  • Major character.Hardworking farmer, 70 years old. Believes in tradition. Head of the family who decides to start farming after the rainfall a decision-maker. Maintains self-control. The desperation of the situation drives him to an irresponsible act he convinces the others to sacrifice his two granddaughters.

    MOKGOBJA

  • Mokgobjas filial son. Initially he is in despair but maintains self-control as he believes that man has to be strong. The absence of the rainfall and the wailing of the 2 women affect his self-control. He becomes irrational and agrees to his fathers suggestion to sacrifice his 2 children.

    RAMADI

  • Ramadis wife, Tiro Tiros sister, Nesta They are hardworking women and good home-makers. Strict.They become emotionally weak.Tiro and Nesta break down completely and start a strange, frenzied wailing.

    TIRO AND NESTA

  • Innocent and cheerful. They imitate the adult world when they play with each other. They sacrificed when an ancient rain-making ceremony to appease the rain god.

    NEO AND BOSEYONG

  • Is the plan or pattern of events in a story . The turning point of astory is when an events happens that lets the reader know something is about to change . The climax of the story comes at the end , when the detail come together and form a resolution.PLOT

  • Before 1958.,the people enjoy the fertile land and water is available at various places for them to quench their thirst.After 1958, a seven-year drought hits the land.The land transforms into thorny bushes, withering trees and the grounds are barren.The seven-year drought changes everything, rain becomes a rarity.

    The Introduction or Opening Stage (Exposition):

  • The people experience the real torture of drought.Mokgobja, Ramadi, Tiro and Nesta are affected by the prolonged dry spell.They feel despair and become desperate with the fear of starvation and the rain not falling.The women become emotional because there is no rain fall down.

    The Rising Action Stage

  • They perform the old ritual to make the rain fall .Two children are sacrificed,Neo and Boseyong.Their bodies are spread across the land.However,the rain still did not fall.

    The Climax

  • There is still no rain.The villagers suspect something is wrong as the two girls are missing. The family tells them that the two girls have diedThe police question the family members. The mother of the two children is not able to hold on any more and tells the truth. They have sacrificed the two little girls to the rain god.

    The Falling Action Stage

  • Ramadi and Mokgobja are both charged and sentenced to death for committing ritual murder. They have to face the consequences of theiractions.

    Personification-the rain clouds fled away and left the sky bare-the sun danced dizzily in the sky, with a strange crueltySimile-as dismal as the dry open thorn-bushSymbolism-the children represent new lifeIrony-the act (sacrifice) that the 2 men perform to ensure their survival which eventually becomes the cause of their own deaths.-the desperation to have rain to grow crops that leads to the killing of the two growing children the future generation is sacrificed for the growing of the crops.

  • In this short story, Theme - The forces of nature The seven-years of drought as there is no rain cause the villagers suffer endlessly and sacrifice two inoccent girls,Neo and Boseyong to make the rain fall.However,the rain still did not fall.THEMEIs the main subject or idea of a book .
