligatory attribute of every homestead. And maybe you would like to work with thehosts in the garden or garden-plot? There areseveral ecological rural tourism homesteads, and their number still increases.
